What if... everything that had happened to Twilight had been a dream?

Everything that has ever ' happened ' to Twilight has been a dream. She never passed her entry test to get into Celestia's school, and fell into depression, ending up at a mental hospital. However, the other members of the Elements of Harmony ( Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and AppleJack ) really do exist, although they don't know each other.

First story I've ever written on here. Woot.

Just something I thought up while exercising ( Lol weird. ).

The meeting

"Ah, thank you all for coming," Celestia said, waving a hoof at the approaching ponies. Rainbow and Fluttershy kept exchanging worried glances, and occasionally whispering something to one another.

All six of the ponies stood in front of a window, peeking into the room of a unicorn... Twilight Sparkle. She had a nightgown on and was laying in the hospital bed. Several machines flashed behind her, monitoring her breathing and heart beat. Celestia gazed at the unicorn sadly. Rarity nervously straightened her mane, as if Twilight was looking at them. Rainbow Dash poked the glass, receiving a donk! and a glare from the Princess. Pinkie hopped in place, looking across the hospital hallways and into Twilight's room with interest. Fluttershy and Applejack stood near the back of the small crowd, quietly shuffling their hooves and looking at the floor.

"So who exactly IS this mare, Princess?" Rarity asked, breaking the silence.

"Her name, as you can see, is Twilight Sparkle," Celestia said, gesturing to a name card on the door, "And somehow, she KNOWS you all. I have a few guesses about how."

"Um... what is it, then? If you don't mind telling us, um... that is," Fluttershy said, barely making eye contact with anypony.

"Why, of course. You see, Twilight here has extremely strong magic. Definitely strong enough to, say, pass my school's entrance exam. But for some reason... it backfired. It hit her brain, causing severe damage. She's lost all of her memories. However, she still can use magic," Celestia said, glancing at the group, "it seems to me that she's been able to use telepathy to ' see ' what's going on around her. Ponies with her power can listen to the thoughts of others at the maximum of 100 miles away. Since this hospital is very close to where you all live... it just makes sense she could ' hear and see ' what you all are doing."

Fluttershy let out a gasp.

"But why us, Princess?" Applejack asked.

"I'm afraid that I don't know, my friend. It's a very interesting case."

Everypony continued to look at the Princess, awaiting further input. Silence spread across them, and they tried to process all of this information.

Rainbow Dash finally spoke up. "So what you're saying is, like, she can basically hear and feel what we think? And like, she knows who we all are?" She left out the question they were all thinking. She thinks she's our... friend?

"Yes. I couldn't have said it better myself."

"Do any of ya'll high-tech ponies know what exactly she's thinkin'? Just so we can get 'n idea?" Applejack asked.

"Actually, we do. We've got all of her thoughts about you 5, Princess Luna, and I recorded," Celestia turned to look at a nurse, quietly standing nearby, "Would you please get those for me?"

"Y-yes, Princess Celestia," the nurse replied, then hurried off to another room.

Silence over them again, all standing awkwardly in the hallway. Every once in a while they would receive a little wave from a passing doctor or nurse.

"While we're waiting... " Rarity said, startling them all, "How many of us actually know each other? I, of course know Pinkie... and Applejack. But what about you all?"

"I know Fluttershy. We were in flight camp together," Rainbow Dash proclaims, then looks at Pinkie, "I also know Pinkie Pie. I mean, who doesn't know Pinkie though?"

"That's right! I know everypony! And knowing everypony is cool, because that means you have a lot of friends! And having a lot of friends means that everypony likes you! And that means -" Applejack waves her hoof in Pinkie's face, knowing she won't stop unless someone forces her to.

"Ah know Rarity, " Applejack says, "We were at a party. Ah was sellin' apple foods, and she was showin' off in a dress she made. Ah also know Pinkie from the sweet shop. Ah was buyin' frosting."

"Hey! I was not showing off, I was simply letting others admire my fashion skills," Rarity retorted, glaring at Applejack. She fluffed her mane and turned her back to Applejack.

"Showin' off," Applejack muttered, rolling her eyes.

"Oooh! I know Rarity from a party, Rainbow Dash from around town, Fluttershy from the store. Also Applejack from the store," Pinkie interrupts, just as Rarity opens her mouth to reply to Applejack.

"I know Rainbow Dash... from flight camp," Fluttershy says quietly. "And Pinkie... from the store. But we only talked one time."

Celestia nodded to herself. So they're already acquaintances. This makes matters easier, she thought.

Pinkie interrupts once again, talking about cake flavors and icing while Rarity looks at her with disgust, probably imagining all the ways her dresses could be ruined by them.

"Hey! We've never introduced ourselves," Rainbow Dash says loudly, cutting off Pinkie, "I mean, we know who knows each other and stuff, but we don't know anything about each other!"

Applejack nods, than starts to speak. "Makes sense. Then ah'll go first. Ah work at Sweet Apple Acres, with my little sis Apple Bloom, my brother Big Macintosh, and Granny Smith."

I own Carousel Boutique, " says Rarity. " I make dresses and such."

"I work at Sugar Cube Corner! I get to make cakes, and candy, and taffy, and cupcakes, and all sorts of sweet stuff! "Pinkie says next, happily bouncing.

"I take care of animals at my home... " Fluttershy says next," I get to heal little sick creatures. "

"And I'm, " Everypony turns to look at Rainbow Dash, "On the weather crew! I'm also the ONLY pony to ever pull off a Sonic Rainboom."

Everypony gasps.

"Wow, that must've been super amazingly AWESOME!" Pinkie says, cheerfully looking at Rainbow Dash, who was grinning, "I wish I could've seen it!"

Princess Celestia chuckle to herself. They seemed to already know each other very well, even though they had just met. Celestia saw somepony walking over to them out of the corner of her eye. A nurse was walking over, bringing the records.

"Ah, here comes the papers," Celestia says, levitating the papers from the nurse and over to the group of onlooking ponies.

Okay, so that's the end of chapter one. Um... let me know if you like it. Comments are welcome. Chapter 2 is coming soon.

Confusion

Everypony crowded around the Princess, awaiting their ' stories ' from Twilight. The records were written as if they were letters to the 5, and not just notes. Celestia handed each paper to the according mare, then read hers.

It says here that she passed her entrance exam by hitting a dragon egg with a large bolt of magic, which made it hatch. The surge of energy became to much to bear, and she started transforming the other ponies in the room into random objects. Then I came in and calmed her down. After congratulating her, I made her my personal student. Celestia let out a chuckle. That was her dream, after all. Shaking her head, she continued to read. I told her that the dragon hatched from the egg was to be named Spike. After studying in the castle for many years with me, she realized that Nightmare Moon was coming back in a few days. She told me and I sent her to Ponyville to make preparations for the Summer Sun celebration, but secretly, it was for her to meet up with the other bearers of the Elements of Harmony.

Celestia sighed sadly, then looked into the room of the unicorn. She turned to the group of ponies, still reading their papers.

"I have some matters to attend to, girls. I must be going. Feel free to stay here as long as you want, okay?" she said, receiving nods from the small crowd. They all watched as she walked down the hallway and out of the door, leading into the lobby.

"So, um... maybe we should tell each other what our papers say. For fun, or whatever," Rainbow said, trying to keep her cool.

"I'll go fiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrssssssst! " Pinkie said in a sing-song voice, making everypony turn to look at her, " But maybe we should go to the cafeteria. To get out of everypony's way."

The rest of the group nodded, then followed Pinkie down the hallway. Fluttershy went last. As she turned to go, she noticed something twitch in the room. She looked back at Twilight, who seemed to be waving at her. Fluttershy let out a scared squeal and raced down the hall, crashing into Rainbow Dash.

"Hey! Watch it, Fluttershy!" she said, glaring.

"I-I'm sorry..." Fluttershy said, looking down at her hooves.

"Oh, uh it's okay. Sorry for snapping at you."

Fluttershy nodded then trotted down the hall, trying to keep up with the group.

What did I see back there...? Was she really waving? At ME? Fluttershy thought, glancing nervously around the hallway. Or maybe she was waving at a doctor. No, it wasn't me. She can't have recognized me. She doesn't even know who I am! Fluttershy grinned, trying to convince herself it was true. But something in the back of her mind told her that she was wrong.

"Princess Luna."

"Wha..?"

Luna was laying on her bed in her room, half asleep. She promptly fell off of her bed, glaring at her sister.

"Tia! This had better be good!"

"Well, it is. And I'd wish you'd stop sleeping constantly. It's bad for your health."

"Health, shmealth. And I'm the Princess of the Night. I need my sleep."

"Fine. But anyways, the reason I woke you up was important. I wanted you to look at these," Celestia said, levitating a paper to Luna.

"And what is this?"

"Notes. They're from the unicorn Twilight Sparkle. She claims that she 'knows' you and I. And a handful of other ponies."

"Who's this pony called Nightmare Moon?" Luna asked, showing the paper to Celestia. They were both sitting on Luna's bed, reading the papers together.

"That, supposedly, was you. Twilight believes that she beat you with the Elements, and saved the world from eternal night," Celestia said, stiffling a laugh, "And that you had turned back to your normal self."

"Me? But I've never done anything to this mare! How can she accuse me of such things?" Luna said, glaring at an imaginary pony, "This is nonsense!"

"Luna, calm down," Celestia said soothingly, putting a hoof on her sister's shoulder, "It's not all true. It's her imagination."

Luna gave a sigh and glanced at her sister. She nodded, then trotted out of the room, heading towards the Canterlot Gardens.

I'm going to have to meet this Twilight Sparkle, and see if this is all REALLY true. She thought. Maybe Tia is right. It could be just her imagination. But why would you think such things about others?

"So, um... can one of you tell me where we're going again?" Rarity asked trying to keep up with the group of ponies.

They had been walking for FOREVER, or it just felt like it.

"Trying to look for Twilight Sparkle's house. It was Pinkie's idea," Rainbow Dash said, losing altitude so she could talk to Rarity, "And I guess that what Pinkie says goes."

"Hmph. Well, I wish it didn't. I should not have to walk this far. I'm a lady, after all. Why can't we just take a taxi or something?"

"Don't whine at me, your highness. We might miss something if we take a cab."

"That was not whining, it was complaining. And why don't you just fly up high, and see if you find anything? That would be much quicker than this. "

"Hey, that's a good idea!"

Rainbow Dash zoomed up in the air, hovering just over the town hall. While Rarity was waiting, three familiar faces were approaching her.

"Oh, there's Rarity! Hey Rarity, hey Rarity, guess what we found?" Pinkie called out, trotting towards her. Rarity walked over, noticing how Fluttershy tried to stay as far away from Applejack and Pinkie as possible, and decided to stand right next to the fashionista.

"Yes, dear? What was it?"

"Absolutely nothin'. Pinkie here had us walking all over Equestria," Applejack said.

"N-nothing? No house? No library?"

"Nothin'."

"Well that's a shame. Pinkie, why exactly were we looking for it, anyways?"

"Well, just for fun! Didn't you guys have fun? Because I did! We saw all sorts of stuff, like-"

"Yes, Pinkie, I understand," Rarity said, interrupting Pinkie, who didn't really seem to mind, "But I wish you'd tell me before I have to do pointless things. All of this walking made my hooves dirty," She said, frowning.

"Rarity? You look nice to me. And you don't look dirty..." Fluttershy said quietly.

"Thank you, darling. At least somepony cares."

Applejack snorted, glancing at the unicorn but not saying anything. Rarity turned and glared at her menacingly.

"Were you going to say something, Applejack? By all means, feel free to do so."

As Applejack opened her mouth to speak, Rarity sighed, then trotted away, leaving Applejack to stand there awkwardly with the other two mares. Applejack frowned, then turned back to the group. Fluttershy seemed to be trying to sneak away from the group, and held completely still when she spotted Applejack's gaze. Pinkie was acting normal, for her at least, and bouncing in place. And well, that was it. Applejack looked up at the clouds, thinking she heard something. Finally, she turned back to the hopping pink mare.

"Are we missin' somepony here, sugarcube?" she asked Pinkie.

"Yep! Rarity, for one. And the other? Look up," she said, and just then a rainbow streak zoomed over the sky then landed next to them.

"Hey there, Rainbow! Whatcha doin' up there?"

"Looking for the library. Where'd Rarity go?" she asked, looking around.

"Oh, she left." Pinkie pointed down the road, aiming at the Carousel Boutique. Rarity was entering the building, not even turning around to look at them.

"Aw, why'd she leave?" Rainbow asked.

Applejack silently glared ahead, looking down the road. They were all silent for a minute, until Pinkie let out a gasp.

"Guys! Guys! Guess what?"

"What now, Pinkie Pie?" Rainbow asked, keeping herself from rolling her eyes.

"What if... this is a STORY?"

"Hm? What do you mean, Pinkie?" Fluttershy asked.

"I mean, what if somebody is sitting at a computer right now and reading this? And, and, what if we're all imaginary characters, and what if-"

"Pinkie Pie, you're crazy," Applejack interupted, and silently left with Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, leaving Pinkie Pie to sit in the middle of the road and know the answers to everything.
