    Still working on Midnight Rising...

At the rate of about 800-1000 words a day. That’s my key to getting stuff done that’s causing you issues; just be sure you put at least a little time in on it this day to have some forward momentum. The two chapters are now up to 24,100 words. I’ll work on it more this weekend, at least around continuing work around the maps and battle graphics I’m making for Feathered Hearts.

Did two things this past weekend...

First, I ran 10k for the first time in two months after laying off that long to let my ankle bursitis subside, trying to allow the area to generally heal up. It appears that it worked. To my delight, there was no ankle pain after and I hadn’t even lost much stamina thanks to hitting an elliptical machine twice a week for an hour instead of jogging. My upper legs are another matter, though.

C&C chapter 40 entering prereads tonight + teaser

Much as I didn’t want to, I made the decision to break it up since the full length of the War Council meeting had exceeded 20,000 words and will probably approach 25k for the now-two chapters before all is said and done. The breakpoint itself will be between learning about the general war situation both Aricia and the Griffon Kingdom face, and then discussing what in all the Crows they’re going

Midnight Rising/C&C update: April showers may bring May flowers...

But of more interest is the emergence of 17-year cicadas in my area. Big, ugly, red-eyed insects that are the size of your thumb but basically harmless, as long as you can get past all the shed skins they leave behind on leaves and the everpresent and disconcertly loud background sound they produce as a mating call. Fortunately, the outbreak in my area seems pretty limited. There's a few around,

Midnight Rising update; Feathered Hearts C&C teaser...

Hey, folks. Here’s my weekly writing update. I’m tagging this as C&C since that’s what the teaser below is about, but the blog is about both it and Unleash the Magic - Midnight Rising.

Still pecking away at C&C... · 9:22pm Apr 10th, 2023

The new chapter is at 15.2k words and still not done, with it very likely to be broken up again. I see a natural breakpoint developing after all the memory replays are shown, and once again, it would seem best to let them—and the alternate perspective of events/major and minor revelations they show—have the spotlight instead of extending the chapter to include a major trailing M-rated scene. So it will end on the doorstep of it as our favorite Tribune finally manages to fatally offend our friendly Changeling Queen.

I do apologize for how slow this is coming—sometimes I only manage a few hundred words a day; sometimes I don’t work on it at all—but my muse is just not with this and my mental/emotional energy is low right now. I think my testosterone level might be falling again, as I’m due for fresh pellet implants in two weeks. It may also be that I just need a break from writing in general right now, but I also don’t want to leave this languishing after all the effort I’ve put into it. So it will get done and you’ll have at least one more chapter before I have to step away again.

As for what happens after, I’m still not sure. I just don’t seem eager to write in general right now, which suggests I really do need a break from it to recharge. As to what form recharging would take, I really don’t know. Still a couple months away from summer vacation and any possible poker trips to Las Vegas, and I’m starting to think about trying to pay off my home; maybe even taking a disbursement from my retirement accounts (which would incur tax penalties) to do so. But I need to do something different for a while, and not helping is that work is being a bear right now. I’m being told I have to get a series of tasks done by the weekend, which I think is going to be a bit ambitious.

So I ask that you folks bear with me for me now as I try to get through what seems to be a slightly rocky period. Don’t worry; I’m not going anywhere. Work will continue on the new chapter, if only in bits and pieces at a time. I’ll try to have at least a teaser for it ready by the weekend.
