A Traveler's Journal

by Frost

First published

A Traveler is sent to Equestria after casting an experimental spell.

A well-accomplished Mage and Traveler, named Frost, finds a note sent by the Mages Guild detailing a new spell and is sent to Equestria after attempting to use the spell. He finds that he cannot leave, but can still use his magic and a limited version of normal Traveling, which allows him to go to other realities of Equestria.

I will be adding more tags and characters as the story progresses. By the way, this is my first fic.

I write these notes in case I go insane, get stuck in another multiverse again, or if I need to quickly explain my story to somebody. I write these as a novel, so, if someone needs to read my notes, they will not be bored and abandon these pages. I may never need these, or they may save my life tomorrow. Though these may take a long time to write, I am sure they will eventually be needed for one reason or another. I do not claim to be a decent writer, but I hope these will be readable, or else my story may eventually be lost to legends.

The note, for the spell, sits next to me as I write. Oh, how much that simple piece of paper has forever changed me. If anybody who is capable of casting the spell finds it, please be careful, unless you want to get trapped in a random universe.
You may wonder about me, why my name is "Frost", and how I can Travel to other universes. The first, my name, is for a good reason. The reason I have such a name instead of my actual name is that, for lack of a better explanation, names have power. Yes, it IS unfortunate, having to call me by a name that makes little sense, but it is true. Mages, in general, cast spells on you better if they know your given name. Rather adept mages may even be able to read your mind due to knowing your true name, using it as a "key" of sorts. If you are wondering why Frost is the name I chose, it is because of my magic. I use cyromancy and hydromancy better that any other magic, though I can cast any type of spell with enough effort, related to ice or not.

As for why I can Travel, I do not know. Some celestial force must have chosen me for one reason or another, but there ARE already other travelers, spread throughout the omniverse (Though we don't meet for tea very often, we usually only see each other for a reason similar to "I need help killing this thing"). The multiverses I Travel to are simple works of fiction on Earth, but are universes, similar to ours, if you ever reach one. I have been Traveling for millions of years, never obliged to do anything, but helping people anyways. You may wonder why I or others like me do not help those poor people who die in, say, horror novels, however, we actually DO. You do not see the changes because a new, unchanged, universe branches off every time we change one. Remember, ANYTHING you write actually happens in one universe or another.

Anyways, enough, for now, about me. I may add more about myself in the afterword of later chapters in this "novel" that is a recounting of my time in Equestria. Tally-ho!

LOCATION: FROST'S HOUSE
TIME: SEVERAL MONTHS AGO

I was resting in my pocket universe of a home, waiting until either I was needed in a universe somewhere, or my new spellbooks arrived. I already knew nearly everything about hydromancy and cyromancy, but learning other magic couldn't hurt, could it? The doorbell dinged, which was strange, as nobody can enter my miniature universe without my knowing. I decided to head for the door, because this may be about my books, when I noticed a note that was stuck to my front door.

I moved towards the note to pick it up, while checking to make sure nobody had recently Traveled to my house. I found no signs of Travel, so the note must have been sent through the mail system. Well, either that, or somebody much more experienced than me had found a way to break into a pocket universe, place this note here, and leave without any other trace, which, as far as I know, is impossible. Shrugging to myself, I picked up the note, which said:

The box outside contains your new spellbooks. We are testing a new type of lock. Cast the spell below to open it, and send your results to the Mages Guild.

Mages Guild Postal Service

(Note: the spell will be enclosed after I finish writing, so it can easily be moved without bringing this entire book)

That was just like the Mages Guild, to test a new spell by forcing someone to use it. Oh well, if it was made correctly, then it should work perfectly fine. I stood in the place directed by the note, and cast the spell. There was a flash of bright light, and I was standing in a forest. I was in a small crater, which is typical of Traveling. Luckily, I ended up arriving at ground level. I, of course, immediately panicked.

I tried to leave this universe, but found that I was blocked by an unknown force. I would have to stay here until I found a way around the barrier, or until I could get a more powerful Traveler to get me out of here. So, better get ready to stay for a while. Oh well. I've been in worse situations.

I had no idea where I was, other than that I was in a forest, so I set up a small camp. Thankfully, I could make my own water, but food would eventually be a problem. Wait... what was that? Did someone just Travel from or into a nearby universe? Scanning for energy, neither the "launch" universe, nor the "destination" universe were this one. Unfortunate, as they may have been able to get me out of here. I searched for Travelers, with few results, almost all of which were just as stuck here as I was. I looked, again, for any humans. I was the only one in this universe, but there were many spread throughout this section of the multiverse. I'd say about... five hundred and twenty-five universes? I stopped looking and decided to stay in this universe, for now.

I had been staying there for several hours, looking for food, when I heard a voice.
"I'm telling you Applejack, the magical surge came from- what's this?"
Of course, I didn't know what they were saying at the time, but I could still tell that they were "talking".

Two things flashed through my mind. 1: Even though I didn't understand the words, I had heard that tone, that voice, somewhere...
2: Someone had found my campsite, where I kept the books that were in the box. The box that was unlocked. And also had my real name in my journal. I ran.

I burst out into the open and saw six multicolored horses, struggling to open the box. One was purple, one pink, one orange, one cyan, one cream, and one white. They all had intense magic surging from their bodies, which were coming from jeweled necklaces, a tiara for the purple one. Also, the pink one was a Seer. I KNEW this from somewhere, but I didn't know what. The box popped open, and I noticed something moving in the shadows. I raised my arm and fired six ice spears, one aimed at each of them.

The spears pierced the head of the hydra, who fell down, dead. Understandably, the horses were shocked. Wait, they were sentient? Not the weirdest thing that's happened to me. The purple one started glowing, as did the other ones. The power from the jewelry surged.

"See, I TOLD you that this was a good idea!" I heard the cyan one shout, most likely referring to bringing the jewelry. OK, so they WERE sentient. Wait, is that a rainbow being shot at me? Well, shoot.

The rainbow hit me square in the face with a decent amount of force, but didn't seem to do much more that that. Except that I felt... cleaner, somehow. Holy magic? Probably. Also, after I recovered from being hit in the face with what felt like a very dull flail, I noticed that two of the horses were unicorns, two were pegasi. I've seen thi- "ARRGH! What- MY HEAD!"
Memories came surging back, of everything I had ever done. Every thing I had ever felt, I was feeling right now. Namely, pain. Immortality does that to you eventually. The magic, assumingly from those pieces of jewelry, brought back memories more than just emotions. It brought back memories of a show- what was it? My Little Pony? Right, that must be... "ARGH!" The waves of pain brought me to my knees. Why does this happen to me on a daily basis? Oh well, it's better than some other universes I could be stuck in.... I blacked out, but not before managing to say: "Don't...don't read the book. It'll kill you... all..."

I woke up several hours later, and found myself in what I assumed to be Twilight's library. Thankfully, I could sense that I still had my clothes on (you'd be surprised...). Strangely, I found no magical imprint from the box that my journal was in. I heard Twilight say something.
"So, you're awake. Can you talk?"

That's it for the first chapter. Yes, I know it's short, but I'm not the kind of person who likes sitting down and writing for several hours. If anyone wishes for me to continue this, please say so! This story will STAY Teen, so don't worry about being locked out.

"Yes, I can talk," I said, sitting up. "How'd you guess?" Subconsciously, I noted that I shouldn't be able to understand her.
"The campsite." She got a notebook from nowhere. "What's your name, if you have one?"
That isn't important," I said, "Don't ask why. Currently, I'm more concerned about the fact that I got here from casting an unlocking spell."
"Wait, casting? But you don't have a..."
"Horn. Yes, I know, Twilight. I just work that way. Have you ever heard of humans?"
"Yes, Lyra-" She suddenly stopped.
"What is it?"

Wait, I wasn't supposed to know her name yet... Oh well, worse than this has happened before.

"How... how do you... know..."
I cut her off. "It involves multidimensional travel, highly advanced magic, and children's stories."
"How does that even...?"
"Work? I have no idea. Heck, I don't even know how one mistake in a unlocking spell could possibly send someone to another universe, and I'm a master at teleportation magic." Wait, a master? Why would I say that?
"...Oh. Well, why are you still here? And how do you know Equine?"
"To answer your first question, either the spell got me past a barrier, or it created one, because I'm not leaving these realities anytime soon. To the second, I'm kind of having a headache casting a translation spell until I understand your language. A normal human wouldn't understand you, in most cases. Anyways... why'd you bring me here, unbound, without telling Celestia?" ...Why would I have a headache from such a spell? I only ever cast a one-use spell, which does not need constant focus.

"My friends can't use magic to stop you, we trust you for some strange reason, and... Spike? Take a letter."
He walked into the room. "Ok Twi- whoa, WHAT'S THAT?"
"Please don't..." I started.
He fainted.

"Do you think being cold would wake him up?" I asked.
"Yes. but he won't like it," she replied
"Oh well, I can't cast ice magic very well anyways. It could be a bit dangerous if I accidentally put too much power into it." Wait, what? Is this a...

"Again, how-"
"Teleportation magic involves life detection magic. It can be very useful at times. Could you please back up a bit?" She did so, and "I" stood up.
I noticed I stood about two to three feet above her. Hopefully this wouldn't be a problem, though it would make "me" stand out in a crowd. "Yes, I stand on two feet," I told her, "that's just how my body works."
She looked stunned, but quickly recovered. She proceeded to ask me several questions about humans, and I answered them the best that I could, though I hadn't been to Earth for a while. Spike woke up in the middle of it, and Twilight got him to write and send a letter.

After the questioning:
"Could you let your friends in?" I asked, "I'd rather get this over with as early as possible."
She opened the door, and her friends walked in. Well, four of them. I just ignored that and focused on the four that were actually here.
Rainbow Dash seemed to worry that there was another intelligent species in the room, for some reason.
Pinkie Pie was focused the party that she would someday have for me, magical radar or not.
Rarity seemed fascinated by the clothes I was wearing.
Applejack just looked stunned.
And Fluttershy was in the doorway, looking terrified.
And I was in the center of it all, when a powerful force seemed to impact my body.
There was a bright flash, and I felt the sensation of Traveling. Again.

LOCATION: ???
TIME: ???

OK, so there were other Travelers showing up here as well, apparently from a similar spell designed to teleport the caster. Or wearer, as it could be applied as an enchantment, and would not show up as a curse. So any Traveler could appear at any time, which means that I would have some people to help me if this was more than the wrong spell being sent. And at least one of them is aware of the show's existence. Wait, why can't I talk yet? And why can't I see?

I heard the sound a knife makes when it is drawn. (Wait, why do knives cut the air anyways?) After that, a scream, and a laugh.
FLASH!
Still dark. This time I heard a yell, which, from what I could guess, was that of a male.
FLASH!
I could see this time. It was a hospital, but all I could see clearly was a chart. It said something along the lines of someone being accidentally poisoned, but I couldn't see more than that. The fact that I could read it must mean that either this person could read the language of this universe, or had a spell casted on them to do so. Or that it was plain English, or another language that I could understand.
FLASH!
Another scream, this one sounded much younger, and more frightened. I also heard what would likely be a name, but translation spells don't work in dreams such as these, unless the person whose eyes you're seeing through has said spell casted on them. It was still dark.
FLASH
I saw a pistol pointed at my head, which immediately fired. Wait, why were there guns here?
FLASH!
Falling from the sky, extremely high up.
FLASH!
Someone in power armor, standing still in a dark room.
FLASH
I saw a blue phone booth. There was nothing immediately unusual about it, but I sensed a highly powerful... humanoid, and another person in there.
Apparently, that did it.
FLASH!

LOCATION: OUTSKIRTS OF EVERFREE FOREST
TIME: NEAR 8:30 A.M.

I awoke. For real, this time, unless this whole thing has been a dream. I was still disoriented, but I became aware of a dragging sound. I also felt myself being pulled along. I opened my eyes. Still darkness, but it was more of a "In a dark room" darkness, rather than "Blindness" darkness. I could detect moisture via a spell I had come up with myself, so I cast it, and saw six quadrupeds, two flying, heading towards what appeared to be a vet from the sheer number of animals there. Four were pulling whatever I was in. I heard gibberish, along the lines of the sound of the name being called out in one of those dreams. I cast the translation spell as well.

Now, funny thing about that spell: it produces a fairly bright flash, which meant that they saw the ... whatever they were carrying me in, flash. They didn't seem to notice it, for some reason. I could understand them now, and would likely not need to cast it again to understand this language. Another thing about that spell, as well as the moisture detection one: They take up a lot of mana, and I couldn't tap into the ley lines of this universe yet.

"...I told you, this thing is resistant to my magic. The only thing I can do to help is pull it with you. Here, look, I'll try it again," One of them, whom I assumed was Twilight, said.
It would make sense. Several hundred years (I'm immortal, in case you don't know.) of training magic resistance could, ya' know, make it hard to use magic on someone. The fact that it was passive may have been because I was unconscious.

I felt myself being lifted into the air, inadvertently opening the bag and dropping me on the ground. Fortunately (or not), I didn't land on my head.

"That was easier than- IT'S OUT!" She yelled. Apparently, they found something to put the Elements in, because none of them were wearing their pieces. Five of them ran, but Fluttershy stayed, and stared me down.

Ah, The Stare. If I had to qualify it, I'd say it was a ability, unique to her, which hypnotizes and brings out strong negative emotions. A good comparison would be a continuous fear spell. It could go anywhere from moderate fear to insanity. Either way, it would have the same effect: it would make the target leave you alone for a while. Nothing from this planet could resist it.

Thankfully, I was not from this planet.

A.N. This took a while, mainly due to my own laziness and the fact that I share this computer. Oh, and school, too, I guess. Anyways, I had an idea for this chapter halfway through, as I wanted to introduce other OCs being added early on. And if enough people ask, I will make an "OC application" blog post, with its own pre-made application requirements, but only if enough people want it. If you want a crossover, MESSAGE ME instead (obviously). It could be a good idea, but I don't want everyone to know what I'm doing before I even start writing the chapter.

P.S. I've changed the title as well, as the old one was kinda.. er, stupid.

EDIT and P.P.S.: the OC Creator, or at least the first third of it, should be up by the end of May.
