Music SIG Likes #19 :: The Black Keys ( + Dan Auerbach) · 1:44am Jun 22nd, 2016

A good, healthy dose of garage rock/blues rock here. This was actually the first band that introduced me to this genre and got me interested in it. Their earlier works have a deliciously raw blues sound that I absolutely love. Their later works veer more towards psychedelic; not necessarily bad, just different.

Dan Auerbach, the lead (and only) singer, released a solo album, so he is lumped in this list as well.

Bit of a repeat here as I have already posted this particular band in a blog post, but I will mention them again to make them part of the "official" list.

Some melodic death/industrial metal from Sweden. These chaps feature quite prominently in our various playlists on the production floor. I personally prefer their more melodic later works; they (IMHO) really seem to have hit their stride in Hail the Apocalypse.

Sometimes someone will be reading these silly little music blogs and suggest something new and incredible and excellent that I have never even heard of. This was one of those times.

Some more folkish music again. I do not know much about Trevor Green; there is a dearth of information out there on the internet concerning his band (as it seems to happen with these sort of bands), but I enjoy his work. He makes extensive use of didgeridoos in his songs which give it a unique flair.

Music SIG Likes #20 :: Volbeat (part deux) · 2:21am Jul 19th, 2016

Volbeat has come through again with their new album Seal The Deal & Let's Boogie.

An absolutely delicious mix of hard-rock and rockabilly, with a little gospel choir thrown into the mix. Seriously though, if you have enjoyed their previous works, you own it to yourself to purchase (save up if necessary!) this album.

Something light and fluffy; pop with a measure of folk and a hint of jazz. Ebullient, cheerful, and upbeat, Lonely Drifter Karen always seems to bring a smile to my face whenever she pops up on my playlist

Now we start the actual "Music Sigawesome Likes" proper.

This is probably the "crown jewels" of my music collection; my #1, all time favourite band which I have purchased every CD they produced. Volbeat has a unique, distinctive sound that (to my inexperienced ears) sounds like 3 parts hard rock, mixed with two parts rockabilly with a little heavy metal mixed in for flavour; think old school Metallica and Elvis with a sprinkling of Johnny Cash.

Music SIG Likes #37 :: Narcotango · 12:38am Feb 20th, 2017

Some modern neo-tango courtesy of Argentine composer Carlos Libedinsky and his band Narcotango. It certainly is interesting; imagine a fusion of traditional tango swirled in with some dubstep and house. Essentially tango as interpreted by Vinyl Scratch. All the steamy sultriness of tango with a seasoning of modern, electronic dance beats.

Some dance-rock/dance-punk style music from Glasgow. Significant Other actually introduced me to them a while back. Not something I typically would have listened to, but it certainly has an upbeat, energetic feel to it. Perfect for dancing flailing enthusiastically around the flat or jumping on the bed, singing into a hairbrush "microphone".

An excellent British Folk Rock musician with a career spanning decades. My brother in law and father in law both introduced me to him. Quite talented certainly enjoyable to listen too if you have a penchant for folk-rock type music.

Some lovely down-tempo acoustic rock with a generous helping of folk. Unseen Guest's music certainly has a calm, laid back feel that is perfect (IMHO) for sitting quietly with a significant other (or friend) simply watching a light thunderstorm through an open door...

I think this is my all-time favourite band so far (just barely edging out Volbeat). I practically grew up listening to them thanks to my brothers. A delicious blend of prog rock, electronica, and space rock. A rather distinctive sound, especially with Matt Bellamy's impressive, boisterous vocals.

As Tom Lehrer said "One man deserves the credit, one man deserves the blame". I can thank Daedalus Aegle here for introducing me and Significant Other to Jason Webley's music. It is a nice blend of folk and punk which mixes manic violin and rhythmic guitar in equal measure.

I learned about a new instrument recently: Dobro resonator guitar. It has a distinctive look ("guitar with a shield thingy on the front) a distincitve sound (about midway between an acoustic guitar and a banjo) and features prominently in many blues/bluegrass/country songs. Needless to say, it features prominently in Brother Dege's music what with the rhythmic blues/folk style with a smattering of mellow rock mixed in for taste.

Some delightful folk and bluegrass this time around courtesy of Poor Man's Poison. One of my brothers introduced me to them recently. I am not usually one for this type of music (a bit too much country), but they have certainly grown on me. Mandolin is one of those instruments I enjoy listening to (another is dobro), and Poor Man's Poison has it in spades.

Pirate Metal.

Pirate. Metal. Just take a moment to savour the delicious barminess.

Alsestorm is an interesting combination of power metal with folk metal elements mixed in all wrapped in bombastic pirate-themed theatrics. Never before did I imagine I would ever utter the phrase "heavy-metal accordion".

Something new, apropos of nothing: some blog posts wherein I act my age and slap a bunch of self-indulgent stuff various musical bits and bobs I enjoy listening to up on a public blog post.

At the very least, I figure who reads this may (possibly) discover something new and exciting, or (more likely) have something to laugh at and poke with sticks.
