Prologue
(Small Town Wisconsin in the USA)
I yawn as I turn off my TV and Xbox system after looking at my watch to find it to be after midnight, and finally deciding that I had stayed up late enough already I quickly set about going to sleep. So after a quick trip to the bathroom after having turned my stuff off I lay down on my futon and close my eyes letting the constant noise of my fan drown out any other noises as it keeps my room nice and cool. Suddenly feeling very cold I wrap up in my blanket and enter the realm of dreams, drifting away into my mind I failed to realize the literal drifting sensation I was feeling before I finally fell asleep.
(Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, Canterlot, Equestria, Testing room B)
A young lavender unicorn filly watches with wide eyes as an Earth pony stallion pushes a cart with a shiny blue egg as big as she is into the room from the side entrance. Soon the stallion stops pushing and retreats back out the doors he came in with the cart, the filly still froze by the sheer beauty of the egg having completely forgotten where she was and what she was meant to be doing. It wasn't until a rather loud and rude clearing of a throat does the young unicorn snap out of her daze, and with a bright blush turns to the panel of instructors for the school who would be observing her test to see if she was ready for the school. Though by this point in the process the filly or colt have already been accepted the teachers just wish to see what they do when confronted with an impossible task.
Seeing that the young filly's attention was on him the lead instructor began "Twilight Sparkle your final test before being accepted into Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, you must get this egg to hatch." He instructs her gruffly as he looks on feeling this filly was far too young to go to Celestia's school just yet.
The now named filly, Twilight Sparkle, gulps but nods all the same after glancing over at her parents in the observers' seats meant for anyone who wished to sit in on the final test for moral support of the applicant. Steeling her nerves the young Twilight takes a few deep breaths and begins to push magic into her horn with the target being the egg and the desired outcome being it hatching.
After twenty-five minutes the time was nearly up for young Twilight Sparkle as she tried everything she could think of, she even climbed up on top of it and sat on it like a bird. As she climbed down with her head hanging low she feels tears sting at the corner of her eyes as she speaks "I'm sorry for wasting your time, I'll g...." she was cut off as a thunderous boom and blinding rainbow of light filled the sky outside and flooded the room.
While the other ponies were stunned and blinded momentarily they are suddenly feeling their coats stand on end as the power in the room spikes as raw magic floods out from the startled filly. Wild and uncontrolled the raw magic picked up the now fearful and clear-eyed proctors. Before they each lose consciousness from the overwhelming power, next a beam shot out to the parents with a blinding flash leaving them potted plants. Finally, a beam strikes the egg causing cracks to form along its exterior.
All this time during her surge the filly is screaming a blood-curdling scream, her mind blank from the burning of the magic flooding out of her. The filly hears behind her scream a cracking sound before all she knows is blank white.
(A few months before)
I awake to nothing but pure darkness, which I tried to blink away only for it to remain. I also felt I was inside something way to small to hold me and that I was bent over and under myself in inhuman ways. So at this point, I began to freak the fuck out as I thrashed and bashed against my prison as best I could with my uncoordinated and changed body. Or at least that is what would have happened had I been able to move at all.
So after what felt like forever I finally calmed down enough, or rather I burned out my panic and anger rather sooner than I would've thought since I couldn't move or show any visceral signs of my distress at being trapped in a dark place and unable to move. Oh add on top of that that I am no longer human and I just felt numb, suddenly as I was getting accustomed to the dark and quiet of my prison, I felt something move it and that's when I noticed voices.
"Hey is that an egg? Where did it come from and what happened to the meteor that crashed here?" A masculine voice asked out loud and from further away than the shell of my prison, now known to be an egg. I feel my egg being rolled this way and that making me feel very sick to my stomach as a second feminine voice replies.
"Yes it's an egg," the raspy female voice grunts in annoyance before continuing "and I think that this egg is the meteor we were hunting."
The rolling around suddenly stops as I hear footsteps nearing my egg and when the male's voice begins again it sounds closer. "Stop rolling it around like a toy, Daring! We should bring this to the Princess right away, she'll know what to do." the stoic male states before I feel myself and my egg being lifted up and before long are gently placed inside something warm.
I hear the guy muttering to himself "So glad I came prepared to carry something fragile in my saddlebags." By this point, I feel myself fading into sleep as with a few soft beats of wind I feel whoever is carrying me lift off gently and I am lulled to sleep by the steady beating of the wings.
(Canterlot Castle, Throne room)
A tall and matronly mare sits on her throne, her alabaster coat shining in the light of her sun through the window as she settles her rump into the cushion getting ready for a day of complaints from the nobles and rediculous proposals that would have her and her ponies giving the noble more bits for free. This mare sporting a pair of large angelic wings and a long horn on her head is known far and wide by man as Princess Celestia harbinger of the sun and devoured of cakes. Though that last part is only in hushed whispers whenever there is some article about her highnesses eating habits.
Noding to the guard stallion at the large double doors to begin she settles back ready for a boring day. After the guard returns from the other side of the doors following him is a pair of pegasi that she recognizes and offers a warm smile to the pair.
One is a tan coated mare with dark grey and lighter grey wind swept mane, she's wearing her usual pith helmet and cargo shirt. The other is a rather colorful stallion with a bright blue coat and a wild mane of bright pink hair, he wasn't wearing much besides a pair of saddlebags one of which had something large and round inside.
"Hello, Daring and Skylark. How are my two favorite adventurers doing today?" Princess Celestia greets them once the large door they entered through is shut. Both pegasi smile back at their old friend and ruler offering mock bows before her.
"Well Tia, first have you massacred any cakes recently?" Daring jokes with a wink getting a giggle from her husband and her friend. "Well anyway, we were out in the boonies hunting for another lost temple when the night sky lit up with a bright light. Looking up we spotted a flaming ball of something falling to the earth not far from where we had camped." Celestia nods with a look of interest on her muzzle.
The blue stallion picks up for his wife, "So we decided to go check out this meteor that had appeared out of nowhere and had burned so bright." Skylar moves his head to open the saddlebag side that held the mysterious object that Celestia now realized was radiating magic.
This of course was noticed by the mare who nodded "yes we noticed the deep magic too when we found it. That's why we brought it to you, Tia." By now the stallion had opened the flap and pulled out this large cobalt blue egg. That seemed to radiate magical power now that it was free from the special pouch meant to contain dangerous magical artifacts that the duo find in their hunts.
"An egg?" Tia questions for the two to nod in answer. "Are you saying that this egg was the meteor you saw?" She continued gathering another nod from the pair.
Before long the married couple was leaving the throne room without the magical egg, since the Princess tried to hatch it with her magic but couldn't. So after finding that out she came up with an idea to use it as an impassible test for her school.
(back to the present in Testing room B)
I startle away to an overpowering sensation as power floods into my egg and that's when I hear some little girl screaming in such a heartbreaking way. A scream that told of unknowable pain that made one's heart skip a beat, Soon the power was too much for my egg to contain and it began to crack letting in blinding light as the power continued to grow.
Soon my egg exploded into a hundred different shards as I'm suddenly blinded and feel the power brimming within me. It was like I was full yet someone kept pushing more and more into me. I began to thrash about in my legless form hissing in pain as my wings flutter eratically as I feel something connect within the back of my mind.
Suddenly when I felt like I was about to pop from too much power I feel it being drained away, well not really drained but directed to flow into a larger container to hold it. And as the power started to fade my eyes opened to find a large room around me, but what held my attention was the pair of ponies nearby. One was a towering horse of a pony with wings and a glowing golden horn while the other was a tiny purple unicorn filly whose eyes were clenched shut with tears raining from her face.
Suddenly feeling the need to comfort the filly I find myself slithering towards the edge of the cart my egg was on, by now the power has disappeared and my movement has caught their attention. The filly even opening her eyes and upon seeing a winged snake as large as she was she was about to scream once more when suddenly the cobalt blue snake launched itself off the edge of the wagon and towards her.
I felt myself moving without my thought as the only thing in my mind was to comfort the filly, to stop her pain and tears. I hardly even noticed I was gliding towards her or the towering mare's horn lighting up to catch me. Though my desire to reach the filly seemed to overpower the mare's magic as I flew across the short distance and landed on the filly's back.
(Testing Room B)
Celestia stared in shock at the strange reptile on the wagon that had come from the egg she couldn't hatch. It was a striking blue with darker black scales scattered about with wings coming from its sides a bit behind the spiky head as its shimmering sky blue eyes were locked on the filly she had just saved from a magic surge.
The princess was getting lost in thought at to what this creature is when suddenly it launched itself off the wage and was making a rush to the filly with its fanged mouth open and hissing. Of course, she tried to catch it in her magic but her grip faltered as it was like trying to pick up a slippery eel. As it reaches the poor filly its size being near to the filly's own it knocked her over and began to coil itself around her gently while giving gentle hisses and nuzzles to the filly's chin.
This put the princess into further shock as this was so far out there that she had no idea what was going on. At this point, the potted plants that were in the room flashed back into being a pair of unicorn ponies who were confused until their eyes landed on their child being wrapped up by some large snake. Seeing this Twilight Velvet and Night Light begin to rush to free their frightened daughter from the snake when they are stopped short and next to their princess as Twilight giggles and returns the nuzzle and hug to the snake.
"thank you. Yes, I'm feeling better now, though I still don't know what happened." the filly stated confusing the adults further as they had only heard the snake hissing while nodding its head to the filly.
The mother clears her throat getting the pair's attention as she stutters out as her baby girl had always been deathly afraid of snakes yet she was here hugging one with a smile. "Um, Twilight why are you hugging that snake? We don't know if he'll bite you"
Turning to the snake still coiled around her like a big hug the filly asks the blue snake "You wouldn't bite me would you?" the snake shakes its head rapidly while the filly turns back to her parents still not having noticed the Alicorn there as well. "See she said the very idea a-a-apallad-ap....."
As she struggles with the word the snake used her father asks "Do you mean sickens her, sweetie? Also, how do you know it's a she?" He asks. To which the filly giggled and looked to her dad like he didn't already know.
"Well because she just said so, didn't you hear her?" she asks with a tilt to her head confused as to why her parents were acting like they couldn't hear the snake as it babbled on about how happy she was to meet the filly.
The parents look to each other to see if the other had heard anything other than the hissing from the snake to shake their head to each other before turning back to Twilight "Um no all we hear from the snake are hisses"
Celestia had been studying the strange snake while they talked spoke up "Excuse me, my little ponies. But I think Twilight can understand the snake because their souls are linked." Which brought the filly's attention to her.
At the sight of the Princess right there before her, Twilights brain overloaded and with her eyes rolling back she falls over knocked out from the stress and overload. Much to the concern of the snake, her parents, and the Princess who all hurry to try and catch the filly.
