Celestia was standing on her balcony lowering the sun. She was exhausted after her meeting with the dragon ambassador. She was trying to set up a trading route from Equestria, through the badlands and into dragon land. The dragon ambassador was never easy to deal with. It was days like these she wished her faithful student was still living in Canterlot.

There were two ponies Celestia let her guard down with. Her sister and her faithful student. It would probably be nice talking to Luna too, but she was not the same as Twilight. After the thousand years things had changed between them. They were not as close as before. They mostly spoke about political things now.

“Oh Twilight, I wish you were here,” Celestia said with a sigh. And like Faust had heard her, she felt a familiar magic, followed by a bright purple blitz and a pop.

“Twilight?”

Celestia turned. What she saw next, no one could have prepared her for. There on the ground laid her faithful student. Bloody and bruised. Celestia was shocked beyond belief. She quickly galloped over to her student and sat down before her. She put her head in her hooves. She was about to carry her over to the bed when Twilight spoke.

“I... I...” Twilight barely seemed able to talk. “I... love you Tia.”

Before Celestia could even take in what she heard Twilight closed her eyes. Her chest stopped rising. She just laid there.

“No, no this is not happening,” Celestia said hugging the lifeless mare in her hooves. “No. This can’t be happening. It has to be a bad dream,” It hit her like a sonic rainboom. It was really happening. Her faithful student was gone. A tear fell from her cheek, followed by another.

Celestia was now crying openly. It felt like the world was falling apart. This was the worst moment of her life. She just wanted to go back and change it all. The pain she felt when she had banished her sister was nothing compared to this. Twilight was more special to the princess than she had ever imagined.

Over the thousands of years the princess had lived she had never felt true love. It’s said that the princesses only feel true love once. When they find their loves and marry them they become immortal. That way the princesses will never have to experience their loved ones die. Celestia had found this true love. The mare lying in her hooves was the one, but Celestia had been too late. How could she not have realized it earlier? Her true love, lost forever.

She should have seen the signs. She should have known. She knew that she knew all along. She was just too damn busy ruling the land. She would trade the whole Equestria just for another minute with Twilight. Just one more minute with the pony of her dreams. Of course that was not possible and Celestia knew that.

Giving up. Giving up is the easy way out. Celestia had never been the one to take the easy way out, but right now. Right now her willpower was beyond ruined. There was no way she was going to fight through this. To Tartarus with her subjects. They could rule their own land. Maybe her sister could do it. Now it was her turn to take the easy path.

Killing an Alicorn requires two things. The first is a dagger made of pure gold. The second is an enchantment to the dagger only the Alicorn herself can cast. Due to this the only way an Alicorn can die is if they give in to their killer. This however is not known by a lot of ponies.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Life was worthless now. Why would she want to continue down this road of pain? There was nothing waiting for her at the end. She had always stayed on this road, waiting for the small path leading her to joy. It had never been easy. Ponies she cared for died, times of chaos reigned and villains kept trying to take away what she had worked so hard for. For years the path she had been waiting for laid before her, she was just too blind to see.
She was so used to this pain that she had missed the train that would take her into paradise. Now there was only pain. Why would she keep living in pain for the rest of her endless life if there was nothing waiting for her at the end? Because she had a land of subjects to keep happy? That was now Luna’s new job. Celestia was going away. Far away.
She slowly laid down Twilight´s head on the ground. She trotted over to the bookshelf located on one of the walls. She pulled a book and the shelf glided open. Behind it was a small box. Celestia opened the box and grasped the contents in her magic. She levitated it over to her desk where she sat down.
She grabbed a quill and a paper from the drawers on the desk. She quickly wrote down some words before laying the note on her bed. She then moved back to the balcony where Twilight´s body was. She laid down before Twilight and gave her a soft kiss on the forehead. The pain was going away soon; all it took was a little concentration and a sting.
The sun goddess cast a spell on the object she was holding with her magic. It was softly glowing with yellow magic. She was ready for what was to come. She would soon be happy again. She would soon be reunited with her faithful student, with her love. All it took was a little sting. She lifted the knife up to her heart. Everything was finally going to go her way. She felt a small sting, and then the darkness came.
“With the death of my student I could not take it anymore. From this day forth, Luna will rule the land of Equestria. I’m sorry I have failed you my subjects, but mostly I’m sorry that I have failed you, Luna. May the true love find its way to you one day.
Yours forever, Princess Celestia of Equestria.” Luna sighed.
“These were the final words of my sister. May the memory of her live on forever.” Luna finished her speech before unveiling a huge momentum. To the left was Twilight, proud as ever and to the right was Celestia. They were locked in a powerful hug. The statue was placed in the castle garden as a reminder of two of the greatest heroes Equestria had ever seen.
The bed was starting to tempt Twilight a lot. The thought of the soft madras and warm blanket folding around her while she slowly drifted off to sleep was the only thing on her mind at this moment. That however did not last long as a pink blur shot across her vision disturbing her daydream. She had completely zoned out during the movie she was watching with her friends. She figured she missed the ending due to the credits rolling over the screen.
She said goodbye to her friends and literary pushed them outside before closing the door with her magic. When Twilight wanted her sleep, no one was going to stop her. Of course every rule has its exception. This time the exception came in form of a dark blue alicorn. Wait, what would Luna want with her this late in the evening? Oh no where was her manners.
Twilight gave a short bow before asking. “What brings your presence to my humble library my princess?”
Luna let out a chuckle. “Twilight Sparkle, thou art our friend. Thou shall not feel need to be so formal around us.”
“I’m sorry princess, it’s kind of a habit. Do you want something to drink or eat? Also just feel free to take a seat wherever feels the more comfortable.” Twilight said a bit nervously.
“I’m afraid we’re not here only for a friendly visit. There is a little problem we need help with. Would you be able to do us a favor?”
“Sure, anything for a princess!” Twilight exlaimed
“Okay, we need thou to stand still.” Twilight looked confused but complied. Luna’s horn flicked for a second.
“Soundproof spell?” Twilight looked a bit worried now.
“Yes, what thou is about to hear is highly classified.” Now that Luna had Twilight’s full attention she could put her plan into movement. A fact known by few is that alicorns can cast some of the easier magic without causing their horn to glow. This is exactly why Twilight did not see what came next.
Luna levitated a ring made specifically to block the wearers magic flow onto Twilights horn. At the same time she tied her legs together with a magic rope.
“Wh-What are you doing?” Twilight stammered.
“Oh you silly mortals. Did thou really think the elements of harmony was going to cure us from ourselves? Nightmare Moon was never another personality, she was me all along. When thou used the elements of harmony all you did was knock our magic out for a day. We simply used that to gain Tia’s trust and make sure thou all thought we was a good princess again. Now all we have to do is get two of the most powerful magical ponies in Equestria out of the picture, and the night will last forever.”
“The elements of harmony and Celestia...” Realisation came upon Twilight. “How do you plan on killing Celestia? She’s even more powerfull than you!”
“We never said we would kill her. Thou are going to kill her.”
“WHAT?! I would never kill my mentor!” Twilight got a hoof to the face.
YOU FOOL! Thou does not speak to a princess like that!” Luna replied in the royal canterlot voice. “Now thou will kill thy mentor and thou will feel good about it. It’s only fair that we explain the process for thou, after all we are going to kill you.” With that statement Luna gave Twilight an uppercut. A loud crack was to be heard.
“Our dear sister Celestia is in love with thy Twilight. She might not know it yet, but she is. Alicorns only love once, and if that love dissapears the alicorn will become mad. That is why we’re only tree alicorns left. All Tia need is a little nudge to realise that she loves thou.” The alicorn gave her a double buck in the side. Several bones cracked. Luna could not help but grin at the sight before her. Bloodied and bruised Twilight laid there. Luna guessed she had only a few minutes left.
Luna cast two spells on Twilight. The first was a minor mindcontroll spell. It told her to teleport to Celestia’s bedchambers and admit her “love” for her. The other was a strong want it need it spell. This combo should be more than enough to give Celestia thoughts nopony should have.
Now all Luna had to do was to wait. Oh how much fun this had been. Tomorow she would be the lone ruler of Equestria, and no one could stop her. There was a small pop of purple light and Twilight was gone.
Meanwhile in sugarcube corner.
Spike had been helping Pinkie Pie out most of the evening baking a huge supply of cupcakes.
“Thank you for all the help Spike! I would never had been able to do it without you.” Pinkie exclaimed happily. She was about to charge in for a hug when her ears started flopping. It was followed by a twitchy tail, wobbling knees, itchy back and another twitchy tail. Her mane deflated and the huge grin that had just mounted her face dissapeared.
“Twilight’s dead.”
