Twilight receives a kindle in the mail. How does she work the thing though?

Twilight loves to read. Whenever she isn't studying or adventuring with her friends, she finds a good book to pass the time. Everything would be perfect if one day she could take her books with her wherever she went. That has arrived. Twilight is blessed with a kindle, the best gift a reader can get. There's just one problem....how does she work the thing?!

See how Twilight Sparkle and Spike figure out what the kindle holds and hopefully find a way to work it. (As a side note, I have nothing against the kindle. I just thought that it be a funny story to see how Twilight would react getting one.)

Chapter 1: Special Delivery

I do not own or claim copyright to Amazon and it's Kindle. The Kindle is copyrighted by Amazon. I am not endorsing or advertising Amazon or The Kindle in any way. It is comletely fictious of what happens in this story (obviously). Sorry about that readers but just had to do that in case Amazon's ninja police come after me. Other than that enjoy

"Easy now Twilight, just a little more." Twilight said to herself as she worked on her telescope.

A beautiful mid-morning in Ponyville and Twilight finds herself fixing her telescope. A couple of days ago, she wanted to observe a star cluster, however the telescope wasn't strong enough. To rectify the issue, Twilight researched how to improve her telescope. Unfortunately, she damaged one of the lenses within the telescope and had to get it replaced. Finally, after hours of work, she was adding the last modification to her telescope.

Even though Twilight was nearly done, this required her full attention. The margin for error was small and one mistake could set her work back. The recovery from a mistake would be a heavy burden on the unicorn's mind. She dreaded the thought of her having to restart her work, but shook off the thought knowing the slightest bit of doubt would...

"*Crash* Special Delivery!"

Twilight jumped from the break of silence. A few seconds later, Twilight cringed at the sound of something breaking. She slowly opened her eyes to see the worst possible thing. The telescope had a burnt hole sizzling with magic in it. She stood there speechless seeing that she broke her telescope...again. After realizing what she did, Twilight quickly stormed out of her room to investigate the source of her dismay.

"Spike, I thought I told you I didn't need anything disturbing me while I work." Twilight confronted her assistant.

"I'm sorry Twilight. I made sure nothing would but then she just came crashing in." Spike apologized.

"She...she who?"

Spike then led Twilight downstairs to where she could see the cause of it all. The wall next to the front door had a mare's head through it. The gray, blonde haired, cross-eyed mare struggled to get her head free but found her attempts futile. Twilight walked over to the mare and used her magic to teleport her free from the wall and in to the library. Now that she was free, they could see it was a pegasus with bubbles as a cutie mark.

"Phew, thanks. I thought I might've been stuck there for good." The cross-eyed mare replied.

"Derpy, what are you doing here right now?" Twilight asked.

"I'm here to deliver a package to...um..." Derpy began. She rummaged through her saddlebag for the package she was going to deliver in order to read off the receiver’s name. "Ah here it is, ‘To Twilight Sparkle'."

"That's me but what I meant was why were you stuck in my wall?"

"Oh well I was on my way to give this to you but then something caught my eye on the way here. I don't remember what it was but then I got lost in my thoughts and crashed into your wall. Once I saw I was at the library, I shouted 'Special Delivery' hoping somepony would come." Derpy explained.

Twilight shook her head at typical Derpy. It struck her how such a pegasus got to be the mail pony. Then again, there were still things in Ponyville that she didn't understand. Funny those were things, along with her friends, that make her life in Ponyville perfect.

Twilight ceased her daydreaming and took the small package from Derpy. After examining it, she found a return address that she wasn't familiar with as well as the sender's identification. Twilight was worried of why she would get mail from somepony that she didn't know, let alone where they came from.

"Derpy I don't think I can..." Twilight started but stopped to see she was talking to no one." Spike where did Derpy go?"

"She left saying she had a lot more deliveries to run."

Twilight groaned at her misfortune. She put the package down and went to fix the wall with her magic. After fixing the wall, she got a scroll and started writing down the parts she needed to fix her telescope. A few minutes later she was throwing on her saddlebags, getting ready to leave

"Spike watch the library while I'm gone. I have to go to Canterlot for the parts I need and I’ll be back pretty late tonight." Twilight addressed to him.

"Wait can't you use your magic to fix your telescope like you did with the wall?" Spike asked.

"I wish I could but some of the parts require precision when fixing it. Plus I accidently broke some parts that I can't recover with magic." Twilight explained as she made her way to the door. “Take care Spike and don't open the package."

Spike waved goodbye to Twilight and watched her go. Once she was far enough, he went over to the package to see it for himself. He was surprised to see how small and light it was. His curiosity began to get to him and he motioned to open it. He retracted his claw knowing the consequences of betraying Twilight. His mind flashed back to when he accidently burned one of her books and didn't tell her. She forgave him then but now he feared that she wouldn't if he invaded her privacy. So Spike left the package and pre-occupied himself. Throughout the day as he kept himself busy, the package was in the back of his mind, eating away at his subconscious.

It would seem that other ponies were eager to observe the star cluster as well. The lines were long and the parts were scarce. Luckily, Twilight was able to get them in time before the store was sold out. She returned that night exhausted from her trip to Canterlot. As she walked in the door, Spike was eyeing the package.

"Spike, have you been watching that thing all day?" Twilight asked.

"Oh Twilight *yawn* you're back." The sleepy dragon replied.

"I am, so what have you been up to all day besides staring at the package?" Twilight asked as she set her saddlebags down.

"Oh you know chores, organizing the library and what not."

"Well it's late; we should be going to bed soon." Twilight yawned.

"What about the package?"

"I'll worry about it tomorrow, besides I'm pretty tired so let's go to sleep."

Spike sighed at not knowing what was in the package but was also too tired to argue. After they both had a quick snack, they got ready to go to sleep. As Twilight passed by the package, she wondered what was in it as well. It didn't matter right now. All she wanted was some sleep and get her telescope fixed. Little did she know that her subconscious would be giving her trouble throughout the night. Within her dreams, the same question kept popping up, 'What was inside the package?'

Chapter 2: Twilight vs The Kindle

Twilight didn't sleep well that night. Her mind kept wondering what was inside the package. After dragging herself out of bed and getting breakfast ready, Spike walked in with the same sleep deprived look. It seemed that both of them couldn't get the idea of the package out of their minds.

Twilight decided it was best to open the package and see what was inside. She opened it to see a small, flat, beveled shape device. It was approx. 7.5 in long, 5 inches wide, but to her surprise it wasn't even an inch thick. Twilight had never seen anything like this. She examined it more to find some lettering on the back that said 'Kindle'.

"Huh, Kindle... that must be what this is called." Twilight thought out loud.

"Hey Twilight there's a letter in the box." Spike pointed out.

Twilight saw the letter and examined it. The same return address and sender's name was on it. She was curious of who the sender was and hoped the letter would have some answers. She opened the letter and read it out loud.

"Dear Twilight, since you love to read I've decided to send you a special gift. What you have is called a Kindle. It is an amazing device that allows you to take your favorite books with you wherever you go. Do enjoy this great gift any reader would enjoy."

She wondered how such a thing existed and began to get excited of her current blessing. Twilight found the instruction manual and quickly read over them. She then proceeded to turn on the device. The screen lit up and asked her to register a username and password.

"That's easy, Twilight's Kindle." Twilight said.

"Is that the best you can come up with for a username?" Spike replied.

"Do you have anything better?"

"Hmmm....I don't know. Twilight Sparkle, can't really work with that."

Twilight glared at Spike for the moment and went back to her kindle. She tapped the area on the screen where to name the device. A set of letters appeared for her to put in the name. Twilight paused at the predicament she was in.

"This isn't right..." Twilight murmured.

"What is it?" Spike asked.

"How is anypony supposed to use this thing with hooves?" Spike shot her a look of confusion. "Our hooves are too big for these keys so unless you have magic or small appendages to operate it."

"Uh sure...what are appendages though?" Spike agreed.

Twilight concentrated on the keys with her magic and used it to push enough pressure on the keys to input her username and password in her kindle. Afterwards a little welcome screen popped up and a menu with a couple sample books. The books were different theories of magic. She tried to tap on one of the books but forgot her hoof was too big for the screen. She used her magic to select one of the books and quickly read through the first page. That's when her next problem occurred.

"Oh great...how am I supposed to turn the pages?"

"How about your magic?" Spike suggested

"I'm trying...but I can't" Twilight strained

"What do you mean you can't?"

Twilight put the kindle down and went over to grab one of her books. She then held the book and the kindle in front of Spike to demonstrate.

"You see Spike, books have pages. With magic, I'm able to grab the page and turn it. Now this doesn't have pages. It is just a flat screen that has words on it." Twilight explained.

"I thought it was a kindle?"

Twilight groaned at Spike's naivety. She thought how she normally would turn the page of a book. Looking at the kindle, she couldn't believe what she was about to attempt. Squinting her eyes from the light, she pressed her nose on the screen and swiped it across. Twilight opened her eyes fully to see that the page had turned. Spike giggled at Twilight's action. After seeing Twilight continue to turn the pages, he couldn't hold back his laughter anymore.

"This isn't funny Spike. This is the only way I can turn the pages." Twilight responded. 'Despite how humiliating it is.'

"How...how about you try...one of them buttons on the side?" Spike said through his laughter.

Twilight looked to the side of the kindle to see two buttons with different arrows. Curious, she pressed the arrow that looked like a forward arrow. Upon pressing the button, the page turned to her surprise. Spike laughed even more of Twilight's embarrassment. She was agitated and losing it now.

"Okay that's enough of these books. How about we add my collection to it now?" Twilight suggested.

"Sure but how do we do that?" Spike asked.

Twilight wasn't sure herself. She picked up the manual and read about something called 'the internet' and 'Amazon'. After reading further into it, she found nothing else about it except how to connect to the internet. After a groan, she attempted to connect to the internet with her kindle. The screen read 'no internet connection found.'

"What, but I did exactly what it said?!" Twilight exclaimed.

"You think this Amazon would be easy to connect to." Spike added. "By the way what is the internet and Amazon?"

"I don't know but I figured this Amazon must be some sort of store since this thing says it's a product of it. Although I've never heard of the internet." Twilight explained.

Twilight went to her books to see if she could find anything about the internet. A couple hours of research and no results. Twilight sighed at her grief and felt her sanity fade.

"Uh Twilight...maybe we should try another day." Spike suggested.

"Another day...another day..." Twilight mumbled.

Spike backed up knowing Twilight may have lost it.

"What do you mean another day?!" After all the time we put into figuring out this thing, we still are having difficulties with it!" Twilight exclaimed.

"Yup, she's lost it." Spike mumbled to himself.

"What's the point of this thing at all?!"

"And here comes the crazy rant..."

"First of all why is something like this designed when ponies clearly can't operate it? We have hooves for Celestia sake not appendages. Then there's using it. How could anypony select a book with the small wording and turning the pages can be humiliating if one doesn't know where to look? If I hadn't looked at the manual, I would've been turning the pages with my nose looking like a fool." Twilight ranted.

Spike raised an eyebrow, positive that he informed Twilight of how to turn the pages.

"But most of all..."

Spike backed up knowing the worst was to come.

"How can I add my books?! I have a huge collection yet there is no way for me to add them unless I have the internet. Next thing you know, they'd probably want me to re-purchase the books through Amazon in order to have them put inside this thing. Besides what is the internet anyways? Out of all my books there is nothing about it!" Twilight exclaimed.

Twilight let out a loud, irritated groan and tossed the kindle aside. Spike caught it before it hit the ground.

"That's it; I'm done with this thing. I'm just going to put away my books and work on my telescope." Twilight said as she started to put her books away.

Spike was about to speak up until a hiccup crept up on him. The loud hiccup let out some of his flames burning the kindle's screen. Twilight heard his burning hiccup and turned to investigate the noise. Spike paused for a couple seconds before trying to hide the burned device behind his back.

"Spike, what did you do?"

"It was an accident, I swear. I didn't mean to, it just came up on me and..."

"Spike it's alright."

"Huh? But I thought you'd..."

"It doesn't matter because I've realized how USELESS this kindle is to us ponies! Go ahead, do what you want with it. I planned on returning it anyways." Twilight crazily responded.

Spike was a little scared to see his friend go crazy once more. He thought of sending a message to Princess Celestia to see if she had a solution for Twilight's insanity. No sooner had the thought came to mind a knocking could be heard at the door. Twilight quickly opened it to see Derpy at her door once more.

"Oh hi Twilight, you aren't looking too good right now." Derpy said.

"Thanks Ditzy I haven't noticed. So what is it that you want because I'm very busy right now and...?”

"Oh well I'm here to pick up the package I delivered yesterday." Derpy answered.

Twilight was confused to what she heard. Derpy caught her expression and decided to give an explanation.

"I got a letter from the sender saying he wants to recall the package due to...um...unfortunate circumstances."

"Wait you mean the sender sent me something he knew that wouldn't work? Why would anypony due that?" Twilight asked.

"Don't know but he said that it was to be returned ASAP." Derpy finished.

Twilight quickly got the empty box it came in and put the kindle in it upside down so nopony could tell it was damaged. After re-sealing it, Twilight handed it off to Derpy with a crazed smile.

"Okay then...well I got go now so...bye." Derpy said as she quickly flew off.

Twilight sighed with great relief and started to make her way back to her room.

"Wait Twilight, it's damaged and you're just going..." Spike started but was silenced when her magic zipped his mouth shut.

"It's out of our hooves now therefore no longer our problem. Got it Spike?"

Spike nodded and felt his mouth unzip. He decided it was best to leave Twilight to herself the rest of the day and clean up the library. Meanwhile, Twilight went back to work on her telescope. After hours of pointless work, she could finally get something actually done. She began to work on it with her magic when she felt a tingling sensation in her nose. Twilight knew what this could spell and restrained the sensation back. A few second later she felt fine and started to get...

*Achoo*

The sneeze that she let out with her magic shot the screws out of place from her telescope, thus collapsing the thing. Twilight stared in disbelief of what had just happened. A few minutes later, Twilight saw what lay in front of her to be real and groaned at what a misfortunate day she had.

That's it. Hope you people/ponies liked it. If you feel as though you liked it, it went well, or II need to be maimed for something then do it in the comments or pm me. I'm always open for criticism no matter how brutal it is.
