It's no problem, you are not forced to participate, I only wanted clarification. And think of it like this...even if you lose the contest, you still walk away with a good story, so you still won in the long run.

You are not the first writer I met in this site that feels that way It's a common thing so there's no problem. Write what you believe works, even if a contest doesn't allow it, then make the story your own and roll with it.

The purpose is to write about how your character became who they are in the present. So if he/she needing to die in order to become who they are now is needed, then it's allowed. Just don't be too graphic in the death.
