For Pony POV Series Dark World. It was never Nightmare Eclipse's endless torture of Discord that reformed him. Evil cannot cure evil. Or at the very least, not without replacing it with a WORSE evil. (The jerk who goes from smug, to so convinced of his own superiority he feels no need to be smug.)
The torture by itself would have just made him even more vindictive and cruel towards ponies.
