Chapter 1: The New Spell

Twilight yawned as she got up from bed, ready to start the day! She quickly got washed up, and ate some Breakfast before going back up the stairs to the library.

"Good morning Twilight. Did you enjoy breakfast?" Spike asked as he walked up to the pony.

"Good morning Spike. Yes, breakfast was delicious. Thank you," Twilight replied before going over to the window and looking outside.

"What are you looking at?" the baby dragon asked, feeling confused. Twilight turned around and smiled.

"Princess Celestia said she's going to send me a new spell that I get to try! She's been hinting at it for the last two weeks, and I can't wait any longer! Eeeeeeeeeeeee!" Twilight happily exclaimed, before jumping up and down, and giving Spike a hug. Spike hugged back.

"Glad you're excited, Twilight. But you probably should just wait until the spell arrives. Celestia would probably want to take her time making sure you're prepared before sending it. Try focusing on other tasks before then," Spike suggested after separating from the hug.

"Of course! You totally make a good point, Spike. I was planning on doing other projects until the spell arrived anyways. Besides, I'm not worried! Princess Celestia trusts me, and I know she won't let me down when it comes to giving me a new spell! All we have to do is wait," the purple unicorn responded with confidence. Her assistant nodded.

"Good to know! Now, let's continue on that - OH! FFFFWWWOOOOOOOSSSSSSSHHHHH!!!" Spike said, before burping out a blast of green flames! The flames vanished, and a letter appeared.

"That must be it!" Twilight said before grabbing the scroll with her magic.

"Wow! That was fast! What does it say?" Spike asked, also excited by the new assignment. The unicorn unraveled the parchment using her magic, and read it out loud. It read:

Dear Twilight Sparkle, my faithful student,

I have recovered this spell from an old collection of archieves found deep in The Castle of the Two Sisters. Luna has been very generous to go back there, and gather scrolls from our old home as fillies. Although this spell is old, I have never come across one like this in my years of study. Heck, even Luna herself has no idea what it is! This spell is a total mystery.

While looking through this spell even more, I have tested it with magic on various objects, and found some rather ... unusual results. I have also worked on counter-spells in case the results go disasterous, but be warned that I have not been able to find a clear, full-proof spell to fix this spell's results. Read with caution.

To use the spell, stand in front of a mirror, say the spell with correct pronunciation, and let your magic do the rest. But again, do it with caution.

Furthermore, this spell is in no native language I know of. If anything, it is definitely not old Ponish. Take a look to see what the language might be, or if it is similar to any in existence.

I wish you the best of luck, and please be careful when using the spell. Let me know what your findings are, and alert me to any help you may need.

Your truely,

Princess Celestia

"Wow. This spell seems both interesting, and dangerous! Let's look at the language first!" Twilight stated before looking carefully at the spell. She only read it silently, and saw just how confusing it was.

"I wonder if there's a secret way to read it?" Twilight wondered out loud, putting the paper in front of the mirror. She flipped it so the spell was reflecting in the mirror. Nope, didn't work. Nor did reading the spell upside down, or in any lights like ulta-violet. Twilight even applied invisible ink using magic, and nothing showed up. It was just a spell, horn written in gibberish!

"Spike, can you please get me those foreign language books from the top shelves? I want to compare those languages to the spell before doing anything else. Just as Celestia instructed," Twilight asked politely.

"Of course!" Spike replied before climbing up the ladder to get the books. Twilight grabbed the lower level language books with her magic.

"Here you go Twilight!" Spike said, carrying at last four or five books in his claws.

"Thank you Spike. Just set them on the floor over by the orange book," Twilight replied, pointing to where she wanted the books. Spike did as he was told. After organizing the books alphabetically, the purple unicorn looked through every Equestrian language.

"Nope. No! Uh- no! Negative! No way! Nope!" Twilight said as she looked at the books of language, comparing the words and such to the spell Celestia sent. Absolutely nothing looked or sounded anything like the spell. In fact the only thing that sounded the closest was Latin. But that was for only a few words.

"Any luck Twilight? You've been looking for hours!" Spike asked as he and the unicorn took a break to eat lunch.

"Not really, Spike. I found a few words in the spell that are similar to Latin, but other than that, I found nothing," Twilight replied before taking a bite of her sandwhich. The pair continued eatting lunch, until they decided to take a walk, hang out, and then go back to the spell.

"And ... Done! Okay, let's do this!" Twilight said after putting the books away.

"I'm guessing no luck?" Spike asked, looking up from his comic book.

"None. Still, I have all the information I need to do the spell! Stand back, Spike!" Twilight said cautiously. Twilight trotted to the mirror, spell floating within her magic grasp, and her horn glowing.

"Okay. Here it goes. In hoc carmine ego præcipio corpus meum transibit ... " Twilight began as she carefully read the spell.

It started out good, but quickly started to sound scary!

"A caninis germinare faciam patitur potestatem in me ...

Soon, Spike not only got scared, but heard something that didn't sound good. Where did he hear that word before though?

"Nam et artes quae intra limites praestante Domino poteritis adipisci, ut me devinctum officiis ...

Now Spike was concerned.

"Twilight, you may want to stop ..." he said, but just got ignored.

"Et accipere hoc munus ...

"Twilight! Wait! Don't-" Spike was about to say, but was too late.

"Amodo et deinceps accipere fatum meum ...

"NO! Twilight! What are you-?" Spike said until he got blinded.

SSSSPPPPRRRRRRRRR - BOOOOOOOM! The spell had been completed.

"Twilight?!" Spike called out as the light faded. Suddenly, he looked at the spot where his friend had been, and gasped.

"TWILIGHT?!" was all he could say. What did she just do?!

Chapter 2: Twilight the Puppy

Twilight coughed a little before looking at the baby dragon. She had no idea what had occured.

"I'm okay, Spike. Just didn't expect the spell to be that strong, and happen so quickly. Anyways, let's - why are you looking at me like that?" Twilight said to her assistant. Spike was looking at her like she had a different appearance or something.

"Look in the mirror," was all the dragon could say as he pointed towards the reflective object. Twilight did as she was suggested, and got the shock of her life!

"AHHHHHHHHHH! NO! What? What the -? W-Why am I -?" was all the purple creature could say, as Twilight quickly gazed into her reflection, not as a pony, but as a puppy. Twilight was stunted.

Her fur was the same purple color as her pony coat had been. Her eyes the same color, but the top of her head and tail still remained the same shades of light, and dark purple with a stream of pink. The only difference was her tail was more fluffy and dog-like, and what used to be her mane was a bunch of colored fur going off to the sides and down the back of her neck. Her body posture was similar to a Husky, German Shepard or both of those mixed with a little of Winona's body type. Appropriate, but she was still the same size as she was before. Her ears were even furry, her muzzle had grown to a snout with a black nose, correct canine jaws, and a much stronger sense of smell. Finally, instead of hooves, she had thinner legs, and paws.

"I'm a - a - a - a - a PUPPY?! What?! Why? Why would Princess Celestia do this to me? Why didn't she warn me?!" Twilight exclaimed, now pacing and whining at the same time.

"Twilight, you need to calm down-" Spike said until the purple puppy faced him

"Calm down?! HOW can I calm down, when I just turned myself into a - Bark! Bark! Bark! - PUPPY?! Oh no! Did I just - Bark! - Ahhhh! Oh my gosh Spike! I'm so sorry! I don't know why I did that!" Twilight exclaimed, her words mixed with the sound of a barking puppy.

"Twilight, it's okay! We'll figure this out. Besides, Celestia may have warned you, but I'm sure the spell is suppose to help you learn something. I'm sure you'll - " the baby dragon replied until he saw something that scared him stiff.

"What? Spike, did I scare you?" Puppy Twilight retorted with concern. Spike shook his head.

"No. But uh, your forehead -" Spike said, scared of how she would react.

"What about my-" Twilight said, touched her forehead. It was then she realized the terrible truth. Being a puppy meant no horn. No horn equaled no magic, and with no magic, she couldn't change back.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" Twilight screamed as she cried into her paws, burying her face. Her cries and whines, made Spike feel terrible for his friend. Even he started crying.

"Twilight!" Spike said, running to the purple puppy, gently embracing her, sharing in her pain.

"Thanks for understanding Spike," Twilight managed to say between tears. After a minute or two of crying out their sad emotions, Spike and Twilight separated from the hug.

"Spike, what are we going to do?! I've never had to handle a situation like this! And neither has Princess Luna or Celestia!" Twilight commented. She didn't want to fail Celestia, but being a dog was totally new! Spike thought hard as he paced. He did this for a while, then stopped.

"I got an idea, but you won't like it," the baby dragon told her. Twilight leaned on all fours away from Spike, nervously.

"I won't like it, how?" the puppy questioned him. The purple and green dragon took a deep breath then explained.

"Okay. I was thinking taking you to Fluttershy's place. But I also realized you will need an all pet checkup. So I think the checkup should be first," Spike retorted.

"NO! No, no, no, no, no!" Twilight exclaimed, knowing exactly what her little friend meant.

"Come on, Twilight! At least you'll be healthy, then we can go to Fluttershy's cottage. I promise!" Spike replied. Twilight moaned.

"No! I do not need a checkup! I do not have fleas or ticks! And I CERTAINLY don't need to get - oh yeah, surgery so I don't have kids! What if the spell gets fixed and I want fillies, Spike?! Hmmmmmm? I am not having that happen to me!" Twilight retorted, clearly not happy.

"It's just a simple checkup! I'm sure you'll be fine! Hold on, let me get the leash, and then we can go!" Spike said before turning around. Twilight's puppy eyes widened.

"'A LEASH'?! No! Nah-uh! No way! Absolutely not! I refuse to be tagged along like a suitcase tied to a rope! NO!" Twilight exclaimed, wanting nothing to do with the new activity presented to her.

"It's a requirement for all dogs to be on a leash! You can't argue with that!" Spike responded from downstairs, as he looked through boxes for a leash. Twilight groaned with disinterest. Suddenly, she heard a voice.

"Being on a leash isn't so bad. You do it to me all the time!" a soft, yet soothing, mature voice said out of the blue.

"Who said that?!" Twilight asked until she turned in the direction of the sound. Owlicious was on his perch, staring at her.

"Was that you, Owlicious?" the puppy Twilight asked.

"Of course. Who else would it be? Anyways, I can't believe that spell turned you into a puppy!" the owl spoke to her in the same voice she had heard before.

"How is it possible for me to hear you? I only heard you hoot as a pony," Twilight asked her pet.

"Ponies may be animals, but they are more socially engulfed by life, friends, and everyday matters, that they don't take the time to study the natural ways of the animal world or try to get in tuned with it! Only fact and knowledge. That is why you can hear me now," Owlicious replied matter-of-factly.

"Have I been nice to you? Have I neglected you? Is there any way I can be a good pet owner?" Twilight asked, concerned she was a terrible owner.

"You are a good owner, Twilight. Though giving me more variety in my diet, having fun, or giving me something to help with would be appreciated. Even flying out more would help," Owlicious responded.

"I'm sorry Owlicious. I promise to do all those requests with you when I return to normal," Twilight promised her feathered friend.

"Twilight! I FOUND THE LEASH!" Spike shouted from downstairs. Twilight whined. She really didn't want to go to the Ponyville Vet for a checkup! Then after looking at some random objects, and Owlicious, she got an idea, and raced into action.

"Twilight! I got that purple leash we had in the- Twilight?" Spike said, looking everywhere for his furry friend. Nothing. Just the usual bedroom. Bed, lamp, tons of books, experiments Twilight was doing, Owlicious was a little bigger, a shelf, - wait, what?!

Spike looked at Owlicious, who had grown quite a bit since he last helped take care of him. However, upon closer look, it wasn't Owlicious who had grown, but a puppy Twilight, covered in a set of brown and tan blankets, her tail trying to look flat, her legs and paws wrapped in the blankets trying to form wings. The blanket texture trying to look like feathers - and failing, ears folded back, and to top it all off, an owl mask over her face, as puppy Twilight tried to stand on a make-shift T pole made for the feathery pet. It was cute, but she failed to convince him.

"Whoooo?" Twilight said in her best owl impression.

Chapter 3: Pony Vet and Plan B

"Twilight, come on!" Spike said, grabbing the "owl" puppy and taking her off the stand. The blankets and mask fell off, revealing the purple puppy.

"No! Spike, I don't need a checkup!" Twilight said, trying to get away from the dragon, but his grip was strong.

"Considering you are a new dog in Equestria? Yes you do! It's required that all new dogs get a checkup. So technically you are a new dog!" Spike retorted. Suddenly, he got an idea.

"Wait! What if I put you in a pet carrior, we do the checkup, you get back in the carrior, we come back and then go to Fluttershy's cottage?" Spike suggested. Twilight thought about it, and decided it wasn't a bad idea.

"Alright, let's go!" Twilight responded. She may not have liked the idea of getting a checkup, but Spike's plan was a good one. She carefully got into the carrior, and let Spike close it before covering it up with a blanket.

"Just stay quiet, and let me do the talking. We don't want to raise suspicion," Spike told Twilight before he picked up the pet carrior. Puppy Twilight could hear Spike groan as he carried the carrior, which made sense since Twilight was the same size as a pony, just a different species.

After what felt like an hour - more like thirty minutes actually - they were at the vet. Spike filled out the paperwork while Twilight waited. It was so boring! What made things worse for Twilight though, was all the pet smells she could now sense. All the dogs she was interested to know about, cat smells she wanted to get rid of, or tell the cats to stay away, the awkward bird smells, curious smells of the building. It was just too much!

"Spike! We're ready!" a vet pony said from a door on the side of the room.

"Thank you," Spike replied befpre picking up the carrior and taking himself snd Twilight into the vet room.

"Greetings Spike, I'm Doctor Aqua. How can I help you? I heard you had a dog?" the vet asked curiously. She was a light blue pony with a white mane and tail. Drops of water for a cutie mark.

"Yes. Hold on," Spike said before taking the blanket off, and opening the carrior's door. Puppy Twilight came out nervously, but she knew what to do.

"Up!" commanded the vet pony, patting her hoof on the bed/stand. Puppy Twilight obeyed, and sat on the stand. The vet pony then examined her.

"Let's see. Fur is in good condition," Doctor Aqua said before looking further at the fur, and tail.

"No fleas or ticks," the vet reported. She then looked at Twilight's ears, nose, mouth, eyes, and paws.

"Ears are clean. Eyes are good, nose looks good. Mouth and teeth are healthy. Paws are good," Doctor Aqua said before moving to the tail for a closer look.

"Tail is good. Overall, this is a very healthy dog. Well done Spike. But where did you find it? Never seen a dog like this before!" Doctor Aqua commented.

"Oh! That's because Twilight found a puppy and we were practicing magic, but the spell backfired and hit the puppy. So we wanted to make sure it was okay!" Spike explained.

'At least that's mostly truthful,' Puppy Twilight thought after Spike answered.

"Okay puppy! You can go in your carrior now," Doctor Aqua said, and Puppy Twilight obeyed. She carefully jumped off the stand, and walked into her carrior. Spike closed the carrior door and put the blanket over it.

"Thank you so much Doctor Aqua. Just curious, how did you get that name?" Spike replied kindly.

"I use to work at an aquarium. And you're welcome," the vet pony responded.

Spike then went to the front desk, paid for the appointment, then walk outside, and back to the treehouse library. Upon entering it, Spike put the pet carrior down, closed the front door, removed the blanket from the carrior, and opened the little door. Twilight walked out of the carrior and stretched.

"Well, that was a waste of time! We went to the Vet, only to find out that - even as a puppy - I am still healthy! It's no wonder pets hate going to the Vet's place! All that body checking is SO uncomfortable, and it feels like a major violation of personal space! Still, better safe than sorry," Twilight commented after she stretched her legs and body.

"Well it's still good to know you're healthy! Right now, we have to head over to Fluttershy's cottage!" Spike said as he put the carrior away, and grabbing the purple leash again.

"Ah, Spike! I don't think we have that kind of time! Look!" Twilight commented, pointing to both the sun, and clock on the wall. Spike looked, and his jaw dropped! It was four o' clock in the afternoon already?! Plus the sun was going down? Wow, that Vet check used up more time than he thought!

"Ah man! Well, how about we send Celestia a letter and just hang out?" Spike suggested, feeling that their time was getting used up.

"Perfect! But we probably should send the letter later since we still need to figure out what else we need to do tonight. Also, we will need to figure out what to eat for dinner. Let me look up dinner options. I think we can make this work!" Twilight said before running up the stairs. She quickly looked through her book shelves for a certain book she had gotten as a gift from Fluttershy once, and found it. It was a book about pet diets. After looking carefully through the book, Twilight knew what to do.

"Spike! I got it!" Twilight said as she ran back down the stairs to her assistant. Spike had been putting the leash away.

"Yes Twilight? What did you find?" Spike asked curiously.

"According to a pet book I got from Fluttershy, it turns out certain dog foods have the same ingredients ponies eat. Carrots, nuts, greens, and other stuff. Some dogs sometimes even get ham or peanut butter as treats. I think if we combine those ingredients, we should be good for dinner. Like peanut butter, ham and carrot patties, with greens and nuts on the side! I know it sounds strange, but I believe it will work!" Twilight exclaimed with glee.

"That sounds great, Twilight! I'll go buy the food and cook. You just stay here, and have fun. But be carefull and whatever you do, don't go outside! Understand?" Spike replied, making the last sentence a serious one.

"I understand, Spike. You go ahead and shop! I'll stay here with my books," Twilight responded. Spike smiled, wrote down a list of the ingredients, then walked out of the library, and locked the door.

"I probably should do more puppy reasearch! If I'm going to be a puppy, I'll need to know as much as I can!" Twilight said before running up the stairs again.

Spike smiled as he walked from the library treehouse towards the food stands. He was only going to be gone for a few hours. What could go wrong?

Chapter 4: Distractions

Puppy Twilight rushed up to her library, and searched for every book she could find! She ended up finding several books, but only four or so went into great detail.

"Okay. Out of all the books I found, these four seem to be the most helpful. Those being 'Dogs and Ponies: How to Live With Your Canine', 'The Ins and Outs of Dogs', 'Dog Behaviors: Normal, Abmormal, and How to Be Healthy, and finally 'Dog Care: Training, Health, Concerns, and Husbandry'. I think I'll start with the first book, since Fluttershy gave me it," Twilight told herself. She started to flip through the book, and read it.

"Okay. It says dogs have many different skills and personalities. They are protective of family and friends, and some dogs can be more friendly then others. Health is important, like the teeth being clean, a well groomed fur coat, and overall hygiene. In addition, dominance must be shown to the dog so they know who is boss. Certain chores must be done too, like playing with the puppy, feeding, giving water to drink, cleaning up after them, and giving them attention. Well all of that makes sense! What else does it say?" Twilight said, as she read the information in the book.

"It also says puppies can get easily distracted, will go after random objects that are in their territory, and even get into mischief because they are either chasing something, curiousity, or as they are doing something fun. Hmmmm. Well, hopefully that won't happen to me - Wait! What's that I hear?" Twilight said as she read the book, only to be distracted.

Outside, ponies were trotting about as they passed the Golden Oak library, minding their own business. However, for puppy Twilight, it was annoying. Normally, ponies passing by wouldn't be a problem, but having ponies -even ones she knew when she was a pony - pass by her library, without her permission, invading her territory was just too much! Puppy Twilight snapped.

"HEY YOU! YES YOU! GET OUT OF MY SIGHT! STAY AWAY FROM MY LIBRARY! THIS IS MY HOME! MINE! MY YARD, MY LIBRARY, AND MY SAFE PLACE! GET OUT! GET OFF MY LAWN, AND STAY AWAY FROM MY HOME! ... I KNOW YOU'RE STILL THERE! DIDN'T YOU HEAR WHAT I SAID?!" Twilight exclaimed in a combination of stress, urgency, frustration, and willingness to protect her home.

Lyra Heartstrings, and Bon Bon stood confused outside the library as they gazed up at the upper balcony, as a sudden, and intense amount of barking could be heard. They didn't know Twilight got a dog! Or maybe she was dog sitting for somepony. Still, it was quite the surprise. They then carefully, and quickly ran off.

"YEAH, YOU BETTER RUN! LEAVE! AND STAY AWAY UNLESS I SAY OTHERWISE!" Twilight shouted, not knowing her words were nothing more then barks to other ponies. Puppy Twilight sighed as the "strange ponies" went away. Boy being a puppy was stressful! Wait! Oh no! Not now! Not another intruder! This time, she knew what was outside.

"SQUIRREL! SQUIRREL! LEAVE! GO AWAY! STOP CHATTERING! GET OUT OF MY LIBRARY!" Twilight shouted, again her words being heard as barks outside. The squirrels fleed as the barks came, until they were away from the big tree.

"Finally! No more intruders!" Twilight said, before going downstairs to get a drink of water. Good thing Spike had left a water bowl before leaving. After she finished drinking, Twilight went back upstairs and looked for something to play with.

"I know we had some dog toys up hear somewhere," Twilight told herself as she looked through the toys in the closet. It was filled with Spike's comic books, random objects, and such, but no dog toys in sight. Suddenly, a box of toys opened, and a red squeaky bone fell out of it. The squeaky toy landed right in front of Twilight's front paws.

"Hmmm?" Twilight said, before poking the toy with her paws. A high, playful squeak came from the toy. Twilight's eyes beamed with joy, and her ears perked up. She loved it! Twilight hit the squeaky bone with her paw again, but this time, a bit harder!

Squeak! came the noise from the rubber bone as it got gently pushed by Twilight's paw, flew into the air, then bounced gently on the floor, squeaking as it bounced. Twilight gasped, and smiled with joy! This squeaky toy could bounce too?!

Twilight was jubilant over how much fun this new toy would be for her. It was no surprise why dogs loved these toys! This time however, she decided on a more interesting challenge. What if the toy squeaked and bounced while Twilight chased it? An interesting, and fun challenge indeed! Puppy Twilight gladly accepted the challenge! Twilight hit the red squeaky bone with her right paw, and watched it bounce and squeak, while flying throughout the room! It hit the wall - now the table - now the bed leg - now the wall again! Twilight watched carefully, but excitedly as the toy bounced all over her room. Twilight jumped, trying to whack the toy with her paws more, missing each time.

Luckily, Twilight had placed a magical shield around her newest projects so nothing would damage the test tubes, liquids, or other objects that she would need later on. She of course did this when she was a pony, to prevent any nighttime mishaps. The toy bounced off the shield every time it looked like a book or test tube would be knocked over, which was good. The red squeaky bone then bounced onto Twilight's bed, stopping on top of the covers.

'Now I have you!' puppy Twilight thought as she got into a pouncing position, aiming for the bed. She was like a wolf as it focused on a rabbit a foot away. A red, rubber, squeaky rabbit that was really a chew toy, but same idea. She waited for her moment, then using her back legs, pushed off the floor, flying towards her bed!

"Gottcha!" Twilight said as she flew onto her bed covers, using her paws to try and catch the rubber bone. Within seconds, her paws missed, her speed was faster than she thought, and instead of the toy being grabbed by her jaw and paws, her covers filled her grasp with soft, long, linen, as she grabbed them, fell to the other side of the bed, and sent the squeaky toy flying! The red bone toy bounced off the walls again, this time accidentally hitting the light switch before bouncing to a hault.

"AHHHHHHHHH!!!" screamed Twilight as she fell to the ground, her bed sheets falling right on top of her. Twilight got up, but as she did, the purple puppy quickly realized that she was now completely covered up in her sheets. Not only that, but it was dark in the room.

"Ahhhh! Ahhhhhhhh!! Help! Oh! Grrrr! Help! Who turned out the lights?!" Twilight exclaimed, as she tried her best to get out of her bed sheet, getting tangled up more with every attempt. While she struggled however, she didn't notice the red rubber toy in front of her.

Squeak! squeaked the toy as the sheet-covered puppy accidentally stepped on it with her linen paws.

"Ahhhhhh! What was that?!" Twilight cried out, now spooked by whatever had touched her paw. After a minute, she stood still, then moved forward. Another squeak! came from her paws. The squeaky toy!

"Aha! Now I got you!" Twilight said, feeling for the toy with her sheet covered paws, before pouncing on it! It was finally hers! Twilight pressed on the toy with her paws, but also tried to get it in her mouth. Problem was, being stuck under a bed sheet can make getting a toy in your mouth a lot harder.

Eventually, after having enough of the troublesome toy, she carefully balanced it on her sheet-covered snout, and stumbled over to the closet where she found the box of dog items and dropped it in.

"Good! Toy is put away. Now to get out of my bed sheets! Grrr! Get off of me! Ooooohhhh! Ah! Ahhh ahhhh ahhh! Oooohhhh! Help! Help! I can't see anything!" puppy Twilight cried out, flailing about, looking like a ghost puppy rather than a puppy playing games. Suddenly, the front door opened.
