The Greatest Day

View Online

A new day breaks over the skies of Equestria as Celestia, alicorn princess of the sun, does her duty, raising the glowing yellow ball of fire into the sky with her magic.

Further away, in a hollowed out tree that was much bigger on the inside than anypony would ever think possible, lived a purple unicorn by the name of Twilight Sparkle. As she felt the warm rays of the sun touch her face, she slowly awakened to the familiar sight of her room. She sat up and looked around, smiling as she laid eyes upon the purple and green scaled dragon that was her assistant, spike.

Despite being a mythical creature of fire breathing destruction, he was rather harmless, and preferred reading and napping to causing terror and mayhem. He was also rather small and cute looking.

Twilight Sparkle got up and out of bed, wiping the sleep from her eyes as she did...whatever it was ponies considered the daily routine.

She then woke spike, her faithful and loyal friend who she herself personally hatched from an egg as a filly, who in turn rubbed his eyes, and rose from the small straw-woven basket that was his bed. He hadn't gotten more than a leg out of the thing before tripping on a stack of old comic books that were strewn all over the floor around his bed.

Twilight gave a slight chuckle at the sight before wrapping him in a purple veil of magic and levitating him over to her. "Good morning, Spike." Twilight said as her friend shook himself free of the confusion that was now present on his face.

"Good morning, Twilight." Spike said as he walked beside her.

The duo walked down the stairs from Twilight's room. These stairs led to the lower floor of her tree home, where a library filled to the brim with books sat waiting for them.

The purple unicorn picked a random book from the shelf and sat in front of her desk, a wooden platform that sat directly in the center of her home.

She opened it up and began reading, smiling happily and giggling away while doing it. The book, like most books on her many bookshelves, was about magic.

Being a unicorn, Twilight of course knew about magic, but she was a special exception to the rule, as she knew much more magic, and much more about it, than most.

She was in the middle of reading a particularly lengthy chapter when she was snapped out of her trance by a single sentence.

"Uhh...Twilight? I think we're out of crystals." The voice belonged to spike. He was rummaging through a pile of old books, comics and potion bottles, looking for his favorite snacks.

"Did you check the fridge?" Twilight said, too distracted by her book to pay him any real attention.

"We don't have a fridge." Spike answered back, still searching.

"Oh, that's right," -Twilight closed her book and stretched, shaking the tiny bit of sleep left in her system away.- "we don't."

Twilight began walking over to her companion, smiling her usual happy smile at him as she said, "Well, let's go. We don't want you cranky because you haven't had your morning snacks."

Spike looked up at her in mock indignation, shaking his clawed fist at her. "Hey!"

A Friendly Visit

Twilight Sparkle walked along the path towards the ponyville market, spike following close behind her.

She carried with her an empty saddlebag and a pouch full of bits for her to make the oh so important purchase her assistant had pleaded with her to go out and make.

She giggled as she remembered how the dragon dropped to his knees and begged her to go out and buy his precious crystals.

"Hey! I do not get cranky!" Spike had said as he shook his fist in defiance at Twilight.

She simply smirked and said, "Well, if you really think you can handle going one morning without your snacks, then I won't go and buy them."

Spike's eyes widened at the mare's words. Surely she wouldn't deny him his precious crystals. He needed those snacks to get enough energy to make it through the day. "N-n-n-no, wait. Wait!"

Twilight looked at him, a smirk still present on her face. "Yes, Spike?"

"I...i need them." He said in an almost inaudible whisper.

"I'm sorry, what was that?" Twilight asked, teasing the dragon just a little bit.

"I said I need them!" Spike yelled as he blushed furiously from embarrassment.

Twilight's smile only grew as she looked him over. "Well, if it really means that much to you, then I guess i'll have to buy them for you."

Spike was on his knees as he kissed his teacher's/friend's/mother's hooves. "Oh thank you Twilight! Thank you!"

As she recalled the memory, Twilight noticed that as she walked into town, a lot of ponies were waving at her. She waved back, a bit confused as to why everypony was being so friendly all of a sudden. she hadn't done anything to warrant their attention had she? At least, nothing she knew of.

As she wondered about the odd levels of attention she was receiving from everypony, she made her way to a stall, having now entered the market.

"What can I get you today?" A crystal seller pony said as she smiled at her newest customer for the day.

Twilight looked carefully over each of the crystals trying to decide which one would be best to buy for Spike. Spike himself just stared at the crystals through the glass, drooling like a mad dragon. He wanted them all.

Twilight had to pull him away and place him on her back to stop him from wetting the glass with his saliva. "I'll take...that one." She said, pointing at a small yet bright red crystal.

Spike stopped drooling for a moment when he laid eyes upon the jewel Twilight had picked out. Then he spotted another one out of the corner of his eye. One that looked just as delicious, if not more so, than that one. "Oh oh oh! That one too! Get that one too, Twilight!"

Twilight looked over at the dragon to see that he was pointing at yet another crystal. "What is it spike? You want another crystal?" Spike shook his head. "Well alright, but only if I can afford it."

Suddenly the shop owner pulled both the jewels out as a happy grin spread across her face. "No matter dear," she said, placing them both on the counter. "i'll give you both of them for the price of one. A two for one deal, just for you."

Twilight looked at the crystal seller in disbelief. "Really? You'd do that?"

"Yep. Just for you. Plus, your dragon looks like he's about to faint from either happiness or hunger already!"

twilight looked up at Spike, who indeed, looked a little too excited. "Alright spike, you can have them both."

Spike nearly jumped out of his skin at this. "Really? Really I can?"

Twilight only chuckled. "Yes, you can, Spike"

Spike pumped his fist with a whispered "yes!" and in a few moments they were off again.

Twilight thought it would be a good idea to pay their friends a surprise visit while they were out. She thought it would only be right for them to do that.

The two made their way over to Sweet Apple Acres to visit their friend Apple Jack. Once there, Twilight gave a slow knock on the door to the barn where her best friend lived. The door opened slowly, revealing not Apple Jack, but Apple Bloom, Apple Jack's little sister.

"Hello! Who's there?" Apple Bloom's southern accent, a trait shared by all members of the apple family, called from inside the doorway.

"Hi Apple Bloom! Where's Apple Jack? Is she not in right now?" Twilight greeted the earth pony filly with a barrage of questions that made her head spin with confusion.

"Uhh....he he. Um...ughh..."

"Oh um...sorry Apple Bloom. I guess I kinda confused you with all my questions, didn't I?" Twilight apologized a look of slight concern on her face for the filly.

"yeah, ya kinda did..." After collecting her thoughts, Apple Bloom spoke again. "She's not in the barn. She's outside buckin' apples in the orchard."

"Oh I see." Twilight said, a bit disappointed that she couldn't see her friend just yet. "I had been looking forward to visiting her, but if she's busy, I can always come back later." She started to walk off until she heard Apple Bloom's voice call out from behind her.

"Ya know, if ya really wanna see her, why don't ya stay here and wait for her on the farm?"

Twilight turned around, looking at apple bloom with a happy expression. "That's a great idea, Apple Bloom. I'd love to."

Twilight, followed closely by spike, made her way into the barn, the pride and joy of the Apple family.

Filled with the literal fruits of years and years of hard labor, this place was the cornerstone of the Apple family way of life.

It was run well by Granny Smith, who sold her family's famous apple cider, and yet ever more famous zap apple jam. It was managed by Apple Jack and Big Macintosh, two siblings who helped out at the farm on a regular basis every day.

Apple Bloom, the youngest of the family, was not yet old enough to help out around the farm, so she just kind of, watched and learned.

Twilight sat inside the barn with Apple Bloom, discussing things like how they were feeling, and how their week has been, with Apple Bloom, as usual, talking about her club, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, or CMC, which she led with the help of her two best friends, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo, and Twilight talking of her recent deal struck out of nowhere with an extremely kind shop owner.

As they talked, all the while Apple Bloom laughing at the part of Twilight's tale about Spike crying and begging her to buy him crystals, much to the embarrassment of the very sensitive dragon, Apple jack was making her way back to the farm. After bucking all of the trees on the east side of her orchard, she had gotten tired and finally decided to call it a day.

She stepped inside the barn and was greeted with a sight she had not expected to see. There, sitting on a bail of hay with her sister, was her best friend, Twilight Sparkle, accompanied by spike, of all people. She went over to speak to them.

"Well, howdy Twilight! Mornin', Spike, Apple Bloom!"

Twilight stopped her conversation with Apple Bloom, having long since finished her tale, and decided to let her get the laughter out of her system, at spike's expense, as she talked with Apple Jack.

The only response from spike was a slight wave in her direction.

"Hi Apple Jack! Apple Bloom and I were just talking."

"What were ya'll talkin' about?" Apple Jack said, now curious as to what the two of them could possibly have to talk about. "And what's his problem?"

"Oh he's just grumpy that I told Apple Bloom about how he begged and pleaded for me to buy him a crystal. It's nothing. Nothing at all!" Twilight waved it off as something trivial. "Just like what we talked about."

"Now ya'lll know how I am about secrets." Apple Jack teased her friend.

"Oh fine. I was just telling her about this great deal I got from a nice crystal shop owner in the market today." twilight resigned to her friend's teasing manner.

"Is that all? Why'd ya feel the need to hide that?" Apple Jack asked, legitimately confused.

"I also got waved at by everyone in ponyville as I walked to the market today." Twilight said nervously. "I wasn't hiding it. I just...didn't consider it important enough to tell you. That's all."

"Gettin' a good mornin' from the ponies of ponyville ain't nothin' new. Why would ya be so startled by somethin' as simple as that?" Apple Jack asked, even more confused now.

"I know I shouldn't but, it wasn't just one or two ponies. It was everyone." Twilight said, putting her muzzle to the ground in shame at her lack of social understanding.

"Maybe they were just feelin' neighborly today?" Apple Jack asked.

"Maybe..." Twilight responded, not lifting her muzzle.

"Whad'ya mean not important enough? Not important enough? Now ya'll listen here, sugar cube.-Apple Jack placed a hoof to her heart and smiled at Twilight, placing a hoof on her shoulder.- "Anythin', and I mean anythin', is important enough for ya'll to tell me. I want to hear about how yer day's been, or how yer feelin'. I want to hear it all. I mean, that's what friends are for, right?"

Twilight was shocked at this. To believe her friend was so interested in her life to the point where she wanted to hear things that she would consider small or inconsequential. It made her very happy.

"Now, let's see if we can give ya an even better deal." Apple Jack said as she walked out of the barn, stopping at the door.

"What do you mean Apple Jack?" Now it was twilight's turn to be confused

"I mean that if ya went out to buy Spike food, then that means that ya probably haven't eaten yerself. Granny Smith and i'll fix ya'll up somethin' nice and tasty for breakfast. Now Ya'll just sit outside and wait." Apple Jack walked out of the barn with a smile.

Twilight was taken aback by this. Not only had she been greeted by everypony she made eye contact with today, but she had been given a deal she didn't deserve and was now about to receive a meal she didn't deserve either. She knew it shouldn't, but it made her feel...bad. Here she was doing absolutely nothing while her friends and even people she didn't know did all these amazing things for her. It made her feel like she wasn't doing enough for her friends.

She pushed the thought aside, opting to feel bad about it later rather than spoil the breakfast Apple Jack was about to make.

She sat down at the table and awaited her food. A while after she did, Apple Jack and Granny Smith came out with the plates. As she looked at the food present on hers and her hosts' plates, her stomach rumbled.

"Looks like you were hungry. Go ahead and eat. I have a bit of something I need to do." Apple Jack said, pointing at the food.

"Oh no. Apple Jack, I couldn't. Not while-"

Apple Jack cut her off mid sentence. "Eat. Go on. I don't mind one bit."

Twilight nervously picked up the fork using her magic. "Well, if you insist..."

She began eating and Apple Jack soon came back and joined her, along with the rest of the Apple family, in a happy breakfast for all of them.

After saying their goodbyes, Twilight and Spike, full from the breakfast they just had, left and went to visit Rarity.

The Dress

View Online

Once they get to Rarity's, Twilight gives a soft knock on the door. After a few moments, the door opens revealing Rarity in all her glory.

Spike is drooling once again, but this time it's not because he's hungry.

"Hi Rarity. How are you doing today?" Twilight says as Rarity steps aside to let her in.

"Why i'm doing just wonderful darling! If I may ask, why the sudden visit?" Rarity asks, genuinely confused as to why her friend would suddenly show up at her door like this.

"Oh no reason! I'm just here to pay a visit to a friend." Twilight says politely

"Oh! I see. Well thank you so much darling. I appreciate you coming by to visit. " -Rarity stares intently at a sowing machine as she pushes fabric through it.- "Since you're here, would you mind helping me out?"

Twilight gets off of the couch she had sat on when she had first got here. "Sure! What is it Rarity?"

Rarity pushes Twilight into the center of the room and leaves, returning with a dress enveloped in her magic. "Could you try this dress on for me? I need a model for my dresses and since you're here I thought you could do it."

"Sure, Rarity. Of course i'll help." Twilight said, a bit taken aback by the sudden action.

"Oh thank you darling. Now, try this on." Rarity shoved a dress into twilight's hooves as she said this.

What followed was a flurry of work, cloth, and dresses. So much so in fact, that Twilight eventually lost track of time. Spike simply took a nap, and was in the middle of a very pleasant dream. When they finally managed to leave, they were sent off with a happy goodbye and a "Thanks for your help, darling. It means so much to me that you came for a visit." from Rarity.

As they trotted away from Rarity's home, Twilight looked up to the sky, only to realize that it was quite dark out.

"I must have been trying on dresses for quite a while. Just look at how dark it is!" She lifted a hoof to the sky, gesturing to the setting sun over the horizon.

"Yeah, it is pretty dark out. How long do you think it's been?" Spike said, yawning.

"I don't know..." Twilight said in response to the dragon's offhanded question.

She decided that she would go rest at home. All the stress from Rarity's dresses and the boredom that came along with it, as well as the uneasy feeling she's been having all day from wondering about her friends strangely generous behavior, has made her tired.

Just as she was about to leave to her home, followed closely by spike, she was stopped by Rarity, who had trotted up beside her without her knowing.

"Twilight, wait!" Twilight froze at the sound of Rarity's voice in her ear. She relaxed, however, when she looked in the direction the sound had come from and saw Rarity.

"Oh it's just you. You...scared me there...for a second..." Twilight said she tried to catch her breath. Once she did, she straightened and looked at her friend. "What is it, Rarity?"

The unicorn fashionista had a worried look on her face as she said, "Oh dear, um...sorry for scaring you. It's just that um...well, I have this for you..." -Rarity pulled a beautiful dress out of a bag that she had brought with her.- "Here take it. I want you to have it."

Twilight looked at her friend like she had just slapped her in the face.

"Well, what's wrong, darling? Do you not like the dress?"

Rarity flinched as Twilight teared up and began to cry, sitting down on her haunches and covering her eyes with her hooves.

"Well now! I know you don't like the dress but-" Twilight cut her off mid sentence.

"That's not it!" She said through tears and sniffles.

"Then just what is the matter, dearest? I can't help you if you don't tell me." Rarity said, looking even more worried now.

Twilight sniffled, wiping the tears form her eyes as she got back up onto her hooves. "It's...it's just that...You've all been doing such wonderful things for me today, and i've done nothing to repay you for your kindness."

Rarity looked confused at this. "Just what are you talking about dear? All of us? The only one I know who gave you anything today is me."

Twilight spoke in a tone that told Rarity she had been holding this back for the whole day.

"Ever since I woke up this morning, people have been being so kind to me. First the whole town of ponyville is waving at me, and i've been getting greetings from ponies I don't even know. Then Apple Jack offers to make me breakfast, and now you're giving me this dress. I feel like i'm taking advantage of all of you, because I haven't done anything in return."

Rarity looks at her friend. "Well, that's what friends are for ri-" Twilight cuts her off again.

"I got greeted by ponies I don't even know, Rarity! ...I don't deserve such kindness. Not when I've done nothing to earn it."

Rarity watched her conflicted friend for the longest time. Then, she wrapped her hooves around her neck and said, "You do deserve it."

Twilight opened her eyes, which had been closed as she continued to cry silently, tears streaming onto the ground. She looked at her friend. "I do?"

"Yep!" She heard spike say, as he patted her back reassuringly.

Twilight laughed. "Thanks, Spike."

Rarity pulled back, her hooves still present on her fellow unicorn's shoulders. "You do. Everyone else in ponyville knows it as well. You deserve all the happiness you get. You are an amazing pony twilight. and if anyone knows it, it's me."

"T-thank you, Rarity...that....means a lot to me. More than you know." Twilight stood up, righting herself as she wiped her eyes, no longer feeling the urge to cry.

"You're welcome!" Rarity said, smiling. "Now go on home and get some rest. You need it."

"I will." -Twilight began trotting back home.- "Thanks again!"

Suddenly, she was stopped by Rarity again. As she wondered what her best friend could want now, Rarity said, "Oh, and, Twilight?"

"Yes, Rarity?" Now it was Twilight's turn to be confused.

"Make sure to try the dress on when you get home, okay?"

Twilight rolled her eyes. "Of course, Rarity."

Twilight and Spike made their way home, the day finally over.

Surprise

View Online

Twilight took some time to rest in her room, and then, just as Rarity had asked her to, she tried on the dress. It was a simple dress, which was surprising considering the designer mare's flare for all things fashion.

The dress was purple and pink, to match her mane, with a white trim to go with her cutie mark. It was a simple one piece dress. No frills, no faux fur, no glaring accessories. Just, a dress. The only thing remotely flashy was the sequence fabric that the dress was made from. It shone with little sparkles every time she moved.

Twilight thought it was a nice touch. True Rarity style.

She decided to wear the dress around for a bit, leaving her room to walk around the house as she got used to the feel of the dress.

Before she walked downstairs however, she noticed that Spike was nowhere to be found. She assumed he had gone downstairs and decided to look for him there. But, when she came down, he was not there either.

"Now where did that sneaky little dragon go?" She said as she walked around the library. She looked around for a bit more before she decided to go back upstairs. "Well, he'll come back up when he's ready, I guess."

It was then that she realized. There was one last place that she hadn't checked. The closet. She chided herself for not thinking to check the most obvious place.

She went over to the closet and opened the door, and what she saw, made her chuckle a bit.

In the closet was Spike, tied up, his hands and feet bound tightly behind his back, surrounded by a bunch of furry forest animals.

"Uhh...a little help here, Twilight?" Spike said as he struggled against his bindings.

"What are you doing in here, Spike?" Twilight said as she helped him out of the ropes and things that had held him down.

"I don't know. One minute I was by your side and then...the next I was in here. I don't know what happened."

"Hmm, strange." Twilight said, putting a hoof to her chin. "Oh well, guess we'll never figure that one out. What were forest creatures doing in here anyways?"

Suddenly she heard a soft voice from behind her. "Um...they're mine."

Twilight turned around to see Fluttershy standing behind her.

"What? Fluttershy what are you-"

The lights clicked on.

"Surprise!!"

Suddenly she saw everyone in her house. All her friends were there, and even people she didn't think would be here. Big Mac, Granny Smith, Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo, Shining Armor...

Wait. Shining Armor?

She made her way towards her brother. When she got close enough, she stopped in front of him.

"Shining Armor, what are you doing here?"

"I came to see my little sister Twily. What's wrong with that?" Shining said.

"But, aren't you supposed to be guarding the Crystal Empire?" Twilight asked, confused.

"It's perfectly fine over there. So, since it was so peaceful, we decided to take a little time of our own." Shining Armor said, smiling.

"Wait. We?" Twilight responded, her face scrunched in eve further confusion.

"Yep. Cadence is here, too."

"Here I am! Did someone call me?" Twilight heard a voice to the left of her. She turned and sure enough, there was Cadence, walking up to the two of them with a box in her teeth.

"We sure did, sweetie." Shining said to Cadence, the two touching their noses together.

Twilight was still confused. "But what event would be important enough to warrant a sudden vacation?!"

Shining Armor sighed happily "Think about it, Twily. What day is today?"

Twilight thought for a moment. "um...Tuesday?"

Suddenly Pinkie Pie burst out from behind Shining Armor and said, "No, silly! Well, yes, but it's also...Your -She pulled a cake out of seemingly nowhere, typical Pinkie Pie style, and placed it in front of Twilight.- birthday!"

Twilight had to step back to get her bearings. She couldn't believe it. All that time her friends spent doing all those amazing things for her, and it was all for her birthday.

She felt tears threaten to overtake her again, as her body heaved and shuddered. But these were not tears of shame or regret or sadness. These were tears...of joy.

"This is...This is all so...I can't tell you how happy I am to-" She was cut off by a voice to her right.

"Whoa there darlin'! Don't start the water works until after the day is done."

She looked to her right and saw...

"Apple Jack?! You're here too?"

"Yep. Sure am. Wouldn't have missed it for the world."

Twilight was speechless.

When she finally found her voice, she said, "B-but how did you all know?"

"Shining Armor told us." Another voice form nowhere. Or at least nowhere she could see. She looked around again.

"I'm up here." The voice said again.

Twilight looked up and saw none other than Rainbow Dash, floating right above her head.

"Wow. For a pony who can find her way around in the dark, you sure can't see very well." Rainbow joked.

"Quiet, Rainbow! She's still takin' it all in." Apple Jack chided.

"Well how long does she need?" Rainbow said, getting impatient with her nerdy friend.

Apple Jack spoke up. "Anyway, she's right. It was Shining Armor who told us all about it."

"Shining Armor did?"

"Yep! He sure did. When I heard it was your birthday, I practically forced him to take me along with him." Cadence said, answering her question.

"Emphasis on forced..." Shining Armor said, laughing with the rest of her friends.

"Then he told everyone in town about it!" Pinkie Pie screamed happily.

Twilight thought about that. "Is that why everypony in town was greeting me?"

"Indeed. We even told Princess Celestia about it!" Rarity said, joining the group.

"What? does that mean?" Twilght asked, shocked that the princess would come to her birthday party.

"Yes." Fluttershy said, smiling.

Twilight said nothing else as she made her way around her home, looking for the alicorn princess. She found her in the very back sipping punch.

"Princess Celestia!"

Celestia Turned her head toward the sound, seeing her student. "Ah! Twilight! Where have you been? I've been looking for you everywhere."

"You're here too, princess?" Twilight asked, shocked.

"Yes, I am. When I heard it was my most precious student's birthday, I couldn't just sit by and do nothing. Sadly, however, I did not bring any gifts to give you."

"No princess. your presence is gift enough." Twilight said, bowing.

The princess giggled. "Is that so? Very well then. I suppose I will just take my gift and put it away then."

Twilight looked up at her in shock. Had she said something to offend her? "Oh no princess, please don't! If I have offended you in any way-"

"I'm only kidding Twilight. Here you are. I was told Rarity got you a dress, correct?"

"Yes, that is correct." Twilight said, wondering how she knew that. Rarity must have told her when she got here.

"Well then here. A pendant. It should match your dress perfectly."

"Oh wow, princess. It's beautiful!"

"It is. I picked it out just for you. Just for today."

"Oh thank you so much princess! I'll treasure it for as long as I live." Twilight said excitedly, holding the pendant to her breast.

"I am glad to hear it. Happy birthday, Twilight."

"Thank you again princess. This just means so much to me."

"Well then, take good care of it." Celestia said as she turned and walked away.

"I will! I promise!" Twilight shouted as she returned to her friends.

"So did'ya find the princess, Twilight?" Apple Jack said as she saw her coming back.

"Yes I did! She gave me this!" Twilight showed her friends the gift Celestia had given her.

"That there's a mighty fine piece o' jewelry." Apple Jack said, admiring it.

"I know! Isn't it great?" Twilight exclaimed

"It sure is." Fluttershy said, admiring it as well.

Then, a thought occurred to her. Celestia said that Rarity had gotten her the dress as a present.

Twilight excused herself and made her way towards her room. She closed the door and looked around for the bag the dress had come in. When she found it, she looked inside and saw an envelope addressed to her. She pulled it out, opened it up and read the contents of the letter inside.

"Hello darling. If you're reading this it means that you did what I told you. Well, either that or you're reading it later, after you've realized that it was your gift. Anyway, I made this dress to show you how much I love you and appreciate all that you do. The others have something they want to say as well, so my part ends here, but, know that we'll be friends forever in my book.

"Howdy, sugar cube. I just wanted to say that we all love you and hope you're havin' a great party.

"Um..Hi, Twilight. I just wanted to say that um... I hope we continue to be friends for a long, long time. Angel Wants to say something, but if I let im we won;t have enough space for the other's. sorry...

"HI Twilight! Like Fluttershy said, I want us to be friends forever! Forever and ever and ever and ever!

"Hey, Twilight. You know i'm not good with uhh...emotions and all that mushy stuff...ugh, so not cool. I want us to keep hanging out like always, and continue being friends. The best of friends."

-Love, All of your friends

Happy Birthday, Twilight.

As she read the letter, her eyes teared up further and further as she thought of the effort her friends went to to give her a great birthday. She would have burst out crying again for the second time that day, if not for a knock at her door.

"Oh right, my friends." She made her way towards the door and opened it to see Fluttershy there.

"Are you alright, Twilight?" Fluttershy asked.

"Yes I am. Why?"

"Well, see, it's just that, the others are worried. you've been up here for a while now."

"Oh is that all? I'll be down in a moment."

"Okay then. I'll go tell them." Fluttershy said as she left the room.

Twilight came downstairs after wiping her eyes. She saw that everyone was sitting outside her door, most likely waiting on her to return.

She came down the stairs and looked at everyone. The room was completely quiet, waiting for her to say whatever it was the birthday mare was going to say.

She took a deep breath and said, "Let's Party!"

What followed was a party of epic proportions. Presents were opened, cake was eaten, and Confetti was shot from cannons. It was the greatest birthday ever, and it wasn't over yet.

The Greatest Birthday.

By the time everyone had eaten and had their fun, it was truly dark out. Everyone sat outside watching the stars in the sky.

As they watched the stars, six mares thought about the day they had just had.

"This was the best day ever..." Pinkie Pie said, full and happily rubbing her belly, cake icing lining her mouth.

"You said it, Pinkie..." said Rainbow, who was in much the same condition Pinkie was.

"I haven't had that much fun since the running of the leaves!" Apple Jack exclaimed, tipping her hat up.

"Quite an enjoyable evening indeed." Rarity said, watching the stars, her hoof on Apple Jack's shoulder.

"Yeah. It was a lot of fun." Fluttershy said softly.

"You know the best part about it?" Twilight said to all her friends.

"What would that be, darling?" Rarity asked, wondering what could be better than the party they just had.

"I got to spend it with all of you." Twilight responded.

This made everyone tear up a bit.

"Aw, shucks, Twilight...that means a lot." Apple Jack said, wiping tears from her face.

"So!-" pinkie Blew her nose on a handkerchief that came out of nowhere. "-beatiful!"

"Thank you so much dear. We're glad to hear you say that." Rarity said through sniffles.

"Yeah. Thank you twilight." Fluttershy, who had been trying not to cry, buried her face into her tail and sobbed.

"S-shut up! You know I can't handle mushy stuff...i-i'm too....cool for...crying!" Rainbow Dash wiped her eyes to keep from shedding tears at the heartfelt comment.

Everyone converged near Twilight, forming a circle. Suddenly, Rainbow Dash had an idea.

"Hey, Twilight! Wanna see somethin' that'll make this day even better?"

"Now what could that be, Rainbow?" Twilight asked, confused.

"I still haven't given you a present right?" Rainbow said.

"Yes, that's right. What-" She was cut off by Rainbow.

"Wait here." Rainbow said as she left ad soon returned with a cloud. "Watch this."

Everyone watched Rainbow dash as she flew into and around the cloud, reforming it and shaping it as she went. When she was done, she flew back down and landed on the ground near twilight.

"Look up there." She said, pointing to the sky.

Everyone looked and saw the cloud. Rainbow dash had shaped it into Twilight's cutie mark.

"Wow! Oh thank you Rainbow!" Twilight said as she hugged Rainbow, who gently pushed her away.

"Whoa Whoa Whoa. I don't do hugs." Rainbow said sternly.

"Oh right, sorry." Twilight apologized

Everyone came close and squeezed each other tight in a big group hug. Everyone except Rainbow.

"well, maybe just this once." Rainbow said as she joined the circle, hugging her friends.

"I love you all." Twilight said, smiling and looking around at her friends. She couldn't have asked for a better day.

This truly was, the greatest...birthday...ever.
