New Blog Post: How to Use Commas
After months of saying that I'd create another "Egghead's Guide to..." blog post, I've finally gone and done it. My new uber-entry is all about the rules for using commas correctly in a story. Though it did end up becoming a lot longer than I intended, I still hope that people find it useful.

Shipping is Magic
So I've kind of wanted to do this for awhile after seeing the original "Shipping is Magic" image. This is a map of all of the ships that I've read on this site. From 307 stories I found the following: 305 ships in total, 180 unique ships. My most-read ships are: 1. Twidash (35) 2. Appledash (26) 3. Flutterdash (19). Twilight is the most-shipped pony, with 118 ships spread amongst 16 ponies. Rainbow Dash is the second most-shipped pony, 103 ships with 12 ponies.
The spreadsheet that I use to track the stories I read now contains so many cells with various formulas that it actually takes a second to update after I make a change. All for some totally-pointless statistics that no one but me actually cares about. :twilightblush:

Somehow, I'm always surprised by how much work goes into each of the "Egghead's Guide to..." installments. It certainly gives me more appreciation of the authors on this site. When you look at how often I get around to posting a new blog post, it's not surprising that I don't write any fanfics, I just don't have the attention span.
That being said, I've got two new installments that are in various stages of completion. A guide to tenses and writing is almost finished, and I'm currently working on a guide to semicolons, colons, hyphens and dashes. Plus, I have been doing some research into the requested installment about paragraph length. I've been working on it, honest!

The Excel spreadsheet that I use to keep track of the pony fics I read (doesn't everyone do that?
) has over 300 stories listed, for a combined wordcount of over seven million words. That's almost 18k words a day of pony. And I'm loving it. Here's to another years of awesome romance fics!

Hmm, very interesting. I miss having the "words read" counter on the profile page, so I decided to add up the word counts of all the stories I've saved to my favorites. Here are the results:
Total words: 5.5 Million Words
Average story length: 22 Thousand Words
Longest Story: Romance Reports (185 Thousand Words)
That's just under the length of ten copies of War and Peace. Wowsa.
Of course the actual amount that I've read on this site must be much higher than that, since when the counter was removed four or five months ago I was approaching five million then. I'd guess, based on these numbers, that two-thirds of the stories I've read get put into my favorites. Still, even with this conservative estimate, that's about 19 thousands words read every day since I joined.
But the most interesting thing to me is the fact that the longest story that I read--Romance Reports--is also the first MLP fanfic that I ever read.

I've had a few stories I was following go from good to bad, which is why I now wait awhile before giving out a thumbs up. It would be nice if you could revoke them, since sometimes I feel a story is not longer good enough to warrant a thumbs up, but not bad enough to deserve a thumbs down, but what're ya gonna do?
I'll probably check out some of your other stuff pretty soon.
And yes, happy, curly-haired Twilight is cutest pony.

I have been meaning to post something like this for some time, but I have put it off.
My new job is taking up most of my time. Before, I had lots of spare time in which to proofread and edit stories for people. Now, I have much less spare time, and much, much less excess energy. This has caused me to miss responded to several people, and to greatly delay my work. I am very sorry about this. And so, I feel that I am unable to offer my services as proofreader to anyone at this time. If you feel that you might have a special case, or need some specific help or advice, by all means contact me, but don't expect a swift reply.
I love helping others with their writing, and the knowledge that I gain while helping others learn is almost as great a reward as knowing that I have made a story better for my work, but when I have so little energy for literature that even my own writing has come to a halt, it is time to hang up the hat.
