Yeah, I wasn't fond of this episode, particularly due to how Twilight was portrayed.
7174394 I thought Twilight was completely in character in this episode. Overthinking things, constantly trying to get things right in her mindset, and being a total unintentional jerk. You know...the usual Twilight in terms of trying to 'help' a pony.
7174419
This is Season 6, in which Twilight Sparkle, the Princess of Friendship, AND the one who gave Starlight Glimmer a second chance, even though she was responsible for creating a cult that took away everypony's identity AND was ready to commit genocide because she was petty, was very distrustful of Trixie, EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN'T PART WAYS ON BAD TERMS. I'm sorry, but that first image in the author's note about Twilight's logic sums it all up.
On top of that, there's the heavy implication that Trixie was trying to commit suicide when she was going to go through with her act without Starlight Glimmer, as it wasn't even stated that Trixie had a backup plan and was heavily relying on the slim chance that Starlight would forgive her.
So sorry that I happen to be that one guy that disagrees (and seriously? You or someone decided to downvote me because I respectfully disagreed instead of sounding like a whiny troll?), but I just didn't like this episode because of those two parts that really irked me.
You weren't kidding when you said you could tear into this episode like nobody's business... And I love that.
7174442 Amen... not about the episode, just the random downvotes.
Awkward dinner for the win!
7174442 I feel your pain, I found some parts of the episode cringeworthy. And it was weird to hear Trixie refer to herself in first person that often.
Dear Trixie,
I saw your spoon bending. So what if I told you, Ponyville is not what it seems.
Mysteriously,
Morpheus
7174535
Dear Trixie,
Do not try to bend the spoon. Instead, only try to realise the truth.
Sincerely "I don't know. The Wachowski's never gave me a name"
Foal Free Press' headline:
Stage magician attempts suicide in front of live audience.
You know... FOR KIDS!
Celestia's facial expressions, tho. Awesome stuff. They've gotten a lot better with good facial expressions since Season 1. They've gotten a lot better at most things since Season 1.
Independence Day.
Everyone's misunderstanding why Twilight ended up being so bitter. At first it was just awkward... and then Trixie bent Twilight's silverware.
7174611 And now I'm waiting for the new emoticons to show up.
My dearest Mistress Princess Twilight Sparkle,
Forgive me for questioning you in your infinite wisdom, but why do you keep leaving Celestia alone in your home? She does terrible things and I am less than useless to stop her. She was scooting. You know, that thing dogs do when they drag their asses along the carpet? She did that everywhere you hold dear. Your bed. Your dungeon. Your sexy dungeon. Your throne. The Map. The library! Does she never wipe? I think these pranks are more than just Celestia being childish, I think she is also going senile. Please, I beg you, allow me to increase my cleaning supplies budget. In fact, if you allow me to buy some extra bleach and ammonia, I could secretly go and clean Celestia's castle as well.
Signed your loyal slave and amateur chemist,
Neko Majin C.
~KBO.
Well, that image of Twilight's logic... doesn't really make sense. Even though I'm one of those people who didn't like the season five finale, Starlight had a misguided view of friendship, and all she needed was a friend.
Trixie was just a jerk for the sake of being a jerk. She actively avoided being friendly.
I thought Celestia was checking to see if the Silverware had been stolen from Canterlot castle.
"this fork looks so familiar..."
Dear Twilight,
You do realize that if you had dragged Starlight back to that boring as fuck dinner, Trixie would have ended her show with a suicide. Didn't I tell you back when we were leaving the Crystal Empire that you should give Starlight the space she needs to complete her lessons? When are you going to take heed to what I say?
Sincerely,
Spike
Dear Fax Machine,
Yeah...after what pretty much everypony refers to as 'The Certain Thing Spike Did in Canterlot that Shall Not be Named' I've decided to do the smart thing and ignore any advice you give me.
Sincerely,
Twilight Sparkle
Yeah, that first image summed up Twilight to me in this episode. I usually like Twilight, and I enjoyed this episode overall, but Twilight herself was something that really was a low point to me. She didn't trust Trixie, who was under the influence of a mind-altering amulet in her last appearance and was just doing her f*cking job in her first appearance (sorry, I still really hate Boast Busters), and yet she forgave Starlight, who basically ended up nearly f*cking up reality permanently. And then she tried to force Starlight to make friends with Cranky, Vinyl Scratch, and Derpy/Ditzy despite Starlight not being interested, and then bringing them to dinner without even telling Starlight.
This episode did have its moments, but I really hated Twilight here. Sure, she learned her lesson, but Jesus, sometimes I don't see how she's that great of a friend. Or, in this case, a teacher.
7175301 I never bought the "she was just doing her job" excuse. Being a magician does not excuse one from consequences when committing fraud...
But yeah, otherwise, Twilight's immediate forgiveness with Starlight was kind of strange.
7175339 Well, yes, I suppose that's correct; Trixie should obviously not have lied about vanquishing the Ursa. But otherwise, the whole "Great and Powerful" stuff was indeed her job, in a sense; magicians are supposed to embellish their talents, otherwise they would get no audience. Pretty much every magician does it.
7174990 Dear Fax Machine,
That sounds like a win-win to me.
7175362 Well, I don't think the other character's reactions were too bad. I mean, Trixie uses hyperbole like "most spectacular feats of magic ever witnessed by pony eyes" and "most magical unicorn in all of Equestria" (her voice is an obvious indicator of her ego), and the advertising did not match the product. The three skeptical ponies are also the ones who wield the Elements of Harmony against Nightmare Moon just a few episodes prior, so it's not like their skepticism was uncalled for.
And note that at first, it's only skepticism. They don't actually make a scene. The first thing anyone says is Rarity's "My, my, my! What boasting!" It sounds a bit hypocritical coming from her, but really, just listen to that insufferable show-off style voice. Spike didn't even get to finish his complaint, and the subsequent statements from Applejack, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash were just an explanation to Twilight when she asked them "There's nothing wrong with being talented, is there?" The only reason Trixie takes any notice of them was because of Rainbow Dash shouting boo... which was because Applejack was glaring at her. Then Trixie starts insulting them upfront ("Who is so ignorant as to challenge the magical ability of the Great and Powerful Trixie?"). Rainbow Dash asks the sensible question -- What makes her think she's so special?
As for them getting on stage and showing off themselves? Well, when the crowd's reaction was cricket's chirping, Trixie was the one who directly challenged them ("I hereby challenge you, Ponyvillians. Anything you can do, I can do better."). She then starts harassing Twilight. Honestly, she may not be baddest pony out there, but I don't think this can be excused by saying that the magician thing is her job.
Showing off their own skills is not really doing any favors for Trixie. Trixie challenged them into doing so with the assurance that she could (and was going to) do better. She doesn't. What she does to AJ, RD, and Rarity is nowhere near as impressive as what they do.
And here's the real killer: Twilight pretty much saves Trixie's life at the end, and what does she do? She doesn't apologize, not even thank her, and instead seeks out some amulet to take revenge. That's just low. I mean, sure, the amulet corrupted her, but it her own decision to seek revenge in the first place.
Like I said, Trixie isn't all bad, but doing her job doesn't excuse the fraud, the false advertisement, or the misplaced revenge.
7175477 I'm pretty sure her initial 'revenge' plot was to show Twilight up in a magic duel after getting a power boost. 'Leave Ponyville Forever' was probably already part of the evil influence.
Vinyl Scratch is the mute, but who can say for sure about Cranky and Derpy? Both of them match both descriptions pretty well.
7175477 You bring up some interesting points, and I have to give you this: you were definitely right about the last one. Trixie's seeking out a powerful amulet without apologizing after her life was saved is low. And yes, that is a problem.
But when Twilight's friends explained why having talents was okay, but as long as you didn't boast about them, that was a thing I had to disagree with. First of all, while I admit that Trixie got carried away, she was still kind of supposed to boast somewhat--no one is going to watch a performer who doesn't think too highly of his- or herself. Second of all, I know this argument has been used before, but if they didn't like the performance, they could just leave. They didn't pay up front, and it isn't like Trixie was holding them hostage and forcing them to watch. They could have left, but they didn't.
Furthermore, while I admit that Trixie targeted and challenged them, Rainbow Dash did bring it upon themselves, in a way, by booing her. Like I said, she could have just left instead, but booing is more in character, so she had to do it. Trixie did insult them, yes, but when Rainbow Dash asks the question--what makes Trixie so special?--the answer--the real answer--is simple. Trixie is a performer. She embellishes her talents. She's supposed to make herself sound special. There aren't many magicians who claim to be like normal people.
I do wholeheartedly agree that Trixie shouldn't have harassed Twilight, though. That was uncalled for.
But the reason Trixie challenged the Ponyvillians was because they didn't believe that she was as powerful as she claimed. Obviously she isn't, but the point is that no one seemed too impressed by her magic or believe she could have conquered an Ursa Major. She wanted to show them she could actually do things.
As for AJ, Rarity, and RD going on stage and getting beaten by Trixie, I have to disagree with your opinion on how Trixie's responses were inferior somewhat. It's true that she didn't try what they did, but for two of them, I thought she did even better. Applejack did some fancy rope tricks. Trixie, in turn, hypnotized her and tied her up, which, considering Applejack's skill as a farmer and overall strength, cannot be an easy thing to do. Rainbow Dash did make that rainbow with the water from the clouds and the fancy flying, which is impressive, but again, to me, Trixie one-ups her by spinning her around with her own rainbow and making her sick. Rainbow Dash is a stunt flyer and I wouldn't think she gets sick that easily, judging from experience; also, Trixie is a unicorn who manipulated weather, which should be really hard to do if not impossible, considering pegasi and alicorns are the only ponies who should be able to manipulate weather. Trixie didn't do anything impressive with Rarity, though, I'll agree with that. But it seems like Trixie can actually be pretty good at magic, considering how impressive her tricks on AJ and especially RD are when you think about them.
To conclude, I still really despise Boast Busters and I wish AJ, RD, Rarity, and Spike had behaved better (Spike seemed to always be whining to Twilight about how she should show Trixie up, and he's pretty unbearable). Trixie does have problems in that episode, like harassing Twilight and not thanking her after she saved her life, but she was fine compared to Twilight's friends. The advertising did not quite match the product from what we'd seen, but we might have gotten something more impressive had Twilight's friends not interrupted.
This is from what I have seen. I still don't like Boast Busters and I find Trixie's character to be a good thing in it--she's interesting and has a personality and apparently, the writers like her too as they've brought her back twice. If you still disagree with me, fine, it's your opinion, and you've brought up some really good points. I'm just trying to explain why I think what I think is justified.
You know, I'm kind of surprised that Trixie and Starlight would be friends. Sure they have 'enslave a town' as something in common but their core beliefs are pretty different. Starlight is all about equality and Trixie has to be better than everyone. They should get together the same way oil and water mix.
7174850 Precisely. Besides, Starlight wasn't trying to break time&space, and she didn't really seem aware that her forced equality friendship was wrong in any way. It's astonishing to me that people still misinterpret her SO MUCH.
"Eat your heart out, Hugh Jackman."
Trixie Lulamoon and Starlight Glimmer
Those who have seen The Prestige know exactly what I mean.
7175751 Yep, and Jack the Ripper just really liked hugs. With knives. He never understood why his friends always bled all over and stopped moving. Its so easy to misunderstand other people.
7175912 That's a completely false analogy. To the point of being ridiculous.
7175917 Not really. Starlight is basically a sociopath. She has to be taught basic things like the fact that ponies don't like being mind-controlled, or maybe we don't need to use magic for everything ever. She took an entire town's talents from them for their own good. She's a self-professed evil pony. But hey, even when she stuck Twilight and her friends in the brainwashing room, she didn't know she was hurting anyone, right?
7175678
By the end of the episode, they've known each other for less than 24 hours. I doubt they've come anywhere close to learning each others' core beliefs.
7175933
Yeah, Starlight is absolutely not neurotypical. Somepony with a normally-functioning brain does not follow a path from "my friend moved away" to "enslavement and brainwashing" to "make the time/space continuum my bch".
7175933 The fact that she calls her past self evil only means that she realized she had been doing bad things. In light of the new understandings brought by Twilight. The fact that she grew up thinking that influencing others with magic for their own good was okay does not make her evil, just incredibly deluded. She's fully capable of feeling empathy and connections towards others, see Sunburst. That already means she's not a sociopath.
Cranky should get his own Talkshow, he's not afraid to ask the big questions!
"How do you get your hair to do that all the time?"
We want answers, Celestia!
Let's be honest here; The fork would do way better leading Equestria in regards to friendship.
And it's glorious!
It's more screen time hen she deserves. To be fair, I get the feeling Twilight coerced Celestia there in the first place since she didn't look pleased about anything.
She is soo much better naked.
As hilariously insensitive as always, Miles. And I love you for that.
7174394 Took the words right out of my mouth, partner! Oooh, I HATED this episode!
I KNEW this was going to crop up with this episode! Seriously, I couldn't have been the only one expecting this!
Dear overly paranoid teacher,
I'll choose my own friends thank you very much. By the way, my new "friend" asks that you join us for a threesome because you need a REAL lesson in "friendship."
Sincerely,
Starlight Glimmer
It is understandable why she would have a harder time forgiving Trixie than Starlight. With Trixie it was more personal. She made her friends and families lives miserable for the sake of one upping Twilight.
With Starlight it wasn't personal and comes with being the elements of Harmony.
8609410
And Starlight, you know, ripped their sense of purpose right off their flanks. Totally different and all. Especially, since, you know, the only time Trixie was able to do anything was under the influence of a corrupting amulet. So, Trixie, the mare who didn't do anything bad, other than showing up her friends when they claimed they could do something better than her, whereas Starlight LITERALLY enslaved a village of like, fifteen people. On her own, under no influences.
I agree Twilight’s portrayal sucked, but I liked Trixie’s reformation.
8609410
Plus Trixie was acting very suspicous and was speaking in a voice like she was up to something, with Starlight she already earned Twilight´s trust, Trixie ran away and didn´t see Twilight for a year.

Thank you!
