It's more than likely an upgraded version of the elements. I'm pretty sure that there's some sort of TV trope that has the heroes sacrifice their powers to stop a villain/something and they then have to go through some kind of trials or whatever to get new improved versions of their old powers. Power Rangers did this all the time.
