Elements of Excess Canceled · 4:25pm Nov 23rd, 2014

I debated it for a long time, but I think it is finally time to admit that I am never going to finish this story. I could give you some fancy excuse or meandering reason, but I'll spare you that. The simple fact is that when I sat down to write the next chapter, despite having the plotline in my head, nothing happened. I tried to write and nothing came out. I like to think of myself as a professional with standards, which is why I was so afraid to cancel it for so long.

This is the first thing I wrote that was actually popular, so I figured its cancelation warranted some sort of notice. I'm not done writing pony prose, but I simply don't have the drive to finish this story. This story is a mess and my own lack of skill is very apparent reading it so long after I wrote it. A lot of the themes and ideas in it also repeat in my other stories. I'm flattered that so many people enjoyed it despite its flaws, however, and I hope that the other things I have written and will continue to write will also entertain people.

I considered posting all my notes and outlines, but most of them were lost when my previous computer got a virus. For what it's worth, I put a rough outline of the rest of the story in a Gdoc over here. I considered uploading it as a chapter, but I did not want to mislead anyone with an update notification. After reading Peachy Keen's advice below, it is now a chapter entry, as well.

I know how disappointing it is when a story one likes stops updating. I've gotten that feeling myself (once from Princess Sparkle's School for Eccentric Unicorns and again from the Ask Dirty Diamond Tiara tumblr). Feel free to vent in the comments, though be aware that I'm committed to the decision.

I can empathise with this sentiment.

Well that sucks, but oh well. It kind of sounds like the ending chapters (if those notes are anything to go on) were going to a bit more dark maybe, almost as if the story was going to end without them getting "purged". Anyway, good luck in the future with stories.

It's a shame, but how things are is how things are. As long as you don't take down the story altogether, people can still enjoy what's written. An just because you don't have the ending doesn't mean we can't imagine one for ourselves.

This is rather saddening. I think I've been following this fic before I got a fimfic account. Probably one of the most memorable moments of the fic was the Capital G reference. What? I like Trent Reznor lots.

Maybe I'll have a peek at your other works if I can deal withy current backlog. I think I've only read one other of your stories.

I'm sorry to hear it. Still, thank you for providing a summary of what was left.

Such a shame. I feel like this is becoming a common tend for a lot of the fics I started reading early into my first dive into Fim Fiction. I was just starting to wonder if this story would suffer the same fate. Oh well, must keep my hopes high that others will start up again someday. Not sure if I will check your other works or not. Got my own fic I should be updating more anyways. Well good luck to you and your future stuff.:rainbowdetermined2:

My reaction to the cancelation is in the story comments, anyway, read the outline, and all can say is that that's a downer, the story would have been great but at least I can fill it in in my head.

Rest in Peace Epic Story of Awesomeness

It takes a lot of will to cancel a story, it's difficult to declare a fic dead. I respect you for doing so instead of leaving it incomplete forever. Instead, everyone can enjoy it for what it was and move on.

Also, 10,000 internet points to you for posting the outline for the ending! Now we know how it ends, and I can't speak for everyone else, but it makes me happy and satisfied to know the ending to a canceled fic even if it isn't all purty-ed up with the extra words an actually completed fic would!

It's nice that you posted the rough outline here, and I'll respect whatever decision you make, but maybe consider posting the rough outline as an authors note at the end of the last chapter or reconsider posting one last chapter titled "FIC CANCELED, ROUGH OUTLINE OF ENDING HERE" or something. :twilightsheepish: Nothing misleading about that!

I'm good either way of course, it'd just be for people who still have the story in their tracking folder and don't read blog posts. *shrugs*

Anyway! Yeah, kudos for canceling a dead fic and for posting the ending!

2613639 Given the view count on this blog post, I think you may be right. I posted it as a chapter update--better to be absolutely sure that everyone is aware of it, I suppose.

Thank you for letting us, the readers, know of your decision to cancel the story. I wish more authors that can't finish a story would do that. Good luck with your other endeavors.

I know what it's likely to lose heart for a story like this. I wish I was able to still make stuff that had as many likes as yours does.

to be honest, I enjoyed reading the story mostly because the twisted character personalities were so entertaining. I guess the plotline itself was superfluous to me, so cancelling it doesn't bother me much. no offense meant! :twilightsheepish:
