Melancholy is a rat. He was brought to Equestria with Pottasches by the mirror. Soon after arriving, the rat took to studying the mirror. He found that the mirror was originally a portal that allowed the story of Twilight Sparkle and her friends to be broadcasted to the human world. He watched all of the episodes through the mirror, and was able to see the reactions of thousands of bronies through their computers. He grew on the mirror’s knowledge, and learned its potential.

Then he learned his own power. Only able to exist in the presence of a heart, the rat bound himself to others. He could tell ponies the things that could cause them the most distress. Once a pony became melancholy, their hearts became bigger. The bigger the heart, the farther the rat could travel.

The mirror had been his guiding light for a long time. With it, he had kept his world on track and strictly adhering to canon law. Through the mirror, he saw the divergent worlds. Worlds of shipping, or darkness, or both. Worlds that were impossible, and worlds that could not support themselves. Worlds that ended. Worlds with no substance. Worlds that were much better than the original that he was copying.

His world could be anything.
