Un huh.

That was the sound of my jaw hitting the floor.

"What? Why?"

I think I just discovered something amazing.

Well, look at this:

The back of the box say that Sunset Shimmer was Celestia's other pupil. This could very easily mean that Shimmer here, came before Twilight. Now why would Twilight have to replace Shimmer, unless Shimmer could no longer perform in her duties as the Princess' pupil. Now, as we have seen, Twilight goes to the world of Equestria Girls via a magical mirror.

"I think you're beginning to ramble."

Like you're one to talk. Anyway, what's to say that Shimmer didn't go through the mirror first? Who's to say that Shimmer went in, and became popular, perhaps to the point where she didn't want to go back?

Sunset Shimmer tasted power, and wanted it, becoming a queen bee, and refused to return to Equestria. Meanwhile, Celestia, on the other side, has lost her student, and bars anyone from entering the mirror for fear of losing them also.

And then comes Twilight, the one mare who has taken everything in stride, who has succeeded at every turn.

Maybe...just maybe...she could save her long-lost friend.

Man, if Equestria Girls isn't that, I'd be a little disappointed.

At the very least it'd make a good fan fic.
