Chapter 1 - Nightfall in Equestria, part 1/2

View Online

It was nighttime in Equestria, in a field filled with nothing else but rocks and small creatures. A pony - more specifically, a unicorn - was walking through the mist.

The unicorn was a stallion with a dark blue coat, blue eyes, and a blue mane. His cutie mark was a rather rare one, a moon - just like the one the younger princess has. He couldn't control the moon, most likely because he wasn't an alicorn and didn't possess the magic one has.

As he walked through the mist, he saw a dark figure standing in the distance. As much as he could see, it was staring at him.

“Uhh... Hello?” the stallion asked hesitantly.

But no response came from the dark figure. The unicorn decided to go towards it - not that he really wanted to, it was creepy and strange, but he had to do it because he didn't have the slightest idea where he was. As he walked towards the mysterious figure, he started seeing it more clearly. And without a doubt, he could say it was a mare pegasus. Unfortunately, as he took a step forward, the pony took a step backward.

"I mean no harm," the unicorn said as he took another step towards the pegasus, but as he had expected, the pony didn't listen to him, and took another step backwards.

“Please, I just want to talk with you,” the unicorn said in a rather desperate way.

The mare got scared and took two steps backwards, followed by the stallion making two steps towards her.

“STAY AWAY!” the mare shouted, confusing the unicorn.

With a fast spring of her wings, she took off the ground and launched herself in the distance, fading away.

“Uhh... did I say something wrong?” the unicorn mumbled to himself.

“You don't belong here” a mare voice came behind the stallion, making him turn as fast as he could to see the source of the voice, but there was nothing else than rocks and mist as far as he could see.

“Is anypony out there?” the unicorn asked in confusion, as he looked left and right to see if he missed anything but unfortunately he didn't see anything out of place.

Suddenly a shadow passed really fast in his field of view, leaving a rather odd trail while startling the stallion.

“Enough games, SHOW YOURSELF!” the pony shouted towards the place he saw the shadow.

Suddenly, a chill was sent down his spine as he felt a heavy breathing in the back of his neck. The unicorn gulped as he turned slowly, just to see a rather tall dark blue coated unicorn mare with light blue eyes and dark blue mane standing right in front of him.

“What's the matter, are you scared?” the mare said while a creepy grin went through her face.

The pony scoffed. "Please, why should I be scared by you?" the pony said as courageous as he could, not realizing his legs were shaking in fear.

“Well...” the mare said, getting closer to his face.

“Well... what?” the unicorn asked in fear.

“Well if you knew what I would do to you it’s most likely that you would be scared,” the mare threatened him, while the stallion only answered.

“You don’t want to mess with me, I mean business." The mare could barely hold her laughter as she closed the distance between them.

“Oh really?” she said while grinning once again.

“Back off,” the stallion warned her as he took a few steps backward "I’m an expert in destructive magic." he exclaimed while gaining some courage from boasting himself.

“Oh we have a tough one" the mare said while letting a small laugh “We will see about that destructive magic of yours".

The stallion took a step backwards giving him some space to focus as he shouted, “LAST WARNING”.

“Bring it on” the mare said fully confident in herself, taking a few steps backwards and sitting on the ground while taunting the stallion with a hoof.

"You asked for it!" the unicorn said, while taking another step back. He leaned forward, gathering all of his powers and aiming for the wicked mare, and channeled a powerful destructive spell.

Twirling the air around him was a mystical blue aura matching the color of his eyes. It started surrounding him as he blinked. He shot a powerful spell from his horn, heading towards the mare's direction.

Apparently the mare didn't want to dodge it, and stood still while her mane and tail flipped furiously. With a grin on her face, she took the magic blast, and a huge shockwave and loud blast resonated from her, forcing the stallion to jump behind a nearby rock in order to avoid any damage.

As the noise died down and the dust faded away, the unicorn took a step out of his cover. He only saw a huge hole in the ground. You really overdid himself, he thought. Eager to see the so-confident mare, he took a peek in the hole to see there wasn’t even a trace from her. Giving a confused look towards the hole, he inquired,

“Wasn’t there supposed to be uhh... I don’t know blood?” The confused stallion took a step back as a huge shadow was cast over him. He looked towards the source gasping while seeing the mare flying.

“This can’t be... HOW ARE YOU ALIVE?” the stallion shouted addressing the flying mare, which giggled in response.

STOP IT WITH THE CREEPY GIGGLING!” the stallion shouted at the mare. Suddenly her giggle was swapped with rather devilish looking grin. As her horn started glowing with dark blue color, a mysterious aura took the stallion lifting him up in the air.

LET GO OF ME!” The unicorn shouted as he was pulled towards the mare by her magic.

“Oh, but we though you would like a nice display of magic?” saying the last part with a threatening tone.

“I don’t get it. How are you still alive? The spell I casted was sure to kill anypony.”

The stallion asked confused, while still being held by the magical grip of the wicked mare.

“A regular pony, maybe yes, but a princess... I guess you found that already”.

On second look, he did see that she had both wings and horn that only met she was an alicorn. On closer look not just any alicorn, but it was... “PRINCESS LUNA!” he shouted.

“Not exactly, my little pony.” she said with rather annoyed tone.

The stallion looked at her again, exclaiming “I’m sure you are Luna“.

With a rather frustrated look on her face, she threw the unicorn towards the ground. “GAH” the stallion shouted as he hit the ground face first.

“You will see who we are soon”, the mare said, looking down while her horn started glowing blue again. This time it looked like a destructive spell. This was unfortunate

He shook his head to take away the dizziness he had from the fall. While doing so, he saw the dark figure of the pegasus pony standing a fair distance away, looking straight into him once again. He took a deep breath before standing up, ignoring the dark figure, looking at the alicorn which currently was still flying into the air.

“If you think I will give up without a fight you are in a big mistake”, the stallion challenged, while the mare responded one more time with a creepy grin. What was with that pony and her grinning?

Charging her magic spell, she leaned towards the unicorn. He also aimed for her. Sure, he couldn't outmatch an alicorn's magic, but he had to try - it was in self-defense, after all.

The alicorn shot a powerful beam of magic towards the stallion. He blocked it with a spell shield. The spell's aura faded away. He stepped back and shot a counter-spell towards the princess. She returned fire by shooting a ball of energy. It traveled right through, and thus canceled the unicorn's spell.

It headed right towards the stallion. Quickly, he jumped aside, barely dogging the spell. It left a hole in the ground.

She sure was an worthy opponent.

Breathing heavily, the unicorn charged his strongest spell. A blue aura surrounded him. He shot a powerful laser-like spell. It headed for the alicorn at top speed.

Without hesitation the mare shot a laser-like spell too, matching the stallions spell. It even pushed it back towards him slightly.

He realized that he can't survive this if he doesn't put every single drop of magic he had in that spell. He bit his lower lip and closed his eyes tightly. He charged his spell to its limits. Unfortunately, so did the princess. This kept the magic field in the center of the impact.

It was pushing towards him. He knew that this was the end.

He closed his eyes.

The spell reached his horn.

Suddenly everything went black.

As time went, the stallion opened his eyes slightly just to see that he was in somehow different place, which was all black as far as one's eye could go.

“Am I alive?” the pony exclaimed, looking down to his hooves. He was fine without a scratch. But how is that even possible, he thought to himself.

“Wake up.” A gentle mare voice said.

“Hmm... is there anypony out there?” He did a full spin around him, looking everywhere, but there wasn’t anything.

“Wake up,” the voice said again.

“Am I... asleep?” that was the most logical thing that could have happened, but he wasn't yet fully sure in it. As he walked through the darkness, he heard the voice a few more times, coming from different directions each time.

After walking for what seemed to be all eternity, he came across an odd looking mare.

“Umm... hello?” he asked gently, not like the last time he had scared away the pegasus.

The pony had no reaction, the stallion waved a hoof in front of the pony's eyes, but no reaction came from her. It was like she was frozen. She had golden coat, golden eyes, golden mane with yellow stripes, and a cutie mark of a pile of golden dust with sparks around it. Well... that pony sure loved gold, the stallion thought to himself.

He ignored the pony and continued walking forward, realizing it was sure a dream. As he walked, the voice kept on saying the same thing.

“Wake up... Wake up... Wake up - ”

I WOULD IF I KNEW HOW!” the unicorn shouted in the distance. The annoying voice stopped telling him. Suddenly he fell through the floor screaming both in fear and panic.

“AAAAAHHHHH! SOMEPONY! ANYPONY! HELP ME!”he screamed while falling down through the seemingly bottomless pit.

He hit the ground so hard that everything went black.

The stallion opened his suddenly, falling off his bed hitting the floor face first jumping in panic so hard, hitting himself on the ceiling then falling over one chair then on the ground again with a loud series of noises. He decided to stay put for a moment, to regain his physical strength.

“Ooouch” he exclaimed in pain from the trip he just had. After regaining his strength, he opened his eyes to see he was at home as far as he could say. The room was simple - it had one bed, a window, few chairs next to an workbench with lots of books, a bookshelf with even more books on top of another bookshelf filled to the top with books.

The stallion took a deep breath before he heard a filly's voice coming out from downstairs. Apparently he was upstairs.

“Dad... are you alright?” Also apparently he was a father.

“I’m fine... I just had some morning workout.” The door on the side of his room opened, revealing a pegasus filly, a dark yellow coated mare with blue eyes and an yellow mane with a blue stripe going through it. She didn't have a cutie mark.

“Hey dad what are you doing laying on the floor?” the filly curiously asked her father,

he only replied with “Just chilling" with a rather exhausted tone.

“Ook... mom send me to invite you for breakfast,” the filly said enthusiastically waiting for her father to reply

“Ok sweetie, I’m coming in a second” the little filly, happy from her fathers's answer went downstairs, where apparently her mother was. “What a dream” the stallion mumbled to himself, “I'd better get going now, I don’t want to keep them waiting.” He closed the door and went downstairs.

Downstairs was a fairly big living room with a circular table in the middle and some chairs and a couch around it. There were of course more bookshelves filled with books. There were also few windows and a big clock slowly ticking left and right. Also there were two door's one leading to outside and one leading towards the kitchen where he was heading towards.

As he entered the kitchen there were two mare pegasi, one being a little filly, his daughter and the other was his wife, a beautiful yellow pegasus.

With orange eyes and a long purple mane with pink stripes going through it. She also had a cutie mark which looked like a thunder with some sparks around it.

The filly waved at her father. The stallion returned the gesture welcoming with a wave. The mare currently was making some flower sandwiches and some apple juice.

“Were you again having nightmares honey?” the mare gently asked, of which the stallion answered to

“Yeah... this time it was kind of creepy but hey it’s just a nightmare”

“That’s my stallion,” the pegasus enthusiastically said while going to him and kissing him on the cheek “Well, I made some sandwiches feel free to get some also don’t forget to get Fizzy Zephyr from school, okay?” the mare fast hooved towards the exit, putting on some sunglasses

“Hey, what’s with the hurry?” the stallion asked his wife. Which as far as he could see, on an emblem on her chest her name was Lightning Spark. “I’m going on a race, dummy, did you forget.?”

His wife was a flyer from the Wonderbolts, currently teaching gifted pegasus fillies in achieving top speed's and making masterful tricks. She wasn't the fastest flyer in Equestria but she was the fastest flyer who could communicate with fillies very well. She had to compete for daily Wonder Bolt flyer checkups.

“Good luck, honey,” the stallion said as he waved. The mare left the house in a hurry without even waving back, maybe she was late.

“Okay, Fizzy what you want do before school starts?” the stallion asked. The filly eating her fifth sandwich.

“Umm... I guess we could... finish that spell you started last night” the little filly said between chomps while finishing her sixth sandwich. “Uhh... ok, let’s go then” the stallion hesitantly said while taking off towards the living room, grabbing the plate with the "few" left sandwiches, while being followed by his daughter. Even that the filly was a pegasus, she loved watching her father working over spells.

The filly was currently at school doing what she does every day, study and play with friends. The unicron, meanwhile was still working on the spell he had started

“I still can’t remember starting research on this spell,” the unicorn mumbled to himself as he threw books left and right, looking if he accidentally typed his research on one of them.

“Maybe I could cast a memory...” He was send out of his thoughts by a rather loud knock on the door “I wonder who that could be,” the pony mumbled to himself, he sure wasn't expecting any guests.

“I’m coming, just give me a second” the pony shouted.

After a brief moment he opened the door, revealing a unicorn stallion with a light blue coat, blue eyes as well as a light blue mane with a white stripe going through it, his cutie mark was a big light blue snowflake with rather sharp ends, matching his coat and mane color.

“Sup Nightfall!” the unicorn greeted him.

“Sup Frozen Nova,” Nightfall returned the welcoming and hoof bumped the stallion, seemingly they knew each other pretty well. “Hey I haven't heard from you all morning,” Frozen Nova commented.

“It’s because I had some work over a spell and had to take Night Spark to school” Nightfall explained to Nova.

“Okay If you're free now we could go practice some magic, I could even teach a new destructive spell” the stallion said enthusiastically waiting for Fall's answer

“Sure, that would be great. And after we finish, I could get Fizzy from school.” The two unicorns took off towards a small empty field right outside Fall's house, which was located in Ponyville's outskirts, fading away in the distance.

Chapter 1 - How I Came To Be, part 2/2

View Online

My name is Nightfall. I’m a regular pony living in the outskirts of Ponyville with my family, consisting of my daughter, Fizzy Zephyr, and my wife, Lightning Spark.

Fizzy is a very playful and smart filly pegasus who currently is on some quest with her friends, who call themselves the Cutie Mark Crusaders, to find their cutie marks. I keep telling her that everything comes with time, but she is too young to understand.

Though that she is a pegasus, she is really keen on magic, and enjoys to help me with my spells, while her mother enjoys fillies. She's even part of the Wonderbolts program for gifted pegasi fillies, where she trains them, so that one day they can become as good, or even better, than the current ones. She also likes traveling and competitions. She is a caring mother and a kind wife.

As for me, I like, no, I love books. Just the idea of reading them makes me excited. Also, I like destructive magic, and enjoy creating new kinds of magic. Even though that I fail flawlessly at that, I won’t give up on trying. Also I don’t know why, but I enjoy working at night; that’s when my magic is the strongest. Even though Spark doesn’t really like it, I can’t help myself.

Frozen Nova is one of my friends. He is a unicorn which I spend my early years with. He comes from far land known as Chillston where the temperature are really low, but it seems he has got somehow special ability that makes the cold like a warm day.

He told me that his grandfather made a spell that allows ponies to sustain cold temperatures. Unfortunately, the spell was lost, and the only trace of this kind of magic goes through Nova and his family's blood.

One thing that connects us our passion for magic though he doesn’t like books and prefers to learn the magic trough improvised practice he still manages to recreate some of his ancestors great frost magics.

We both learn from each other and share the knowledge of spells, though I got a few other old friends which may not remember me I enjoy the company of Nova.

Ehh you don’t have time for making new friendships when you got so many lovely books.

As to how I came to be like this with my family and friends, that is a longer story but I will try to shorten it.

When I was a little colt unicorn, I enjoyed running around town with my friends, but as time went on, my dad, a professor in Canterlot's magic school, introduced me to magic trough books. That faithful day, I discovered my passion towards magic. As years passed, I got myself into more books, and they kept on increasing with every year lowering the time I had to spend with my friend’s. Eventually, they left me because I was too eager to master magic.

But, luckily, I met a unicorn just like me - though he was always the center of attention when the subject of magic came up. That unicorn was none other than Nova.

We shared the same interests towards magic. We even got ourselves into destructive magic - not sure how that happened (we both just loved blowing stuff up), he never left me like the other friends I had.

We both got our cutie marks on the same day, after practicing destructive magic. The only difference is that I got mine during the night. As we grew up, our goals grew apart. Nova shared that he wanted to create a spell, just like his ancestors, and be remember in time. As for me, I wanted nothing more than to master magic and make my father proud. Well, that was until I met her.

The most beautiful pegasus I had ever seen.

Her name was Lightning Spark, and wow, she loved to fly fast. She was on every single race with the Wonderbolts, and was the kindest mare I have ever met.

I knew she was perfect for me, but every time I gathered courage to ask her to go out with me, I started sweating and messing my tongue - though she found it funny, it was awfully embarrassing for me. She was so beautiful when she smiled. I had no chance. How could I make a mare as beautiful and kind as her to love an egghead like me?

On the other hoof, Nova wasn’t in his right mind. He kept on telling me she liked me, and I still had a chance. Of course, he was friends with her - heck, he was friends with everypony!

One day Nova had a crazy idea: as we stood in the cafeteria of our college, he decided to go to Spark and tell her my feelings towards her. I tried to stop him, but didn’t want to attract unwanted attention, so I just stood there with my cheeks burning from blushing. After a while, Nova went past me and wished me luck.

After a brief moment, Spark came and sat next to me. That was the most embarrassing moment of my life. I could barely keep my heart from jumping out of my chest. We sat there in complete silence. I was blushing so hard that I was sure she could see that clearly. But she didn’t mind. She just sat there and smiled.

She broke the silence with random questions and jokes, which made me feel a little bit more comfortable. As time went, we kept on meeting - I felt like she liked me; I felt like I had some chance with her. I felt like the time to make the most important step was approaching.

One day I invited her on a date at my house. Nova was out - probably on a party or something like that. She came more beautiful than ever. I could have passed out right there, but I had to keep my cool for this to work out. We spend some time laughing and talking as I made the most important step in my life.

I offered her my hoof in marriage.

She gasped in surprise at first, but then she yelled "YES!" I was so happy that this worked out, and most importantly, that I had won the mare of my life.

The marriage was a typical one - full of friends and family members, both mine and Sparks (though my friends were consisted of Nova, to whom I will be ever grateful for what he had done for me). Spark and I lived with Nova until we chose to move out and buy our own home - a beautiful two story house just outside Ponyville. Not much later, Fizzy was born, and we formed the family we have today. Even though we had our fights and misunderstandings, we also had sweet and happy moments, which make me the happiest pony alive to have such a great family.

"Indeed it does," Nightfall mumbled to himself as he was in his room during midnight. "I hope Fizzy continues the origins when she grows up" he said as he closed the big book he was writing in. On the cover there was a big title stating Night Spark Origins.

A thought went through his mind "I might get hungry," he mumbled. "Meh... I've got some sandwiches in the fridge, as long as somepony doesn’t come at night while being hungry, I'll be fine." "Time for some books" the stallion giggled as he sat at his desk and started reading some lovely books,
