Weekly Blog #2 · 1:05am Jan 15th, 2023
Sort of late on the upload of this one, the flooding and the wind outside somehow managed to knock out my power for the better part of this week and I had to get by without electricity due to it. Because of this I mainly spent my time reading some Fics on my phone instead of writing.
speaking of writing, I've been stuck dealing with an anachronism in the current chapter. its nothing big, but it sort of stuck out to me like a sore thumb so I thought I'd mention it here while I had the chance. The problem is simple, does canterlot have pedestrian crossings as well as streetlights to go along with them? Obviously there's no automobiles in Equestria, but there is at least some form of modern infrastructure as well as there being a few examples of electricity being a thing that exists. This a bit of a grey area and because of that while going back to add environmental descriptions I sort of got stuck thinking about this, I might have to change a decent part of the chapter due to it. TLDR; does canterlot have pedestrian crossings?
an update on my fanfiction readings, currently Im making my way through The Bug In The Basement a long slice of life about a changeling being born in the human world. I have about 15 chapters left, and I'd recommend you give it a read. I've also been reading the ultimate hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, it's great so far. I bought the barnes and noble hardback version that looks fancy af.
I spent all of yesterday playing D&D, and I'm getting sort of tired of my current character to be honest. I've been trying to convince my group to try starfinder after the current campaign. fingers crossed.
anyways, I hope to get this chapter out by my birthday on the 17th or probably my birthday weekend the 20th.
I would imagine that they would have pedestrian crossings in response to the large and heavy them-drawn carts and coaches that roll down the streets proper and may not be able to stop on a dime. Maybe not streetlights, though. They would likely have gaslights, but I don't imagine that the timing mechanism that makes streetlights work would fit into their technological wheelhouse. It makes me think of Victorian London with the carriages rolling through uncontrolled intersections as gaslamps provide a helpful visual border of the road in the morning fog.
It's funny that you should mention D&D. I spent a good portion of my long hiatus reading the core rulebooks for 3.5 in the hope of making myself into a passable DM. DM's for 3.5 games have become incredibly rare, and, although I would prefer to just play, someone has got to do the hard work. I mean, it would be easy enough to play 5th Edition with one of the many DMs who host those games, but that is really my problem with it--it doesn't feel like any kind of challenge. 3.5 makes players plan their characters development and scheme up their tactics if they want to do well; it makes the game engaging. I know that Pathfinder 1 is pretty awesome, but I have never seen Starfinder before. Is it similar? I've also heard good things about Call of Cthulhu, but I guess that's another of those hard-to-DM games.
Happy birthday, and party on.
I just realized that the date on this was January 15th and not July 15th. Oh well, it still goes.
