Story Review #21: Embrace Your Demon —by EileenSaysHi

A reward for getting 3rd place in the Sunset x EG/MLP Villains “Bad Romance” contest!

Character’s:

Sunset Shimmer: You can really feel just how F’ed up this whole situation is and the hopelessness of her impending death followed by her possession. And despite its darker tone this story depicts Sunset in the most canon way it possibly can. Everything about it from her lines, emotions, to even her despair is very well executed.

Demon: What a bitch!! And I mean that in a good way the way she is depicted makes her downright awful but in the perfect I’m meant to hate her way not a she’s the worst she ruins the story way. A very good antagonist/Toxic romance and a very unique way of portraying such a relationship.

Premise: on the surface you can take this story as a surface level she was shot and taken over by the demon who once was with her in more ways than one.

But that is just one interpretation and I see at least 3 others that it could be seen as. (These are probably just me overthinking.)

1. this whole story could be a crazy Sunset with multiple personalities battling for control no demon just a manifestation of her inner selves.
2. Or maybe this story could be a depicting an inner turmoil and a less black and white story and instead be someone fighting within themselves for whether or not to go back to being a toxic but in charge person or staying who they have been. And they ultimately decide to go back to their old ways.
3. Or my favorite interpretation letting someone you know is toxic back into you’re life whether it be a conversation or a meetup and slowly they get back in the toxicity of the relationship seeping in and controlling you’re life again pushing you’re true self back beneath the surface.

But that’s what I enjoy about this premise anyone can interpret it differently or change viewpoints upon rereading it.

Grammar and punctuation: The story doesn’t have any major grammar or punctuation errors but it still isn’t the most polished framing of sentences or grammar.

Dialogue: Again this leans into the whole the story has multiple interpretations and the dialogue is a major part of that so great work to the author.

Flaws: Context despite me liking the multiple contexts this story does lack a certain amount of context like: the war, Sunset getting shot, the demon being real or in her head, & it can be slightly lacking in that department.

Highlights: Dialogue and the character interaction between Sunset & Demon is really where this story really shines brightest.

But as always those are just my 2 cents and I recommend you check out the story yourself and form your own opinion. Hope you enjoyed this review EileenSaysHi
