Altered Destiny

By Admiral Q

As Celestia's sun shone through the window, it was time for Star Wanderer to begin her day. She was a unicorn with red fur and a gold mane with a red zigzagging stripe going through it, with a gold six-pointed star as a cutie mark. She washed up, had breakfast and got her saddle bags on and locked up her house.

Most of the time, Star hired herself out as a unicorn for hire. Whenever a construction crew or a company or a family needed a job done that only a unicorn could do, she was the mare Ponyville hired. But that just payed the bills. Her real job was finding lost artifacts, especially magical ones. Every few months or so she would take a break and head out, searching for an artifact she had heard about.

Basking in the glow of the sun for a minute, she looked at the latest addition to the humble town, the Rainbow Castle. Created from a chest from the Tree of Harmony itself, it now served as the home for the fourth Princess of Equestria, Twilight Sparkle. Star considered herself fortunate; while not as close to the Princess as her fellow Element bearers, she had become good friends with her. Their love of knowledge and magic made that easy, and Star was proud to say that she could give Twilight a run for her money in the magic and spells department. Twilight always had the edge, though. Heck, she was the Element of Magic, so it was only logical that she best Star every time, but that fight was getting harder and harder for Twilight to win. That had all been before her ascension to the rare ranks of alicorns, and now Star was completely outclassed, but she still occasionally duelled with Twilight, if only to see how well she mastered a spell.

And speaking of a certain purple alicorn, she saw Twilight walking nearby. “Hey Twi!” Twilight looked over and smiled at the sight of her friend.

“Hey Star, going adventuring again?”

“YUP! Got a clue about something in the western forest emitting magic energy, so I'm going to check it out. So, what are you up to today?”

Twilight sighed. “I've got to mediate a debate later today with some of the business heads for the town and the local branch of the Children of the Night. The mayor asked me to help after she failed to solve the issue.”

In the months since the Princess Luna had returned with the Children of the Night, a group that loved the night and had Luna herself as a patron had been reintegrating themselves into Equestria. Most had decided to form a new town while the rest spread out. Two of the biggest branches were in Cloudsdale and here in Ponyville, with a population of nearly double the town’s size. And that has lead to some head banging. Once, out of curiosity, Star had asked a Child of the Night name Lunarmoon why so many came to Ponyville. The answer she got was this: one, it was close to Canterlot, thus allowing them to be close to Princess Luna, and two, it was the closest town to the Royal Pony Sisters’ Castle. When they had heard of its existence, they had flocked to Ponyville, and while they were still building their section of town, they planned to continue the restoration that Twilight had begun on the place.

And three, Sweet Apple Acres. Star couldn't argue with that last one.

“Ouch. I think you need more luck in that than I do,” Star said to Twilight.

“Thanks a lot,” Twilight said sarcastically, causing Star to chuckle.

“Well if any can do it, it should be the Princess of Friendship herself. See ya later Twi.” Twilight shook her head.

“Have fun, Star.” And the two parted company.

For the next several days, Star traveled to the western forests with not much to break the routine of walk, eat, and sleep. Finally, she entered the forest, focusing on her horn and its ability to sense magic. She slowly trekked her way through the woods, slicing any vine or branch that got in her way, not to mention any creature that tried to hunt her.

For hours she plowed through the forest, until she came upon a ruined castle. She slowly approached the ancient ruin. The thing was in even worse condition than the Royal Pony Sisters’ Castle. The bulk of the stonework was covered in vines and decay. She had to be very careful in this place, for magic was being emitted from it. She passed the outer wall with no trouble, and went through what had once been the courtyard and the main doorway. Star looked around and was amazed at how the place stayed up. So many supports were gone or compromised that the place seemed to stay up on sheer stubbornness. She stepped on a stone in front of her and it crumbed and fell into some darkness below.

“Great, now I have to watch where I step.”

She had a couple more close calls before she ended up in the center of the castle ruins. She stopped and took a breath before focusing on her horn and which way she needed to go.

“Let's see…downward...I have to go downward.”

She spent a few minutes looking before she found a stairway going down. Slowly, step by step, she walked down the stairway. Good thing too, for halfway down, a step gave way and she nearly fell. She just managed to teleport to another step, which was thankfully solid beneath her feet. She spent a couple minutes taking deep breaths. “THAT was too close.” She continued down the stairway, being very cautious. A couple more steps gave way, but this time she didn't have all her weight on that hoof, so she didn't go plunging to her death.

As she neared the bottom, she saw a light. It pulsed white, gold and red and illuminated the surrounding area. It definitely helped her spot places not to go. She made her way down, but still managed to get another weak step. That caused a cascade, and several stones fell. She had to dodge around until they finally stopped.

She looked around. She was in a big room, and in the middle was an orb that emitted the pulsing light. She cautiously approached the orb, its magic washing over her like wind. The closer she got, the warmer it got. It was like a fireplace. It felt nice. Before she knew it, she was right next to the orb. Before she could go further, though, she heard cracking and more of the ceiling collapsed. On instinct she dodged, but her horn hit the orb, and then she knew nothing but white.

When she opened her eyes again, she was in a strange room. It was seemingly lit by the ceiling, and everything was bathed in a white light. The room had a red carpet, and in front of her was a very large window showing stars and some construct she had never seen before. Just in front of the window, she saw a pair of desks with some kind of creature behind them. The creatures had small manes and odd fur, if what they had counted as fur. The way they moved reminded her of Spike, Twilight's baby dragon. She looked around some more and saw a door in an alcove on the upper left side of the room, then another desk with another creature working behind it, then a wall filled with moving lights, which more of the creatures touched.

Looking to her immediate left, she saw the start of a wooden railing tinted red with two seats, one very small with little back support, and the other larger with complete back support. The larger was occupied by another creature with a long brown mane and green eyes. As Star got closer, she realized that what she had mistaken for fur was really a kind of outfit these creatures wore. This particular creature was mainly black, with blue around the barrel area and forelegs. It wore a pin on its left side with a weird-looking silver triangle. It was like the triangle was trying to be a star, and it had a slim oval in gold behind it. It wore two solid gold pipes with a third hollow one.

Star then looked to her right and saw a similar layout to what was on the left. The creature next to her on that side wore a similar outfit to the one she had seen before, but this one was red where the other was blue. She looked down at herself, and she had changed. She looked like the creatures, but she had a lot more gold with the red coloring on her outfit. As strange as this place seemed, it also felt familiar.

"Admiral." She felt herself perk up, and looked behind her to see the top of the red wood railing and a creature behind her. "I have the Defiant on long range sensors."

"Just the Defiant?" She, or more correctly, he, asked. That was a male voice coming from Star’s mouth.

"No sir, I read two Klingon ships behind her. A bird of prey and a Vorcha attack cruiser."

"Brave, but foolish. Between the Defiant, us and Deep Space Nine, they will be slaughtered if they try to attack."

"Maybe, not sure. Reading several ships de-cloaking."

"Onscreen." The window changed in front of Star, showing several shimmers that she guessed were ships. Some kind of invisibility spell, she guessed. Dozens of ships appeared like predatory birds, their menacing green hulls poised to attack.

"Red alert!" Star said in her male voice, and she saw a change in her surroundings. Red lights began flashing and a noise went off. The creatures around her acted with more haste and were more tense. From her right, she heard a male voice.

"I can't believe we are about to fight the Klingons. Decades of peace and an alliance, gone like that."

"Fear can motivate people to do stupid things, Jack,” Star heard herself say. "The Dominion could be among the greatest threats to not only the Federation, but the Alpha Quadrant itself. Especially since its top leadership can change forms. The Klingons have reason to worry, but sadly, have acted hastily."

"Sir, the lead ship has hailed Deep Space Nine,” the male behind her reported.
"Let's listen in." What followed, Star didn't fully understand, but it sounded like one group had a group of VIPs and the other wanted them even though it had been proven they weren't changelings. Yeah, that would be a big deal if these changelings are like the ones she heard of. But the first group was refusing.

"And here we go. Good thing the civilians are back on Bajor." She felt the room shake as it was fired upon. "Mr. Hemmerjer, phasers full spread, and unleash the torpedoes. Spare nothing. Helm, start moving us within firing range of the Negh'Var. Take her out, and it will dishearten the Klingons a bit."

The view moved, and Star saw beams and bolts of light fly both ways. Ships were engulfed in flame. She felt what was now her own ship shake a lot. After only a few minutes, one of the walls exploded. A fire started by that wall.

“Damage report!” she heard herself yell.

"Decks 10, 14, 20, 25, and 30 through 35 all have hull breaches. Shields are gone and there's damage to the warp core. We also have several casualty reports."

The ship lurched again from the opposite side. The lighting became dim, and more sparks appeared. “That was deck 42." She felt her muzzle rest on a blunted claw and felt sadness mixed with a deep resolve.

"That's it." She pressed something on her chair and heard a chime. "All hands, this is the Admiral. Abandon ship! I repeat, all hands abandon ship!” A new alarm started and she saw the creatures start to flee the room. With a nod to her companions, they both got up and left. Star stood up and looked around with immense sadness running through her. Lost another one. With that, she heard something snap and a white light engulfed her.

She awoke with a start and found herself in a dome of gold magic. Looking beyond it, she saw the place was collapsing. She focused hard, and with a pop, she teleported outside and watched the castle ruins just crumble.

‘That was way too close,’ she thought to herself. 'Where did that shield come from, and where's the artifact?' With a sigh, she started to walk home, declaring this an epic failure. She had just entered the woods again when a pair of figures dropped from the tree tops. They were bipedal ponies with black fur. She had never heard of these ponies before. Both looked at her with angry eyes.

"You should not have come here, pony. That fragment was to be left alone, and now you will die, to be sure no one ever knows of it."

A ball of magic appeared in his hand and he threw it at Star. She suddenly found herself ten feet to the left. She had been thinking of dodging left, but she went farther and faster than she had planned. The bolt hit the ground where she had been a second ago.

"What? How did she get over there so fast!?"

"She's got it. She has the bloody fragment. We have to kill her now, or she'll get them all and bring him back." Several more bolts appeared and Star managed to dodge them. It felt like she was teleporting, but she wasn't focusing on her teleport ability, nor did she feel wind while doing it. She finally stopped and was flanking them. She charged up her own bolt and fired it.

It flew true, and hit the lead pony. It did more than she had expected. Instead of a small burst, it was an explosion, and she heard a brief scream. The other creature raged and continued to chase her. She was running fast, so she couldn't look behind her to fire again.

'If only I could shoot without looking behind,’ Star thought. She let her magical energy charge up into a ball at the end of her horn, and the bolt shot out behind her. Another explosion and a longer scream reached her ears. She slowed down and turned to see half a body fall to the ground. She raced off again, to the edge of the forest. Trees whizzed by faster than she'd ever seen, and she quickly dodged any in her way. To her surprise, she suddenly found herself out of the forest.

Star paused to take a breath. 'Okay, what the hay happened back there?!’ she thought to herself.

Not only had she created a shield while unconscious, but she had dodged magic bolts like they were nothing and easily took out two unknown ponies from a tribe she had never seen before. She had killed them. She had never killed anypony before, but they had been trying to kill her. One of them had said she had a fragment. Was that the orb? She needed help, and she knew one pony who could give it to her. She started walking towards Ponyville and Twilight Sparkle.

Months earlier

In the woods north of Equestria, all was quiet, except for a couple dozen ponies in a nearly abandoned complex making a living. Some miles from them, a patch of forest was a mess, with broken branches everywhere, except around a black shape. The shape almost blended with the night, but its purple mane and tail stood out a bit. Then, suddenly, the mane and tail started flowing even though there was no wind. Then the mane and tail started to look like a starfield with a purple back drop. Eyes opened to reveal turquoise eyes with dragon slits.

Chapter 2 What the Hay happened to me?

Night Hammer paused to take a break from plowing. She looked around the night and noted the emptiness. It had been a few days since the bulk of the Children had decided to follow Luna, believing her to be the Princess of the Night. But Night Hammer and a couple dozen others had stayed, believing Nightmare Moon was the true Princess of the Night, awaiting her return.

But she and the others were growing concerned. It had been days since they had last seen their Princess, and what search parties they had sent out hadn't found a trace of her around. They were all worried that they had made a mistake.

A shuffling sound brought her to attention, and she looked to where it was coming from. At first, she didn't see anything, but then she noticed something tall in the trees.

“Who goes there?” she commanded. The figure stepped out of the trees to reveal Nightmare Moon, battered, bruised, and limping.

“Your highness!” Night Hammer raced over to try and support the large alicorn. “Easy there, come on. I'll get you to the healer.” Nightmare Moon said nothing, and they walked to the compound. Nightmare Moon kept her head down throughout the walk. Several ponies saw them come in and rushed over, cheering. Nightmare Moon looked over them and was saddened.

“Is this all that's left?” she asked. Night Hammer nodded.

“The rest went with Luna to Equestria.” Nightmare Moon looked over the crowd, and a small smile came on her face.

“Thank you all for still trusting me. We have a hard road ahead of us, but we can do it. Return to your chores while I rest. Surviving a blast like that is no small feat, and I need to recover.” They bowed, and went about their chores with renewed vigour. Night Hammer lead the Princess to the healer's alcove. She laid down and let the young unicorn healer look her over.

“Cuts, bruises, strains, and a few magic burns, but not too bad, all things considered. Some ointment and bandages, coupled with rest, and you'll be fine, your Highness. Oh…your hair! It isn't starry anymore.”

“I know. My connection to the moon has been severed, and that is the result. It also means my power is diminished, so we have to act carefully. Especially with so few of us now. At least the enemy that was plaguing us for years is gone.”

“Thanks to you. Rest. I'll bring you some food and drink.” Nightmare Moon nodded and just laid there. Her thoughts were only interrupted by the food.

'Yes,' she thought as she ate. 'Planning will be everything now. But our main enemies believe me dead, and as long as they think that, it will be easy for us to act.’

Months Later

Star was about halfway home when she finally grew tired. She had just traveled three days worth in one day. What the hay had happened to her? Unpacking her kit, she noticed her tent was ripped in several places. Thanking Celestia that she was a unicorn, she used her magic and repaired the damage, then set it up and took out dinner. The apple cider helped calm her.

“What a freaking day. I nearly fall to my death a couple of times, I’m nearly crushed by a collapsing castle, then I’m attacked by strange bipedal ponies and that weird dream.” With a jaw-breaking yawn, Star cleaned up and headed into the tent, hoping for a good deal of rest after such a trying day.

She found herself in a pasture in the middle of a bright, sunny day. There was one oddity, though. A door stood near her and seemed to lead to nowhere. Curious, she approached the doors. They looked like the ones she had previously seen in that weird dream. When she got close, they opened on their own and she stepped inside.

She was in what looked like a comfy office. There was red trimming in the walls. There was a gold couch with a large painting of some strange thing, maybe some kind of ship flying among the stars. She scanned the room until her eyes fell on a creature matching the ones in her dream, looking at her in surprise. She saw it lean over a bit to look behind her, and she followed its gaze, seeing the landscape she had come from on the other side of the door.

“That wasn't there when I came earlier,” the creature, who was apparently a male, said.

“I just went to bed and woke up on that plain and saw the door, so don't look at me.”

“Why not? You're the first sentient pony to walk through those doors, so that is an occasion to remember.” The creature got up and walked to her and she noticed the uniform. It was what she had worn in the dream. Before she could think further on that, he held out a claw. “I think introductions are in order. I'm Paul Rasmussen Q, Marshal Admiral in the United Federation of Planets, and commanding officer of the United Space Ship Firefox.” She raised her hoof and smiled at him.

“The name's Star Wanderer, from the land of Equestria. Adventure is my thing.”

“What kind of adventure?”

“Finding lost magical artifacts.” Q snorted.

“I should have you meet a friend of mine. You two could probably chat for hours. Now then, let's see how you ended up on my ship, and how to get you back.”

Star gave a detailed report of her adventure, and the Admiral's eyes quirked at the dream she mentioned. “Well, that is interesting, and it seems to point to me being you rather then you being here. You experienced a memory of mine that I don't remember, and that would be one that I would remember. Losing a ship is never easy, and never forgotten. You have given me much to think on, young pony.” He got up, started walking, and when he got to the doors, they opened. The scenery outside was not the grassland from before but, the bridge of a starship.

“Miss Wanderer, would you like a tour of this fine ship?”

Star smiled at him. “Might as well, just a new kind of adventure.”

Q chuckled, and they both headed out to the bridge. To say the bridge crew was shocked would be an understatement.

“At ease, Jack. We have a guest on board right now. Everyone, this is Star Wanderer.” Star raised a hoof and said a meek “hi”. A male in a red uniform stammered, “How...why....? Just when I think I have seen everything…” The Admiral put a claw on his shoulder.

“Jack, whenever you are on the Firefox or the Enterprise, never think that. They will throw you a curve just to spite you. You still have the bridge, Jack, while I take our unexpected guest on a tour of the ship.”

Star followed Q to an elevator and began their tour.

He showed her the ship’s power plant, main lounge, school area and Battle Bridge. “Why do you have two bridges?” she asked.

“It's two-fold. One, should the main bridge be destroyed or rendered uninhabitable, this can function in its place. Two, there are times when this ship needs to go into combat. Thus, to protect the civilians on board, we evacuate them onto the saucer and split the ship. During such times, this is the lower section’s bridge.” She was about to comment when the whole ship shook.

“Bridge, what was that?” barked Q.

“Don't know, sir. Our sensors don't show a thing.” Q looked at Star.

“I think I might be waking up,” she said. He nodded.

“Okay, well, I'll take care of this end. You handle yours, and I'll see you when I see you.” The next moment, she was yawning, her tent illuminated by the sun. She yawned and stretched and felt relaxed. It seemed her body had truly rested while she was with the Admiral. Well, it was time to start her day.

After a breakfast and other bodily necessities, she packed up and kept heading for Ponyville at a good clip. A very good clip. She noticed the landscape go by and the constant slight breeze she had. She was not going to complain. The faster she got to Twilight, the quicker she could figure this stuff out. At least it was a nice day.

It was nearly sunset when Star got to Ponyville. 'Amazing,’ she thought. She went right to the castle and knocked on the large doors. A familiar baby dragon opened the door. “Hey Star, Twilight said you went out adventuring. I didn't think I would see you again for a few more days.”

“Something came up. I need to see Twilight. Where is she?”

“I'll give you one guess.” In unison, they both said “The library!” They both chuckled, and Star left Spike and headed to the library.

Twilight had worked hard making her new home comfortable and pleasant, rather than leaving it with the cold sharp look it had had when it formed. She did see an occasional guard too, at both Celestia's and her brother's insistence. Twilight was forced to have a platoon of Royal guards with her now. She had fought hard against it, but had lost, with a concession that they only guard the castle, not her.

Frankly, Star agreed with Celestia and Shining Armor. The castle was not Golden Oaks Library, and was too big for just Twilight and Spike. That, however, did not stop Twilight. She may have been a princess now, but in her mind she was still the town's librarian, and not even Celestia could dissuade her. Among the first things she had done in her new castle was order books to replace those lost in Golden Oaks and set up a new library in the castle. The highest number of guards was around during the library’s open hours to keep the public out of the castle’s private areas. But the Library was closed to the public at this hour, so the guard did a patrol of the castle. Star was able to open the doors to the library and look in.

The one thing this place had over old Golden Oaks was room. Star thought Twilight was trying to rival the Royal Library, and that was probably a good idea. If a disaster befell one, the other could be safe. She found her friend immersed in a book. Star also guessed she had had to do some royal duty beforehand, for Twilight was wearing her crown. Knowing her friend, she had probably forgotten about it. That was the downside of the non-Elemental crown. Twilight had less incentive to keep track of it than its predecessor, which had the Element of Magic imbedded in it.

Twilight was so engrossed in her reading, it was just too perfect to pass up. Star sneaked towards the purple alicorn.

Twilight was deep in study on a magic theory when someone yelled in her ear.

“HEY! SPARKS!”

“EEEEEEEAAAAAAAAA!” The next thing she knew, she was halfway to the ceiling and she heard loud laughter, a familiar laughter. Looking down, she saw her unicorn friend hugging her sides, still laughing hard.

“Star Wanderer, you are so going to get it when you least expect it!” The unicorn just brushed it off.

“Nah, you’ll forget in a week.”

“You just keep thinking that. So, that was a short trip for you. Was it a bust?”

“Not quite. I've got a doozy of a story to tell you.” Star went on about what had happened at the castle ruins and during her trip back. Twilight listened intently, tapping a hoof to her muzzle throughout it all as she absorbed what her friend said.

“So…you now have a being, or maybe a part of a being, in you, that you can only talk to while sleeping. And when you do, your abilities increase. Time for the lab.” Star had just enough time to shake her head before she was pulled behind the alicorn.

“Spike! Send a message to Princess Luna. I need her here as soon as possible!”

“Got it!” Star saw a flare of green behind her as she was led down to Twilight's new lab.

After the library, the lab was the second most completed section of the castle. Very little of Twilight's original lab was salvageable, but being Celestia's former student and an Equestrian princess, she managed to replace the equipment quickly. In no time, Star found herself strapped to a series of devices.

“Okay, Star. Lift those weights and move them around.” Star nodded and focused her magic. A gold glow appeared on her horn, then around the spheres, and they were lifted to various heights. She flew them around at various speeds before forming them in that weird star delta that the admiral wore. “Okay, that's enough.” Star put them back.

“So what did you find?” Star asked. Twilight looked at the graph.

“Well, your magical aura is different than the last time I measured it. It’s a tad stronger, but what's really interesting is the brain scans.” Twilight pointed to the readings. “It's faint, but noticeable. You have two brain patterns in your head.” Star just stared in stunned shock at the implications.

“Star? Star, you okay? I know it's a lot to take in.” Star looked to her friend in shock.

“A lot to take in? Twi, I have a bucking creature living in my head, doing Celestia-knows-what to my body!” Star felt a hoof on her shoulder.

“Hey, it will be okay. From the sounds of it, this Admiral seems like a nice guy, and he wants answers as much as you do.”

“How do you know, Twi? He may not mean to, but he could change who I am. No one can understand what this is like.”

“I wouldn't be so sure of that, young unicorn.” Both Twilight and Star looked over to see Princess Luna and a black unicorn looking a bit winded.

“Princess Luna! You got here fast. Thank you,” Twilight said.

“When a fellow Princess, especially one I owe so much, says to hurry, of course I come quickly. Plus, it was a good test on Nightshadow's teleporting abilities.”

“Gee, thanks!” the unicorn groaned, causing Luna to grin. Twilight was happy for the Night Princess. Taking Nightshadow as a student had done well for her. She was even more expressive and mischievous than before. She had become much like her older sister. She approached Star.

“Twilight Sparkle has spoken well of you, Star Wanderer, and I am charmed to meet you. Now, shall we meet this guest of yours?”

Chapter 3: A New Quest

View Online

Star looked around her dreamscape, it was still the same grassy plains she had gotten used to over these past few days. Her actual body was with the others in a room in Twi's castle. She waited patiently for the others to appear.

“Everypony okay?” She asked. Everyone nodded

“So where is your guest?”, Twilight asked.

“Behind that door.” Star said, gesturing to the door behind her.

The others look at the door in the middle of nowhere and seemed to lead to nowhere. Star walked up to the door and opened it to reveal a new room. It was a long and narrow room with a long table with several chairs. The chair nearest to them had an occupant. Star recognized the admiral as he sat there looking out the windows on one side of the room.

“Hey Admiral.”

He looked over and his eyes brighten a bit.

“Star! Good to see you. I see you brought guests.”

Introductions were made and Star gave a summary of what they found on her side. He thought in silence going over what he just heard before responding.

“Well you have been more fruitful that I have. I have been able to figure out that I'm only a fragment of my full being. My existence is limited to my time on this vessel. But what you told me has helped. I think I know a bit of what's going on. Somehow I got separated and those fragments ended up on your world. They fact that someone tried to kill Star shows that my being in this world is no accident. Someone wanted me here and out of the way. As I currently am, I can't leave you so we are left with two options. One you help find my other parts and with my powers restored I can separate myself from you and you can go on with your life and I can return to mine. Two you do nothing to help and you are stuck with this part of me in you for the rest of your life. I think the choice is obvious.”

Star looked to her friends and asked what they thought.

“Well I have never heard or read of something like this before. Not that I wouldn't be willing to find some spell but it could take years if I even find out Star. Luna you have any ideas?”

“I have not heard of such a thing in all my years, but the preferred solution is sound. I sense no lies from this creature and as someone who has had two persona's in her life, living as such is not pleasant so I go for getting the Admiral out of you.”

“Nothing within the Children's Archives covers this so I can't directly help you either, sorry.” Star looked at the floor for a minute before looking up with a determined look on her face. She looked over to the Admiral.

“I'm gonna find your other fragments and get you whole again. It's best for me and you and I don't want you in my head for the rest of my life, no offense.”

“None taken, and I promise to do everything within my power to aid and assist you when I can.”

“And I'll have Nightshadow join you in this quest.” Nightshadow looked at her princess in shock.

“But what about my kids?”

“They will be looked after by their Aunt Luna of course.” Luna gave out a small grin before growing serious again. “Being my student is not meant to be always easy Nightshadow. Whiles things can be taught many lessons can only be learn by experience. And that means going out of your comfort zone. Twilight did so when she went to Ponyville and now she is a Princess.”

“Yup, going to Ponyville was the best thing to happen in my life. I wouldn't have the dear friends I have now much less being an alicorn.”

“And I would still be the original Nightmare Moon and either banished again or destroying the world in Eternal Night. Instead I have redeemed myself, reconnected with my sister, and new friends, and been reunited with my adopted children.”

“Face it Nightshadow, you don't really have a choice here. Besides, think of the experience you have and with young ones waiting, you have an incentive to return.” The unicorn held her head in resignation and before anyone could talk further they hear a chime.

<Admiral we are approaching Starbase 216.> A voice said from an unseen speaker. The Admiral got up and went to the windows.

“Ladies, please join me by the window.” Seeing no reason not too the group head over to the curved windows. There the girls saw come into view and brilliant red orb that bathed them all in a red light. Twilight was the first to break the silence.

“Is that a..”

“A star? Yes, beautiful isn't it?” All four did nod. Their eyes widened as they suddenly saw an object appear. Silhouetted by the star, the girls made out it's features. It had a bulbous head with a rectangular....doorway? From the bulb it came down to a flat area with many windows that were lit.

“What is that?” Nightshadow asked the admiral, who just grinned back.

“That is Starbase 216. My Firefox coming to bring them new equipment and get some R&R.” They all saw the metaphorical light bulb go off on the Admiral's face. “Say, you want to see my ship from the outside?”

“How?” All four ask cautiously. He smiled with a grin that, to Twilight, seemed a little too much like Discord. Then he lifted his hand and snapped his fingers and they all were engulf in a flash. Twilight was horrified for a moment.

When the white disappeared Star saw a star full night and a slight sheen in front of her. Star looked around and felt something beneath her hooves. When she stepped she heard a metallic sound.

“Where are we?” Star asked.

“Just outside the Starbase. We are standing on it's hull, but look over there.” He pointed to their upper right and Star look and saw a what she guessed was his ship. Half of it looked like a giant plate, she couldn't tell the color of the hull thanks to the star's light. From the plate she saw a curving neck attach to the bulbous second half. That had had a weird red and blue circles painting that glowed. From the second half she saw two stubby wings that curved up into two long pill like objects. From this angle the ship looked majestic floating among the stars like she had seen Princess Luna a couple times in the night. All of the ponies made complementary comments of the ship and stared at her for a few minutes as she came in close.

“Well, you should all get going. You have a big day tomorrow and I wish you the greatest success. Have a good night.” It was then the girls saw a door appear and open back to that grassy plain.

“A pleasure meeting you Admiral Q.” Luna said to which the Admiral gave a slight bow.

“A similar pleasure. Hopefully we can meet outside of Star's mind. I don't think she'd wanted us going through her most embarrassing moments.”

“YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!” Star screamed causing smiles all around before the girls step through. The next thing they were waking up again where fallen asleep in for that meeting.

“Well let's see where Star and Nightshadow are heading to first.” Twilight stated and led the others to a map room she had put in. “Okay Star find the nearest fragment.” Star closed her eyes and tried to access the admiral's unique magic for guidance. IT was an amazing feeling, raw power and wild, but inherent goodness as well.

'Okay, now where is you next piece?' she mentally asked. With her eyes still closed she points to where she feels where it is then opens her eyes. Her hoof was on top of a mountain.

“Canterlot?” She asked in surprise. Twilight takes a closer look and shakes her head.

“No, if the fragment is the same as the one in you it would be noticed unless Celestia has it hidden somewhere. Luna can ask her, but Star's hoof isn't on Canterlot itself but on Mount Canterhorn. I bet it's within the mountain more than the city. Let's get some rest tonight and I'll arrange for a pair of train tickets to Canterlot for you two tomorrow." They nodded their heads and, after a late night dinner all turned in, save for Luna who headed back to Canterlot.

The next day after a breakfast Twilight saw them to the train station and wished them luck on their quest. Star knew that the young princess wanted to go with but her new duties prevented her. Twilight may have accepted that fact she's a princess now, but that doesn't mean she likes all that goes with it.

Four hours later, the two unicorns got off the train and walked to the castle while having a short conversation and getting to know each other till they reach the gates. In minutes they met Celestia who said there is nothing in the Archives like the orb Star described to Twilight and Luna last night, so that left the caves in Canterhorn. Celestia led them to the entrance that Twilight and Cadance used to escape the caves three years ago. Star and Nightshadow saw some equipment laying by the entrance.

“I had my servants pick up some climbing equipment for you since I don't know much about these old mines. I wish you Luck and safety my little ponies.” With a nod from both of them the Princess of the Sun returned to her royal duties and the two unicorn's looked over and divided the equipment between them before heading in. Soon they had to emit light from their horns as the explored the cavern. Nightshadow followed Star's lead since Star was the one who could truly sense the fragment. The unicorn in question was using her innate ability to seek out magical artifacts and that sense she now has from the Admiral now in her. But the quiet was still too much for Star so she decided to get to know her companion better.

“So you have kids?” She heard Nightshadow chuckle.

“You could say that, they were orphaned in our war with the darkness. I ended up caring for them. I am now their legal guardian and I consider them my little sisters and they made me their big sister. Then of course Princess Luna became their aunt.”

“I'm not surprised by that.” Star chuckled before continuing. “After her first Nightmare Night back she adored children. In honesty they were the first to accept her back. I was one of two not scared of her when she arrived, alog with Twilight. I thought her entrance was awesome, especially with that bat cloak thing. I pitied Twilight trying to get the town to warm up to her, especially when Pinkie had the WORST timing possible during all of that. So what are their names?”

“Eclipse a pegasus filly and Twilight Moon and unicorn filly.”

“A unicorn name Twilight?”

“Yes the irony was not lost on me.” Nightshadow said with a smirk. The approach a ledge and see the other side 20 hooves lower then them. Star made the leap with ease and landed solidly on the rock and looked back at her companion with a smirk. Nightshadow backed up a bit and Star heard the sound of her partner galloping, but just as Nightshadow was about to leap a piece of the ledge gave away. She was starting to scream when she notice she wasn't falling. She was surrounded by a light green field.

“Don't worry I got you.” Star brought Nightshadow to her own ledge. The dark unicorn took a minute to catch her breath.

“Th-thanks.....for the......grab.” Nightshadow managed to get out between breaths.

“No problem, such adventures are dangerous. I nearly died three times when I got my new guest.” Star's face became serious. “This way.” She started walking with a more cautious Nightshadow following.

Minutes later Star saw the tell tale light patterns she had seen from the other fragment. At least this time the area where it was located was far more stable than the one at the castle. There in the center of the room was the same style pulsing orb she saw before. The orb felt somehow welcoming to her, like it knew she had another piece of it. Nightshadow walked next to her with her eyes closed and a slight smile on her lips.

“I may love the night but this feels so nice and warm.” Star nodded but before they could say further they heard something behind them. They turned around and Star saw two more of those biped equines. Frowning, Star quickly ran towards the orb and held her horn against it.
