AU: Morty's family died and he gets sent with Rick to start a new life. High school is not easy and being bullied sucks, but sometimes you make friends in times of conflict. Updated at least twice a week.
It was shaping up to be a nice day. It was Morty's birthday and he was getting ready to head home for the day.
(Note he is only 7 years old)
"Oh boy I cant wait to see what my mom and dad have been busy doing", Morty exclaimed.
Just then he saw a fire truck race past while he was walking home.
"Huh that's weird. Why did it look like it was going to my house? Oh well", Morty said.
However when he got to his house he saw a terrible sight. His house was burnt and firemen were putting out the remains.
"W-what happened?" Morty said starting to cry.
Just then one of the firemen noticed him and said "I'm sorry son but I have some grave news. Your house caught on fire and your parents...well...are dead."
Morty had started to cry in earnest by this point.
Just then the fireman said "But I have some good news."
"W-what is it?" Morty managed to choke out.
"Your grandpa has offered to take you in."
Oh well at least I wont be alone. Morty thought.
7 years later.
It was Morty's first day of school and he was still sleeping.
"Wake the f#ck up Morty", Rick, his paternal grandfather said.
Rick was constantly getting drunk due to his daughter's (Morty's mother) death. What was worse for Morty at least is that Rick didn't seem to care at all for him.
In fact, sometimes Morty thought that Rick hated him.
Morty simply grumbled in his sleep.
"OK that's it" Rick said and walked away.
A few seconds later Morty got a huge dose of water over him. "Ok I'm up already", he exclaimed.
"Good", Rick said. "Now hurry the f#ck up or youre gonna be late. Not that I care." He mumbled under his breath the last part.
Eventually Morty was ready. "Alright I'm heading out", Morty yelled to Rick.
"Yeah yeah whatever", Rick said uncaring.
Later at school.
"Oh boy is that the new kid?"
"He looks pretty scrawny for a kid his age."
"Never mind that have you heard the rumors?"
"I heard he lives with a mad scientist."
"Well I heard he's just a juvenile delinquent."
Those were some of the whispers that followed Morty around.
Hmm let's see my first class is home room. Morty thought.
The teacher was named Ms Cheerelee. "Ok class let's get started on role call. When I call your name can you please stand up and introduce yourselves? Of course this is for the freshmen to get to know you better."
"Yes Ms Cheerelee", the class said.
"Sunset Shimmer."
"Hello I am Sunset Shimmer. I hope we all can be great friends." The girl known as Sunset had a purple skirt on, a pair of boots and fire red hair. She also had blue eyes.
Eventually it was Morty's turn to stand up. "I'm Morty. I just came here and...yeah..."
Soon homeroom passed and then it was time for his first period of the day.
Let's see here. My first period is art. Hmm sounds simple enough. Morty was looking at his schedule so he didn't see the person in front of him.
"Oof! Sorry about that...um..." Morty trailed off. In front of him was the principal of the school.
"It's quite alright. Though do try to pay attention next time. Oh where are my manners? I am principal celestia. Pleased to meet you..?"
"Um...I'm Morty ma'am. Um... I should probably be going or else I'm going to be late."
And with that he hurried to his next class.
"Hello everyone. I shall now do role call. When I call your name please say here. Fluttershy.
"Um...here."
Morty glanced at the girl next to him. She was quite pretty with her cream colored skin and pink hair. But what really caught Morty's attention were her eyes. They were turquoise and full of kindness.
For the rest of that period he tried to focus on the art teacher but for whatever reason it was hard because of Fluttershy.
Eventually the bell rang signaling it was time for lunch.
Oh boy. Should I or shouldn't I? That was the question Morty found himself thinking. You know what? I'm gonna do it.
Unfortunately he passed some jocks. And they didn't look nice.
Ok. Just keep your head down. Morty found himself repeating that in his mind.
"Hey you." One of the jocks was calling out to him.
But Morty thought it'd be smarter to avoid and ignore. The jocks that was calling out to him nodded to his cronies.
Right when Morty was passing them one of the jocks grabbed his backpack. "Hey let's see what this guy has in his pack",one of the jocks said.
"Hey! Give that back! Please..." Morty said.
"Or what? What's grandpa gonna do?" The jocks started teasing him while one of them was looking through his bag.
"Hey guys look! I think he's gonna cry!" One of them said.
And it's true. But these weren't tears of sadness. They were tears of anger.
"Give it back or I'll...I'll..." Morty couldn't even speak with how angry he was.
Then one of them said something that made him snap. "Why don't you just cry me a river and drown in it?"
Everything after that was a blur. Next thing Morty knew he was being escorted to the vice principal's office.
The vice principal was a slightly shorter woman than the principal. She had midnight blue hair.
"So what gives you the right to beat up some students?", she asked.
"You don't understand they were--"
"Please im not done talking yet." She waited then continued. "I will let you off with a warning this time but in the future remember that violence is NOT tolerated here at canterlot high. Understood?
Morty nodded then she said "You may go now. Lunch is about over anyway."
"Thanks ma'am." Morty mumbled under his breath.
I just have to survive. Morty found himself thinking later.
By the time Morty had gotten to the cafeteria the bell had already rung signaling that lunch was over.
"Really?!" Morty shouted. Well looks like I can skip lunch. I wasn't really hungry anyways. He thought.
"So let's see here. Last class of the day's... drama. Oh boy", Morty sighed.
He arrived just in time for role call. "Sorry I'm late!" Morty said.
Unfortunately with the way he burst in, everyone was staring at him. "Are you... Morty?" Said the teacher.
"Yes sir", Morty replied.
"Well please take a seat anywhere... oh wait there's only one more seat available." The teacher said.
"Um... Ok." So Morty took the only seat available which was right next to a girl with indigo colored hair.
"So before we get started on our assignments I should tell you all that I won't tolerate any talking unless of course we're in groups. Is that understood?"
"Yes sir", the class replied.
"Good. Now we shall be separating into groups of two. Given that it's the first day of school you can go do whatever under two circumstances: that you don't leave this room and be quiet. Or at least talk quietly because I have a splitting headache. Understood?
"Yes sir", the class replied again.
The girl next to Morty started to speak to him. "Do you want to be my partner?" She asked.
"Um... what? No offense but I don't even know you", Morty said.
"Oh yes where are my manners? I'm Rarity. Pleased to meet you", the girl said.
"You too", Morty said. After a brief silence in which Rarity continued to stare pointedly at him he said "Oh yeah. My name's Morty."
"Well Morty no offense darling but you don't seem the type to be in drama."
"Oh none taken and to be honest this was probably Rick's doing", Morty said.
"Who?" Rarity asked.
"Oh yeah you wouldn't know him. He's my grandfather... unfortunately" Morty said that last part under his breath.
"What was that dear?"
"Oh um nothing", Morty said.
"Ok then...oh did you know there's a dance coming up?" Rarity asked.
"Um like a prom?" Morty said.
Rarity replied " Something like that. Are you going to go? And more importantly is there someone you're taking?"
"I might if I'm not too busy and... wait what do you mean by that last part?" Morty asked.
She said "What do you think I mean? I mean like a date of course."
Morty started getting nervous and said "I I don't... I mean... that is..."
"Darling are you alright? You look nervous for some reason" Rarity said starting to get a bit concerned.
Thankfully the bell rang at just that moment. "Imsorryigottagobye", Morty said and left very fast.
"Um...bye?" Rarity said confused.
Morty was running somewhere. Where he didn't know yet but as long as he could escape from Rick he didn't care.
Eventually he got tired and went into a place called Sugarcube Corner.
OK I'm here...where ever "here" is. Morty thought.
"GAH!" he exclaimed. He turned around and saw a girl with extremely pink hair.
"Is this your first time here? Oh, I bet it is because I've never seen you here before! What's your name? Oh, my name's Pinkie Pie! Nice to meet you!"
The girl (now known as Pinkie Pie) said all of that very fast. At first, Morty was shocked but then he said "Hi... I guess. My name's Morty. And-"
"Hold that thought", Pinkie said. She then took out her phone and looked at it. "Hm, the girls are slightly late. But it's ok. I know they'd never ditch out on me!"
"Uh... what's going on again?" Morty asked.
"Oh didn't you know? The girls and I are planning to go to the beach this weekend!" Pinkie exclaimed.
"Oh..." Morty said then mumbled so she couldn't hear "Must be nice to have friends that care about you."
"What was that?" Pinkie asked.
"N nothing", Morty said.
Then the girls walked in. Morty recognized at least half of them. But there were two he didn't.
One of them had rainbow-colored hair and magenta eyes. He could tell just from a glance she was an athlete.
The other had green eyes blonde hair and was wearing a cowboy hat.
"Oh hey, Morty", the one with the sunset-colored hair-- Sunset Shimmer if he remembered correctly--said upon seeing him.
"So this is the one you were telling us about huh?" the rainbow-haired one said.
"W wait you know about me?" Morty said fearing the worst.
" Yes remember in drama class darling? We met there", Rarity said.
"Oh yeah I remember now", Morty said laughing nervously.
So then they chatted for a while until Morty checked the time.
"It's already that late? Oh, man Ricks gonna kill me", Morty said without thinking.
"Um...if you don't mind me asking...whos Rick?" Fluttershy asked.
Morty then started getting nervous. Come on Morty think of something! Anything!
"Um, he's... my godfather," Morty said with a little hesitation.
"Oh okay", the girls said.
Applejack of course saw through his lie. "Are ya sure sugarcube?" she asked.
"Um of course I'm sure. Why wouldn't I be sure? Ok it's getting real late and I'm tired so I'll see you all tomorrow right?" Morty said all this on a speed to rival Pinkies.
"Um... it's only 6:30", said Fluttershy but by then he was already gone.
That was a close one Morty thought to himself as he walked home. Ok, I'm fine as long as I don't let anything else slip out.
"So where have you been?" Rick said right when he walked through the door.
"That's for me to know and you to find out", Morty said.
"You know what I'm tired and I don't really care. Just do what you want I suppose", Rick replied.
"Really?" Morty asked.
"No. Now get in bed and no talking you understand me?" Rick asked.
Morty said nothing.
"Hmm, I'll make you regret those words you just said to me," Rick said when Morty went into his room.
"Remember those friends I told you about a few days ago?"
"Yeah what about them?"
"Well they want me to go over to a sleepover this Saturday."
"Yeah so?"
"Can you let me go? Please?"
Rick thought about it for a while and then said "Ok you can go."
Morty said "Thanks Rick. I-"
"But you have to do something for me first", he said.
'Of course' Morty thought.
"What is it?" He said.
Rick gestured to the basement where he did his unspeakable things. "Follow me."
He led him to a wall that had a bunch of newspaper clippings.
"Um Rick what is all this?" Morty asked nervously.
"It's my latest project", he said. "There have been things-- strange things-- happening here in this town. And the school you go to seems to be the source."
"Um so?" Morty said.
"What I want you to do is a little bit of spying. If you see or notice anything-- and I mean anything-- weird come straight to me. I want to be the one who solves this. No I will be the one to solve this."
"Um but what if I'm with my friends and something happens?" Morty said.
"Then make an excuse up. I don't care what happens then", Rick said.
"Um I don't know Rick", Morty said.
Morty thought about it and sighed. "Fine I'll do it", he reluctantly agreed. 'Not that I have a choice' he thought bitterly.
Morty was just about to leave when Rick said "Oh and one more thing? Don't tell anyone."
"Alright."
In the morning there was a test and Morty spent most of last night-- not including the time where he had to talk to Rick-- studying for it. So it makes sense that when he arrived at school he was extremely tired.
When lunch arrived he went to sit at his normal table. Which was to say the table where no one sat at.
"Hey! Morty! Over here!"
He turned and looked at Pinkie Pie waving at him.
He simply sighed and went over to where she was.
"Yeah Pinkie? What is it?" He asked tiredly.
"Why do you always sit over there?" She asked.
"Because no one wants to sit near me. Never has been never will be", he explained.
"Now that I can't believe dear", said a voice behind him.
He turned around so fast.
"Wait. Rarity? What are you--"
She raised an eyebrow at him. "This is where me and the others always sit."
"Others?" Mortys question was soon answered as five other girls appeared behind Rarity.
"So this is where you all sit? OK then I'll just--"
"Oh no you don't!" Pinkie Pie said and she made him sit down.
"What's the big idea?!" Morty said.
"Morty we need to talk", Sunset said.
When the other girls were all seated she continued.
"We know you're hiding something. And we want to know what."
Morty said "Do you really want to know?"
Fluttershy said "Please tell us. We only want to help."
Morty chuckled dryly and said "There's no getting out of this is there? Fine. I'll tell you on the condition that you tell nobody else. I don't want people to think I'm a charity case or something."
They all said "Cross my heart and hope to fly stick a cupcake in my eye."
Morty sighed and said "Hmm where to begin? I'll just start at when it all happened.
So he told them. He told them about the fire him getting sent to live with his grandpa everything. Well almost everything.
"And that's pretty much it", he finished with a sigh.
There was silence for a while then without warning they all got up walked over to him and gave him a hug.
'Um...this is new. I don't know how to feel about this' he thought to himself.
When the hug broke Applejack said "Well I can't believe it. To go through that much...I don't know how you did it."
"Sometimes I don't know either", he mumbled to himself.
Fluttershy asked "Does it hurt? When you think about them that is."
Morty replied "Of course. It hurts every day but I try not to let it bring me down."
Morty was running. From what he couldn't tell, but he knew he had to keep running.
Then there was a voice. "Your time is up... Goodbye Morty..."
Morty woke up with a start.
'Wow, what a weird dream' he thought.
'Wait what time is it?'
The clock read 10:02.
"Oh, shit I overslept!" He exclaimed.
The day was currently Saturday. It was also the day he was invited to go to the mall with his friends.
So he rushed to get everything done. Oddly enough Rick wasn't home that day.
'Probably getting some groceries or something' Morty thought to himself sarcastically.
So he got on his bike and went to the mall.
"I'm sorry! I'm late I know", he said when he got there.
"It's alright. You're not the only one you know", Sunset told Morty.
He soon realized they were the only ones out of their group to be there.
"Where's everybody else?" he asked.
"Well, Rainbow Dash said she'd be a little late. Mostly because she had practice today. Rarity said the same thing that she'd be late because she had some orders to finish. Applejack said she had chores and Fluttershy said she's busy at the animal shelter so she won't be able to come today."
"Oh..." Morty said a little disappointed.
Mainly to cheer him up Sunset said " Hey I know. Why don't we play at the arcade to pass some time?"
It was slightly later into the day around noon. Sunset was slightly curious about Morty's relationship with Rick.
"Well that's quite hard to answer but I'll try to anyway."
So he cleared his throat and set off.
"You see remember when I told you my parents died? Well, Rick offered to take me in. For the first three and a half years, it was alright."
"But then he started taking me places. And I don't mean like to the park or the zoo. I mean like different dimensions."
"Wait. So you're saying?" Sunset asked.
"Yeah. He took me to like dimensions that sometimes made sense. Most of them however didn't."
"Oh, and by the way, there were some very dangerous dimensions that I and he went to and barely got out with our lives. Like there was this one space monster that was chasing us and it had a good reason to chase us."
"Which was?" Sunset asked.
"We had taken its eggs. Now before you go saying that wasn't so bad I had accidentally dropped one of them. Everything went to Hell at that point."
"Well, there's something else I don't get. Why didn't someone else take you in?"
"Like who? I never got to even know my grandma because she supposedly died way before I was born. And every time I ask him about her he just says it's for me to know and you to never find out."
"Okay..."
Seeing that Morty was becoming slightly depressed she decided to change the subject.
"What about school?"
"Hm?"
"Surely you had some friends or..."
Morty just laughed. "Before I met you and the girls I had no friends. Like none whatsoever. I always got bullied and to make matters worse some of my peers had found out about Rick."
"That doesn't seem so bad."
"Well to make a long story short I got bullied twice as bad when they found out. They always called me that kid with the crazy grandpa."
"Wow. I don't know what to say", Sunset said.
There was silence for a moment then Morty said "I'm going to go take a leak."
"Ok. Just hurry back", Sunset said.
When Morty got done doing his business he was surprised to see the rest of his friends there.
"Hey Morty?" Sunset asked.
"Yeah?"
"I told them what you told me. I hope that's okay..."
"It's alright", he said.
"I for one can't imagine how you put up with him", Rarity said.
"Yeah dude why don't you just run away?" Rainbow Dash added.
"I don't know", Morty said.
But the truth was he had thought about running away. Several times. He even attempted it once.
But Rick somehow found him and made him go on twice as many adventures in a week.
"Where would I even go? I have no other relatives. None that I know of at least", he said.
"Well I suppose you could just stay with one of us", Sunset said.
"R really? You would do that?" Morty asked surprised.
They all nodded.
Morty felt himself tearing up. Nobody had ever shown him this much kindness in a long time.
"I...I don't know. I'd have to think about it", he finally said.
To change the subject he said, "So on another note uh you guys heard of a meeseeks box?"
They all shook their heads.
"I'm not surprised", Morty said. "Rick says nowadays they're almost as rare as a portal gun."
"So what is a meeseeks box? Um if you don't mind us asking", Fluttershy said.
"I don't have one on me but I'll tell you what. At school next week I'll see if I can't snag one of Ricks. It's easier to demonstrate than to explain it. Alright?"
"Okay," the girls said.
"Alright. Now that that's out of the way lets go have some fun" Morty said.
One night, while Morty was sleeping, Rick barged into his room obviously drunk.
"Hey wake up Morty I got to show you something", he slurred.
"Wait, Rick? What's going on I have school tomorrow", Morty groaned.
"Come on Morty. It's gonna be cool", Rick said dragging Morty out of bed.
"Hey wait stop! You're pulling me too hard", Morty said.
"So Morty how do you like my flying vehicle?" Rick still drunk asked.
"Yeah it's it's great Rick", Morty said unenthusiastically.
"Morty I- I made a bomb", Rick said.
"Wait you what?!" Morty said, now fully alert.
"We're gonna make a whole new world down there Morty", Rick said.
"Right now we're gonna pick up one of those girls that you hang out with. You know, the one with the purple hair."
"Wait you mean Rarity? But why?" Morty asked.
"It's gonna be the new Adam and Eve, Morty. And you're gonna be Adam."
"Ohhh", Morty groaned.
"And what's her face is gonna be Eve", Rick said.
"No, you can't!" Morty said shoving Rick away. "Rarity doesn't even...I mean I don't even like her like that! But forget that you can't just kill them all like that!"
"I know what you're trying to say, Morty. And relax I'm not the kind of guy who would try to fool around with Rarity", Rick said.
"What are you on about Rick?" Morty asked.
"You don't have to worry about me getting with Rarity Morty. You don't have to worry about that at all."
"I don't care about Rarity! You--"
"You know what? You're right", Rick said. "Let's forget her. She's probably nothing but trouble."
He then presses a button which activates the bomb.
"That's it Rick. I'm taking the wheel", Morty said standing up.
He then jumps on top of Rick fighting him for the wheel. Eventually, Rick says "Alright you win. I'm landing. I'm landing."
Then in a nearby desert, he lands. "Oh thank the lord", Morty said.
"That was just a test by the way Morty", Rick said.
"Really?" Morty asked.
"Yeah sure why not", Rick said and then fell asleep.
"Activating bomb", a robotic voice said.
"Um Rick?" Morty said.
Later that day at school...
It was lunchtime. Most students were enjoying their lunch...except for one.
"And then I said oatmeal are you crazy?" Pinkie said.
"Hey has anybody seen Morty? He wasn't in homeroom today", Sunset said.
"Maybe he's running late" Applejack suggested.
Just then Morty walked in looking noticeably exhausted.
"Good heavens Morty! What happened?" Rarity exclaimed.
Morty said "I just didn't get enough sleep last night I guess."
"So your grandpa decided to let you sleep in?" Fluttershy asked.
"You know Rick he doesn't really..."
And then Morty promptly fell asleep.
"Yeah it's obvious he's been adventuring with Rick", Rainbow Dash said.
"Yeah", the rest of them replied.
"Hang on I got this", Pinkie said.
She walked up to Morty and screamed in his ear. He immediately woke up.
"Wha what happened?" He asked. "Did I fall asleep? Sorry."
"So you were telling us about why Rick lets you sleep in on a school day?" Sunset asked.
"Yeah he doesn't really care about my education and whatnot. Says it's a waste of time."
"How could he say that? And more importantly why's he letting you go to school if that's the case?" Rainbow asked.
Morty thought back to when he asked Rick those questions.
One week earlier.
"Come on Rick why do I have to go again? Like y you don't care about school and--"
"Listen Morty. You're right. I don't care about school in general. But remember that...talk we had?" Rick asked.
"Which one? We've had a bunch of talks", Morty said.
"About the strange happenings going on? That's the reason why you're going to school. Now help me carry these ingredients."
Present time.
Morty sighed. He hated having to lie to his friends but he convinced himself it was for the greater good.
"I don't know to be honest", he said.
Just then the bell rang.
"Well I'll see you girls later", he said and ran out.
Later the local bully came when Morty was getting ready to head to his next class
"Hey chump", he said.
"Hey", Morty said avoiding eye contact.
"So which one do you have a crush on?" The bully asked.
"W what?" Morty said.
"I've seen you hanging out with those girls and let me tell you they're way out of your league", the bully said.
"What are you talking about? I I don't have a crush on any of them", Morty said.
Just then the bully froze. Rick stepped out from behind him.
"Hey Morty. Come on I got an errand to run and I need your help", he said.
"Um what'd you do to eric? Is is he gonna be okay?" Morty said.
"Yeah yeah he'll be alright, now are you coming or not?" Rick said impatiently.
"Um I don't know. I don't think I can skip school again", Morty said.
"What you think I can do this all by myself? Come on Morty."
"Um okay I'll do it. But by the way how do you plan to explain this?"
"Explain what?" Rick asked.
"You know, how and why I'm missing school a lot. Like my friends--"
Morty stopped and started to think about something. But before he could get too far Rick interrupted and said "Just leave that to me. Now come on!"
The second they went through the portal Rarity came walking by and saw Eric.
Oh my goodness! It's eric! Okay Rarity just play it cool.
She went to walk up to Eric but as soon as she did he fell and shattered into a bunch of pieces killing him.
Rarity screamed.
Bonus scene
Principal Celestia and Vice principal Luna were currently talking with Rick about Morty. Specifically why he was missing and ditching school.
"Now no offense but I really don't give a crap about school", Rick said. "As for why he's ditching...um..."
"Yes?" Celestia asked.
He immediately pulled out a neuralyzer and shot them.
"Wait what are you doing here Mr sanchez?" Luna asked.
"I honestly don't know but I will be on my way now", he said.
