Hey everyone, I had another thought regarding that potential "What If...?" anthology: "What If... Twilight Sparkle Flunked Out?"
Basic idea: Twilight doesn't pass the entrance exam for the School for Gifted Unicorns, and instead attends Canterlot High with the plebs. She eventually becomes a Royal Guard (alongside Shiny? Instead of him??), accrues a squad of five other close friends, and applies her keen analytical mind to protecting the Princess. She's also wicked strong, and, despite her lack of training, is a pretty powerful magician too.
(As far as the actual plot, still figuring that out. Maybe she uses the lower-case-p power of her friendships to rally her soldiers and drive off Tirek? It might be cool to see her and her squad, completely drained of their powers, sacrifice themselves to protect Princess Mumblemumble--but to their own astonishment, come out the other side victorious and alive?)
(Why does she become a guard? Not sure at this point, but I like the idea of a tall(?), beefy(??) Twilight, being her own intellectual self, in an entirely different line of work. Maybe she joined the Guard to pay for college, but liked the work so much she stayed?)
Here's the thing: I feel like Royal Guard Twilight has to have been done before, and I don't want to retread concepts that have already been done to death. Like, I know there was a Raritwi shipfic where she was the bodyguard of Princess Rarity, but I'm afraid there might be more out there.
Anyone know of any other stories like this, where Twilight ends up as a Royal Guard?

I was thinking Royal Guard specifically, but just generic "soldier" could be interesting too.
I like them, but I like King of Beggars' stuff in general. They get NSFW in one of the later installments.
My own Good Trooper Gilda and sequel has a soldier- Twilight, who renamed herself due to AU cutie mark reasons. Her later career could be seen as 'royal guard' if you squint, but she starts out with the colonials.

I can also vouch for liking Twlight Sparkle of the Royal Guard and its immediate sequel (I can take or leave the third in the series). They do contain a level of violence, so bear that in mind.

Although it's been done a couple of times before, I still think there is great potential to take this concept in new directions that other Twilight AU Royal Guard fics haven't explored! And personally, I wouldn't mind if there was another badass Twilight story out there. Go for it !
