It's been bugging me for a while now, and I have no idea on the ages people give them. The only one I've been told is in "Anthropolgy" by that JasontheHuman bloke where it's said that Lyra's 16, but I think that's far too young.
Here are my thoughts/reasonings for the ages I believe them to be (and I think I'm going older than most people think...).
Twilight: 21 ish - She's a student, and therefore would be roughly that old if at university and doing a doctorate (in friendship). She's also the youngest of the bunch.
Rainbow Dash: 25 - She's holding down a steady job but still has aspirations of being world famous and being a celebrity, so maturity levels would be appropriate for this age.
Fluttershy: Around the same age as Rainbow Dash - seen as a filly with Rainbow Dash in Cloudsdale, so I assume they were friends, and were therefore in the same year group, thus are the same age... ish.
Pinkie Pie: 24 - Because Fluttershy's a year older than her. Also, it kinda works that age does. She's a party animal, but she also rents a room with a family and earns a decent living. Any younger than this wouldn't really work. (Well... 23 or 22 might, but they're not one less than 25.)
Applejack: 27 - She runs a farm to an exceptional standard, and therefore must be a proper mature adult to be able to do this. Also, her attitude to things seems appropriate of that with an older Pony. (Also, Big Mac: 32 - Just because...)
Rarity: 29 - Obviously the most mature of the bunch and the least naive, so I deem her to be the oldest. Why 29, you ask? Because she runs her own business very proffessionally, therefore... something... had reasons a while ago but I forgot... but you get the idea.
BONUS! CMC: 8 - Because I say so
Keep in mind, I'm ignoring the fact they still have slumber parties and so that doesn't influence my opinions. Besides, adults can have sleepovers/slumber parties, they just generally involve alcohol...
So yeah, that's my thoughts, in case any of you get confused with my fics that mention age. What do you think?
Everything seems about right to me. Just one thing, it is cannon that Fluttershy is a year older than Pinkie so keep that in mind.
Your arguments sound reasonable and well thought out, but I still imagined them to be younger. Here's my reasoning.
First of all, pony psych is probably different from human psych. (at least in my view) So I figured they matured at an earlier age, or are considered adults at an earlier age then humans. One influence of this thought is that my dad used to raise horses. Now onto the Mane 6.
Twilight: I figure 15-17 ish because she is a freaking genius and therefore was way ahead of everypony else.
Rainbow Dash: 16-18 ish because she is older than Twilight (I think) and has a job and is working towards her dream
Fluttershy: I agree here. About the same age as Rainbow Dash since they were at flight school together. If anything I'd say older than Rainbow but not by more than a year.
Pinkie Pie: 15-17. If I remember correctly it's because Fluttershy said that she was older than Pinkie Pie.
Applejack: 17-20. Runs a farm well. Knows how to run a business. One of the most mature of the group.
Rarity: I think about the same age as Applejack if not a little younger. She also knows how to run a business and moved out of her parents home, but for all her posh and sophistication, it's just a facade.
CMC: Maybe 4-6 between the three of them.
For the most part, I agree with your reasons, but I believe that they are younger than you think because I am at least a little bit knowledgeable of equine psychology and physiology, and I believe that they are different than humans in terms of things like puberty. After all, a horse is able to walk almost as soon as it's born, so I figure facts like that into my little head canon to make educated guesses of their ages. This is entirely my opinion though, and I don't want to start any comment wars. I think you're reasoning is good though PH.
Sounds just about right, but I think a little tweaking is in order. So tell me what you think as well:
Twilight: 14-19 because she is a prodigy. So basically she is accelerated in her studies which makes her younger than she looks or acts. And ever since Season 2 ep 25-26, she was around 6-7 when she took her entrance exam.
Rainbow Dash: give her a 20-24. She is nearly out of her teens mentality. So her social maturity goes to borderline highschooler to college undergrad.
Fluttershy: +1 to Rainbow Dash's age bracket. It is a solid fact that we know that Flutttershy is a year older than Pinkie and RD. She is held back a grade which is understandable.
Pinkie Pie: same age bracket with Dash. Aside from the same social maturity,
Applejack: I give her a good solid 25-27.
Rarity:
"never ask a lady her age!" so that places her in the safe zone of 19-34. But considering that she moved out he parents home and it is implied that she knows Applejack and Fluttershy for a long time, I would place her closer to 26.
I agree with the CMC.
All in all, this is just based if the ponies of Equestria have the same lifespan as humans. And considering their we can base everyone elses' age with this would make for a good math exercise.

My entire world of fiction which I write revolves the characters basically being/acting human but are actually Ponies.

If you mean the Rarity part, well there is some speculation. But Twilight won't mind, I can just chalk up that variation to "Learning with Pinkie Pie"
And with Pinkie, you can always get away from logic and reasoning. Which makes me wonder if she is really younger than she appears to be....oh well.
