SCIENCE! · 12:19am Jun 9th, 2012

Well, today was a slow day at work, so a bunch of the biologists and I sat around and BSed for most of the day. As one was a brony, I told him about AAG/BH and the stuff concerning taxa. After he spent an hour reading the stories, we then sat the rest of the day working on scientific taxa (for ones I didn’t create already.) So here you are, scientific taxa for a fanfic, coming right at you, with some help courtesy of a biologist from an environmental agency (who says government doesn’t work for you? :rainbowlaugh:)

Some notes:

- This will only cover sapient (high-function reasoning) animals, and not merely sentient (low-function reasoning) ones. Humans are HFR; your dog is LFR. Presume the pets, regardless of how sapient they may act at times are merely well-trained and thus sentient vice sapient.

- Chromosomes will be listed in numbers. Any numbers alone indicates a diploid species (needs two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent). For multiple set species, those will be mentioned as such. An example of a diploid species is humans.

- Realize that some species will speciate (create a new species) at either the species level or the subspecies level. For those that have speciated at the subspecies level, they are given a new subspecies name or a new species name outright. The most notable example of speciation is humanity (Homo sapiens divided into H. s. idaltu and H. s. sapiens)

- A chimera species is (taxon) x (taxon). Note that the paternal species is always listed first. Chimera species do exist; the most notable example is the mule (Equus asinus x E. caballus.) Over time, a chimera species may speciate into a distinct species (it’s believed that mules may be doing that relatively soon, and E. a. caballonoides has been proposed as the taxon.)

- Note that hybridized species are not the same as a cryptozoological (“crypto”) species. For example, gryphons are a crypto species; they can mate and have children (chimeras are almost always sterile) and have behaviors not endemic to the species they seem to look like.

- Some names of crypto species will come from already invented taxa (yes, some do exist); for those that we didn’t make up, I’ll underline just for your edification.

- Notes after each species name apply only to the fanfic universe and are not indicative of real life or canon MLP.

This list will be updated as/if other species are introduced.

Needless to say, anyone is allowed to use these; credit me if you’d like.

That being said, let’s get going!

So I guess this means that hippogriffs are off the table unless we're invoking a "What science done?!" moment?

Interesting, missing a couple of species: Cows, sheep, diamond dog, minotaur, and those goats that I am not sure are sentient but can work a stage performance. Those guys were weird.

So if the human is turned into a pony and they have a foal that way would it be Equus sapiens x Homo sapiens sapiens? Would they be sterile as well? Granted magic is involved in the transformation, but you never know.

Homo sapiens idaltu, human mages (believed extinct as of 7th century AD). I'm guessing they got tired and went west to the undying lands, or they are the Illuminati and control the worlds supply of cookies and milk. Among other things.

I only restricted it currently to species in the series. I realize sea serpents aren't in there, but I figured, what the hay. It'll probably end up there anyway, as well as the others.

It would actually be E. s. (subspecies) x Homo sapiens sapiens.

As for H. s. idaltu, maybe they're hanging out in Avalon with King Arthur.

They find Atlantis and discover the long lost humans chilling out there.

Do sea ponies exist in this world?

Yup - it's the Royal Equestriani Navy's equivalent of the US Navy SEALs. :trollestia:

Ok, why does Alter Earth get so many different sapient species and we only get one? Stupid normal Earth with its normal ways of doing normailty things. I want a talking flying squirrel and big moose.

Well we got an ape to speak sign language, just need to do this with dolphins. Though this really does not surprise me, according to a certain book we are the third smartest creature on the planet.

Just a thought, did winged humans exist? Having Earth mirror Alter Earth a long time ago would be interesting.
