He trotted up to the front gates of Canterlot, a lone Pegasus stood in his way. He knew he wouldn’t last long in a fight with his horn snapped in two. A unicorn without his magic. How ironic. Who would have thought? It was then he noticed the Pegasus who stood in his way was a mare. He smiled slightly and opened his mouth to speak.
“Hello miss, my name is Psyche.” He said. “I would like to pass, but do not wish for any trouble. Will you let me through?” he asked. The mare stood there for a few second before answering.

“How rude.” She scoffed. Smirking as she took a few steps toward the stallion. “Isn’t it usually a colts job to hold the door open for a pretty young mare such as myself?” she giggled quietly.
She walked past the stallion, brushing her tail against his chin in a very flirtatious manor. “My name is Sky. If you want my last name you’ll have to convince me to let you pass. Hell, I might even let you stay at my home if you’re lucky.” She winked.

Psyche felt a cold rush down the back of his spine. Was this strange mare trying to seduce him? He looked behind him to see her smiling warmly at him. Her clean white coat brushing against his gruff grey fur. She turned around and trotted past him, turning again to face him.
She stood and looked at him. Her beautiful light purple eyes staring right into his. He chuckled and looked down at the mare.

“You seem familiar miss, I’ll give you that.” He said with a smirk across his face. The mare seemed shocked. Her eyes flew wide open and her mouth dropped.
“Psyche…you really…don’t remember me?” She asked. The colt gave her a confused look.
“I’m sorry…I can’t say I’ve met you before…” He said sternly. Sky took a step forward, her eyes beginning to water.

“Psyche…” She whimpered. She rushed forward and buried her face into his chest. Psyche stood there in complete confusion. Who was this mare? How did she know him? Though, it came as no surprise to him that he might have forgotten who she was. Ever since he woke in the Everfree Forest and found his horn to be snapped in half he couldn't remember most of who he was. He was lucky to have remembered his own name.

The young mare pulled her face back from the colts chest. “Psyche…I've been so alone for so long now…I just want somepony who I can call a friend…somepony I can call my lover!” She screamed. Psyche just stood there. What led to this meeting? Why was he there in the first place?

“Psyche please tell me you remember who I am!” She cried. “I-I’m sorry…I really am…But I don't think I've seen you before in my life…” he replied quietly. Sky shoved her face back into Psyche’s chest, crying even more. :What do I do?!” Thought the stallion. “I can’t just leave her like this…she must have some connection to me, otherwise she wouldn't be this upset over me not recognizing her…”

Suddenly, a flash a light flew through his mind. He could see memories of him and the mare from years passed. He could see him, Sky, and three foals. Twin fillies and a colt. “Daddy, why are you going away?” asked the young colt. “I have a client who asked I see him in Ponyville.
Don’t worry, Blitz. I’ll only be gone for a week or two.” That was three months ago.

When Psyche finally snapped out of it he looked down at the mare, who was still crying into his chest. He place his fore hooves on her shoulders and pushed her back so he could look at her. Tears streaming down her face. Psyche wiped the tears away from her eyes and smiled. “Sky…oh gods Sky how could I forget you of all ponies!? Not to mention our children! Oh sweet Celestia, Blitz must be so worried…and Aurora and Shimmer…oh I’m a horrible father!” He wept.

He hugged the mare as tightly as he possibly could.
“I’m so sorry, my love! Can you ever forgive me?!” He cried. Sky looked down at the colt and smiled. She smiled brightly and nuzzled his chest. “Psyche, you remembered who I am, and you remembered our foals. That’s all I care about. You’re still that daft stallion I married.” She said softly. Psyche looked back at her and wiped the tears from his cheeks.

“Now come on,” She whispered. “let’s get you home.”
`“I don’t know what to say...” He thought. Here was this mare whom he’d only known for a little over a year. They’d had three foals and he had forgotten all about them. Just because he had forgotten which was the correct path to Canterlot. His horn was snapped in two and he had no idea how it had happened. He still remembered his parents and how his father was rarely around. He remembered how alone he was growing up. He never had many friends, and the ones he did have he almost never got to see.

But how could he forget the love of his life? He felt so ashamed of himself...but he knew he had loved her very much before all this had happened. Then there were his foals. The twin pegasus fillies Aurora and Shimmering Stars, and the youngest of the bunch Blitz. Blitz looked more like his father, mostly the horn and his coat and whatnot. The young colt had just started using his magic when Psyche had left his home.

“Oh great,” He thought. “who is going to teach Blitz to use his magic properly now? I know I can’t do with my horn as it is...” Psyche had no idea how he was going to teach his son to control his powers, but he knew it had to be done if he was to make it into any school of magic.
Then he started to wonder how old his children were and how long it had been since he last saw them. He turned to Sky, who had been surprisingly quiet, turned to her husband and smiled. “It’s ok,” she said lovingly. “We'll be home in no time.”

Psyche smiled back at her. He didn’t want to worry her too much. “I know...” He replied. “I just...” He didn't know what to say. For what seemed like the billionth time in his life, he was at a loss for words.
“How long was I gone?” He asked. He wanted to know if he had missed any birthdays that he would have to make up for. Sky’s smiled slowly left her face. It was obvious she didn’t like thinking about how long he had been away from here. Finally, after a few moments hesitation, she replied.

“Six months...” She said. Psyche let out heavy sigh. “I’m so sorry...” He murmured. Sky just smiled and rubbed her head against her husband's neck. Her soft, warm coat brushing against his. “Don’t be sorry.” She said softly. “You’ve no reason to be. It’s not your fault.” Psyche couldn't help but smile. The two walked for what seemed like a week. Seconds turned into minutes, into hours, into days.

A Lovely Start to a Bitter Story.

Hello there, my name is Psyche. I am a unicorn born to a family of five in Canterlot. I'd rather not speak about them at this time but introductions must be made. I've been grieving for a very long time now, and I have come to the conclusion that to move forward I must recollect on my own life as I had lived it.

Now where to start…I guess the beginning is always a good place…I was born in Canterlot 43 years ago next month. I had a normal childhood just like any other Canterlot colt. Except I wasn’t one for the glamour and giant hats. I longed to get away as fast as I could. I knew it meant leaving my family behind, but I knew they’d get along without me just fine. So when I was old enough and was able to take care of myself I headed for Ponyville.

It was so embarrassing…a 19 year old colt without his cutiemark…did I mention I didn’t get my cutiemark till I was 23? I guess that’s pretty important…anyway, I found a nice place in Ponyville, settled down, and life was normal…for a while at least…1 or 2 years later I was out shopping and saw a flyer with a picture of DJ PON-3, a date, and a time. I’ve always been a huge DJ PON-3 fan so of course I went. So I went to the concert, and saw DJ PON-3 in the crowd…or so I thought. Being the charmer I am I aproched her. To my surprise it was just a mare who looked almost exactly like the reknowed DJ, and would change my life forever.

I approached the mare who looked almost identical to the reknowned DJ and noticed DJ PON-3 was already on stage! So I decided to wait till the concert was over to talk to her, just becasue the music was just to damn good to ignore. But about half way through the concert she “accidentally” bumped into me. I turned to face her and see if she was ok. The look in her eyes made me melt on the inside. “S-sorry. I didn’t mean to bump into you. I was just so lost in the music!” I guess my smile was funny looking because she was softly laughing. I shook my head and shot her one of my charming smiles. “It’s fine! No harm was done! I was into the music also so I probably would have bumped into you!” We both laughed until she spoke. “My name’s Violet, Violet Scraton. What’s yours?”

“My name is Psyche!" I said cheerfully. I bowed my head and heard her giggle. It was all so…weird….no mare had ever shown interest in me before. All of sudden this mare is “accidentally” bumping into me at a concert. I didn’t know what to do, so I asked her if she wanted to dance. “I’d love to!” She said. I couldn’t believe it! So we stuck together through the concert. She told me about how her brother died, and how she left everything she had behind in Canterlot…just like I did. We were kindred souls, her and I. When the concert ended I asked if she needed somepony to walk with. She said yes and I walked her home. After that we started seeing each other more and more. Three months after that day we met at that concert we started dating. And those were some of the happiest days of my life.

A Cutiemark and Eternal Despair

So fast forward a to my 23rd birthday. Violet and I had gone out to lunch at Sugar Cube Corner. When we got there we sat down, talked to Pinkie Pie for a bit, and ordered our meals. Everything was normal…for about half of our date. And just when we got our food somepony ran in and yelled “SOMEPONY IS ABOUT TO JUMP OFF OF TOWN HALL!”. The café went silent. I looked at Violet and we both agreed to have a look. We ran as fast as we could to town hall.

Once we got there we saw the pony about to jump. The area had been taped off and all we could do was watch, listen, and argue with the guards who were trying, note that I say "trying", to handle the situation. I could tell they were not helping at all. They were threatening her.

Telling her to come down or they’d have to use force. I was shocked. I couldn’t just stand there and do nothing. So when the guard turned around I ducked under the tape and worked my way into the building. Once inside I looked for the nearest staircase. I had never been in town hall before that, so I had no idea where I was going. I looked around for about five minutes until I found the stairs that led to the roof. I galloped up to the roof as fast as I could. When I got there the mare was just about to take the leap. Tears were running down her face. I slowly made my way over to her. Trying to calm her down all the while. “Hello?” I called out, hoping for a response.

“Wh-who’s there?! D-don’t th-think I w-won’t jump!” She shouted. I made my way over to her and saw the wings covered by her mane. Her coat was a dark grey. I remember her black and white mane flowing freely in the spring breeze. I inched closer to her. "It's ok!" I shouted. I wasn't sure how to approach this situation. I began to wonder why I was even attempting this? What if I just made her jump? And what about Violet?! I hadn't even thought about her! All that wasn't important at the moment. All that mattered was me getting this mare off the roof.

"It's ok...my name is Psyche...Psyche Scraton...I'm a friend. I just want to help." I said softly. All she chuckled and turn to face me. "Yeah...and so are those guards down there." She was terrified. I had to figure out why she was so afraid and why she was up here in the first place. "Forget about them." I told her. "They're nothing more than idiots looking to make a few bits." It was then I heard her giggle. I smiled and took a few steps toward her.

To my surprise and relief she welcomed it. I was starting to win her over. I smiled as she stepped down from the ledge and made her way over to me. “There we go. Now, why don’t you tell me about yourself?” I asked. She smiled and hid her face under her wing to try and avoid my seeing her blush.

“M-my name is E-Eternal Night...” She said shyly. I chuckled and sat down. After which I welcomed her to sit with me. “Nice to meet you Eternal. I only wish it were under better circumstances.” I said. She smiled and sat next to me, laying her head on my shoulder.

We talked for several hours so I won’t bore you all with the entire conversation. But I will tell you this: Her name was Eternal Night, she was born in Phillydelphia, her father was extremely abusive, she only ever had one friend growing up but she wasn’t comfortable telling me her name, and to this day she is the love of my life.

After that day Eternal and I started to see each other more and more often. Violet was away on “business” most of the time so I had plenty of time to spend with Eternal. And I couldn’t have been happier through it all.

Heartbreak and a New Look On Things

Fast forward three years after I met Eternal. Violet and I have broken up and I have been spending a lot more time with Eternal, whom I called “E” for short. Life was good and E had pretty much become my best friend…and perhaps a little more than that…

I couldn't have been happier. Then I noticed she started to look ill. And even more so by the day. So I decided I would take her to see a doctor in town. The hospital had given me his address since they were going bankrupt and wouldn't be able to help me. So, I picked Eternal up from her house outside of town and we walked down to this doctors house.

“Psyche, why are you taking me to this doctor?”, she asked as she looked over to me. “I’m not feeling ill…” “I know, E. But you’ve been acting strange lately…you rarely eat, you’re becoming more and more violent…for Celestia’s sake you ran away to an island for three bloody weeks!” I was beginning to show my concern, and worry for her without meaning to. I looked down at her with pleading eyes.
“I know Eternal…I just….I worry about you…” I said quietly. I wasn’t sure of my feelings for her.

Ever since that day at town hall I noticed she wanted to spend more and more time with me. Violet wasn’t around very much anymore so I always had a bit of free time to spend with E.
“Psyche…” She placed of hoof on my chest and stopped me dead in my tracks. She took my goggles off of my head and looked me straight in the face.

I still remember that warm and comforting smile, her mane flowing gently in the cool morning air. Then she said the six words I’ll never forget for as long as I might live. “Let’s go back to my place.”
This took me by surprise. But what happened next changed everything between Eternal and I. She held that warm smile across her face and and took me by the arm.

“Come on silly! Don’t just stand there with your hoof up your ass! Let’s go!” She said with a burst of joy. I laughed and followed her. It was then I had realized, I’d never actually seen the inside of her house. Sure I’d walked her home on a few occasions but not once had she invited me to come inside. But then, just as we passed by Midnight’s house something strange happened. She stopped and held her stomach as it if were about to fall out.
“Eternal? What’s wrong?” I asked. It was then she started coughing uncontrollably.

“Psyche,” She muttered between coughs. “help…me…” she stopped and turned to me and coughed once more, this time however she was coughing up blood. I panicked. She fell forward, looking almost lifeless. Luckily I was able to catch her before she was able to hit the ground. I looked around, but there nopony in sight.
“HELP! SOMEPONY! ANYPONY!” I yelled. I wasn’t about to lose her. Then I noticed a house that looked familiar. I looked at the mailbox to check the address. Was this my stroke of luck?
“Midnight! Yes!” I exclaimed in joy. “Eternal, you couldn’t have picked a better place to do this.”

I rushed into the house and started searching for Midnight. “DOCTOR? MIDNIGHT! IT’S ME, PSYCHE!……WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?!” It was then I heard hoofsteps coming from the stairs. I sat Eternal on the couch and galloped over to see if it was him. To my surprise it was a mare. She trotted down the stairs slowly shooting a strange glance my way, the kind of glance you get when you accidentally walk in on your sister while she’s taking a shower.

I galloped over with Eternal still passed out on my back. I looked up at the mare with pleading eyes. Her short purple and black mane covering her left eye, and the jacket she wore looked strangely familiar.
“Who are you?” She asked sternly. “What? Did you not just hear me shout my name?!” I shouted. It was then I noticed Eternal shiver slightly and wrap her fore hooves around my neck.

“Psyche…I don’t feel good…” She whimpered. I laid her down on the couch in the living room and knelt beside her, placing a hoof on her cheek.

“It’s alright E, you just lay here and rest. Save your strength.” I said, giving her a warm smile. She smiled at me and kissed me my cheek. A cold rush surged through my body and up my spine. Followed by a feeling of relief. She was still alive and holding on. But how long would this last? I rushed back to the mare who was now joined by a gruff looking stallion. His arm thrown around the cute white coated mare. I couldn’t tell if his coat was a light black or a dark grey but it was one of the two. Tall, very well built, he looked like the spiffing image of one of Princess Celestia’s guards. He stretched his wings and looked down at me as if I were his mortal enemy. “This must be Midnight…” I thought to myself.

“What do you want?” He said with a very stern tone. I replied quickly. “My name is Psyche Scraton, this is my friend Eternal. We were on our way through town and she started coughing up bloo-” I was cut off mid sentence by the mare who stood by Midnight. “What did you say her name was?!”

I jumped slightly. “E-Eternal…Why?” I asked quietly. The mare quickly galloped into the living room and fell to E’s side. She looked E over from head to hoof, and started to weep. I was extremely confused. Who was this mare and how does she know Eternal? What’s going to happen to E?

A Surprise and A Realization

Alright where was I...Ah yes!

I turned back to Midnight. I began to wonder why he just stood there. My best friend was on his couch, and was more than likely dying, this mare friend of his knelt beside her and crying. Why was she so concerned with E? Why the fuck wasn’t Midnight doing anything to help her? I was at my limit.

“Why the hell are you just standing there!?” I yelled. “My friend might be dying, and you’re just going to stand there and watch!?” I began to let my tears fall. I had holding them back for so long now that I couldn’t any longer. I wasn’t about to lose Eternal. She meant so much to me....and I didn’t even know why...I had had enough. I rushed at Midnight and grabbed him.

“Answer me!” I cried. Then, I felt his hooves pressed against my chest. He shoved me off of him and kicked me down the stairs. I could hear E call my name, and I could hear the coughing fit she had right after she did. I was worrying her. And I hated myself for it.

Then I saw Midnight trotting down the stairs. I still remember his dark, eerie figure looming over me. I thought I was going to die.

“Who are you to come into my house unannounced and begin to make demands? I suggest you think before you act next time.” He said menacingly. He made his way over to Eternal. “P-please d-don’t h-hurt me....” she said shyly. E always did have a stuttering problem. I was able to help her with it to an extent. She can’t help but stutter whenever she’s frightened. Midnight smiled at her. “Don’t worry my dear. I’m going to take good care of you.” He said. He was much more calm and gentle now.

He turned to the mare who sat next to Eternal. “Star, could you go grab the first aid kit for me?” He asked her. She wiped the tears from her eyes, nodded, and ran out of the room. I walked in and sat next to Eternal. “It’s ok E...I’m here.” I said with a smile. She looked at me with a look of terror across her face. “Psyche...I’m scared...” She whimpered.

I laid my hoof atop her head and stroked her mane. “It’s ok...I’m not going to let anything bad happen...I promise.” I told her. A few seconds later Star, Midnight’s mare, ran back into the room with a large red box which I assumed was a first aid kit. She was roughly Eternal’s age, if not a little younger. She had a clean white coat and a black and purplish mane. She wore a jacket similar to mine. Very fine tailored...as if she had paid extra to have it made perfectly. She sat next to Midnight and handed him the box.

Midnight took the box and opened it, grabbing a small thermometer. “Thank you Star. Now, you should head back upstairs and rest.” The mare nodded and rushed back up the stairs. He looked down back at E. “Eternal was it?” He asked. She was such a shy mare...She couldn’t find it in herself to answer Aura so she just looked back at me. Midnight took it as a hint that she didn’t want to speak with him because of his attacking me. He sighed and laid his hoof across Eternal’s forehead.

“Yes...she definitely has a high fever...” He said. “Alright missie, open up.” After a brief moment of hesitation Eternal complied and opened her mouth just enough for Aura to place the thermometer under her tongue. “Now just let that sit for a few minutes.” He smiled at her, but she refused to look at him. Midnight let out a weak sigh and turned to me. “Psyche could you come with me please?” He asked. He stood and trotted into the kitchen. I stood and started for the kitchen but Eternal grabbed my vest before I could get out of her reach. I turned back to her.

“What is it?” I asked. She pulled me back to her side and hugged me. “Please Psyche...don’t go...” She begged. “I’m so scared...I need you here beside me...” She began to weep. She tightened her grip on me and cried into my shoulder. I nuzzled her cheek and smiled. “It’s ok,” I told her. “I’ll be right back. I promise.” I started to get up again. But Eternal had taken the thermometer out of her mouth and pulled me back down to her. Then she pressed her lips against mine.

My eyes bursted open in surprise. I didn’t know what to do...I’m a married stallion, and my best friend is kissing me in a strangers living room while, quite possibly, dying in front of me. I slowly began to close my eyes. It was then I finally accepted what I had known for the last 5 months. I was in love with Eternal. I broke the kiss and looked back at E, who was now too embarrassed to look me in the eye.

“Psyche...” She whispered. “I...I love you...” I was overstruck...So much had happened that day. I couldn’t process everything that was happening. I opened my mouth to speak but Aura stopped me. I hadn’t notice him come back into the room but he grabbed me by the shoulder and drug me into the kitchen. I shook loose of his grip and quickly stood up.

“What’s the big idea!?” I shouted. He smacked me and threw me against a wall. “You have no right to be asking questions here!” He yelled. “Give me one reason why I shouldn’t toss you out of might house right now!” I pushed him off of me and fell to the ground. “Because I am not leaving her here!” I screamed. I stood up as quickly as I could and turned to face him.

He was laughing.

“What’s so funny!?” I shouted. He turned back to me and smiled. “You’re alright kid. Strong of heart, and you stick to your guns. Now, we haven’t been formally introduced have we? The name’s Midnight Aura” He chuckled. He was a real tough stallion to read. He could be as serious as possible one second, and a clown the next.

I waited several seconds before answering. I still wasn’t sure if I could trust him or not. Finally I answered.“Psyche...Psyche Scraton...” I scoffed. He held his hoof out to me thinking I would shake it. I thought he must have been mad.

“Why should I shake your hoof when you’ve already smacked me around as much as you have?” I asked him. He merely smirked at me. “Because I could throw you and your friend out on the street right now.” He answered. “You wouldn’t...” I replied. He held that damned smirk for a few more seconds. I sighed and held my hoof out to his and shook it. “Alright, let’s go take care of your marefriend!” He exclaimed. It took me a moment or two to realize what he had said.

“Wait she’s not my marefriend!” I yelled. Aura just laughed. “Then what was that kiss all about, huh?” My mouth dropped. I couldn’t believe he saw that! I was so embarrassed...I didn’t know what to say so I just stood there and nodded. Aura smiled and trotted back into the living room.

Eternal had fallen asleep during my chat with Midnight but she was still breathing, and for that I was thankful. I followed Midnight into the room and knelt beside her. I didn’t know what to do. I looked out the window and saw how dark it had gotten. It must have been near 9:00 PM. Then, Midnight placed his hoof on my shoulder. “Do you have anywhere to be tonight? Any plans or anything of the sort?” He asked. I shook my head and he sighed. “Good, then you and her can stay here for the night. I don’t think she’s in any condition to travel. There’s a room upstairs with bed fit for two. First door on your right. It’s yours if you want it.” He offered. I smiled and hugged him in glee.

“Thank you so much!” I yelled. Then, I turned back to E and smiled. I picked her up and placed her on my back. “Don’t worry Eternal. I promised I wouldn’t let anything bad happen to you, and that’s a promise I intend to keep.” I thought to myself. I went up the stairs and opened the door to the bedroom. It was a small room. But it was good enough to sleep in. I trotted to the bed and laid Eternal down on it. After I worked my way to the opposite side of the bed and laid down next to E.

I smiled and pulled the blanket over us, scooted closer to E, and kissed her cheek. Then, I hugged her tight and whispered in her ear “I love you too, Eternal."

The End of A Short but Worthwhile Journey

View Online

A lot happened in the time E was sick...we never did come to a conclusion as to what it was or how she contracted it. What we did know however, was that she was barely clinging to life for the first few weeks of it all. I never left her side during those trying times. Midnight tried everything he could to cure her.

After that first night at Midnight’s house Eternal and I grew closer. Even more than we had been before. I was always there for her, doing whatever she needed done. I did my best to help Midnight treat her. It might have been because I wanted to help. As if I somehow thought it was my fault she was in this state.

It might have been because I knew now I loved her. It might have been a lot of things. But I knew there was a reason I was so compelled to help. I just didn’t know what it was. So, one day Aura wanted me to do a bit of shopping. Of course I immediately said yes to the request. He gave me a list of things he needed and I ran off.

When I got to the market I started looking around for some of the things on the list. Milk, grain, hay, cereal, wheat flour, etc. As I was grabbing the last thing on Aura’s list I was approached by a rather familiar looking mare. “Hey! Psyche!” She called. I turned to face her and to my surprise, it was Violet.

My mouth dropped. “V-Violet!? What are you....where have you...” I began to speak but she stopped me mid-sentence. “Where have I been?! I could ask you the same fucking thing!” She screamed. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere for weeks!” My ears folded back in embarrassment.

Then I noticed the engagement ring on her horn. It wasn’t the one I had given her. “Well first off, you have been in and out for months without even speaking a word to me. And second, I wait for you to come back from “business” for months. I’m gone for a few days and you get remarried!?”

She took a few steps back. “We-well I...I didn’t...Psyche...I have needs too ya know!” She scoffed. I was appalled. “Well you know what? I don’t even care.” I said. “Because do you know who was there for me the whole time you weren’t? You know who was more of a friend to me the last couple of months than you have been since we met?”

She turned away from me and began to laugh. “I couldn’t care less, Psyche. I have things to do, ponies to see, place to be.” She said as she galloped away, leaving behind only a trail of tears. I sighed and grabbed a box of cereal, went through checkout, and ran back to Aura’s place as fast as I possibly could.

I just wanted to never see Violet again, or have to worry about her for as long as I might live. If only things had ended up that way.

I got back to Midnight’s house and ran inside. Aura was tending to Eternal as per usual. I made my way into the kitchen and started to put away groceries. Before I could finish I was joined by Midnight in the kitchen. I turned to face him and forced a smile as best I could. He looked very tired and in need of a nap at the very least.

“How is she?” I asked. He shook his his head and sighed. “Not too well..her fever is getting worse every day and there isn’t much I can do to fix it. I’m doing all I can for her Psyche...but I fear there’s not much more I can do to prevent her from getting worse...All we can do now is wait for the inevitable.”

My fake smile quickly left my face and I looked to the ground. I couldn’t bear to face him after that, less I break out into tears. Finally I spoke. “C-can I see her?” He nodded and I ran into the living room. I made my way over to Eternal and knelt beside her. I couldn’t help but smile when I was near her.

“Hey E...” I said softly. As she turned to face me I felt myself melt a little inside. I was so happy when I got to talk to her. Then I began to remember what Aura had said...”All we do now is wait for the inevitable.” The words ran through my head a dozen times. Maybe more. I wasn’t about to let her go. I couldn’t. I knew I was in love with her...but I was unsure if my own feelings were true.

Finally she opened her mouth to speak. “Hi Psyche.” She said with a smile. Oh that smile. There was never a time when I thought it wasn’t beautiful. I loved making her smile, and hearing her laugh. It was one of things I loved about her. Of that, I was sure. “How are you feeling?” I asked.

Her happy expression quickly faded for a moment. “I’ve been getting worse...at least that’s what Aura was saying...but now...” She hesitated.”I feel better now that you’re back.” She said with a smile. Hearing her say that made me forget all about her illness, Violet, and Aura. It was just us. Here in this moment.

I wanted to tell her I loved her. I wanted to ask her to always be with me. But...I was afraid of losing her as quick as I got her. Finally I worked up the courage to say something. “Eternal...I love you...and I want to stay by you through all of this...and hope we can...start a life together.” I said. Eternal’s face lit up like a firework.

“Psyche...I...I don’t know what to say!” she exclaimed. “I’m so happy that you feel that wa-” she began to say, only to be cut off by a sudden coughing fit. Of course this was a normal thing...but not with so much blood... Of course this caught me by surprise and I jumped up and panicked. I looked around the room, scanning for something that could possibly help.

Finally, the coughing came to a halt. I turned back to Eternal. “E?” I said...”E?!” Still no response. “ETERNAL!” I screamed. I rushed over to her as quickly as I could. “E! Please don’t joke around like this! Please, open your eyes! Something!...Anything...”

Tears began to fall. I grabbed hold of her lifeless husk, crying more then than I ever thought I would.

I’m leaving it there. For the sheer fact that...I have nothing else to tell...she died in my hooves. And that was that. It’s been five years since then...and I felt the need to jot this all down so that at least someone might hold her memory after I’ve left. She had no family. She had no friends. She had never gotten to know love. And now I doubt she ever will. Maybe one day we’ll see each other again. Maybe we’ll have our chance at eternity. I don’t know the answer...but I’m sure I’ll find one. Thank you all for reading. I only ask you to hold on to what you have in your life. And cherish it. Don’t let it slip away like I did. And when it does, chase it. Don’t let it go without trying to protect it. Keep it safe. Don’t let anyone tell you it isn’t worth fighting for. Don’t let anyone fool you and make you think there’s no hope. Cherish whatever you hold sacred. Love it. Keep it alive for as long as you are physically able to. And when it slips away with no hope of you getting it back, get lost in the music.
