Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle. Two girls who had been through a lot together. After everything that happened between them at the Friendship Games and Camp Everfree they both began to feel something for each other, but neither acted and Twilight began to date another boy, Timber Spruce. Eventually they broke apart and her feelings for Sunset resurfaced, feelings Sunset had never lost. It took a push from their friends but they ended up together and for the last few months they couldn’t have been happier.

Both girls had aspirations beyond Canterlot High and after graduating were both accepted into the prestigious Canterlot College. They both had decided to focus their studies on Chemistry, although they felt that something else might be their true calling. They weren’t sure what would happen with their friends from CHS considering how difficult the college is to get into. However fate often has a way of keeping things together that should never be parted and all their friends managed to get in too. Each of them having their own subjects to study ranging from music to cooking, business, art and design, athletics and biology. Each of them had their own place to stay after leaving their parents homes, be it sharing an apartment with their significant other or taking dorm rooms at the college.

Sunset had passed her driving test and had an old beat up car. She lived close enough to the college that she didn’t have to move into a dorm and could stay in her apartment. Twilight on the other hand didn’t want to leave home. She had never been on her own before and certainly didn’t want to share a dorm with strangers. Instead she thought she would stay at home and get the bus to and from college. However the long transit, late nights and early mornings were likely to leave her shattered with no time for her friends and this was something that worried her greatly. Sunset offered to treat her to a snack a month before college was due to start and the pair agreed to meet at Sugarcube Corner.

Twilight walked in and saw her yellow skinned lover sitting in a booth with her own grape smoothie, waiting for Twilight. She waved and Twilight ordered herself an orange smoothie before taking her seat opposite Sunset.

“Hey Twi. I noticed you’d been out of it for a bit and I thought you might want to talk about it over a snack.” She offered Twilight an apple fritter.

Twilight tried to fake a smile, something noticed by Sunset and took a bite of one of the fritters.

“Thanks Sunny, I just don’t know what to do. I’m not ready to be alone, but travelling would kill me if I stayed at home for College. I’d have no time for our friends, or you. And that’s something I just can’t deal with. I don’t want to take a dorm room either and I’ve already told you why.”

Sunset thought for a moment before taking her hand and replying.

“Well, why don’t you move in with me? We’ve been dating a while now after all and we’ve been friends for what seems like forever.”

Twilight smiled. “That’s a great idea Sunny! You live close to the college so the commute would be much shorter and I’d have much more time for our friends, plus I can always visit my family on break sometimes.”

Sunset giggled. “Yeah. But that’s not what I meant. Twilight I love you and I would love it if you moved in with me. You’re just thinking about what it means for your academics which is totally just like you. You didn’t think about what it means for us, did you?”

Twilight looked a little embarrassed. “No, I guess I didn’t. If I move in then we’ll be together all the time. We’ll wake up next to each other, eat together, study together and attend classes together. It sounds wonderful. I’m sorry I didn’t see that at first.”

Sunset smiled and gripped her hand tighter. “It’s fine Twilight, I know how you can be. This is a big step for you. Someone so sheltered moving out into the world. But even though you won’t have your parents all the time anymore. You’ll have me, and all our friends. I’m glad I can be the one to guide you into the real world.”

They finished their smoothies as Twilight’s face suddenly fell.

“Twi. What’s wrong?”

“I’m going to have to tell my parents. Oh dear, this could be awkward. We’ve been friends for years but we’ve only dated for a few months. What will they think when I say I’m moving in with you?”

“Twi, you know your own parents. They’ll understand and support you. Especially if they know it’s me you’re moving in with. I’ll come with you and help you tell them, then we can get some of your basics and move them over today. We can come back for anything bigger later. Does that sound ok honey?”

Twilight took a deep breath and smiled.

“Sure Sunny. Thank you so much.”

Hand in Hand they left the little cafe and entered Sunset’s car, driving nearby to the house of Twilight Velvet and Night Light. Twilight’s Parents. Once they pulled up they entered the house and the parents were sitting in the living room seemingly relaxing with nothing particular happening.

Twilight cleared her throat attracting their attention.

“Mom, Dad. I’ve got something to tell you. If I stay here, I’ll be dead on my feet at college. The journey would be too long and too early every day, I’d never have time for other important things in my life. Which is why I. I...I…” She couldn’t finish her sentence so Sunset grabbed her hand.

“She wants to move in with me, I have an apartment not far from the college and a car. We’ve been friends for a long time and as you know we’ve been dating for a few months now. I hope it’s not too soon but this is her decision to make. I hope you understand.”

Twilight’s mother and father looked at each other and then back to the couple, smiling. Her mother was the first to speak.

“We wondered when this day would come. Truthfully we thought Twilight may never mature enough to want to leave home, certainly not all on her own. But with a girl like you by her side Sunset I think she’ll be just fine.”

Her father called her over and sat her down on his knee like she was still a child.

“Twilight my girl. You’re growing up, you’re off to college and you’re old enough to make your own decisions in life. I’m glad you’ve got someone by your side just like Velvet was for me. You’re always welcome back here and I hope you’ll still come by for the holidays.”

“Thanks mom and dad. But honestly you’re right, I don’t think I would have ever left without Sunny to guide me. I’m happy we finally came together after so long admiring each other.”

Sunset pulled her in for a kiss as she blushed beet red and pulled away quickly.

“Sunny! Not in front of my parents!”

Her parents and Sunset laughed as she stood embarrassed.

“Come on then Twi, we got a month before college starts and I want to help you get settled in. Let’s pack up some of your stuff and get going shall we?”

Hand in hand they ascended the stairs towards what would be the last time Twilight called this place her home.

Settling In

It didn’t take long for Twilight to move her belongings. Her computer fit into one box while her beloved books fit into a few more. She packed all her clothes and reluctantly left Spike with her parents. She knew she would be back for holidays and he was happy there, happier than he would be in a dingy apartment she thought. With her father helping to place the last box in the back of Sunset’s car, hand in hand with Sunset Twilight crossed the threshold of her parent’s front door one final time.
After they made it to Sunset’s house it took a short while to get the boxes into her apartment before Twilight sat on the couch and Sunset smiled at her.

“Well Twi, welcome to our home. I know you’ve been here before but now it’s your home too. Washing Machine is there, pots and pans are in there, there’s the refrigerator and freezer, oh and I usually keep other groceries in those upper cupboards. Bathroom is over there and there’s only one room, sorry. So we’re sharing a bed. Not that you had a problem with that before.” She pointed out each location as she explained the layout and smirked at her final comment.

Twilight blushed momentarily before regaining her composure.

“Thanks Sunny, I’m glad we’re sharing a room honestly. I don’t think I’d ever want to leave your side. Thank you for letting me move in with you, I promise to be the best girlfriend I can be and support you to the best of my abilities.”

“Don’t sweat it Twi, I’ll help you out whenever you need it too. I’d say we’ll both be motivating each other when it comes to all the work college is going to give us. In the meantime, would you like to go out tonight? To celebrate our first day living together.”

“That sounds wonderful. How about a movie?”

“Sure thing Twi. I’m sure there’s something good on. We could grab some dinner, head out to the movie and take a nice walk through the park to end the evening. Sound good?”

“Sounds great Sunset. But first, I know another way we can celebrate.” She smirked before wrapping her arms around Sunset and kissing her. They embraced for a few tender moments before parting, each with a loving smile on their face.

After unpacking all her things Twilight sat on the couch and watched some cartoons while Sunset microwaved them some pasta meals.

“Is this all you eat Sunset? Don’t you cook?”

“It always seemed so daunting, so much to remember and get just right to make anything worthwhile. I never bothered since these were pretty good anyway. Maybe sometime.”

Twilight thought to herself. “She can’t keep this up forever. If she won’t cook then I will. I don’t know how but I’m sure I can learn, her birthday is coming up soon too. I could cook her a birthday dinner! Maybe a friend could teach me how.”

They enjoyed their food before setting out to the local movie theatre. Rarity told them about a new movie just released called Love by Midnight, they thought it would be a nice romantic date movie knowing Rarity’s tastes. There was a line of customers all the way out the door of the place however to their delight, this was for the new Daring Do movie and in fact after getting their snacks they found the movie they were seeing had nobody else in the room at all. Part way through, Twilight shifted into Sunset’s lap and cuddled her head into her girlfriend’s neck. Snuggling together they enjoyed the movie before timing a kiss to the exact scene of the movie where the hero kissed his lady. Hand in hand they left giggling.

“Wow, that was beautiful but really corny, like seriously. M’lady? This isn’t medieval Europe.” Twilight giggled.

“Yeah, and the scene where the guy kissed her hand. I mean that’s real romantic in the movies but I don’t think that kind of thing works in real life.” Sunset chuckled.

Twilight smirked and grabbed Sunset’s hand placing a gentle kiss on top.

“So M’lady, shall we verily return to our royal chambers posthaste?”

Sunset smirked. “Very well M’lady, let us proceed with the remainder of our evening escapades.”

They both burst out laughing as they made their way to the nearby park. Together they sat down on a bench and cuddled into each other as the evening got a bit colder.

“Y’know, back in Equestria we had a pony who watched over the night. She soothed ponies dreams and crafted beautiful night skies as she raised the moon, all the stars and constellations were made by her to light up the darkness. Her name was Luna, yep, just like our old vice principal. I’d be happy to tell you anything you want to know about Equestria honey, if you’re still interested in it of course.” Sunset smiled.

“Thank you Sunset, but right now I’m just happy being with you. Maybe there was a time when I would have done anything for knowledge, but we both know where that led. I’m not like that anymore, but I still appreciate the thought.”

After Twilight pointed out a few constellations in the clear night sky they walked hand in hand back to their shared apartment. Upon entering they discarded their coats and walked into the bedroom together with Twilight blushing the whole time.

“What’s up Twi?”

“Nothing, It’s just. We haven’t seen each other with so little clothing since our first date. I’m a little embarrassed about what you’ll think."

“It’s ok Twilight. You don’t have to change in front of me, you can go into the bathroom or something if it’s too much for you.”

“No, I’ll have to do it eventually so it might as well be now.”
She proceeded to strip to her underwear and allow Sunset a good look at her body.

“Well Twi, you look gorgeous. A little thin maybe but that’s not always a bad thing. Alright then, my turn I guess.”

Sunset did the same and Twilight’s jaw dropped.

“Woah, I knew you were pretty but this is just, wow. You have a great figure, and a nice tone to your stomach and arms. Boy did I get lucky or what.”

Now it was Sunset’s turn to blush.

“Really Twi? I always thought I was a bit chubby, not enough to do anything about it like some of the girls at CHS, I swear they would do anything to be supermodel thin. But like I still thought I had a bit of a belly on me.”

“It makes you all the more lovable Sunset. Now let’s put on our PJs and get some shut eye.”

They changed and crawled under the sheets together. Twilight cuddled her head once again into Sunset’s neck, a position that made her feel very safe and comfortable. Sunset in turn wrapped her arms around Twilight and pulled her closer. They drifted off eager to see what the next day had in store.

Still Much to Learn

The next day Twilight awoke to find Sunset already awake but still holding her, she looked up into her lover’s eyes and smiled.

“Good morning sleepyhead. Man I could lie like this all day Twi. You’re so soft and cuddly.”

“I’m not a plush toy Sunset.” She giggled. “But I do admit this is heavenly.” She sighed in bliss. “If I can wake up like this every morning, I think I’ll be very happy.”

After some coaxing Sunset finally released Twilight with a pout saying. “Fine but you owe me snuggles later.” As Twilight giggled and the pair made their way to the kitchen for breakfast. Cereal was on the menu and Twilight ate in relative silence, still lamenting that she couldn’t cook yet. Something she hoped to remedy today.

“Sunny, I’m going out for a bit. I’ll be back later OK?”

“Twi, I’m your girlfriend not your mom, you don’t need my permission to go out you know. I’ll see you later sweetie.” Sunset kissed her goodbye.

Once outside Twilight thought about who could help her learn to cook. First her thoughts turned to Applejack believing that if her grandmother was the lunch lady at CHS then Applejack must know the basics. However she discarded that thought when she considered Pinkie Pie. As Pinkie was going to study Home Economics and Cookery at Canterlot College plus the fact she’d heard Pinkie taught her girlfriend Vinyl Scratch how to cook too, Twilight knew who the right choice was. She called the number and Pinkie picked up on the other side.

“Hi hi, you’ve reached Pinkie Pie, what can I do ya for?”

“Hi Pinkie, it’s Twilight. Listen, Sunset’s birthday is coming up soon and I want to cook her a delicious dinner. But I’ve never cooked in my life. I heard you taught Vinyl to cook, so do you think you could teach me?”

“Sure thing Twilight. If Scratchie here can learn to cook then anyone can. Whatcha looking to make her?”

“I don’t really know. She’s vegetarian but I don’t know anything good I could make.”

“Well it’s a good thing momma Pinkie’s here Twilight, I know just the thing and we’ve got everything here to make it, come on over and I’ll show you the steps. I’m sure a smarty pants like you can remember a few instructions.”

“Thank you Pinkie, I’ll be right over.” She hung up and began the walk to Pinkie and Vinyl’s apartment. Knocking the door she was greeted by Vinyl.

“Oh hey Twilight, sup girl? Been a while.”

“Hi Vinyl. Pinkie told me she’d help me learn to cook for Sunset’s birthday coming up.”

“No kiddin? So that’s why she’s setting all that stuff out, I don’t question her crazy anymore honestly, I just roll with it.” Vinyl chuckled. “But yeah if there’s one gal that can help you cook a rockin’ dinner it’s Pinkie. She taught my lazy butt how to cook for pete’s sake.”

“Well I’m sure you’re not bad yourself now too.” Twilight smiled.

“Yeah I guess, but she’s the real chef. She’s gonna study that crud at college too, dunno what she’s gonna do with it but hey. Whatever she wants to do, I got her back.”

Twilight was shown to the kitchen area where Pinkie had all the ingredients set aside for a vegetable pasta bake.

“Alright Twilight. You want Shimmy to love her birthday don’t you? Then this is the perfect piece to make her smile. Plenty of flavor, healthy too and super easy once you know what to do.”

Twilight beamed as she slowly chopped up fresh vegetables and simmered them in a pot of canned tomatoes making her own sauce. A few herbs and spices followed before the mixture was placed in a baking dish with some pasta and mixed thoroughly. Finally it was placed in the oven to bake, removed shortly before completion to sprinkle cheese over the top and allow it to melt without burning. Once finished the three girls taste tested the dish and all agreed it was a success.

“Wow Pinkie, this is great, I can’t believe I did it. But don’t you usually have to follow a recipe or something for this kind of thing?”

“Cooking isn’t that strict honestly. You just need your ingredients and cooking time. Everything else you can just do on the fly. Sure with baking you have to get all the measurements right but for this stuff, it’s easy.”

“Well, it’s a start. But I kinda want to get her an actual present too. I have no idea what she’d like though. This will be her first birthday where I’m living with her so I want it to be special. With a present from the heart.”

“Well, me and Scratchie were going to hit up the mall later, wanna come with? You might find something cool.”

“Sure, if I’m not intruding in your personal time.”

“Nah girl, Pinks and I can totally help you find something kick butt to give your gal.” Vinyl said putting an arm around Twilight.

Pinkie and Vinyl dressed for the day as the three girls made their way to the mall together.

“Well, if you two need me you know where I’ll be.” Vinyl said heading for the music store.

“Oh Scratchie, of course you’d go there first. Well come on Twilight, let’s check out the clothes shops.”

After half an hour they failed to find anything. The same with the music store, game store and toy store.

“Let’s just face facts Pinkie, I don’t know what she’d like. It could be staring me in the face in one of these stores and I wouldn’t even know it. If only I knew someone who could think like me to ask.”

Pinkie thought for a moment. “Why don’t you ask yourself?”

Twilight was puzzled. “Pinkie, that’s absurd. How can I ask myself if I don’t know the answer?”

“Not you you, the other you. Doesn’t Sunset have a magical book thingy she talks to her with?”

Twilight realised what Pinkie meant. “Ohh, Princess Twilight. That’s not a bad idea Pinkie. But I’ll need a distraction to use the book unnoticed.”

“Leave that to me Twi Twi, you get home and think about what you’re gonna ask.”

Twilight returned home and embraced her girlfriend before they sat down for dinner and videogames.

“Hey Twi, it’s my turn to go out now. Pinkie and Vinyl want me to hit up the nightclub with em. I’ll be back later but Pinkie said it’s probably not your kind of thing. I’m sure you’ll be fine without me for a bit.” She kissed Twilight before leaving the apartment.

Twilight looked around and found the familiarly emblazoned book before opening to a blank page and writing.

“Ok, so how does this thing work?”

“Sunset? You know how the book works, who is this?”

“Hello, my name is Twilight Sparkle. I hope I’m talking to the other Twilight from that parallel world.”

“Hello Twilight. Yes I am Princess Twilight of Equestria, why are you using Sunset’s book?”

“It's her birthday soon and I have no idea what to get her. I was hoping you might have some ideas.”

“I know just the thing. Meet me outside the CHS portal on Thursday night.”

“Thank you so much Princess.”

She closed the book and sat down to another book, this time it was one she could read instead of writing in.

A Pair of Twilight

Chapter 4: A Pair of Twilight

The next few days were uneventful as Twilight and Sunset stayed beside each other watching TV, Twilight watched Sunset play some video games and some more frozen dinners ensued. Twilight knowing that would soon change. As the fateful night approached around 5PM Twilight tried in vain to sneak out.

“Going somewhere Twi?” Said Sunset from the couch.
“Oh, yeah I was just going for a walk. It’s a lovely evening.”

“Want me to come with you?”

“No no, It’s fine Sunny, Keep playing your video games honey. I’ll be back soon.”

She breathed a sigh of relief as she left the apartment, thankful that Sunset had bought her excuse. Beginning her walk she made it to Canterlot High where a few moments later out of the portal at the base of the statue appeared a girl not too dissimilar to her. The major differences being she wore a pleated skirt similar to what Twilight herself wore a few years ago at school and also a similar blue polo shirt with long purple boots, she also had her hair long and loose rather than tied up like Twilight did and had no need for glasses.

“Ok.” Twilight began. “How do we do this without confusing ourselves?”

Princess Twilight thought for a moment. “Well, I shouldn’t need to be here for too long but if it makes things easier, just call me Princess.”

Princess Twilight’s stomach then rumbled.

“Well Princess, it sounds like you could use some food.”

Princess Twilight blushed sheepishly. “Sorry, I was so excited to come back I guess I skipped dinner, Sunset and you girls can usually handle things on your own so I don’t need to come here often. It’s nice to get out of being a princess for just one evening.”

“Well come on, I’ll treat you to dinner, it’s the least I can do. I know a great place.”

The two girls made their way to Sweet Snacks Cafe and took a booth after placing their orders.

“So Twilight. You and Sunset, how did that one happen?”

“Well, it started at the friendship games. You know what happened there right?”

“I kind of remember but maybe you could remind me.”

Twilight took a deep breath.
“I was a student at Crystal Prep Academy. A rival school to CHS. Every year we had an inter school competition called the Friendship Games, a bit of a stupid name considering how competitive it was but I hear it’s a lot friendlier now. Anyway, Principal Cinch wanted me to compete and I thought it would be a good chance to study the magic around the school. Turns out my amulet was absorbing the magic and Cinch made me release it all at once. It corrupted me and turned me into a demon, I tore holes to your world and if Sunset hadn’t taken the rest of the magic and stopped me, I could’ve been a threat to 2 worlds just because of my stupid curiosity.”

She sighed and shed a single tear.

“Well after that I transferred to CHS and Sunset took me into her friend group. The girls were all really nice to me. They helped me learn about friendship and try to get over my demons. We went on a school trip over summer break to Camp Everfree where we got these geodes that gave us magical powers. I was afraid of my magic, still haunted by the demon that took over. But Sunset convinced me to release it and help bring down the camp counsellor who had gone power mad and turned into a forest demon herself. After that I started dating the other counsellor Timber Spruce but that didn’t last long. Eventually I realised I’d always loved Sunset and with some help from our friends, I found out she loved me too. So we’ve been together ever since, I moved in with her recently too.”

Princess Twilight stared wide eyed. “Wow, to think the same girl we defeated and left face down in the dirt would save the life of another in the same way. Sunset’s certainly come far since those days. I’m glad she has you girls, and it sounds like she’s done a world of good for you specifically.”

Princess Twilight opened her bag and revealed a small plush pony, hoof stitched with her own colours, one difference being no alicorn wings and a small pair of detachable glasses.

“Wow, this is how we would look in the other world isn’t it?”

“I got our Rarity to model it after me, but with no wings and a pair of glasses to make sure she knew it was from you. Maybe this can remind her of her old home. And being a representation of you makes it more sentimental to her. I know she’ll love it.”

“Thank you so much Princess.”

Their food came and Princess Twilight struggled to use her fork to eat her salad. She slowly got the hang of it with a few chuckles from Twilight.

“Ugh, I don’t know how your world functions without magic. It makes things so much easier.”

Twilight giggled. “But aren’t there ponies in your world that eat with their hooves? I thought only unicorns could do magic.”

“Well yes, but I never had that problem.” She chuckled. “Regardless, talent varies between unicorns anyway. I’m an Alicorn now with traits of all three pony races and much more powerful magic, though I was pretty gifted even before when I was a unicorn.”

Twilight slumped and fidgeted with her geode. “I can still barely use the magic this thing gives me. You’d think Telekinesis would be easier to control.”

“Magic is like everything else, it takes time to learn. You’ll get the hang of it eventually. Like I said, not every pony has the same skills. Some can barely lift things while others are far more gifted but even then there’s powerful advanced magic like teleportation and flight that I’ve only ever seen a few ponies perform. I’m sure great unicorns of the past like Starswirl the Bearded could perform such feats but in this day and age it’s much rarer. Of all the unicorns I know, only Starlight, Sunset and myself can do it. It was a bit embarrassing being a personal student to Princess Celestia, all the other ponies were jealous of my talent and opportunities.”

“Hey, you earned it by being better than them. People always shunned me for being too studious. They called me names, hit me, and stole my books. But in the end I knew I was more intelligent than any of them and later they would regret not studying as hard as I did. Once I came to Crystal Prep and everyone was on my level that changed. Same with CHS though that was more because the students were actually pleasant rather than being my peers.”

“I guess we’re more alike than we realise huh? I did notice similarities between your friends and my friends in both worlds but I never really had a chance to sit down with you and compare myself. It’s nice to finally have that chance.”

“Oh please Princess. You did me a massive favour, I had no idea what to get Sunset really. But wait, if you wanted to get her something to remind her of me. Why a pony?”

“You didn’t read the previous pages of the book did you? She’s been a little homesick lately, didn’t she tell you? I thought with you two dating she would have mentioned it.”

“She didn’t. I’ll talk to her about it, she needs to know she can come to me with any issues she has. Not that she shouldn’t talk to you too but I’m her girlfriend and I’m always going to be here.”

“I understand Twilight, don’t worry. She’s lucky to have a girl like you with her. Remember she can help you as much as you can help her. That’s the case with all your friends, it took me a while to learn that.”

“Of course. Thanks again. Want me to walk you back to the portal?”

“Maybe you should, I still don’t know this city well. You’re always welcome to come to Equestria some time. Maybe remind Sunset that the portal is still open and probably always will be.”

“Thank you, but not on my own. I’ll wait till Sunny wants to go back sometime. Let’s go then.”

After paying the two girls walked back to the steps of Canterlot High where after a quick hug goodbye, Princess Twilight returned to Equestria while Twilight of the human world made her way back to the apartment she shared with her lover. Inside, Sunset was fast asleep with a movie on a menu screen, she must have fallen asleep while it was playing.

Twilight giggled and turned off the DVD player and TV before trying to rouse Sunset.

“Sunny, I think you’d be more comfortable in bed.”

Sunset mumbled something incoherent and flung her arms around Twilight who practically carried her to bed, thankful that she was already in her pyjamas. Twilight changed and crawled in beside her, taking her usual spot and drifting off to sleep.

A Birthday to Remember

View Online

The next morning Sunset awoke to find she was in bed on her own with no recollection of how she got there. As she woke up the door opened to reveal Twilight with a tray containing two plates of pancakes and a single red rose.

“Good morning sleepyhead. I put you to bed when I came home last night, you were passed out on the couch with a movie on. I brought you breakfast in bed.”

“Thanks Twi, but you didn’t have to do that for me. What’s the occasion?”

“Really Sunny? It’s your birthday!”

Sunset took a moment to properly wake up and suddenly realised that yes, it was in fact her birthday.

“Oh, wow. Thanks honey. These smell good. Where’d you get em?”

“That’s not something you need to know right now Sunny, just enjoy them. Oh and the girls want you round at Sweet Snacks later. Pinkie probably has something planned.”

“I just hope she doesn’t go overboard for my sake. I don’t need much celebration.”

After devouring the pancakes Sunset got up, showered and dressed for the day with Twilight smiling all the while. Later around early afternoon the pair made their way to Sweet Snacks Cafe, the place was in darkness but the doors were conspicuously open. They entered and the lights turned on to reveal a party.

“Surprise! Happy Birthday Sunset!” Spoke a group of voices.

Pinkie had roped her colleague Sunny into helping set up Sunset’s party while all her other friends were there too. Along with a large orange cake decorated with yellow and red icing and her cutie mark on the very top.

“Wow, thanks girls. You didn’t have to go through all this trouble just for me.”

“Think nothing of it dear, we’re more than happy to pitch in and help you celebrate your birthday. You’d do the same for us.” Rarity said.

“Yup. We got this place for a couple of hours Shimmy so let’s get this party started!” Screamed Pinkie.

The old style jukebox played some party tunes as everyone chatted among themselves, danced and enjoyed some party food. Everyone had a slice of the cake which Pinkie had baked specially.

“Man, this is delicious Pinkie, thanks so much.”

Eventually Sunny queued up a slow song on the jukebox and once it played, the 4 couples present took hand in hand and danced.

Rarity pulled Applejack well through the dance although Applejack’s lack of grace did lead to a few mishaps. Pinkie and Vinyl danced well though it was easy to tell this wasn’t their style. Fluttershy just about managed to help Rainbow Dash to slow down and dance nicely though Dash wasn’t enjoying it. Finally it was the turn of the birthday girl.

Twilight held out her hand and Sunset gladly took it, the pair waltzing gracefully as if dancing was all too natural for them. They danced without a care in the world and once the song finished they were greeted by clapping and whistling. The pair blushed as Sunset pulled her lover in for a deep kiss.

Twilight slipped out of her embrace after a moment of passion and approached Rarity.

“Hey, you think you could distract Sunset for like an hour? I want to prepare something at home for her.”

“Of course darling. We’ll take her shopping. I’ll make sure she tries on all kinds of things so she won’t be home too soon.”

Applejack looked terrified. “Hold up Rares, shopping? Nuh uh, no way. I know how you get when we go shopping.”

“Feel free to return home dear, I can take her out by myself. But I’d very much appreciate my apple angel being with me. Please?”

Applejack rolled her eyes. “Alright fine, but remember. This is for Sunset, not you.”

The pair cornered Sunset and soon left with her heading for the mall while Twilight returned home.

The first thing Twilight did was prepare the ingredients just as she had done a few days prior at Pinkie’s home. She assembled her vegetables, pasta and sauce into a dish and placed it in the oven to bake. Meanwhile she relaxed for a short while. Just before it was finished she sprinkled cheese on top and put it back in to finish cooking. She poured two glasses of a red wine her mother gave her for a special occasion and finished setting the table. A single rose in a vase along with candle light completed the set for her surprise.

Sunset chose that moment to come in. “Wow. A candlelit dinner, just for me? You’re too good to me Twi. And what’s that delicious smell?”

“Remember this morning when you asked where I got the pancakes? I didn’t get them anywhere, I made them myself. Just like how I made a delicious meal for us.”

She removed it from the oven and plated up as Sunset took her coat off and sat at the small table.

“You learned to cook? Just for me?”

“You need to eat more than frozen dinners and takeout Sunset. I thought if I learned to cook I could make delicious and healthy dinners every night.”

Sunset’s mouth was watering. One bite and she was in heaven.

“Holy wow, this is incredible. This is better than a restaurant. Where was this talent hiding?”

Twilight smiled and enjoyed her own plate of food too.

“There’s still some cake in the fridge if you want dessert.”

Sunset polished off her plate. “Actually I’d like some more of that please.”

Twilight smiled again, plating Sunset another helping of Pasta. After 2 more servings, Twilight herself had one extra. The dish was empty and Sunset was stuffed.

“Man. I couldn’t eat another bite. I’m gonna pay for being greedy in the morning but that was just too good. Damn.”

“Glad you liked it Sunny. There’s plenty more where that came from, I’ll be cooking us good food from now on. And I’m not done with presents yet. Here’s one more thing for you.”
She gave Sunset a wrapped box.

“Sparkles you are too good to me.” Sunset opened the box and pulled out the plush pony. She looked at it with wide eyes for a moment before beginning to cry.

“This is. You. But in pony form. I’ve been missing my old home a bit lately, how did you know?”

“Truthfully I didn’t know what to get you so I used your book to talk to Princess Twilight. She brought that plush pony with her for me to give you and it was her that told me you were homesick. You know if you have any problems you can come to me, right Sunny? You don’t have to pretend everything is OK. I’m your girlfriend and I’ll always be here.”

Sunset threw her arms around Twilight and hugged her tight, crying into her shoulder. They were tears of joy, not sadness.

“Thank you for the best birthday ever Twilight. I love you so much. I’ll treasure this pony forever.”

“Princess Twilight said we can come visit any time you know. The portal isn’t closing any time soon.”

“Maybe someday, right now I just want to chill.”

The pair changed into pyjamas and relaxed for a while watching some cartoons before heading to bed. Sunset gave Twilight her best Sultry look.

“So, Twilight. Got any Ideas how to finish this night perfectly?”

“Sunset, I don’t think I’m ready to go that far just yet. But I’ll certainly do this.”

Twilight kissed her deeply, Sunset melted into the kiss and they made out passionately for a short while. Eventually they broke apart and smiled one more time before Twilight cuddled into Sunset’s neck and the pair were ready for sleep.

“Goodnight Twilight, thank you for the best birthday ever.”

“Goodnight Sunset. Thank you for being the best girlfriend I could ask for.”

This chapter was finished, but they knew their story still had a long way before its happy ending.
