This is my first fanfiction of anything. This is also my first publicly available story. Any criticism or pointers are much appreciated. I tried to keep the chapters short and sweet. Partly because I'd get bored half way through but also makes the slightly easier to pick up where you left off. That said, don't take this story too seriously, because I certainly didn't.

Chapter I: Not A Morning Mare

View Online

Her alarm rang out loudly, rudely waking her from her peaceful slumber. She smacked her hoof straight down on the top of the clock. The clock kept ringing. She punched the clock and it flew across the room and into the far wall. The clock stopped ringing. She rose up and threw the covers back. She yawned, stretched, and lay down again. Opening one eye and looking at the clock on the floor; 6:30am, she groaned and closed her eyes again for five minutes. She opened them again and the clock read; 7:15am. She bolted out of bed and galloped to her wardrobe. She hastily tied her red bow into her mane and put on her red bands onto her legs. She galloped down the stairs and into the kitchen. 7:20 Am. She hesitated at the decision of making breakfast.

“Ah screw it, I don’t have time.” She said to herself.

She grabbed her bag and bolted out of the door, locking it behind her. Flapping her wings furiously.
Beany Bun was a simple mare with simple dreams, and enjoyed the simple things in life. Unlike some pony’s, she didn’t dream of big adventure and handsome colts and high society dinners. She was content with a simple sandwich and a little music.
She was a pale yellow, with dark brown hair. Her mane and tale had light brown highlights in them. She had reasonably underdeveloped wings, as she only flew when she was scared, or late for work. She always wore a bright red bow in her mane, and often wore bright red hoof bands. She had freckles on her cheeks. Her eyes were an ocean blue. She didn’t have a cutie mark, and she often got laughed at for it. She was a sort of black sheep amongst her friends, as she was the only one in town without a cutie mark, besides the younger fillies of course.

She flew to work. She made it just in time, crashing through the shop door and doing several rolls into the counter.

“Damn it Beany Bun, not again. If you keep crashing through the doors like that, we’re not going to have a shop left.” Scolded a light blue stallion behind the counter.

“Sorry sir. I guess I woke up a little late… again.” Beany replied.

“You do this every morning.” The stallion was obviously holding something back, and was avoiding eye contact all together.

“ummm… sir?” Beany nervously stammered.

“We have to talk Beany…”

Beany’s heart sank. She knew what was about to happen.

“You’re late most mornings and when you’re on time, you break something crashing through the door. The fact is, you’re more trouble than you’re worth.”

Tears filled Beany’s eyes.

“I’m going to have to let you go Beany Bun.” The boss said quietly. “It’s a decision I’ve been thinking about for a while now. Business isn’t great as it is and you’re not helping matters. I’m sorry Beany, but…”

Before the stallion could finish, Beany had ran out of the café and out into the street crying. She could barely see where she was going due to the tears. She galloped to the edge of town and sat by the river staring at her reflection.

“Where did I go wrong? Better yet, what am I going to do now?” Beany asked herself.

She closed her eyes and lay back, staring at the sky. Thoughts rushing through her head.
The gentle gurgle of the water against the rocks on the south bank. The occasional quack of a duck downstream. The silent flutter of a butterfly frolicking past her nose. It was so peaceful. The cacophony of bird song in the tree’s just to the south. He could easily fall asleep right now.

Chapter II: A New Arrival

Beany must have been lying there for a good hour or so, just thinking. She opened her eyes, and a pale yellow colt stood over her with a sweet smile.

“Hello there. Are you okay?” The colt asked.

Beany quickly stood up, her face blushing. “Oh… yes… I was just… err…”
“Let me guess, checking your eyelids for holes?” Asked the colt in a joking way.
Beany laughed. “Can I… erm… y’know… help you?” Beany stammered
“Why yes. I’m new around these parts; I was hoping to get a quick tour.” The colt replied with a sweet smile.
“Oh *ahem* of course… well, the town you’re in is called Apples Bramley. We’re all simple folk. We’re not quite Manehattan but we get by. Where are you from?”
“Nowhere in particular. Tell me, is there anywhere to eat? I’m famished.” Asked the colt.
“Yes there’s a…” Beany stopped mid-sentence. She wasn’t about to send business to the people who fired her. “You could come to my house? I haven’t eaten yet… so… y’know.”
“That sounds lovely.” The colt said in a soft voice.
The two walked into town again. They talked, getting to know each other.
“I didn’t catch your name?” Said the colt.
“Oh… Beany Bun. My names Beany Bun.”
“Pleasure is mine. I’m Miles. Miles McBridle.” He turned to look at her cutie mark, noticing that there wasn’t one. “Your cutie mark? You…”
“I don’t have one.” Beany said shamefully, lowering her head.

Miles put his hoof on Beany’s chin and lifts it up. “Never be ashamed of not having a cutie mark. For now, the world is your oyster. You can be anything you want to be. Dream big Beany.” Miles smiled.

Beany turned to look at Miles cutie mark. It was covered by a large brown cloak, and a jumpsuit under that. The two continued walking towards Beany’s house. They finally arrived, and Beany opened the door, letting the two in. She threw her bag onto her couch and began making some food in the kitchen. Miles placed his bag by the door, and sat on a kitchen stool. He removed his cloak, but left his jumpsuit on. Beany finished the food and placed a plate with a sandwich on it, in front of Miles and another one opposite.

Chapter III: Good Things Never Last

The two sat there and ate their food, talking, laughing and getting to know each other. When they had finished, Beany took the plates and placed them in the sink. As she turned around to look at Miles, he was putting his cloak back on. His horn glowed a strange shade of red and his bags flew through the air and were placed in his back.

“My gratitude unto you Beany Bun. Now, if you would be so kind, could you direct me to the nearest store? I need supplies before I move on.” Miles asked rather politely.

“Of course. Let’s go”

The two exit the house and head back into town. As they walk down the main street, many ponies stop and stare at this new unicorn among them. Whispers circulate the groups of ponies around, and Beany droops her head a little.

They arrive at a quaint little store on the edge of town, and enter. Miles moves straight to the food shelves and picks up what he can. He pays for it without a word and then leaves. As they leave, Beany turns right to head back into town. Miles turns left. Beany notices and catches up with him.

“Towns back the other way.” She stated with a puzzling tone.

“I know, but I have to leave. I’m on my way to Canterlot you see, and can’t afford delay. My next stop is Dodge Junction, then I believe Ponyville, and finally onto Canterlot.”

“Oh. Okay… well… I… well… *ahem*well… goodbye I guess.”

“Goodbye Beany Bun. You’re something special, and I feel that we’ll see each other again.”

Miles hugs Beany, and kisses her cheek. Beany’s cheeks flush pure red and she giggles. Miles smiles and walks off down the road.

For the rest of the day, she couldn’t forget about the unicorn that made a bad day seem like no big deal.

Chapter IV: Some Things are Best Left Alone... But Not This

View Online

Beany awoke the next morning with a start. She was sweating and shaking.
“wow… what a dream.”

She slowly got up and headed down the stairs. She made herself some breakfast and sat at the table. She ate it slowly, wondering what to do. She couldn’t get Miles out of her head. He was driving her crazy. She wandered around the town with a dreamy look in her eye. Ponies tried to talk to her but she just wandered around, daydreaming. Beany went and lay on the grass by the river, like she had before. She closed her eyes and dreamt of Miles.

She awoke several hours later. The sun was setting and she was startled at the time. She rushed home.
For the evening she pondered on whether to follow him. She went to bed, and dreamt of the colt once again.
When she awoke early next morning, she decided that she was going to go to him. He mentioned Dodge Junction before, so that’s where she’d go.

She packed a bag with some food, water, a book and some money. She tied her bow into her mane, put on her bands. She was ready to go. Then the thought hit her; What if she never found him again? She shook the thought off, and set out.
As she walked through the town, she took one last look at the place she called home. She approached the edge of town, and hesitated. She had never left Apples Bramley before, so this would be the start of an adventure, she wasn’t sure she could come back from. Finally, she plucked up the courage, and marched forward, into the unknown.

An hour into her journey, and she wasn’t entirely sure which way she was going. Luckily, she came across a signpost, marking Dodge Junction about a mile North West. She pushed forward. Along the way, she was met by a group of Highway Mares. They tried to take her down, but Beany fought back. Bucking one of them straight in the face and knocking a number of the mare’s teeth out, before taking to the skies and flying straight for Dodge Junction. She could see it, just on the horizon and flew fast and hard.
By the time she arrived, she was worn out. She landed in the middle of town panting heavily. A white colt noticed her and asked if she was okay. Panting heavily, Beany replied; “Yes… I’m… Okay… I… Just… Need… To… Rest… For… A… Minute…”

The colt, a white unicorn with black and dark purple hair and green sunglasses, helped her into his house. She sat on his couch and he gave her a drink of water.

“What exactly happened?” asked the colt

“I’m travelling up to Canterlot from Apples Bramley. I had to pass through the badlands on the way and I came across some highway mares. I took a couple down and flew away. I’m not used to flying so far, so fast. It’s worn me out.” Beany replied in between gulps of water.

Chapter V: Drop It..!

After a few minutes, Beany had finally got her breath back. The colt had gone to the kitchen to fix up some food. She followed him in and the two began to converse.

“I’m sorry about all this, I realise you probably have better things to do than make food for me.” Beany said to the colt.

“It’s fine. I don’t mind. I’d only be practising with my band anyway. I’m awesome enough so… y’know.”

“I’m Beany by the way. Beany Bun. I’m from Apples Bramley just south of the badlands.”

“Pleasure Ms Beany. I’m Bass. Bass Blazer. I’m a bass player for a band here in Dodge.”

“Wow. I bet that’s fun.”

“Damn right it is. I drop that bass harder than any pony I know of, and if I haven’t heard of them, then they’re obviously not that good.”

Bass puts a plate in front of Beany and she tucks in to a rather appetizing sandwich. Upon finishing the sandwich, Beany looks around and notices several awards and trophies on shelves. Upon further inspection of the room, she notices a couple of bass guitars in the corner. One is a deep blue colour with white trims and neon green strings. The other was different. It seemed to glow slightly. It had an arcane design on its body and was a deep red and orange iridescent colour. The strings seemed to glow as well. They were a neon blue colour. The first one was cool, but the second one was downright awesome looking.

“That’s a pretty cool bass right there. Where’d you get it? It seems… strange.” Beany said inquisitively.

“Oh that? I got that a couple days ago from a unicorn that passed this way. I found him unconscious just outside of town. He’d been robbed, so I carried him to the doctors just down the road. He gave me that as a thank you. It’s pretty awesome.”

“Was the unicorn a very pale yellow with dark blue hair with light blue highlights? Green eyes? Brown clothes?”

“Yes. Do you know him?”

“You could say that. Where can I find the doctor?”

“Down the road. Past the general store. I can take you there if you want.”

“Yes please. I need to find that unicorn.”

“Well, okay then. Come on. Times a’ wasting”

Bass and Beany leave the house and walk down the street. The two talk a little. They reach the general store and Bass goes inside. A minute later he comes back out with two cupcakes. He gives one to Beany. She eats it with great gusto, and licks her lips. The two continue on and reach the doctors house. Bass knocks on the door, and an elderly colt opens the door.

“Doctor… oh… it’s you Bass. Another stray?”

“Not exactly sir. This mare is looking for the unicorn you patched up yesterday.”

“Of course. Odd fellow, he was. Strange cutie mark I recall. He seemed like he was trying to hide it for some reason.”

“What was it?” Beany asks innocently

“It was… well you see it was… I can’t remember. How odd.” Replied the doctor.

“Well, it’s not that important anyway. Where did he go? Is he still in town?” Beany asked impatiently.

“No, he left last night. Said he was heading to Canterlot. That means he would be headed for Ponyville.” Said the doctor.

“Then that’s where I’m headed. Thank you for your help.”

“Wait, you can’t leave now. It’s getting late. You can’t travel at night.” Bass exclaimed.

“I’m already a day behind him, I need to move to make up for lost time.”

Bass bites his lip and looks worried.
“Wait here for a second. I’ll be back.”

Bass gallops off back to his house. Five minutes later, he returns with saddlebags and the red bass guitar strapped to his back.

“I’m coming with you.” Bass said.

“But what about your band?” Beany asked.

“Don’t worry about them.” Bass retorted. “They’ll survive without me. I can’t let you travel alone. Anyway, if you want to catch up to
him, then you’ll need to head through the Everfree Forest, and I wouldn’t let anypony travel through there alone.”

“Well… who am I to argue? Just… keep up.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll stay with you.” Bass said confidently.

“Well then, let’s move. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover.” Beany said as she walks towards the dark and gloomy Everfree Forest.

Chapter VI: It's Dangerous To Go Alone. Take This... Bass Guitar

View Online

The Everfree Forest was dark and scary. Strange noises echoed around the two ponies and they both stayed close to one another. A low mist covered the ground around them and they walked cautiously, to avoid injuring themselves. The shadows of the trees were menacing, and rustles could be heard from the bushes all around them.

After what seemed like an eternity of traipsing through endless forest, they came to a deep chasm. Looking up, they saw the ruins of the old Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters. The two stared in awe at the ruins of this magnificent castle.

“I’d heard legends of this place, but I didn’t know it actually existed.” Said Bass quietly “It’s supposedly where Celestia banished Luna from.”

“It’s… smaller than I would have expected.” Beany stated.

“True. Wait! Did you see that?” Bass said urgently.

“What?”

“A light… Over there… in the mist. Look!”

Beany strained her eyes staring into the mist, and sure enough, there was a light flickering in the distance.

“Yes. I see it. It looks like a fire. How are we going to get there? We have to pass through this chasm.”

“Or we could… y’know… go around.” Bass was pointing at a wide ridge that bordered the castle’s chasm.

“Right. That would probably be safer.” Beany said, moving towards the ridge. “Let’s go.”

The sun is just peaking over the horizon as the duo reaches the source of the light. The mist has mostly cleared, and reveals that some pony was camped here the night before. The light was from a fire. All that remained was a pile of charred black logs, and hoof prints leading north. Beany looked at Bass with tired eyes. We’re close. This fire can’t be more than an hour or two old.

Bass looked back at Beany. “Beany… we need to sleep. Even if it’s just for an hour. We can’t keep going until we’ve slept a little.”

Beany yawned and nodded.

The two re-lit the fire and huddled beside it. They soon fell asleep.

Chapter VII: The Game Is Afoot

The duo emerges from the Everfree Forest, into a quaint little town by the name of Ponyville. They wander into the middle of town, to be met by ponies going about their daily business. Beany looks up, to see a light blue Pegasus pony with a rainbow mane and tail, clearing the skies. Bass begins to wander off towards a white mare with eon blue hair and magenta goggles.

“Meet me by the town hall in an hour!” Beany shouted to Bass.

Bass shook his hoof in affirmation.

Beany gets the attention of this Pegasus.

“Hello. I’m Beany. I’m guessing you see a lot of ponies pass through here, well, have you seen a very pale yellow unicorn pass
through here today? Blue hair? Brown clothing?” Beany asks desperately.

“Sure I have. I’m Rainbow Dash by the way. The colt you’re looking for is at the station. He’s on his way to Canterlot.”

“That’s the one. Thanks for your help!” Beany shouted as she ran towards Bass.

“No problem!” Rainbow Dash shouted back. She continued with her sky clearing without a second thought.

Beany runs up to Bass. “We have to go. NOW!”

“But I… GURKGH!!” Bass is interrupted by Beany grabbing the collar of Bass’ jacket and pulling him away. The two gallop towards
the station.

“So who was she?” Beany asked.

“Her name was Vinyl Scratch, she’s a DJ.” Bass said dreamily.

“Right. I’m guessing she still isn’t as awesome as you?”

Bass shook his head “Of course not. No pony is as awesome as me!”

At that point, Rainbow Dash lands in front of Bass and glares at him

“Is that so?” Dash said slowly.

Beany continued running, shouting back to Bass; “Meet me at the station Bass!”

Bass peeked around the side of Dash nervously and replied “Okay…”

Beany galloped onto the station platform and looked up and down. At the far end, she saw Miles buying a ticket from the kiosk.

Beany bolted for him. She tripped on a bag and rolled straight into Miles. Miles stands up and shakes his head. He looks over to the pony that crashed into him.

“What is wrong with you? Are you blind?” Miles asked angrily. When he focused on the mare, his eyes widened. “Beany? What are you doing here?”

Miles helps Beany to her feet and looks at her.

“I came here to look for you. I… I want to come with you” Beany says, smiling sweetly.

“You can’t. What I must do is too dangerous for you to come with me. I’m sorry.” Miles said.

Beany’s head dropped and a tear rolled down her cheek. Miles looks at her with soft, caring eyes.

“Please let me come with you. I won’t get in the way. I can be helpful. I’ll stay out of the way when you need me to.” Beany said, desperately trying to get Miles to reconsider. She looked at him with her big eyes.

“Well… you… I… I can’t… *sigh* fine. Let’s go.”

Beany’s face lit up. She hugged Miles with a beaming smile on her face.

“oooohh thank you thank you thank you thank you.” Beany said excitedly.

“Okay… calm down there Beany.”

“Oh. Sorry. I have a friend who might want to come with us. Is… that okay?” Beany asked reluctantly.

“Well… I guess. Who is it?” Miles asks.

“Bass Blazer. He’s from Dodge Junction.”

“I know him. And yes. He can come. Now, you’re going to need tickets.”

Chapter VIII: The 12:50 from Ponyville

View Online

Four ponies sat in the train car as it thundered towards Canterlot. Bass and Beany explained how they had come to find Miles.

Rainbow Dash had decided to join them after Bass had told her that they were headed to Canterlot. She thought it would be a good chance to see Twilight and her friends.

“So, exactly what are you going to Canterlot for?” Asked Dash.

“My… uhh… some old friends of mine are in trouble. I’m going to go and help them.” Miles replied.

“Who are they?” Beany asked.

“Well, they’re the princesses. I have reason to believe they’re in danger.”

Beany and Bass’ eyes widen.
“You’re friends with Celestia? Luna? Cadence? Twilight Sparkle?” they both exclaim in shock.

“Well, Celestia and Luna yes. I don’t know who the other two are.”

“Have you been living under a rock?” Beany said.

Dash looked at the two ponies. “I’m one of Twilights best friends, thank you.” She exclaimed.

Still in shock, the two ponies don’t hear her.

“I’ve not been in Equestria since… well… for a long time. Anyway, we’re getting close to Canterlot.”

They approached the station and came to a slow halt. They all disembarked and headed into the city streets. They looked out of place in this high society city, filled with pompous ponies and shining buildings. Many of the ponies turned up their noses at these common ponies amongst the elite. Miles didn’t seem too bothered by it, and knew exactly where he was going. Beany and Bass kept their heads down and followed Miles closely.

As they were approaching the palace, they passed a small club. The trio stopped due to a commotion inside. Loud melodic thuds could be heard, then the sound of breaking glass. Suddenly, the door swung open and a unicorn mare came flying out. She landed in the gutter. She turned and shouted something at the ponies in the club. The trio approach her and ask if she’s okay.

“My backend hurts a little, and my pride, but nothing serious.” The mare replied.

“I’m Miles, this is Bass, Dash and Beany. What happened in there?” Miles asks politely.

“I’m Starlight Reverb. I’m a DJ, or I was at that club there. Anyway, there may have been too much bass. Some glasses got broken.

No one can really say who it was, but it may have been me.”
Bass’ eyes glaze over and he gazes into Starlight’s eyes. Starlight looks back into his eyes and the two begin talking.

“Well, we’re not going to get their attention for a while.” Miles said mockingly. “Come on, we’ve got to get to the palace.”
Starlight hears this and gets slightly excited. “Ooooooooooohhh the palace? You must be important. Are you going for a tour or something?”

“No. I need to speak with the princesses.” Replied Miles.

“Ah. You might have a problem with that. They’re not there. They’re in the Crystal Empire for a princess summit.”

“How do you know that?” Miles asked.

“I’m a DJ. I hear things. One of the royal guards was in the club. He was talking to someone about it.” Starlight replied.

A look of sheer horror descends on Miles’ face. “We have to get there by tonight.”

“There’s a train leaving at about 4pm. Takes about 3 hours to get there.” Dash said.

“That’ll be too late.” Miles pondered something for a minute. “I have an idea, but it means leaving you all here. This could get a lot more dangerous than I initially planned. You’ll see me again soon. I promise.”

Miles’ horn glowed red and a blinding light shone from it. Beany began to tear up again. Just as Miles was nearly invisible from the light, Beany bolted forward and grabbed hold of him. Dash grabbed her tail to pull her back. Bass grabbed Dash’s tail and then Starlight grabbed Bass’. A flash lit up the street. The four ponies closed their eyes, and screamed.

Chapter IX: Sparkly...

View Online

The four ponies opened their eyes, and they were all lying on the floor. They sat up and scratched their heads.

“What the…? Where are we?” asked Bass.

“The Crystal Empire. We travelled miles in a few seconds. How? I didn’t think anyone could teleport that far.” Dash exclaimed in shock.

Miles was agitated. “We have to go. NOW!” He got up and galloped towards the Crystal Palace. The other four jumped up and followed him. They gallop down the main road towards the palace. They finally reach the palace. Miles runs up to the main doors. He is immediately stopped by the guards.

“HALT! You cannot pass. The princesses are in a summit and cannot be disturbed. No visitors.” The guards chant.

“The princesses are in danger. You have to let me in.” Miles says desperately.

“Likely story. Get out of here.” The guards says in a monotonic voice. Miles retreats back to the group, knowing that trying to convince them would be pointless. They have their orders.

“Okay, I can teleport to the throne room. That’s where I need to be. Dash, find your friends. They have access to the palace, meaning they can help Twilight. Bass, Starlight, I want you two to guard the throne room doors. Inform me the second that someone tries to get in. Beany… you’re with me. Just stay out of the way and say nothing. You all ready?”
Everybody nods.

“Right.” Miles’ horn glows red and a light shines around Bass and Starlight. The two disappear with a flash of light. Dash fly’s around the palace and disappears inside. Miles looks at Beany.

“Hold on.” He puts his hoof onto her back. His horn glows and suddenly they’re in the throne room.
Miles gets his bearings quickly.

“Princesses! You are in grave danger. We…” Miles stops mid-sentence. The royal guards are bound and gagged in the corner of the room. As he looks to either side of the room, there are large black cages. In each of them is one of the four princesses. Miles gasped.

He looks to the throne and a large, pure black mare, about the same size as Cadence, walks out from behind the throne.

Her eyes are pure red, with only a slight black slit as a pupil. Her teeth were sharp and scary looking. Her mane flowed and licked like fire, and was a pure burning orange colour. Her upper legs had grey rings around them, with black gems encrusted into them. She had a long horn that curved slightly. She had large wings, but they weren’t like Pegasus wings, or Alicorn wings. They were cartilage and skin, like a dragons wings. Her mark, was the Alicorn amulet held within a shield, almost like a coat of arms.
Miles gasped again. The mare laughs, evilly, in a harsh, but soft voice.

Chapter X: The Masks We Wear

“Oh dear little colt, it appears you are too late to save your pathetic princesses.”

“How did you return?” Miles demanded to know.

Celestia shouts at Miles; “Stay away from her young colt”

Miles ignored her completely.

Beany slowly backed up to the doors at the opposite side of the throne room. She huddled in the corner and tried to hide amongst the guards.

“I’m the most powerful Alicorn alive. It wasn’t that difficult.” The mare retorted.

“I beg to differ. You’re not even a real Alicorn.” Miles stated spitefully.

“You insolent little foal. HOW DARE YOU!” The mare fires a pure red beam from her horn and it hits Miles, exploding around him. The mare cackles.

“I am Dark Shield! I AM THE RULER OF THE WORLD! Mwuhahaha”

She was too busy laughing to notice that Miles is just standing there, unimpressed. He pulled off his cloak and jumpsuit, revealing his cutie mark. Celestia and Luna gasped when his cutie mark was revealed.

Dark Shield continues laughing hysterically. Miles horn glows a strange shade of red, and a black cloud begins to surround him. He is blocked completely from view.

Dark Shield noticed the cloud and stopped laughing. Celestia and Luna seemed to be rather calm while Cadence and Twilight were in shock.

A flash of light shines from the cloud and suddenly; glowing green eyes can be seen through the smoke. A red beam of energy shoots out of the cloud and heads straight for Dark Shield. She doesn’t react, thinking it to be the petty magic of a little unicorn. The beam hits her, and she flies backwards, crashing into the throne.

She lands upside down on the throne, her eyes spinning. Every pony in the room is shocked, still, except for Celestia and Luna who now seem rather calm. They all look back to the smoke cloud. It begins to thin and a large maroon Alicorn stands there. His eyes glowing green. He has golden bands around his legs, encrusted with deep red jewels. His wings had black armour plating on the stalks. His mane and tail were black with deep blue highlights. His horn was tall. He himself was as tall as Celestia, if not a little taller. He stood proud, like royalty. The smoke had completely decimated around him. He spread his wings wide and exclaimed;

“Aaah that’s better. I’ve not spread my wings for a few years.” His eyes fixed onto Dark Shield.

“I have returned to stop you. How did you escape the ‘Dark Zone’?” He asked in a demanding tone.

“Your silly little prison wasn’t enough to hold me. You forget, you trained me to be just like you. Your power is mine. I absorbed the power from your amulet. It showed me my true potential and I simply willed my way out.” She replied confidently.

“You can’t be as powerful as me, I trained you to be less powerful than me, in case you got… well… evil.”

“I learned things in the Dark Zone. Great things. Observe you foal…” She said rearing up onto her hind legs.

Her horn glowed red and a beam of light shot towards each cage in the corners of the room. The black cages began to glow red also. The glow began to creep over the four princesses bodies, each princess visibly becoming weaker, and finding it harder to stand. One by one, they collapses, obviously exhausted. They passed out.

Whilst all this was happening, Beany could do nothing, but watch. She had watched the transformation, the little battle, and now, her rulers being… drained. For the first time, she had a chance to look at Miles’ cutie mark. She gasped when she saw it. It was the Alicorn Amulet. She looked back at Dark Shields and noticed the same symbol, only hers was inside a shield. She hadn’t really been paying attention out of fear. She was still huddled behind the bound and gagged guards.

Chapter XI: The Musicians

View Online

Things began to get a little intense as Dark Shield and Miles fought each other. Thanks to the spell that had drained the energy of the four princesses, Dark Shield had become quadruple the power she was before. Even Miles, who was thrice as strong as Celestia herself couldn’t hold her back. He was knocked back.

Whilst all this was happening, Bass and Starlight were fighting off a horde of some kind of creature that Dark Shield had spawned to take over the palace.

Using their physical strength and magic, they were being overrun. Bass suddenly felt a tingling from his bass guitar on his back. He glanced at it, and as he fought, the guitar glowed a deep red colour. He grabbed it and stepped back. Starlight jumped out of the way and he hit one of strings. A visible pulse shot out of the guitar and slowed the horde down. The horde moved forward again, advancing towards them slowly. Bass hit another note, and another and soon, he was playing an epic bass solo which was blowing the horde back.

He opened his eyes to see the horde lying on the floor around him. He cheered and brohoofed Starlight.

As they were about to head to the throne room doors, Bass noticed that the hordes bodies were beginning to merge together. He gasped and they both stopped. The horde was growing with each body that merged into this new creature. The creature grew and grew and was beginning to grow as high as the ceiling. Another huge creature was forming next to the first one.

Bass grinned as he grabbed his guitar again. Starlight looked at him with inspiration. A glint shone in her eye as she got an idea.
Her horn lit up and around her, a DJ stack appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. A bass amp and amp lead appeared next to Bass. He plugged it in, nodded at Starlight and hit the strings.

The same pulses began shooting out of the guitar and only slowed the creatures. Starlight hit a switch on the stack, and an electronic beam shot into the air above Bass. Bass’ playing had stopped pulsing towards the creatures, and instead, was headed into a small ball of light above him. The creatures continued to advance slowly.

The two were playing in perfect harmony, with Bass providing an epic bass line and Starlight providing a wubbin’ good backtrack. The two energies were mixing and as the music began to get a little more intense, the two musicians’ horns began to glow. They slowly rose from the ground. They were lifted to the height of what can only be described as the creatures’ head.

The two musician’s eyes were closed as the creatures swung to hit them. The two opened their eyes, and the ball of musical energy shot straight for the creatures.

The ball hit them, and the creatures writhed in agony as they were slowly dissipated until the only thing left, was a pile of ashes on the ground.

The two musicians dropped back onto their feet on the floor next to the ashes. They both smiled and hugged each other. Bass gazed into Starlight’s eyes and she did the same into Bass’ eyes. They moved in for a kiss when a royal guard rushed around the corner.

“You have to help us. Some kind of huge creature is running rampant in the city!” The guard said with a sense of urgency.
Bass and Starlight looked at each other and smiled. Bass grabbed his guitar and Starlight’s horn shone as they ran out of the palace, followed closely by a battalion of royal guards.

Chapter XII: The Sacrifice

Miles was lying on his belly on the floor. The four princesses were gasping for air in the cages, and all of the guards were incapacitated. Beany closed her eyes as a tear dropped from her eye onto the crystal floor.

Dark Shield cackled as her once powerful foe had been reduced to nothing but a weak, old colt.

“You have no idea how long I have been dreaming of this moment. Once I deal with you and these silly little so called princesses of yours, I will rule not only Equestria, but the entire world.” She laughed again as her horn charged up an attack. She pointed her horn straight for Miles.

Miles closed his eyes as his entire life flashed before his eyes. A tear rolled down his cheek as he realised he had failed.

As the beam reached Miles, he waited for the cold embrace of death. Only, it didn’t come. He opened one eye as he saw Beany fly straight in front of him. She looked at him and smiled gently. Suddenly the smile turned to pain, then shock, and then finally she became weak and dropped to the floor. Miles looked at her lifeless body, slumped on the floor. He suddenly felt anger consume him. He stood up and glared at Dark Shield.

She looked back at him as his eyes exploded into a green fire. He screamed so loud, that he shattered the windows of the entire palace. His horn glowed so bright, that Dark Shield was forced to cover her eyes.

A beam of white hot energy shot straight for Dark Shield. It hit her and she screamed as the pain shot through her entire body. Her dragon like wings melted away and her horn was snapped in two.

She screamed yet again as a dark void opened behind her.

“No… NO!.. NOOOOO!!” She screamed as she was sucked into the void behind her. The portal closed and the room was eerily silent. Miles was starting to lose the energy he just used. He shot a beam upwards and it split into four, hitting each cage, disintegrating each one. The four princesses slumped to the floor, still too weak. Miles shot a final beam, this time hitting each princess.

The princesses slowly rose up as their energies returned. The beam faded and Miles dropped like a stone, barely able to keep his eyes open. The princesses surrounded him and each of their horns glowed.

Miles tried to speak “Not… me… her.” He stuttered out as he pointed to Beany. The four looked at each other and fired their magic at Beany’s lifeless corpse.

A warm orange glow surrounded Beany as her body rose up. Her eyes twitched, then her ears. She suddenly gasped for air as her feet touched the ground.

Just then, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Applejack, Bass and Starlight burst into the room. Twilight ran to them and they all hugged. Bass and Starlight ran to Beany and hugged her.

“What happened? Where’s Miles?” Bass asked.

Beany teared up and pointed at the maroon Alicorn lying on the floor. Bass and Starlight gasped in shock. Celestia and Luna released the guards and stood over Miles. Luna began to cry and dropped, crying into Miles’ chest. “He was one of the few who loved my night.” She sobbed. Celestia put a hoof around Luna’s shoulder and a tear rolled down her cheek.

Everyone was quiet as they watched the two princesses cry over this strange new arrival. Confusion was apparent in the other’s faces.

“Is he dead?” asked Beany.

As Beany spoke, Miles gasped for air. Everyone was shocked. Celestia and Luna immediately began nursing him with their magic. Twilight ran up and helped, followed by Cadence. One by one, the unicorns in the room all began helping the princesses to nurse the Alicorn that had saved all of their lives.

Chapter XIII: All Is Revealed

About three days passed as Miles was nursed back to health by the royal doctors. In all that time, Beany never left his bedside.

Miles finally woke up, and the first thing he saw was Beany, smiling sweetly at him.

After a lot of food consumption and plenty of rest, Miles went into the throne room to confront the four princesses.

He was accompanied by the mane six, Bass, Beany and Starlight. They all sat in front of the princesses except for Miles who joined the four on the raised throne platform.

“Ask your questions. I know you have many.” Celestia said calmly.

“Who the hay is this colt and why did you cry when we thought he was dead?” Rainbow Dash asked.

Miles looked across at Luna and Celestia.

“Miles is our brother. His name isn’t really Miles either, it’s ‘Virtuous Gauntlet’. He left a long time ago. It was after… well…” Celestia began to trail off.

“…After I banished King Sombra from this place.” Miles finished.

The ponies were all confused. Twilight spoke up; “But, you said that you and Luna banished Sombra.”
Celestia looked down at the floor. “We were still reasonably new rulers back then. We needed ponies to believe we had done it so they thought we were good leaders. We took the credit for it before Gauntlet could say anything. That’s why he left.”

“I saw reason with their logic, even though I didn’t agree. I left because then no one could know the truth.” Miles said begrudgingly. “I assumed a new identity every 50 years or so until now. I have travelled to every inch of this world and seen things you can only imagine.”

“Why do you have the Alicorn amulet as a cutie mark? And who was that mare?” Rarity asked.

“Actually, I created the amulet to give to my protégé. It released my power slowly as not to overwhelm them. It turned out however, that it corrupted any who wore it. I hid it far from Equestria. The mare was called Virtuous Shield. She was supposed to be my successor. When she heard of the amulet, she went looking for it. She found it and when she returned, she was beyond saving. She called herself Dark Shield and tried to usurp the throne. Back then, she didn’t understand how to use the power, and I was able to banish her to a place called ‘The Dark Zone’”

“Wait a minute, you just said you left Equestria.” Dash said.

“This was before Sombra. It was almost 200 years before then. In fact, back then, Sombra was fair. He was a good stallion. However, he got a hold of the amulet after Shield had taken its power, corrupting him to the core.” Miles replied.
Miles looked at Twilight and Cadence with confusion. “Speaking of questions, why are they princesses? They’re not natural born Alicorns.”

“What th… How can you tell?” Twilight asked

“Oh please, it’s obvious.” Replied Miles

“Twilight is my protégé. She is to replace me if something bad happens.” Celestia answered Miles.

“What about the pink one? Cadence was it?”

“Well, initially, she was going to be my protégé, but then the Crystal Empire returned.” Luna said.

“Ah. Well, I congratulate you both. It is a prestigious honour you have been bestowed with.” Miles said proudly.

“Thank you.” Cadence and Twilight answered.

Questions were exchanged a little more before Miles declared that he was leaving again.

“What? But you have just got here.” Cadence said, startled.

“No. I can’t stay. This is no longer my place. I was the ruling prince once, but no more. My sisters are doing a fine job. I mean Equestria isn’t as big as it once was, but it’s still prosperous and peaceful for the most part.” Miles explained.

Miles walked to the throne room doors, wishing good luck to both Cadence and Twilight. He bid farewell to the rest of the mane six,
and requested that they look after Cadence and Twilight. He approached Starlight and Bass.

“I felt the energy you two created the other day. You are powerful together. Stay in Canterlot. Protect my sisters.”

The two nodded as Miles continued walking out of the door. He walked right by Beany, without a single word. Tears began to fill Beany’s eyes as Miles rounded the corner and out of sight. A flash and the sound of magic could be heard. Beany was about to turn around and go home, when the pony Miles poked his head around the door.

“Well? C’mon then Beany. We’ve got places to go.” He said with a big grin on his face.

Beany flew straight for him and hugged him tightly.

As she did, a slight flash came from her flank. She and Miles looked and it was a cutie mark. Beany was about to cry with joy, then looked at it closer. It was a blank shield, crossed into four sections, like a coat of arms. Miles grinned. Beany looked at him with confusion.

“I’ll explain that on the way.” He said, as they trotted out of the palace.

“On the way to where?” Beany asked.

“Anywhere we want Beany. Anywhere we want.” The two grinned at each other as they disappeared in a flash of light.

Celestia and Luna watched them from the balcony and smiled.

Watching the whole event unfold, sat a single guard. He was bound and gagged like the rest, only, he wasn’t really a guard. When everyone had left the room to take Miles to the Royal Infirmary, he popped out of his binds and flew out of the window. He flew far north into the icy regions of the Griffin Kingdoms.
He landed on the balcony of a castle and wandered inside. The Griffin King watched the guard approach.
A flash of light and the guard is revealed to be a changeling.
“My lord, we have a problem…”
