Fast Thoughts at Night.
Rainbow Dash is frustrated.
Because life sucks.
She is the fastest, coolest pegasus and even the Element of Loyalty! She is awesome incarnate! You can't top that! No, seriously. She has saved Equestria many times! (with the help of her friends, but still...)
So why?
Why does it bother her that much?
The first was Rarity. At the time she was not bothered by it. She was happy for her, honestly. Next was Fluttershy. Since she is her close friend, she only wishes the best for the shy pegasus. She deserves to be happy, and she got really lucky. After a few months, Applejack was next. At this point, she was starting to see a pattern. Applejack's case was certainly different, but if she is happy with it, then it's okay.
But then came Pinkie's turn. She changed! Like really changed. She was not that 'hyper-happy' anymore. Those 'random' moments of hers started to be less frequent, and now her smile was one of true happiness.
This was the point where she started asking questions. The kind of questions that needed an answer. The most important being 'When is going to be her turn?'
But life had other plans.
Because life chose Twilight first.
Twilight! Even she had her chance before her! How was that possible? She is the only one left!
The only one without a coltfriend!
All of her friends were genuinely happier since they met their soulmates. Yes, that's the word. She can see it every time they reunite. All of them have changed but in a good way! She doesn't see their coltfriends that much, but while they are different and all, they have proven that they really love her friends, and she is happy for them.
But what about her?
She has tried. Many times.
But things just don't... click. Some of them don't care enough. Some others are just plain weird, and a few of them were... harsh on her. Very harsh. They used not-so-good words to tell her that she doesn't 'act' like a mare. It's not her fault! Things like make-up and fashion are just not her forte. Her friends have told her to be herself. That there's no secret, and that 'the right one' will come eventually.
Her friends also know that this is troubling her. They are trying to help her. Maybe they even know that she, being the only one without a coltfriend, makes her feel different, but in a bad way. They have noticed that she doesn't smile that often anymore, and lately, she has some very notorious mood swings.
She is frustrated. Their friends get to experience something she can't. She feels left out, and it's hard to be cool and awesome when these thoughts bother you day and night.
And here she is now, flying in the middle of the night.
Because that's the only thing that calms her down. But sooner or later, flying will not be enough. She knows this. She is just-
"What the-"
Something flew past her. Something fast.
Are you serious?
Great! Just what she needed! Somepony wants to be faster than her! Speed is by all means her forte! Sorry, but not tonight. Crisis can wait.
"Hey!"
Rainbow Dash managed to catch up to the other pony. From the looks of it, there was no doubt that it was a stallion. What is he doing here? It would be one thing to fly around Ponyville, but she is not there. This area is what she likes to call her 'private zone'. That's because nopony ever comes here. She is the only pegasus that flies around this area.
Now that she is right next to him, she can see him in detail: Fairly well-developed muscles, large and strong wings, and clearly bigger than her. How is he able to fly that fast? He is a dark blue stallion with a black mane.
She has to admit that he looks good.
"Huh? Who are you?" asked the stallion.
"Who are you?" asked Rainbow.
He stopped, so she did the same.
"Mist Spiral. Your turn."
"Rainbow Dash. What are you doing here this late?"
"I could ask you the same." said the stallion.
"I... let's just say that I felt the need to fly. Very fast."
"Gee. Are you reading my mind or what?" asked Mist. "Not that I have to explain it to you but... let's just say that I have problems, and I still don't know why, but flying during the night kinda relaxes me."
"You too, huh?" said Rainbow, getting the stallion's attention. "How come I've never seen you before? Are you from Cloudsdale?"
"Yeah, I am. Moved last week." was his answer. "I've also never seen you before. You must be a cool mare if you also like to fly during the night."
"Finally! Somepony who gets it!" cheered the Element of Loyalty. "Gotta practice a lot if I want to join the Wonderbolts."
"Then how about a race? Right here, right now. Let's forget our troubles and feel the rush of speed." offered Mist. "I usually like to fly alone. However..."
Mist Spiral did a quick movement flying around Rainbow, showing that he knows how to move mid-air.
"It's my first time seeing a cutie like you interested in flying fast. So, what do you say?"
Did he just... call her 'cutie'?
"Sure! I can race." was her answer, getting pumped up. "But I gotta warn you: I am competitive. I can't guarantee your pride will be left unscathed."
"No worries. If I get to see you all sweaty by the end, It's worth it." said Mist with a smirk.
He is definitely flirting with her! He is bold, too.
She likes that.
"That can work both ways, you know?" it was Rainbow's turn to smirk.
"I don't mind." Mist's smile grew.
"Me neither, big guy."
As they begin stretching for the upcoming race, Rainbow Dash realized that right now she feels happy.
Because life doesn't suck anymore.
