Celestia Sleeps In--Chapter 7 notes and thanks · 2:49am Mar 16th, 2013

Reference notes in Chapter 7

I am indebted to my pre-readers.
Humanist
My parents
Woonsocket Wrench
My brother, who’s a flight test engineer and pilot—he fixed all the aviation parts. It was pretty much a correction every line. He has no idea what this story is about.

From the description of the calendar (and an earlier reference in the story) it is possible to deduce exactly what year this story takes place.

The first ‘wagon’ is a ’57 Chevy half-ton pickup. The second is a ’40 Chevy half-ton pickup.

Horses are colorblind, but they’re not horses; they’re ponies.

Jennifer’s plane’s tail number (N-number) is the same as the plane that Mythbusters shot chickens at.

I was unable to get a copy of Fun With Dick and Jane from the library—there’s a bazillion holds on it.

Satisficing is a real word, even though the spellchecker thinks it isn’t.

The inspiration for the marbles and box came from Latin Via Ovid.

Lt. Calley is—well, look it up. I remembered the name from the song, not the controversy.

The Asmiov story Dale remembers is “The Billiard Ball.”

The “astronomy” book Dale uses is Stars and Planets. There is a second shot of the astronauts on the moon, driving through Hadley Rille, but it’s not obvious on first glance, and Dale probably missed it (I did until I was getting specific details from the book for the chapter).

Gray’s Anatomy is about the size of Pumpkin Cake, I’d think, and likely weighs more. I’m not sure it would fit in Lyra’s saddlebags, even if they were empty. Unless they were Saddlebags of Holding, which is something Pinkie Pie probably has.

Yes, I know Minneapolis Center would be handling flights once they got more than 5 miles out from Traverse City. The story’s simpler this way.

EDIT: Also--are any of my readers in the Coast Guard on the Great Lakes (or anywhere else)? If so, what are the normal ranks of a CG crew in a patrol boat--the 41' boats and the 25' inflatable-looking boats--and how many people are usually in them? That's the one bloody thing I haven't been able to find an answer for yet . . . I may call Coast Guard human resources and see what (if anything) the'll tell me...

I know you said that we could figure out what year this is taking place in, but I am either too tired or too stupid to figure it out.
