Jacob Doakes has an unusual hobby- he loves to explore abandoned places. Crumbling halls, collapsed staircases, long-empty rooms... every one tells him a story. But on one moonlit night, a trip down the wrong corridor sends him tumbling- not to his death, but into an entirely new world. Now, to return home, Jacob must unearth the story and alter the mysterious fate of the grandest abandoned place he's ever explored:
Canterlot.

What do a globetrotting archaeologist, a time-tossed samurai, and six magical multicolored ponies have in common? Not much! But when a magical gem and sheer coincidence throw them into a strange new place seemingly formed out of the worst aspects of each of their worlds, they're going to have to work together to get home- while they still have homes to get back to!
(Rated T for violence and gunplay.)

This story started as a half-hearted NaNoRiMo project and an effort to break through some writer's block on other projects. It's also a major departure from my typical type of writing- written in third-person omniscient rather than third-person subjective (which is not an easy transition to make). It's certainly not my first piece of fanfiction, but it's the broadest crossover I've ever attempted, and getting all of the characters to stay true to form while interacting with each other is something of a challenge. But hey, how do we learn if we never challenge ourselves?
A minor note here- I've taken a bit of liberty with the powers of earth ponies. They've been said to have "a connection with the earth", and I've taken that to mean the ability to sense things about the terrain around them.
A cursed curio causes a crisis in the community of Ponyville! With our usual heroines out of action and more victims being claimed by the hour, only one pony's special difference saves her. But can she save everyone else before it's too late?

...about this hiatus.
There really is one primary reason why I write. It isn't to become "Internet famous"; if that was my goal, then I'm really going about it the wrong way. (I'm horrible about self-promotion.) And while I love my followers and like knowing that they look forward to reading my writing, when you get down to brass tacks, that's not what I'm doing it for either. In a nutshell, I write because I enjoy writing. And that leads me to my current problem:
I'm not enjoying writing anymore.
My last blog post came after a fairly significant amount of time spent talking myself down from deleting everything and walking away from the site, something I didn't think I would ever consider doing. (The "deleting everything" part, anyway. I've left other sites before, but never took down whatever I'd contributed.) But writing has become so much of a chore for me now that looking at everything I've written before just fills me with this sense of disgust towards myself, because quite honestly it doesn't seem like I can do that anymore. I've been trying to force myself to push ahead to overcome this, and the net result is that Chapter 3 of Desperate Times is now 10,656 words of complete and utter drivel. Maybe it's a side-effect of some other issues going on right now (that I'm not going to go into here; this post in itself is far more self-revealing than I'm typically comfortable with), but that knowledge certainly doesn't make things any easier.
tl;dr version: Can't brain enough to write anymore; can't guarantee any more updates. Sorry. ![]()

>>324199 And with that, the wait for a sequel (patiently) begins
>>323824 I have thought about it, really. In fact I found myself constructing a basic plot and storyline during work one day. But to be honest, if I ever do- and I can't promise that it's a thing that'll happen- it would not be for quite a while. It'd require a lot of careful world-building in order to do the story any sort of real justice.
Hey, I've just finished reading your story Written in Dust. I found it to be really enjoyable. I have a question though, probably a dumb one. Have you thought of starting a series following the events in the story? I'm kind of interested to see the events after Jacob and Luna's discussion at the end of the story.
I just made you much happier: I started a tropes page for Written in Dust. Here it is!
Tag, you're it!
>>204987 You have made me a very happy author! Thanks much!
*poke* I just put Written in Dust on the Fanfic Recs page for FiM on TV Tropes. Thought you might want to know.
I must truly say that Crossed Paths has left me thoroughly impressed. At first I did not know if I liked it. But I realized that I could not have put it down until I had finished it. Many thanks for the great story.
Keep up the great work!!
well, Crossed Paths and promises of a sequel or two have earned you a watch, good sir.
