Ness and Twilight communicate through the use of the journals they got in Magicant.
This story is a minor side story that takes place after beating Midnight Sparkle in Magicant. Twilight and Ness use their new journals to talk to one another about various topics.
'Four years ago, a far off country named America was invaded by an alien named Giegue. From what I heard, a man named George stole vital information on PSI from him, and so Giegue attacked Earth and started abducting people. However a twelve year old boy named Ninten, who happened to be the grandson of George and his wife Maria, managed to calm Giegue down with a lullaby that Maria used to sing to him. A few months later, Ninten and his girlfriend, Ana came to my hometown of Onett here in Eagleland. My parents and I were shopping in town square with my little sister when Ninten arrived in town. He walked right up to me and told me that he saw something special about me. I assumed at the time that he saw my innate ability to use PSI, I could tell that he could use it, too, but I now think that he saw that I was one of the four meant to finish what he started. He told me something about Giegue that only he and two of his friends knew. He told me that Giegue had promised that he would return one day, and that Ninten would be his first target. He gave me the cap on his head as a memento. I have worn that hat every day for over five years. I can only hope that Ninten is still alive. He visits periodically, but it's been months since his last visit.'
'I'm sure that Ninten's alive, Ness.'
'But the alien already returned. I defeated him just before my thirteenth birthday. I just can't stop thinking about what he told me, about how Giegue would destroy him first.'
'Oh.'
'Ninten will be eighteen this year, that's if he's still alive.'
'Why don't you try contacting him. Let him know you were worried about him because Giegue returned.'
'I did a few months ago. I just hope that he didn't hurt him. I'll let you know if I get a response from him.'
'Hello? I'm sorry, but I don't recognize your handwriting. How'd you get Twilight's journal?'
'Sorry about that, Ness. Sunset noticed me writing in here. She realized what this was and wanted to know who you were.'
'Hello, Sunset. I know it's not much of an introduction, but my name is Ness. I helped Twilight when she went to deal with Midnight Sparkle back at Camp Everfree. It's a long story, but Twilight ended up in a place called Magicant when she fought Midnight. I helped protect her as we looked for Midnight.'
'You helped Twilight? She was only asleep for five minutes.'
'In the real world. But she was in Magicant for over five hours. We got attacked once, and I protected her. She actually got this journal in Magicant, and I got mine there as well. I know that this is a lot to take in all at once, but I gave Twilight a few other mementos like her Franklin Badge. She can show it to you if she wants to.'
'Franklin Badge? That sound like something from that video game that Pinkie Pie plays every once in a while.'
'It wouldn't perhaps be called EarthBound, would it?'
'Ness? I know it's late, but please wake up. I need to ask you about something'
'Twilight? What's so important that it couldn't wait? It's two in the morning.'
'That's just the thing. I'm at Pinkie's house having a slumber party, and I don't want anyone else finding out about the journal yet, so I had to wait for the others to fall asleep.'
'Okay, that would make sense. So what do you want to talk about?'
'Pinkie was playing this game called Super Smash Bros on her Wii U with Rainbow and Applejack. Pinkie was playing as a character that looked and sounded just like you. He even had the same name as you.'
Ness doesn't respond.
'Ness?'
'Pray tell, was either Rainbow or Applejack playing as a hedgehog named Sonic?'
'Yes. Rainbow was playing as Sonic.'
'Twilight, it's time that I tell you the truth. I live in a different universe than yours.'
'So you're a pony like Sunset?'
'No, I'm a human. My home universe is home to all video game characters, and it appears to be separate from both your universe AND from Equestria. That's why I'm having my friend Jeff and his dad see if they could build a portal, you know, so that I can visit you and your friends. Knowing Jeff, he's probably working on the portal right now.'
'Wait, you're a video game character?'
'Yes. That's why I asked you to thank Pinkie for me. She played my game, and Paula's prayers being answer was the only way to defeat the Cosmic Destroyer, Giygas.'
'Oh, well that explains a lot. Thanks for clearing things up, Ness.'
'You're welcome, Twilight. But I think it's time to get back to bed. We've been talking for half an hour. And I had a long day of sparing with my fellow video game characters.'
'Hey, Twilight! I'd like you to meet an old friend friend of mine. His name is Lucas.'
'Hello, Lucas.'
'H-hello T-twil-light.'
'What's wrong?'
"Lucas can be a little timid, and sad. It doesn't help much that he saw two of his family members die before his very eyes.'
'WHAT!'
'Lucas was ten when his mother died, and his brother Claus died of a lightning attack that was reflected off of his Franklin Badge.'
'Oh.'
'I hadn't see Lucas for years. He and a bunch of people traveled to a far off place called the Nowhere Isles when Giegue attacked America. He showed up here in Onett an hour ago with some friends and we decided to catch up. After I told him about our journey and the journals, he wanted to write you and see what you were like.'
'Oh, well, Lucas, I'm a very smart person. I used to spend all of my time studying before I discovered the wonders of friendship. Now I spend most of my time with my friends.'
'Th-that sounds nice.'
'And you sound like a male version of Fluttershy.'
'F-fluttershy?'
'She's a very shy and quiet girl. You almost can't hear her most of the time.'
'Th-that does sound a lot like m-me. It was a pleasure to meet you, even if it wasn't in person, but Ness promised to introduce me to the rest of his friends and I don't want to keep him waiting.'
'Alright Lucas. It was a pleasure to meet you. Goodbye, Ness. Goodbye, Lucas.'
'I just got a letter back from Ninten. He's ALIVE!'
'That's great, Ness.'
'He's getting married.'
'WHAT!'
'He's marrying his girlfriend Ana at the end of the month. He's invited me and Lucas to come to the wedding in Podunk, and we're allowed to bring one guest each. Lucas is bringing Kumatora, I'm bringing Paula, and Jeff's letting me borrow a video camera so I can record the event. If you want, I can show you the footage when I visit again.'
'Did he say anything about, well, you know.'
'He told me he was sorry about making me worry. I told him I was worried because of Giegue having returned and the threat he made. He said he was sorry for making me worry. He's just been busy with the wedding plans. And he sent me a gift, too. The ocarina that he got in his grandmother's Magicant.'
'That's nice. Maybe you can play it when you visit us again.'
'Hey Ness. Pinkie Pie wanted us to learn to play a song from your series so she brought a ton of sheet music with her today. We settled upon "Smiles and Tears", the song you sang when we were in Magicant. I remembered there we're lyrics, so Pinkie looked it up, and she eventually found them on a site called WikiBound. I was shocked to find out that the lyrics were originally in Japanese, and then got another surprise when Fluttershy started reading the Japanese lyrics with out any difficulty. I never knew she could read and speak Japanese. I was impressed, as was everyone else, especially Rainbow. She actually wants Fluttershy to do the lyrics when we perform that song.'
'Wait, Fluttershy speaks Japanese?'
'Apparently so.'
'Could you go get her, please? I'd like to talk to her.'
A few moments pass before Fluttershy's handwriting appears in Ness's journal.
'Wh-what is it, N-ness?'
'だから私はあなたが日本語を話す聞きます。' (So I hear you speak Japanese.)
'私は何が、どのようにあなたはそれを知っていますか？' (I do, but how do you know that?)
'Twilight told me about you singing the Japanese lyrics to "Smiles and Tears".'
'She told you about that?'
'Yep. Don't be shy about it. It gives me someone I can talk Japanese to when I visit.'
'How do you now how to speak Japanese?'
'My franchise has only had one physical English release, Fluttershy, so my series was mainly considered a Japanese exclusive until recently.'
'Oh. I forgot about the Mother series's troubles with English localization.'
'Yep. Tell you what. Next time I visit, I'll bring Jeff with me. The kids a genius when it comes to all things electrical. Maybe he could build or set up some recording equipment for the Rainbooms.'
'You'd do that?'
'Yep, I'd do anything for my friends.'
'Really? Because I'm sure Rainbow would your friend for life.'
'Ness? Something's happened. Does the name Giygas mean anything to you?'
There's no response.
'Ness? You there?'
'How'd you find out about him?'
'The girls and I have been having these recurring nightmares regarding an evil abomination named Giygas. He arrives through the portal and lays waste to the town. Sunset messaged Princess Twilight about it, but she doesn't know what it means. So I thought I should ask you.'
'Twilight, I'm sorry. I've been having dreams about Giygas, too. I fear that it means that he's returning.'
'Sorry, returning?'
'Remember Giegue? When Giegue returned, he used the name Giygas. The fact that the seven of you have all been having the same dream is upsetting. I think it means that he's going to target your world instead of mine. I'm sorry, Twilight. Let me know if things get worse, I'll let my friends know so that we can be prepared if he attacks.'
'Thank you, Ness. I hope that it won't come to that.'
