Going into this chapter, I thought the biggest problem would be the Apple Family's accents. It turned out the biggest problem was me not having any idea what I was going to do and the accents ending up being no issue at all (Twilight's worrying appears to be rubbing off on me).

In order for me to ensure that they wouldn't be an issue, I did what any fanfic author who's being influenced by Twilight would do: I watched every single Kyrospawn that had Apple Family members in it and tried to get a good idea of what their accents were like. To do this, I complied a “cheat sheet” to help me when I was writing.

The first thing I noticed was that Applejack doesn't use what I'll call the “Standard Applejack Fanfiction Accent” (SAFA). In SAFA, Applejack replaces her “I” with “Ah”. Not once did she do this in any of the videos I saw. The reason this occurs is because she does replace the “I” with “Ah” when saying the contraction “I'm”. (“Can't hear yah, Ah'm asleep”). Writers simply expanded that to include the use of “I”, even though she never says “Ah”, only “Ah'm”.

In SAFA, other words are replaced as well (such as “them”=“'em”). The other biggest mistake SAFA makes is the constant use of “yah” in place of “you”. Applejack did this only one time (“Can't hear yah, Ah'm asleep”). Every other instance, she uses “you”.

The final difference between SAFA and her actual accent is how she talks. In SAFA, she always has the accent, no matter how she's talking. In reality, when she's sad (“Now you know”) or serious (“Get my rope”) her accent is less pronounced and she fully enunciates each word.

Several words she doesn't always replace (as was noted). Not every time she said “my” did she pronounce it “mah”. As was mentioned, she only used “yah” once. How she's talking (is she sad, angry, serious, relaxed, etc.) will determine whether she uses the modified word or the normal one.
There were a couple of changes that were near universal. Dropping the “g” in “ing” was done in every instance, except when it made the word unreadable (i.e. in “bring”, “sing”, etc.). This is a common trait, one that even my accent uses. Similarly, every time, “your/'re” became “yer”, “because” dropped the “be”, and “isn't” became “ain't”.

While Apple Bloom didn't appear in Chapter Seven, I still decided to look at her accent for future reference. The main thing I noticed was it is, essentially, a heavier version of Applejack's. She does replace “I” with “Ah”, and uses “mah” and “yah” far more frequently then Applejack, although not every time, again depending on how she's talking.

Sadly, Big Mac didn't have enough lines for me to get a good idea of what his accent was like. From what I heard, however, it appears his is the “lightest” of the Apple Family, as I never once heard him replace any words. This may be due to the small sample size, however. Only more lines can definitively clear it up.

Granny Smith's accent was actually fairly easy to write. Mainly because my mother's side of the family has a similar speech pattern (“Go to the davenport and I'll fetch you a warsh rag”). She has probably the heaviest of the accents, not only following Apple Bloom's replacement tendencies but also replacing “for” with “fer”, and “pretty” with “purdy”. Unlike the others, every time, she replaced “my” with “mah” and “you” with “yah”. “I” was the only word which she didn't always replace. Another thing I noticed was her heavy use of similes (“it was [adjective] than...”).

While it was a bit of a pain sorting their accents out, when it came time to actually write the dialogue, it made a world of difference.
