I am currently writing a story that has Equestria on the verge of collapse due to a major diplomatic crisis that is happening. Can somepony please help?

What kind of stress on Equestria does this crises cause? Invasion from outside? Internal unrest? Something else?

does it have to do with what happens in season 8 episode 1

In my story, Equestria is in danger of collapse. The reason boils down to several key points:
1. Equestrian government has pretty much been the same for a thousand years, and is in a radically different world (imagine Rome at the end of it's Pax Romana)
2. A major, and I mean MAJOR, diplomatic crisis is being resolved (with little progress) in Canterlot
3. Several ponies from an alternate dimention land in Equestria to flee from a tyrant (they resemble two antagonists and Applejack, but are good), and are under watch by the Elements
