A JD Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) · 2:04am May 8th, 2023

Oooo boy, it's been a while since I've done one of these reviews. Just like it's been a while since I've seen a Marvel movie. But the Guardians films have always been special to me, and this one is no different. Let's take a look at the potential final installment in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

NON-SPOILER REVIEW

I've been feeling a lot less enthusiasm for the MCU since Multiverse of Madness. What with the subpar films, lack of direction, lack of excitement, it's just felt like the spark that was there... just isn't there. No Way Home was fantastic, but other than that I haven't checked out many MCU flicks or shows.

However, I knew I needed to see Guardians 3. It was James Gunn's send-off for these characters, and what a wonderful finale he gave us. The film excels in raising the stakes for our characters in one of deepest, most personal ways possible: all tying in to Rocket's backstory. Everyone has a shining moment in this movie, and I felt it closed out a lot of characters' stories incredibly well.

The villain was great, just pure evil to the bone, and someone you just want to hate. Which is exactly what a good villain is for. Him being personally tied to Rocket added even more weight and depth to the character. The action was fantastic, the set pieces creative and fun, and the story was solid.

If there was anything I thought was lacking was, surprisingly, the comedy this time around. There were a few great jokes here and there, but mostly the film took itself very seriously, which is honestly a breath of fresh air for the MCU. Other attempts at comedy in the film fell a little flat for me, as well as the inclusion of Adam Warlock, which we'll get to in the spoilers...

As for the final score! Really enjoyed this film! I'd give it a 9/10! What were your thoughts? :pinkiehappy:

SPOILER REVIEW

Probably one of the most emotionally-gripping films in the MCU. I can't say the same for Black Panther Wakanda Forever or Ant-Man 3, considering I haven't seen them. Either way, there were a couple moments that got my eyes burning haha definitely for Rocket's backstory and when Lylla got capped. That scene killed me :raritycry:

Everyone got an emotional finale and satisfying end to their story, I felt. Nebula and Drax staying in Knowhere to build a colony of the lost people, children, and creature's of the galaxy, with Drax becoming the father he used to be to the children. Rocket becoming the leader of the Guardians and finding his true purpose and happiness. Mantis going out on her own to do things her way. Gamora returning to the Ravagers, and potentially returning to the Guardians one day. And Peter Quill... going back to Earth to find his only family left... his grandpa... and making amends for when he first left :fluttercry: It was wonderful.

One of my only gripes with the movie was the inclusion of Adam Warlock. I felt like he was included just for the sake of tying in to the last movie. He was teased back in 2017 and now he's here just to... have a few scenes? Sure, he saved Star-Lord, but other than that he didn't contribute much. I hope to see him play a much bigger role in future films, because he's apparently one of the strongest Marvel characters, and it'll be a waste to not use him for the upcoming Avenges films.

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this film! Guardians 1 will always be my favorite, and Guardians will always be funnier to me, but Guardians 3 is the emotional weight that brings it all together.

9/10! What were your thoughts?

I agree with most of your thoughts, having just seen the movie myself. Screw the High Evolutionary.

I am disappointed that Peter didn't end up Gamora after all the progress he made with the other Gamora. But oh well, hopefully Star Lord and some of the others that left the team show up in future MCU projects. Like Imagine a show something like Peace Maker dealing with Peter readjusting to life on Earth and trying to be a responsible adult.

5727000 Absolute scumbag of a villain

5727040 The legendary Star-Lord will return :ajsmug:

I honestly grow tired of the MCU dipping. Disney having a shaky track record these days doesn't help. However, the few things that are consistently high is Gunn and his direction, and the animated shows Disney released. I can't wait to see this movie again.

Also, the High Evolutionary is basically Palpatine, somebody so scummy you call him awesome.

Rocket backstory looks like something written by PETA and I love it

Be honest: Did you cry during this movie? I didn't, but I was really close, and I absolutely would not blame anybody if they did. I think I was the closest when Lylla, Teefs, and Floor all died. That absolutely broke me.

5729785 Was close, but no tears out of me :twilightsheepish:
