Cody G (Blunderbolt) actually entertained the idea of writing his grimdark idea today.

[5:45:14 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Twilight became a Princess and vanishes from the public eye.
[5:45:41 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Luna and Celestia say that she's acting as an ambassador for Equestria, and nobody questions it.
[5:46:09 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Then, Applejack becomes an Alicorn Princess.
[5:46:13 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Then Rarity.
[5:46:18 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Then Fluttershy.
[5:46:21 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): And Pinkie.
[5:46:47 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): One by one, all the mane six become princesses and disappear from the public eye.
[5:47:16 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Problem is, none of them are responding to the letters that their friends are sending.
[5:47:44 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): They haven't heard from or even seen anypony who's become a Princess since their coronation.
[5:48:26 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Spike starts to grow suspicious and shares his worries with Rainbow Dash and the CMC, who blow him off as paranoid.
[5:48:47 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Until Rainbow realizes that she hasn't gotten a letter from Twilight in almost a year.
[5:50:02 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Low and behold, Rainbow recieves a letter from Celestia, announcing that she's been chosen to become an alicorn princess and her coronation will be held at Canterlot in a few days.
[5:50:18 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Rainbow, Spike and the CMC all go to Canterlot.
[5:51:01 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Spike starts snooping around, but nopony helps him until Rainbow Dash disappears in the dead of night, just after her coronation.
[5:52:03 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Worried, but sent home by the Princesses, Spike talks the CMC into staying at Twilight's parents' house and sneaking into the castle, where they find an enormous underground complex.
[5:53:03 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Turns out, Luna and Celestia relied on the Elements of Harmony to stay immortal. Without them, they began aging again.
[5:54:04 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): They wanted them back, but since the Elements are a part of the ponies they represent, the only way to get them back is direct transfer—only attainable through alicorn-to-alicorn magic, and which will kill the giver.
[5:54:39 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): They devised a plan to turn each of the elements into alicorns to kill them and steal their power back.
[5:55:24 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): As Spike and the CMC investigate the complex, they run into a brainwashed Discord, who was in charge of guarding it and who chases them.
[5:55:37 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): They wind up getting seperated.
[5:56:13 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Spike manages to survive by hiding in a ventilation shaft for the night, but is still stuck in the complex.
[5:57:00 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): As he searches for the CMC, he finds a dissected Scootaloo and a Sweetie Belle who fell into a boobie trap.
[5:57:27 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Eventually, he finds the main chamber where all of the mane six are being held in stasis pods.
[5:58:33 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Luna and Celestia are there, finishing up the process and getting ready to sacrifice Apple Bloom who's blood will serve as the delivery method for the energy from the Elements.
[5:58:52 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Spike tries to stop them, but he's too late and Apple Bloom dies.
[5:59:54 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): Raging, he turns into giant Spike from the birthday episode and fuking destroys everything, including the Princesses. In his fit of rage, his mind snaps and he winds up bringing the whole complex down, causing the castle to collapse.
[6:00:22 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): He survives, but when the guards show up, he's the only thing that's alive and he's still spitting fire.
[6:00:47 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): All the evidence is buried under tons of stone that can never be dug up and the princesses are dead.
[6:01:33 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): He's tried as Equestria's greatest traitor and locked in a stone prison for all time, still very much insane from the ordeal.
[6:01:36 PM] Cody G (Blunderbolt): The end.

This actually sounds like it could be a very interesting story.
I actually really like this idea, but then, that's why I grimdark.
