Chapter 1

The sky was dark, that much I'm sure of when I had began my battle against It. It is a very formidable opponent, nearly beat me the first time I fought it. I wouldn't be standing here, fighting It again if I hadn't had help from my friends, that's for sure. This time though, I am alone. Nothing but my array of weapons that have been with me from the beginning. With my magic I pick up my trusty sword, worn and smaller since I got it from my mother, and I make my starting move. Small but fast strokes on the pale flesh of It, spelling out my name, 'Dinky Doo'. My blonde mane covered my face when I had finished. I brushed it off to the side to look at my opponent.

It stayed in place, mocking me. It wasn't even phased by my attack. Determined to win, I watch my opponent for an opening. It uttered, "What is the capital of Equestria?"

I found the opening and attack, with speed greater than I could have imagined, and answered with a mighty yell, "Canterlot!"

Again, I had barely made a dent in It. I would've used stronger attacks, but I need to bring It back in one piece and It knows it. I can imagine It, laughing on the inside. I retreat for now to sharpen my sword. We may be fighting right now, but at least It gives me time to rest to fight later.

Once my blade sharpened, we were at a standoff again. I went up to It with my blade high, but staggered when It finally retaliated with more strange questions:

"Red is to Apple, as ______ is to Lemon

What is one of your parent's names?"

Before I'm overcome with any doubts, I attacked again, yelling, "Yellow! Ditzy!"

Once more, but with greater difficulty and numbers:

"7-3=

2+9=

1+9-2-0=

3+4="

"4! 11! Uhh... 10! I mean 8! 7!"

It seemed to finally surrender, but when It turned Its back to me I find out Its true nature. It was a two-sided liar! There were more riddles that I could barely get! I groaned loudly after thinking I had won.

"Muffin? Are you having trouble beating that monster again?" called out Mommy from down the hall.

"A little, but I think I'll be fine," I replied.

Ugh, I wish this was really a monster.

Mommy opened the door and flew in. I've always wondered how she never ran into anything, even though she doesn't have 'depth perception' or something Sparkler told me about.

"Let's see here..." She closed one eye and looked at the paper. "This isn't so bad. With your brain, I'm sure you'll beat It in no time."

"But it's so boring. I tried pretending it's a monster like you told me to, but I still remember that it's homework."

"Remember my little muffin, it takes a while to get used to. Hmm, wanna take a quick break and help Mommy bake some muffins?"

"Yay~"

The two of us left the room, but I gave one last glare at my desk before closing the door.

I sighed as I walked back into my room. Those muffins were so good. I sighed again after looking at my half finished homework. Why did it have to have a back?

I trotted in place to get into the mood. I picked up my pencil, er, sword with my mouth and prepared to finally defeat this monster. For some reason, it felt a lot more real than before. My room suddenly became a lot bigger and transformed into the inside a dark castle, my desk turned into a throne for It, and my homemade candlestick became one of those fancy chandelier things and was the only place light was coming from. My head dropped from suddenly feeling something slightly heavier than the pencil. My pencil had become an actual sword! Er, a knife anyway... Now I know something was really wrong.

The paper became the monster I imagined it as: a pale thin creature with long limbs and sharp teeth and claws. No eyes though, I guess I forgot to imagine those the first time. There were a lot of words and numbers all over Its body. On Its front, I could see that my answers had turned into slash marks and right along his forehead was my name.

In a raspy yet booming voice, the monster muttered, "Congratulations. Most foals usually don't check for a back..." The monster gets up from the throne and gave a toothy grin. "I hope you learned your light spells... or like the dark heheh."

It flexed it's claws and lightly scratched its face. "I'm going to enjoy shaving that lavender fur of yours... hmm, how about I call you 'my little baldy'? " It laughed as it blew out the lights with a loud stomp and it slowly walked towards me, the sound of its claws dragging against the floor was my only clue of where it is.

My first reflex was to gallop and I did, screaming at the top of my lungs. But for some reason, no matter which way I ran, it never seemed to end. With no other choice, I focused really hard on making the biggest light spell I could. My horn glowed brightly and eventually a small ball of light emerged from it. I panted a little since I only learned how to do it from Twilight a few days ago. I thought it would be bigger... Then I remembered something I had asked when Twilight was teaching me how to do it.

"Twilight, why are you making a bunch of small ones, instead of a big one?"

"You see Dinky..." Twilight started, then there was this really long lecture that I kinda forgot "...and that's why a number of small light orbs can cover as much area as a large light orb, while still using less time and energy."

So, I did what Twilight told me and spread out as many small light orbs as I could, being sure the monster wasn't too close to where I was. I was finally able to light up the whole room, when I heard the claw dragging sound behind me. The sound stopped all of a sudden. I spin around to see the monster almost able to reach me. Instead of attacking me, it stands there and acts like it's clapping.

"Good job. Now then... if you answer this question correctly, this'll all be over... 'If I have a stick that was a meter long and cut it into four evenly cut pieces, how long is each piece?' You have until I catch you to answer..."

I galloped away again, this time to buy time. Why'd it have to be a word problem? Math is bad enough without using words. If I didn't get tired, I would've kept galloping instead of guessing the question. The monster was right behind me when I answered.

"Umm, one-fourth of a meter?"

The monster stopped to think about my answer, "Meh... close enough... ARRRGH!"

The knife in my mouth levitated on its own and hit the monster in the back somehow, my room was back to normal, and my homework was done. I'm not really sure what just happened, but it was fun. Scary, but fun. I put my homework into my school saddlebag and called it a night.

Outside of Dinky's room and into the kitchen, Ditzy was having a small chat with Twilight Sparkle.

"Thanks again for helping my little muffin with her boredom," said Ditzy.

"Not a problem," Twilight answered modestly, "I'm just glad to see that the Imagination spell I put on her room worked so well. I remember my parents using it a lot whenever I was doing something boring."

"Next time, please make it a little less scary looking."

"I still need to work on that," she replied, with a slightly embarrassed laugh, "So, same time tomorrow for Dinky's magic lessons?"

"Yup, and make sure to have muffins ready~"
