My Currently Reading List · 9:35pm May 28th, 2023

I've had a few people ask for recommendations on comics, etc so here is my lsit of manga, webtoons, and a select few webcomics I am currently keeping up with/reading as well as a short explanation on each.

Kuro No Shoukanshi

"Waking up in a strange new place with no memory of his past life, Kelvin learns that he's bartered away those very memories in exchange for powerful new abilities during his recent transmigration. Heading out into a whole new world as a Summoner — with his first Follower being the very goddess who brought him over— Kelvin begins his new life as an adventurer, and it isn't long before he discovers his hidden disposition as a battle junkie." -Description.

A pretty good isekai that focuses on fight scenes above all. Not half bad writing, with fun characters.

7/10

Dead Mount Death Play

"A Necromancer called The Corpse God is fighting against the Church, that is trying to subjugate him. Using his last ounce of power against the Calamity Crusher, he gets defeated, but his reincarnation magic activates.

Suddenly, he got transported in a world of modern society and in a body of kid Polka Shinoyama. What is gonna happen to him in this world? What will he do?"

Writing is pretty good, but the world building is really what knocks it out of the park. Weird powers though, and the eponymous necromancer never actually raises any dead which is a little underwhelming. That being said, highly recomend.

8/10

One Punch Man

Its one punch man, you know one punch man. Better then post season 1 anime and its not even close.

8/10

The Magical Revolution Of The Reincarnated Princess And The Genius Young Lady

"Anne-Sophia, the Princess who remembered her previous life at a young age, as well as her old self’s intense love of magic, set off to live out her fantasies in this fantasy world.

One day, during a magical mishap, she stumbled upon a scene where her brother Algard was breaking off his engagement to his fiancee, Euphilia.

What nobody could have foreseen is that this strange meeting would end up changing the course of history. "

Great world building, with a very good mc, its also got lesbians, and my favorite thing of all, an interesting, well structred magical system all wrapped up in a world that feel alive.

8/10

Kumo Desu Ga, Nani Ka?

In another world, the Hero and the Demon King continued to oppose each other. As their great magic collided, the explosion crossed over worlds and destroyed a classroom full of high school students. The victims who died in that explosion will be reincarnated in that alternate world. Our heroine, who has the lowest standing in the class, was reincarnated into a spider. She nevertheless faces this challenge head-on with great determination, and adapts to it surprisingly quickly. This is the story of how our protagonist, who was reborn as a weak spider monster, does whatever needed to survive.

Fun Territory Defense By The Optimistic Lord

https://manganato.com/manga-pd992686

"Fun Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei A man was reincarnated as Van, a boy of noble birth, who grew up to become a child prodigy through hard work. But when it was discovered that he possessed "production magic," he was immediately relegated to a remote village. However, his magic, which was called useless, turned out to be truly extraordinary, capable of producing anything as long as he had the right ingredients! With the knowledge from his previous life and the overpowered magic, the small, poor village will grow to become into a great city. "

Decent world building, decent characters, and decent writing, this may be mid, but its still worth your time.

6/10

Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita

"When he realized it, the protagonist was in another world and had become a sword that was stabbed on an altar in a great plain, crowded with devil beast. The world he was in had a game like system; HP, MP, Strength, Vitality, Agility, Intelligence, Dexterity, Titles and Equipment. Following his instinct as a living sword, he traveled to find the one who could be his wielder, until he met with a cat girl that was about to be attacked by a bear type devil beast. "

Sometimes average, sometimes a bit paint by numbers, but always fun, with characters and fights that I love seeing, this one is great. Also, part of the inspiration for 0 AP.

8/10

Youjo Senki

"A young girl fights on the frontlines in war. She has blonde hair, blue eyes, and nearly transparent white skin, and she flies through the air and mercilessly strikes down her opponents. Her name is Tanya Degurechov, and she speaks with a young girl's lisp and commands the army. Tanya used to be one of Japan's elite office workers, but because of a wrathful god, was reborn as a little girl. Tanya prioritizes optimization and career advancement above all, and she will become the most dangerous entity among the Imperial Army's sorcerers. "

The anime is great, as is the movie, but the manga goes further then whats on screen, which in turn doesnt go as far as the light novels. No matter how you enjoy this one, its a gooder. The main character is one of the most interesting/unique characters I've seen in a long time. Has some pretty fucking problematic themes, and such but nothing that feels pointlessly edgy.

9/10

Spy X Family

"The master spy codenamed has spent his days on undercover missions, all for the dream of a better world. But one day, he receives a particularly difficult new order from command. For his mission, he must form a temporary family and start a new life?! A Spy/Action/Comedy about a one-of-a-kind family! "

The only manga/anime I'd ever recomend to my own mother, this one has a great premise that gets expanded on expertly, creating interesitng and fun characters and blending it all with great writing, world building and genuinely surprising moments.

9/10

Ruri Dragon

"The story of a young dragon girl being lazy, doing her best...and being lazy again. Ruri faces the usual issues: pushy classmates, annoying teachers, and...waking up with dragon horns?!"

Short, sweet, and aparently soon to be updated, this has some very promising world building, and adorable characters.

7/10

Mieruko-Chan

"All of a sudden, a girl is able to see grotesque monsters all around her; but no one else can. Rather than trying to run away or face them, she instead musters all of her courage and... ignores them. Join in on her day-to-day life as she keeps up her best poker face despite the supernatural goings-on."

With some of the best visual story telling I've seen in a long time, its no surprise why this one is getting an anime adaptation. The characters are also great, the world building on point, and the writing is paced perfectly. Highly recomend this one.

9/10

Yondome Wa Iya Na Shizokusei Majutsushi

"Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers - one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save - be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation, one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to endure a third life filled with suffering, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit suicide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-vampire, half-dark elf. A dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives - Death Magic and his enormous Mana pool. "

At points its a bit boring, and almost masturbatory with its edginess, but despite that its fun, and one of my guilty likes.

6/10

Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken

"A man is stabbed by a robber on the run after pushing his coworker and his coworker's new fiance out of the way. As he lays dying, bleeding on the ground, he hears a voice. This voice is strange and interprets his dying regret of being a virgin by gives him the [Great Sage] unique skill! Is he being made fun of !?! "

One of the first, and most prominant isekais to come out in the past few years, the manga is better paced, and in my opinion superior to the anime. If you've read any manga, or seen any anime in the last half decade chances are you know all about this one, and the hype is mostly on point.

7/10

Isekai Yakkyoku

"A young pharmacologist and researcher in Japan died from overworking, and was reincarnated in a Medieval Parallel Europe. He was reincarnated as a 10-year-old apprentice to a famous Royal Court pharmacist, had attained an inhuman skills of ability to see through disease, material creation, and material destruction. In a society in which dubious medical practice are rampant, price gouging thru the monopoly of the pharmacist guild, and good medicine aren't available to the commoners. He was recognized by the Emperor at that time and opened a Pharmacy at the corner of the town. He will wipe out the fraud that has swept the world, and deliver to the commoners a truly effective medicine that was developed using present day pharmacology. Thus the boy pharmacist will cheat by using his previous knowledge to create innovative medicines while helping the people of the parallel world, a story about living his new life to the fullest this time. The popular web novel now comes in manga form! "

Like territory defense, but with a better writer, more knowledgable writer who has a knack for writing beleivable characters, this is a gooder. World building is also really good, with some unique twists to keep even seasoned readers on their toes.

8/10

Evolution Begins With a Big Tree

"Reborn as a willow tree!? Resurrection of spiritual energy, rise of all things. The reborn willow has also embarked on the path of evolution. It can evolve infinitely, is it “divine power” or “curse”?"

I'm going to be frank, this is pure self induldgance, the characters are flat, one dimensional, and the writing is c tier at best, with world building every bit as generic, and predictable as any trash fic you've read. That being said, its still fun, and I like it.

5/10

Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha

"The protagonist was an eternal copper rank adventurer of frontier area, Lent. He’s unlucky as he meet a powerful monster inside of the labyrinth, got defeated, and when he noticed, he already became a bone man《Skeleton》. Agonizing since he can’t enter the town with his current condition, he’s recalling about the existence of monster evolution, with a goal to gain a body with muscle, he defeats the monsters of the labyrinth."

What starts off as a fun, unique tale this one gets bogged down after the first major arc, and quickly devolves into cliche trash. My suggestion is to quit once you hit the village arc.

6/10-4/10

Villainess Level 99 ~I May Be The Hidden Boss But I'm Not The Demon Lord~

"I reincarnated as the "Villainess Eumiella" from an RPG Otome game. In the main story, Eumiella is merely a side character, but after the ending, she re-enters the story as the Hidden Boss, a character boasting high stats on par with the heroes!
Lighting a fire in my gamer's soul, and taking advantage of being left on my own in my parent's territory, I trained, trained, and trained! As a result of my training… by the time I enrolled in the academy, I managed to reach level 99.
Though I had planned to live out my days as inconspicuously and peacefully as possible, soon after entering the school, I'm suspected by the Heroine and Love Interests of being the "Demon Lord"…?

Based on a popular web novel of seeking a peaceful life, a fantasy story of the strongest villainess!"

Adorable, funny, but with slow, inconsistant updates, and a story that moves at a glacial pace with mostly forgettable side characters, this one is hard to recomend. Still fun, but not for everyone.

6/10

Otome Game No Hametsu Flag Shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou Ni Tensei Shite Shimatta...

" I recovered my past memories when my head was hit by a rock.I am Katarina Claes, the eight year old daughter of a duke.Whilst embroiled in a feverish nightmare, in which the prince’s fiancee was determined, I have realized that this world is an otome game from my previous life. Also, I have turned into the villainess who interfered with the romance of the capture targets…If the heroine got a happy end, I would be exiled, but if she got a bad end, I would be killed by the capture target…I have no happy end?! Why is it all bad?!Somehow I have to avoid the destruction end, and reach old age peacefully!!! "

Some of the best character writing I've seen in manga, this one solid gold, though its story is weighed down by cliche at points. Thats all small potatoes though, so if you read that description and was the least bit interested, give it a look.

8/10

Kaiju No. 8

"A man, unhappy with the work he has had to do in life, is involved in an unexpected event …!
He becomes a Kaijuu, a monstrous creature, giving him a new chance to achieve what he always dreamed of!"

With great writing, characters, fights, world building, and MC, this one's a banger. Definetly rooting for this one to get big.

9/10

Arlokk The atrocious.

"It's not easy to be a bad guy! Follow the goofy adventures of an evil, foul-mouthed villain Arlokk and his misfit minions. (Updates every FRIDAY)"

Aggressively mediocre, this one barely gets so much as a slight exhale through my nose, but its got enough sunday funny vibes to it that I enjoy it.

5/10

Eldritch Darling

"What if we kissed and we were both girls? And one of us was an oblivious human and the other was a dark eldritch abomination creature from beyond the stars?? [updates fridays]"

What if lesbians but one was an eldritch abomination, this one is one dimensional but still fun, and quite adorable at times.

6/10

The Weekly Roll

"A bi-weekly four-panel comic strip that follows the exploits of a party of adventurers as they walk the fine line between being the good guys and homeless psychopaths for hire. "

I fucking love this comic, its got everything. Great characters, hilarious meta commentary, genuinely good world building, weighty combat, and an overarching story I cant wait to see progress.

9/10

Pixie and Brutus.

"This series focus's on the unlikely friendship between Pixie, a tiny, innocent, joyful kitten; and Brutus, a huge scar-faced retired military dog."

Adorable, funny, and heart warming this nails its tags perfectly. If those tags are things you enjoy, then give this a look.

8/10

Nerd And Jock

"Sometimes friendships go beyond stereotypes! Adventures of Nerd and Jock. - Updates 3-5 times a month."

Another one dimensional, what you see is what you get type of deal, it does a good job with that relatively simple premise. Quite funny at times, as well as heart warming, its no mona lisa, but Its hard to find something worth complaining about.

Erma

"Erma is like any other normal child. She goes to school, plays with friends, and even spends time with the family. It just so happens that she is the daughter of a ghostly spirit and tends to use her haunting abilities for everyday antics, whether for better or for worse."

I love originality more then anything, even a cohesive, story or even decent writing. Thankfully this story has all of those things and then some. They really flex these facts with their last arc, and I gotta say I am not disapointed with its ending.

9/10

The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All

"A popular Twitter shorts series depicting the love story between a gyaru and her classmate who she mistakes as a guy outside of school, bonding over their mutual love for rock music."

Another one dimensional story, this one is really punched up by its great art, solid chemistry, and fun side characters. Probably should have wrapped up by now, its starting to stretch its premise a bit too far, but we'll see if its earned.

7/10

Grrlpower

"Grrl Power is a comic about a crazy nerdette that becomes a superheroine. Humor, action, cheesecake, beefcake, 'splosions, and maybe some drama. Possibly ninjas. "

Love this comic, its got a great world building, fun characters, good mystery, and generally pretty great writing. A little wordy at points, the explanations it gives can be hamfisted and masturbatory, but still thats not enough to bring down the score.

9/10

Three Panel Soul.

A classic that everyone should check out at least once, this one's pretty darn good.

8/10

Goblins!

"The story follows both a group of goblins, including Chief, Big Ears, Fumbles, Thaco and Complains-of-Names. It also follows Minmax and Forgath, "adventurers" based on RPG player characters. Goblins mixes comedy with bleak situations and gruesome violence."

10/10

Score speaks for itself, and the less I say the better, just know this. If you play d and d, or know anything about ttrpgs, give this one a look. Your welcome.

Oglaf

"Set in a fantasy world complete with knights and wizards, elves and monsters, OGLAF satirizes the tropes of genre fiction and contemporary sexual mores at the same time, resulting in both hilarity AND smutty scenes between people (and sometimes creatures) of every size, shape, and color."

This bad boy has done adult comedy better then rick and morty, and a million other examples. Seriously, if you dont mind a little sex in your comedy, this is well worth your time.

10/10

Warhammer 40,000 Deathwatch

"Written by Black Library superstar Aaron Dembski-Bowden.nDeathwatch are the best of the best from all chapters of Space Marines. They alone have the strength of mind and body to battle the alien across the universe, defending humanity from the Xenos that would destroy them.nFaced with the destruction of an entire sector, assailed by hordes or orks... can a Deathwatch strike team hold the line against impossible odds?"

A pretty darn good story, not just for warhammer, but in general, this one punches above its weight class with some great fight scenes even if it can be infuriating at some points.

7/10

Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar

" In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war…The saga of WARHAMMER 40,000 comes to Marvel Comics! MARNEUS CALGAR, the legendary Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, leads his elite Space Marines against humanity''s greatest threats in a galaxy engulfed in endless war. Kieron Gillen (UNCANNY X MEN, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, The Wicked + The Divine) spearheads the initiative with this introductory miniseries, illustrated by Jacen Burrows (PUNISHER: SOVIET, MOON KNIGHT, Crossed)--and we''re just getting started! Now, witness Marneus Calgar''s never-before-told origin story, from his beginnings on Nova Thulium, to his campaigns in the Black Crusades, and to the unfolding mystery of the BLACK ALTAR, as a deadly threat from his past reemerges to threaten the present of the Ultramar system. This all-new tale is essential reading for 40K aficionados, as well as the perfect primer to the world of WARHAMMER 40,000 for those new to the universe. See the Ultramarines in glorious combat, the strife between the worlds of the Imperium, and witness the larger than life characters who preside over it all! This is but the first foray into the larger darkness that is to come from Warhammer and Marvel Comics. Be prepared. "

This one did the impossible, it made me kind of like the ultramarines. Great story, characters, writing, this one's the total package folks.

9/10

Extreme Venomverse

"RETURN TO THE VENOMVERSE! Face front, Venomaniacs—to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the creation of VENOM, the SUMMER OF SYMBIOTES IS UNDERWAY! And it all starts with EXTREME VENOMVERSE, a landmark series that’s going to take Mighty Marveldom to corners of the hive never seen before in three titanic tales! FIRST! Comics superstars Ryan North and Paulo Siqueira put a fresh and exciting spin on a story you may be familiar with…starring Eddie Brock as…SPIDER-MAN?! THEN! Your new favorite comics writer, Mirka Andolfo, shows you a side of the whole Brock family you NEVER thought you’d see! AND FINALLY! One of the best writer/artists in comics today, Leonardo Romero, reimagines Venom as a SAMURAI! But whether all of your new favorite symbiotes will survive this summertime saga remains to be seen…"

Anyone who knows me knows I am a sucker for my boy venom, and this is just more of that. With that being said, it still stands on its own so far, though only time will tell if it eclipses the previous venomverse comics.

She Hulk

"The best character ever is back in her own series and about to glam up the whole Marvel Universe! Jennifer Walters, A.K.A. the Sensational She-Hulk, is no longer savage and needs to put her life back together. She's got a career to rebuild, friends to reconnect with (and maybe represent in a court of law) and enemies to…well, she may not want to connect with them, but they are DEFINITELY going to connect with her. And t.he last page of this first issue is going to send Jen down a road she's never traveled and that will shake up her life and possibly the whole Marvel Universe."

Shulk is one of my comfort characters, and is one I've been following for a fuckin long ass time. This run is pretty mid though. It has its moments, but it never really does anything particularly well plus the conclusion of the last arc was nauseating. I detest it when a story lampshades its unwillingness to break with the classic "return to status qou ending" by being meta, or making some other disapointing excuse. Its worse sin is squandered potential.

6/10

Batman White Knight Presents Generation Joker.

"Spinning out of the runaway hit Batman: Beyond the White Knight comes an unforgettable coming-of-age super villain tale starring the children of Harley Quinn and The Joker! When the rebellious twins run away in a stolen Batmobile, only Joker Jack Napier’s quickly fading hologram has any hope of getting them home safely and keeping them out of the family business. But a life of crime isn’t the only temptation young Bryce and Jackie are facing: the kids uncover a dark secret that could bring their dad back to life for good! With a wild array of Batman’s former enemies and allies on their tails, will the kids succeed in reviving the Dark Knight’s greatest foe? Find out as Jackie and Bryce take center stage in the White Knight Universe!"

This one wont make a lick of sense unless you've read the full Batman: Beyond The White Knight, so keep that in mind. Personally I love this AU, partially because I'm such a sucker for Harley Quin, partially because the storytelling is bloody fantastic.

9/10

Magic The Gathering

"* A new beginning for the pop culture phenomenon of Magic starts here from Jed MacKay (Marvel's Black Cat) and Ig Guara (Marvel's Ghost-Spider), perfect for new readers and long time fans. * Across the vast Multiverse, those gifted with a "spark" can tap into the raw power of Magic and travel across realms -- they are Planeswalkers. * When coordinated assassination attempts on Guildmasters Ral Zarek, Vraska and Kaya rock the city of Ravnica and leave Jace Belleren's life hanging in the balance, a fuse is lit that threatens not just these three Guilds, but the entire plane of Ravnica. * Now these three must covertly infiltrate the wild plane of Zendikar and form a tenuous alliance to uncover why the targets of the assassins have all been Planeswalkers... * ...which will lead them straight to one of the most enigmatic characters in Magic history!"

The main mtg story is complete fucking dogshit, and I could write fucking novels on its wasted potential, squandered characters, and half assed writing but thankfully this doesnt quite fall as far. There are still more then a few choices that I've detested, but that being said its done enough that even all that doesnt stop me from recomending this bad boy. Provided you know anything about magic that is, bonus points if you have a vague idea of the recent story.

9/10

Harley Quinn 2016, 2021, and 2000

"“Die Laughing” part one! Welcome back to Harley Quinn’s crazy world on Coney Island…now get ready to wave goodbye, because everyone there just might get eaten alive! Harley’s gotta protect her neighborhood against an all-out zombie apocalypse! Break out the chainsaws, everybody!"

"Ahem! You better read this closely, ’cause we’ve got a red-hot relaunch on our hands here-and I should know! Harley Quinn here to let everyone know that I got a brand-new monthly series here with a brand-new status quo. I’m coming back to Gotham City to make up for the sins of my past, and help the city recover from “The Joker War”! But there’s no welcoming committee waiting for me, your favorite Maid of Mischief! And between you and me, some real creeps are working to keep the city broken. We can’t let that happen, can we? Rising-star writer Stephanie Phillips, my new partner in crime, takes me into a bold new era with her partner in artistic crime Riley Rossmo, who I gotta say designed a real nice new costume for me. You’re not gonna wanna miss this one, folks!"

"HARLEY QUINN is not the story of an honorable woman and her quest for justice. Instead, it''s a love story gone horribly, horribly, horribly wrong, especially in the first extra-length issue, as the Joker''s girlfriend must do without Mister J''s calming influence. And considering just how many sandwiches short of a picnic Harley is, you know this book''s going to be wild! Harley is driven to astounding lengths to free her loony lover. And that''s just in the first seven pages. What follows is too strange for words, though it does involve one itsy-bitsy cameo by Batman. Just one! Once you see life through the eyes of Harley Quinn, you''ll find she makes a lot more sense. Would you believe a little more sense? "

2000 is my 10/10 and personal favorite. Its fucking great, and honestly one of my personal favorite comic runs ever.

2016 is mostly good. It came as the character was first transitioning away from her Animated series roots and at points it was rocky. Still a good series, its a solid 8/10 at its best, but falls to 6/10 at points.

2021 comes after a more cohesive idea/identity for the character has been established now that she is truly out of the joker's shadow. Thats not to say it still doesnt have its less then great moments, but its alot better. Mostly a 7/10 it has its better and worse arcs.

Poison Ivy 2022

"Pamela Isley has been a lot of things in her life. A living god, a super-villain, an activist, a scientist, and dead. In a new body that she didn’t ask for and with a renewed sense of purpose, Ivy leaves Gotham and sets out to complete her greatest work—a gift to the world that will heal the damage dealt to it...by ending humanity. Spinning out of the pages of Batman, DC is proud to present the unbelievable next chapter in Poison Ivy’s life by the incredible creative team of G. Willow Wilson and Marcio Takara."

I freaking love this comic. Arguably the best take on Ivy in comics history, it has a visual style that is as stunning as it is colorful. A tight story, a great messege, and the best ship in comics history, its great.

10/10

Dishonorable mentions.

Goth Girl & The Jock

Lazy in the extreme, and as predictable as the fucking sun, it doesnt deserve a quarter of the praise it receives, and honestly its a little disapointing to see how much priase this absolutely bare bones, barely functioning pile of cliches they call a plot gets.

I used to be a boss/solo leveling

Some of the worst, most cliche riddled writing I've ever seen outside of a thirteen year old's first attempt at a fan fiction, this absolute bottom of the barrel fiction with some truly awful writing. Its inspiring the same way Twilight is inspiring (the book not the pony) as if they can be finacially successful then that means the crap I put out has a solid chance at blowing up.

you get my seal of approval

Don't mind me, but…Some time ago an anime showed up on my video app's front page, and after that lots of people talked about it. I'm not sure about its actual quality since I don't have VIP which is necessary for watching many things there, but I heard about it here and there and apparently people loved it to death and pushed the characters there to the sky.

Do you know about it? We call it"孤独摇滚", I'm a bit lazy to search for the details since I don't have time for shows These days.

Bocchi the Rock! Is pretty darn good, Only saw one episode so take that recommendation for what it is.
