Sony and Spider-Man Villain Movies · 10:01pm May 10th, 2014
With Sony focusing so much on the VILLAINS of Spider-Man and not the marketable heroes under his brand like Spider-Girl, Prowler, The Slingers, Alpha, etc, I turn my attention to my favorite Spider-Man supporting character Phil Urich
Phil Urich was a reporter for the Daily Bugle, but also the only heroic version of the Green Goblin, even had a 13 issue comic series during that time. He has an uncle named Ben, and worked got money by taking pictures of his alter-ego, when he was the Green Goblin. On a journalism assignment, Phil joined his uncle Ben in an investigation on an Osborn Industries building. When his uncle was besieged by attackers in the building, Phil hid and tried to find help. Stumbling upon an experimental new Green Goblin costume Phil also fell into a chamber of the Goblin Formula.
Quickly dressing up in the suit, he scared off the hoods. Later on, he decided that the costume and equipment were worth using.
After his discovery of the Goblin arsenal and equipment, Phil ran into the Scarlet Spider, Rhino, the Hobgoblin (Jason Macendale), Joystick and others. Many were unsure of his purpose and motives as they were also curious about this new Goblin on the scene.
It was not until a corrupt judge targeted Ben and sent the assassin Purge to kill him that Phil decided to take on his new persona with responsibility. Teaming up with Daredevil, the pair was able to stop Purge. This act gave Phil a lot of attention and he developed a small but devoted following. Liz Allan asked Ben for information on who was using her husband's former identity. She later gave Phil her "blessing" after he saved her and her son Normie from Angelface. Eventually his costume was destroyed and he retired.
In the MC2 AKA Spider-Girl Universe, he became the Gold Goblin and continued being a hero.
Currently in the mainstream 616 he went insane, became the new Hobgoblin as a villain
Then became the Goblin Knight as a commander in Norman Osborn's "Goblin Kingdom"
However he still stands as the FIRST heroic Goblin. I honestly think we can see a movie based on him as a heroic Goblin. Whether Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, or not, they could just title the movie "Goblin" and focus on Phil. Making it clear he's using stuff from the Green Goblin, would make people interested. Like it's an anti Spider-Man movie. Becomes a crime fighter not for revenge or even because it's the right thing to do, but for fame and adulation, completely missing the point of what Spider-Man does. I could easily see that kind of set up working.
Wait, Phil Urich...uncle Ben... This guy is the nephew of Ben Urich? I never knew the guy had a nephew.
Ok that is awesome...
FRAKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!
Ok, I am with you on this, that would be cool to see. Heck, makes me think it would be awesome if they could make a Spider-man 2099 movie (I am a fan of that verse as well as the MC2)
2098218 I wasn't too thrilled that he's a villain now either, but he had been practically shelved for a while, only showing up here or there, so it's still nice to see him taking a prominent role in the Marvel Universe again.
Phil also has a power unique to himself from the other Goblins. The Goblin Laugh,

But yeah, I think Phil could carry his own movie. Have it where the main villain is Harry, who isn't too keen on a new Goblin being in town. I have ALWAYS wanted to see a Goblin VS Goblin fight done live action. I think they'd have to make Phil Hobgoblin for it though, since I doubt they'd try to market a Green Goblin movie that doesn't have an Osborn as the Goblin.
Yeah Avi Arad(Big wig at Sony when it comes to Spider-Man), said they won't be using different Spider-Men. No 2099, no Miles Morales, no Ben Reilly becoming Spider-Man. Which I think is stupid myself. I mean all they HAVE is Spider-Man. You'd think they would want to use every single marketable character they have even IF it's another version of Spider-Man.
My god.... a heroic Goblin.... KICK ASS! It's settled this guy is gonna be in our story.
2101239 As Hobgoblin. Which oddly enough, in some myth hobgoblins are considered good, or at the very least not QUITE as bad as goblins. Keep in mind they can still be evil or at the very least mischievous, but aren't quite as malevolent as goblins.
Which in itself fits Marvel's Hobgoblin, who is NOWHERE near as evil as Green Goblin. No version of Hobgoblin(Kingsley, Macendale, Urich, etc), has ever come close to the level of evil that is Norman Osborn. Most versions just do what they do for the money and that's it.
