So, I like Double Diamond as a reformed member of Our Town, and possibly as Lance as leader of the Elite Four... but there's something about him I just don't get:

His name.

I mean... not every pony has a name or cutie mark that matches what they do, of course. Derpy's bubbles don't seem to have anything to do with being a mail mare, and I like the idea that Cherry Berry is an inventor despite her berry cutie mark. But I don't see how "Double Diamond" relates to... anything. I thought it might be a metaphorical reference to snowflakes, but his cutie mark is three instead of being "doubled".

Is "Double Diamond" a reference to something, or is it just one of those names that it's best not to think too much about?
