A filly, a cub, a hill

A little draconaquus gasped underneath a bush trying desperately to catch his breath. In the distance he could hear the sounds of other draconaqui and the Alicorns clashing. The sound was a defending cacophony of thunder, explosions and impacts each sound clashing together in a wicked harmony.

Discord was fifty years old, barely out of his cradle. His mother and father were up there somewhere in the fight, they had told him to run as far as he could go and to hide until everything was over.

He didn’t know why they had told him to do this, it wasn’t the first time his parents had fought the alicorns, they were something called Rebels against order. The war between the two races had begun decades possibly centuries before he was born.

However this was the first time a battle had taken place so close to the draquonaquis’ home city. King Nocturnus and Queen Galaxia of the alicorns had joined the fray as well as the draconaquus Emperor Loki. Even young discord could tell that this battle, would not end favorably.

Why couldn’t the alicorns leave them in peace. Had they done something wrong? He had asked the adults this before but no one had answered him. His sister had said something about alicorns being pre-juiced but it hadn’t made any sense to him.

Discord’s breathing slowed and he peeked between the leaves of his temporary shelter. The sight that met his eyes was both wonderful and nightmarish, a painting of raw power and bloodshed with the night sky as a canvas. The young draquonoquis squeaked in terror and dashed from his hiding place, he didn’t care where he went as long as it was far away from this terrible battle.

He ran for what seemed like forever, until he stopped to catch his breath. It was several minutes before the presence of the other entity registered in his young mind. Discord started at the sight of the blue alicorn filly, she sat on the top of the hill staring at the battle taking place in the distance.

His older sister had told him many scary stories about the alicorn order keepers and how they liked to feast upon the tender flesh of chaotic entities. Was this filly going to use her near godly powers to cook him into her din-

“If your going to kill me can you just get it over with” the filly spoke, her voice velvety but blank of any emotion. No, there was an emotion, a tiredness to her words that spoke of resignation and bitterness.

The filly’s words finally registered “K-kill you? Y-you mean you’re not going to eat me?”

The filly stared at him in confusion. “What?” they were silent for a moment watching each other.

After a while the filly gestured for Discord to join her on the hill. Hesitating at first he approached and sat next to her, facing back towards the skirmish.

“From here it almost looks like a thunderstorm” The filly said staring at the clash of titanic proportions. Discord just nodded swallowing the lump that was forming in his throat.

“My Mommy and Daddy are over there. Are yours fighting too?”

“Yes” was all the young draquonoquis could get out.

They were silent for a long moment, watching the battle between their kinds. Discord looked up to the sky, the moon hung in the void, the sole constellation shining on the black velvet of the night sky. “I just wish they would stop fighting” Discord continued to stare at the sky after saying this, the filly looked at him for a moment before returning her gaze to the horizon.

“I do to.” Was all she said, the two shared a small sad smile.

Right now the two of them were not racial enemies, they weren’t harmony and chaos incarnate, they were just two children who wanted nothing more than to be home with there parents.

They sat there for a while, turning their eyes from the battle to the sky and back again. “Do you hate me?” The filly asked staring the draquonoquis down with sapphire eyes. He was unnerved by her stare unblinking stare but replied.

“I don’t know you so why would I hate you?” The filly gave a small almost imperceptible smile. It was well known to both that they were supposed to hate each other, they had grown up listening to stories where the other was portrayed as a monster.

Eventually the draquonaquis sat up, he bowed to the filly “You Highness” and with that he began to run once more, hoping to find someplace to escape the ancient war raging in the distance.

The filly continued to stare at the night sky for a while before a voice demanded her attention “Luna, come on we need to go, the old palace in the everfree should be safe now. Won’t it be nice to be back in the forests.” Princess Luna stood, giving one more look at the raging battle before following her sister.

She looked at the moon still high in the sky, she wondered if her father would still be around to lower it when the time came. The single constellation still hung in the sky, a Childs portrait of her father, an ode to better times. She still remembered the night when her father raised the moon and watched her as she guided her first stars into the sky.

She thought of the draconaquus cub, she hoped that he would be alright, maybe when the war finally ended she would see him again. Maybe she would even learn his name.

Discord only stopped his fleeing once to look back at the battle, he knew how this would end. He turned away for the last time, “Goodbye mother, goodbye father, so long sister Eris.” And with that he ran off towards the unknown of the world outside the draconaquus city. Maybe after this was all over he would find a place where he could live in peace, perhaps even the princess would be there as well.
