First published

A diary of Nightmare Moon's 1000 year imprisonment in the moon.

This is a diary of the 1000 year imprisonment in the moon Nightmare Moon had to endure. She goes through her time in her prison watching Equestria thrive under her elder sister Princess Celestia. She placed every little thought of her imprisonment in it and filled its pages with thoughts and plans for the future, if she were to be released from her cell. But when Twilight Sparkle comes to visit Celestia, and in a bit of commotion, Luna takes one of Twilight's books thinking it was the diary. When Twilight realizes she has it, she can't help but look inside.

"Why Twilight Sparkle. It's a great pleasure you came to visit today." Princess Celestia spoke with enthusiasm. Twilight smiled.

"It is always nice to come home every once and a while." Twilight responded. They were walking through the library of the castle where Twilight used to spend most of her time studying or reading. The library had tall shelves that were covered from end to end with history books, reference guides, myths, legends. The pony missed her time in the library, even though she lived in one back in Pony Ville. It had a very nice selection of books but it was maybe half the size of the one in Canterlot where Twilight had grown up and was Princess Celestia's student.

"I'm glad you were able to come and I'm also very happy to see two of your friends as well." They turned their heads to the pink pony making funny faces in the mirror and the other shaking her well done purple back and forth with disapproval. "I can see they are enjoying the visit as well." Twilight laughed as Pinkie continued to stick her tongue out at her reflection in the window. Rarity smiled nervously trying not to snap at Pinkie Pie.

"Well Rarity wished to come so she could see who is wearing what and Pinkie Pie on the other hand." Twilight explained as Rarity trotted slowly over to where Twilight and Celestia were standing. "I'm not sure what she came for."

"Well what for ever reason, I'm glad they came along with you and Spike." Once hearing the name of her assistant, she looked all around the room. Spike, the baby purple and green dragon, was no where to be found.

"Has anyone seen Spike?" Twilight asked quickly, looking around the library. Pinkie stopped what she was doing and trotted happily over to them.

"I thought I saw him follow a pony that had rubies." She smiled brightly, her pink mane bobbing up and down as she made each movement. They all laughed knowing that Spike, like all dragons, have cravings for gem stones. In Pony Ville, he doesn't get them much.

"I'm sure he will be fine, as long as he doesn't over stuff himself. He needs to be able to get home." Twilight spoke, concerned for her assistant. "I mean I know Owlicious can take some of Spike's responsibilities."

"Now darling, you know Spike still isn't fond of that owl of yours." Rarity commented, shaking her mane out of her eyes. "Shouldn't we go and find him."

"Your right Rarity, but first." Twilight turned to the Princess. "There is a book I am looking for."

"Why of course my student."

"I'm looking for a book that contains recipes for potions for health purposes." The Princess nodded and closed her eyes. After only a second, the horn on the top of her mane began to glow brightly. It stayed like that for only a moment, for a book had come around the corner and floated right in front of Twilight. "Oh thank you Princess." Twilight then used her own magic and placed the book into the bag that hung off her back.

"Your very welcome." They started to leave, but once Twilight went to open the door, it slammed open, causing her to fall and the contents of the bag to spill out, along with the book. Two pony servants were in the doorway and they looked to be frightened. One had a black mane and a golden coat while the other had a dark brown coat with a dark green mane.

"My good sirs? What is wrong?" They saw that they were in the presence of the princess and bowed down.

"Your Highness! Please forgive us!" The black maned one spoke.

"It's Luna! We were only cleaning the shelf in her chamber and a book fell over." The other spoke up, scared. "She walked in and now she's..."

He couldn't complete what he was saying, cause Princess Luna herself had come up behind them both. Her purple mane blew over her eye and she glared down at them.

"Luna?" The dark princess looked up at the concerned face of her elder sister.

"Sorry sister. I panicked, that is all." She nodded to the two ponies and they darted down the hallway and out of site. She looked back at the group and saw Twilight Sparkle. "Why hello Twilight. I believe Nightmare Night was when I saw you last." Twilight nodded, still on the floor.

"It is a pleasure to see you as well Princess Luna." The pony was able to get herself up and retrieve some of the dropped articles.

"I apologize. What had fallen was this." Luna pulled out a black and purple book with gold letters spelling out Luna. "This is my diary and I thought they had gone through it."

"Oh my stars. I also have a diary of my own, but it has my cutie mark on it." Rarity spoke, taking a glance back at the purple diamonds that covered her flank.

Luna was going to say something else, but she was startled. The book she held fell to the floor with Twilight's book. They all looked behind her and saw Spike in the entry way.

"I'm sorry to interrupt but the train is leaving soon." Twilight, not realizing the time, used her magic to retrieve the book from the floor and placed it back in her bag.

"I'm so sorry Princess Celestia. I do wish we could stay longer." The unicorn bowed to the Princess and so did Pinkie Pie and Rarity.

"Lets go!" Pinkie exclaimed, hopping down the hallway and towards the front entrance to the castle.

The Return Home

"Well I have to say, that was one interesting visit." Twilight glanced over at Rarity, whom was fixing her mane while using the window of the train as a mirror. "But I cannot wait to get back to Pony Ville. I have been inspired for my new line."
Twilight chuckled a little and looked back forward. Pinkie Pie had her head out the window, allowing the wind to blow through her mane. Her smile stretched across her face. Spike was curled up on the seat asleep.

"We should be arriving in Pony Ville soon." Twilight Sparkle spoke, shifting her mane out of her eyes and checking her saddle bag. Everything was still there. She sighed and leaned back on the cushioned seat. Pinkie brought her head back in to the train car and her mane was all over the place.

"Good, cause I'm hungry!" Pinkie licked her lips, thinking of all the baked goodies back at Sugar Cube Corner, the sweet shop she worked at. "Oh I can taste the cupcakes now." Both Twilight and Rarity laughed sweetly as Pinkie Pie licked her lips even more. Rarity looked back out the window and gasped.

"I believe we have arrived." It was true. Pony Ville was just out the window. They could see the top of Apple Jack's home in Sweet Apple Acres and the top part of the Ever-free forest. The sun was shining so bright and there were no clouds in the sky. "I think Rainbow Dash cleared the clouds in honor of our return." Twilight looked out the same window and saw that there was no cloud to be seen.

"You maybe right. Apple Jack promised to meet us at the station." Once she said this, the train pulled into the Pony Ville station. Ponies were standing around talking to each other or waiting to get on their trains.

"I don't see Apple Jack!" Pinkie Pie spoke, looking out the window again. "No wait! I see her! Oh and Flutter Shy is with her!" She was right. Twilight looked back out the window and saw Apple Jack by the entrance to the station and Flutter Shy was behind her, sticking close. She looked nervous, though she always looked nervous. Her bright pink mane covered one of her eyes.

"Oh I see them!" Rarity exclaimed. She got off her seat and went to the curled up baby dragon. "Oh Spike." She sang sweetly. "It is time to get up." Spike continued to sleep, not hearing her.

"I'll get him Rarity." Twilight beamed her horn and Spike began to float. She levitated him onto her back, with him still asleep. He twitched only a little, but then continued to snooze on.

The train stopped suddenly. "Alright, let us go."

"Howdy y'all!" Apple Jack exclaimed happily. "How was the trip?" She galloped on over to them as they departed the train.

"It was fun!" Pinkie Pie shouted happily. "We got to see Princess Luna!" Flutter Shy squealed and hid behind Apple Jack. All the ponies stared at her strangely.

"I'm guessing she still is afraid about Nightmare Moon." AJ commented, glancing back at Flutter Shy. They all giggled a little and started to walk out of the station and into Pony Ville.

"I must go to my store and create!" Rarity spoke with confidence. She turned to Twilight Sparkle. "I thank you darling for bringing me along."

"Your welcome Rarity. I'm happy you came." Rarity smiled and starting trotting to her boutique on the other side of the town.

"I'll walk you home Twilight. Spike looks like he needs to get to bed." Twilight nodded, looking back at Spike.

"Um, Twilight?" Flutter Shy finally spoke softly. "Did you find that book you needed to give to Zecora?" Twilight nodded and pointed a hoof to her bag that sat on her side. "I may need to look in it cause some of my animal friends are not doing so well."

"I'm sure we can find something before I get it to Zecora. Let us get to the library first."

They reached the library where Twilight and Spike lived. Owlicious came to great them at the door. Twilight quickly put Spike in his bed and came back down the stairs. She went into her saddle bag and pulled out the book.

"Here it is." She levitated it to a podium and opened it for Flutter Shy to see it.

"Thank you Twilight." She began to look but after about a moment, raised an eye brow. "Um, are you sure this is a cural book?" Twilight and Apple Jack looked at each other for a moment and then at their Pegasus friend.

"Yes. Why?" Flutter Shy turned it to the back part of the front cover and it read the words.

"Uh, Twi? Why did you steal Nightmare Moon's Diary?" Apple Jack questioned, turning her head to the unicorn who was staring at the name on the back cover. Twilight couldn't speak. She was shaking in her horseshoes.

"Twilight?" Fluttershy spoke, turning to her with a confused look on her face.

"I didn't take it! I swear!" The unicorn finally spoke, yelling. She backed away from the diary slowly. "I don't even know how it got in there in the first place." She started to pace back and forth. Twilight bit her lip trying to think.

"Well, can't you just send the diary back?" Fluttershy spoke softly, turning her head from the book and back to Twilight, who was still pacing nervously. "Just tell her that it was a mistake. Night- I mean, Princess Luna will understand." Twilight stopped for a moment, and shot a frightened look at her shy Pegasus friend.

"Understand! Do you remember Nightmare Night?" She shot back at her. "She may do something even worse than try and cancel it!" She started to think about what the Princess of the night would do if she found out the diary was in Twilight's possession. Her eyes shrunk in fear, and she bit her lip even harder.

"Look, Twilight. We can fix this." Apple Jack spoke up calmly, but also a little nervous as well. "We can just get back on the train, go to Canterlot, then give it to her and tell her that you grabbed the wrong book."

"That's not it! Princess Celestia gave me the right book in the library!" After a second, Twilight gasped. "That's it! When we got into a commotion with two servant ponies and Luna, the books fell to the floor. The two books look the same. I must have grabbed the wrong one!" She shook again.

"Well that explains it. Why can't you just write to the princess and explain it to her?" Fluttershy asked, flying over to Twilight. "I'm sure if you tell Luna what happened, she won't get angry."

"I can't cause Spike's ability to send a letter will only allow him to send messages to Princess Celestia and no one else." Fluttershy hung her head.

"Well, Twilight lets go to Canterlot and give the diary back." Apple Jack suggested.

"Train takes to long, plus there are no trains going to Canterlot til next week." Twilight explained. "We'll have to wait."
Fluttershy looked up and saw the clock.

"Oh goodness! I have to feed my animals! Angel will be so angry if I don't get him his food soon." She quickly shot out the door of the tree, leaving the door open.

"I need to go too. Have some chores on the farm to take care of." Apple Jack spoke up, heading to the door. She stopped and looked on the nervous unicorn. "Don't worry sugarcube. Just don't read it!"

"Twilight? Twilight?" The pony opened her eyes slowly. Spike was over her with a concerned look on his face. "Are you ok?"

"Yes, I'm ok." She responded, lifting herself off the wood floor of the library. "Could you please repeat what you said?" Spike nodded and pulled the scroll back out again for her to see. She recognized the princess's handwriting right away and started to read aloud.

Dear Twilight Sparkle

My Most Faithful Student,

I have just spoken to Princess Luna, and she has informed me

that her diary has gone missing. I am wishing to know, do you know what may have happened to it?

Twilight shuddered reading it.

"Princess Luna's diary?" Spike asked. "Why would you have anything to do with her diary being missing?" The unicorn sighed and looked over at the book on the podium. The Princess knew now that the diary was no where to be found and she was now worried that Luna would do something horrid or go on a rampage if she found out that Twilight had her private diary.

"Remember when we were in the castle in Canterlot?" Spike nodded. "Well when you ran into the library, Luna and I dropped our books. The books look a lot a like, and so they got mixed up. Now I have Princess Luna's diary!" Spike stared at Twilight for a few seconds, trying to put everything she said together.

"We have the diary of Nightmare Moon/ Princess Luna?" The unicorn nodded her head. The dragon's eyes went wide and began to bite his lip. "Do you know what this means Twilight?"

"I do. Take a letter." Spike ran straight for the desk and pulled out a scroll and a quill. Twilight Sparkle cleared her throat.

Dear Princess Celestia,

I must confess that I do have the diary. The book I had was switched in the commotion in the library. Unfortunately, I am unable to bring the diary back til next week. If you wish, I can bring it to you then.

Your Faithful Student

Twilight Sparkle

Spike finished writing the last of Twilight's letter and rolled the scroll. He quickly went to the window and blew on the scroll, sending it to the Princess.

Twilight began to pace again in the middle of the room. Spike watched her intensely, waiting for the Princess to reply.

After about 10 minutes of pacing, Spike had had it.

"Twilight! Stop pacing! Everything is going to be OK!"

"You can keep saying that Spike, but Princess Luna might try something!" Spike gave her a confused look. "She could turn to Nightmare Moon and terrorize us all!"

"Because of her diary going missing?" Spike snapped back in response. "I'm sure she won't do that!" After he said that, he belched, and green fire and a scroll came out.

"That must be her response." Spike opened the scroll and cleared his throat.

Dear Twilight Sparkle,

I have arranged to go down too Ponyville and retrieve the diary. Please keep it safe and do not read it.

Princess Celestia

Twilight sighed hearing this. Mostly in relief.

"Ok. Princess Celestia is coming here and will get the diary and everything will be just fine!" The unicorn spoke, breathing heavily.

"See Twilight! I told you everything would be..." Spike didn't finish his sentence. His face became scared and began to sweat.

"Spike?" Twilight turned around, and she also became nervous. Spike was staring at the diary on the podium. It was now open and a Pink pony was found reading it's contents.

"Pinkie!" The pony turned around with a confused look on her face. "What are you doing?"

"Oh! You and Spike were talking so I thought I shouldn't interrupt. Then I saw this book and take a look inside." Twilight trotted quickly to her friend and slammed the book shut. The Pink pony shot glances from the book to her unicorn friend.

"Pinkie Pie! Do you have any idea what you were reading?" Twilight asked loudly. She was shaking again, but this time with frustration.

"It looked more like a diary of some sort. I don't know." Twilight did a face-hoof, and magically lifted the book from the podium. Bringing the book to her, the unicorn trotted over to her saddle bag and placed it inside. "What's wrong? It's just an old book."

"What's wrong?" Twilight spoke sarcastically. She heaved a few times and she was back to shuddering.

Spike went over to Pinkie Pie and began to explain. "Well apparently when you, Rarity, Twilight and I were in Canterlot, a book Twilight was supposed to borrow and Princess Luna's diary got mixed up and now we have the diary." Pinkie Pie's eyes went wide hearing this.

"No wonder it mentioned being trapped on the moon!" Twilight turned around right after Pinkie spoke this.

"Are you saying that this diary contains the events of when Luna was in the moon?"

"I guess. You yelled at me when I was getting to a good part." She smiled a little and began to jump around like she usually does.

"Ugh! We were told specifically not to read the diary by the Princess!" The unicorn blurted out, pacing again.

"Do we know when the Princess is coming to Ponyville?" Spike asked.

"She said she just made arrangements to come here and retrieve it. She wasn't specific on when she would arrive." Spike sighed. Everyone in the library was silent now, but then it was broken when Spike burped and a scroll came out. "What does it say Spike?"

The dragon cleared his throat and began to read.

Dear Twilight Sparkle,

I have arranged to come down to Ponyville later this afternoon. I will also be bringing the book you were supposed to have. As I said in my previous letter, please do not read the diary. Luna wishes to keep her life very very private.

"She is coming today?" Twilight spoke up after Spike had read the letter. The baby dragon nodded slowly. Twilight turned to Pinkie Pie. The pink pony just stood there with a freaky smile on her face.

"Ok Pinkie! You are to say nothing to the Princess about this!" Pinkie Pie's face went down a little once she heard this. "Got it!" The pony nodded slowly.

"Cross my heart, hope to fly. Stick a cupcake in my eye." She spoke softly. Twilight's expression apparently frightened her.
