Sunset's Love Life - The Beginning

Sunset Shimmer, forgiven for her past mistakes, and with a new friend to boot, why does she have to be so cute?

It's been a short while since the girls returned from Camp Everfree. Sunset is glad Twilight never saw anything more than a schoolgirl's crush in Timber, because she has her eyes on the young girl's heart.

This story has been rewritten in it's entirety. The original was fine but heavily flawed, I've since improved. At least I hope so. :P

Sunset Shimmer. Once a pony from a place called Equestria in another world she now stood as a human in Canterlot City. A troubled past involving her mentor Princess Celestia and power that she had kept a secret caused Sunset to grow jealous. She left her old world behind and never looked back. As a bully she forced her way to the top, but from there the only way was down.

Twilight Sparkle, there’s a name Sunset is all too familiar with. It’s the name of Equestria’s Princess of Friendship who defeated and humbled her, and the name of her human counterpart who attended Crystal Prep Academy before transferring to Canterlot High after the events at the Friendship Games.

As much as she was friends with the Princess, it was this Twilight Sparkle that she felt something different with. When she thought of Twilight’s sweet smile, cute glasses and adorkable social awkwardness. She couldn’t help but smile. Her cheeks warmed and her heart beat faster, she knew what it was but she also didn’t think to act on it. She thought Twilight wouldn’t be interested in her, or that she would be moving too fast even though they had known each other as friends for a couple of years now.

With a sigh Sunset awoke to her alarm going off that morning. She still had a bit of school left before she could decide what to do with her future. She made her mind up long ago that this world was to be her home. She owned a modest apartment consisting of a living area and kitchen, a bathroom and a single bedroom with a large queen sized bed. Big enough for two, not that she ever had anyone else in it.

“Same old same old I guess. Another day of school, another day with the girl of my dreams, another day wasted staring at her without making a move. It’s not that I don’t want to, I just don’t want to embarrass myself by confessing to someone I’m not even sure likes me that way.” She said to her mirror while brushing her hair straight, she sighed again and made some toast.

“If there was some way, somehow that I could figure out how she felt about a potential relationship with, well anybody. I might be tempted to talk to her. But for all I know her plans for the future are purely academic.”

She changed out of her pyjamas and into what could be considered a normal outfit for her. A pink t-shirt emblazoned with what was her cutie mark as a pony. A leather jacket, an orange skirt and knee high boots. She hopped onto her bicycle, hoping someday to trade it for a motorcycle but that day had yet to come. Riding to school she tried to make sure she wasn’t late. As she stopped outside the school gates, she chained up her bike and checked her phone,
It was 8:40 AM, she was early and her friends were waiting at the steps to Canterlot High.

She spotted Rainbow Dash and Applejack arguing while Fluttershy sat beneath a tree petting a squirrel and Rarity was inspecting her nails. Pinkie Pie nowhere to be seen but was likely somehow nowhere and yet everywhere all at once.

“No way AJ. Mr Cranky Doodle is the worst teacher in this place, he’s so, well. Cranky!”

“Listen here missy, at least he tells it how it is and makes sure some of us ain’t just slackin’ off and rockin’ out instead of paying attention. Miss Cheerilee is too soft on us if you ask me.”

Sunset rolled her eyes and walked over to Rarity with a smile on her face.

“Oh Sunset, darling. How delightful to see you. Honestly those two are always bickering about something, you’d swear they weren’t even friends. How are you today darling?”

Sunset giggled. “Thanks Rarity, I’m doing alright. Yeah those two always have something to say. Is Twilight here yet?” She asked, looking around.

“Well I haven’t seen her so...Oh look there she is now.” Rarity pointed to the gates where Twilight Sparkle was walking into the school grounds.

Sunset just couldn’t help but smile at the young lady before her. She saw an inner beauty radiating from her being, something she doubted anyone else would care to look for given Twilight’s usual choice of attire and pastimes. Her heart practically begged her to do something. But her mind told her it was best not to say a word.

“Hi girls, how is everybody this fine morning?”

“Howdy Twilight. I’m fine thanks for askin’. Though little miss speed demon here could use a slap upside the head till she starts talkin’ sense again.”

Rainbow Dash scowled at Applejack. “I’m fine Twilight, but maybe miss country bumpkin over there could stand to shut up every now and then!”

Twilight recoiled a bit. “Ooh, a fight? That’s not good. What was it about?”

“Dash thinks Mr Cranky is too strict, and I think Miss Cheerilee is too lenient.”

“Because he is! He took my soccer ball away for an entire day last time I was dribbling it out at lunch.”

“Because ya broke a window Dash! Good gravy, do you ever think about anything but yourself?”

She flashed a quick glance to Fluttershy which went unnoticed by the group. “Sometimes, but not usually. Why would I? I’m the star of the soccer team, I’m going to graduate and get into Canterlot College and go on to be an amazing athlete, people all over the world will know the name Rainbow Dash!”

Applejack practically seethed, but she knew this would just keep going until someone backed down so she decided to be the bigger person.

“Alright, I admit Mr Cranky can be a bit too harsh sometimes. I’m sorry we fought Dash. Maybe I am a mite stubborn.” Applejack said sheepishly.

“And maybe you’re right that Miss Cheerilee is a bit too nice sometimes. I’m as stubborn as you are AJ. I’m sorry too.”

Sunset smiled as the bell rang and the group made their way into the school.

After their morning classes the group got together in the band room after eating lunch. None of them had any real musical aspirations but they still enjoyed spending time together and practicing their instruments. Twilight had a similar voice to the Princess just with slightly less confidence. And she would never have the guts to perform on stage. But when that time came, Sunset and Rainbow Dash had her covered. All while they practiced, Sunset couldn’t help but sneak glances over at Twilight. Her skirt and short socks exposed long slightly toned legs. She thought her polo shirt with its poofy shoulders was adorkable just like her glasses. And she loved hearing Twilight sing. Applejack however had noticed every peek and cornered Sunset after practice.

“Hey Sunset. I couldn’t help but notice you were a mite distracted during that there practice session. Anything you ain’t tellin’ us?”

“What? No. Me? I’m fine, really Applejack. There’s nothing to tell.” Sunset was trying to lie, and doing a bad job at it. Applejack smirked at her.

“Yeah, right. Sure. Wanna come over to the farm after school and talk about it? The others don’t have to hear a word of it if you don’t want em’ to. But I want to help you if I can.”

Sunset sighed. “Fine, maybe talking to a friend could help me.”

After school was done for the day Sunset followed Applejack back to her family’s farm and helped her with a few chores. Once they were done they headed up to Applejack’s room and sat down on her bed.
“Alright Sunset, shoot. I’m happy to listen to whatever’s ailin’ ya. I saw you lookin’ over at Twilight the whole time we were practicing. You still done good with your guitar too so I don’t know if the others noticed anything. So what’s up?”
Sunset looked down at the bed, then at the ceiling and walls. She tried to look everywhere but Applejack’s face as she struggled to come up with an answer.

“I never had friends before I met you girls. Even then I was mean and if Princess Twilight hadn’t helped me see the light. I’d probably still be causing misery at our school. So I wasn’t great at friendship, I’m glad I had such patient teachers. Naturally not being good at friendship means I never considered anything beyond that, a real relationship. None of the boys looked appealing to me, and none of the girls did either. Princess Twilight was kinda cute but again, I didn’t feel anything.

But then our Twilight came along. My cheeks got warmer, my heart beat faster, I lost my breath. She may not be the most beautiful woman in the world, but to me, she was perfect. I was really happy we could be friends. But at the same time, my heart wanted more. It still does, I know I feel something for her, but I don’t want to ruin our friendship. And I just don’t know what I can do.”

“Well Sunset, let’s take it slow. How does she make you feel, right now whenever you see her?”

“My heart beats faster, a smile never leaves my face and I just feel… Right. Like standing beside her is where I should be.”

“And do you ever think about her outside of school?”

“All the time. I have dreams about her, some I wouldn’t be comfortable discussing with anyone. I imagine her and I walking through the town hand in hand. At a restaurant or kissing under the stars. Sometimes even more.”

“Well then it sounds to me like you know what you need to do. So what’s the problem?”

“The problem is I don’t know if she likes girls, never mind if she’d be interested in a relationship with me. And I don’t want to ruin our friendship by asking her an awkward question and being rejected.”

“There it is. I knew it. You’re scared she’ll say no. Well I can’t promise anything but I can try to talk to her, see what she thinks of you. Maybe if you knew she did feel somethin’ you might be a bit more encouraged to make a move. You know even if she did like you that she’d never ask you first.”

Sunset at this point was crying and hugged Applejack.

“Thank you so much Applejack, I’ve been holding this crush in for a long time. Getting closure would be amazing.”

Applejack hugged her back tightly. “It’s alright sugarcube, cry if’n you need to. I’ll do what I can. You just focus on keeping yourself stable alright? You can stay for dinner, Granny always makes somethin’ nice and hearty. Then git on home and play a video game or 2. Somethin’ to take your mind off things. Alright?”

“Alright Applejack, I-I’ll try.”

As the family plus Sunset sat down to delicious bowls of stew, Granny Smith knowing from school that Sunset was vegetarian made sure to not give her meat. They enjoyed the hearty meal and Applebloom shared her latest escapades with her friends which caused everyone present to laugh. Big Mac took Sunset back home in the family’s truck since it was beginning to get dark and after saying goodbye she went back into her apartment and played New Super Star Pony, a game series she always loved since she came here. It made her smile and before it got too late she shut down the console and changed into her pyjamas ready to sleep. She dreamed the night away of her as yet unrequited crush. But knew she would soon finally have an answer.

Another brisk autumn morning came in as Twilight Sparkle awoke and felt around her bedside for her glasses. She thought back to her dreams from the night before, of cuddling Sunset, holding her hand and kissing her in the rain. Her heart beat faster and one could almost see a slight tinge of pink on her purple cheeks. She sighed.
“Why is my heart aching for a girl I’ve only ever seen as a friend? Why a girl at all? Sure my time with Timber wasn’t perfect, but just because I realised I didn’t like him that way and broke it off doesn’t mean I should be instantly going for the opposite sex. This is all highly illogical.”

“Love isn’t always logical Twilight.” Spoke a soft voice in her door frame. It was Cadance, former dean and current principal of Crystal Prep Academy, and soon to be Twilight’s sister in law.
“Love comes from the heart, how you feel about someone. And it doesn’t restrict itself based on things like gender or appearance. I won’t pry into your personal life, but I think you’d do well talking to a friend about your problems before they get any bigger” she finished with a smile.

Twilight took a breath. “Thanks Cadance, I’ll keep that in mind.” Cadance left as Twilight showered and wore her usual purple pleated skirt marked with a pink star and white sparkles, the cutie mark of Princess Twilight, along with a blue striped polo shirt and a star shaped hair clip, finishing with short socks and sneakers. She made her way downstairs to breakfast.

“Good morning dear.” Spoke her mother Twilight Velvet. “Would you like me to whip up some pancakes? Or just grab something quick and get there early?”

Twilight smiled at her mom. “I think I’ll just have some cereal today, thanks mom.”

After a bowl of unicorn-o’s she grabbed her backpack, said goodbye to Spike and caught her bus to school. She arrived at 8:50 AM, shortly before school started and witnessed an argument between her friends Applejack and Rainbow Dash who quickly reconciled. She also saw Rarity and Fluttershy speaking to one-another and then laid eyes on the subject of her affection. Sunset Shimmer.

She truly thought Sunset was a goddess given human form. Slightly thicker than the other girls, long red and yellow hair sat perfectly atop her head. A beautiful, unblemished face and well toned legs completed her observations of the yellow skinned wonder before her.

The morning class was fairly boring. Mr Cranky Doodle went over some seemingly complex math which was child’s play to Twilight and so her thoughts turned to Sunset, she ended up daydreaming long enough for Mr Cranky to notice and walk over to her and clear his throat.

“Well Miss Sparkle, if you think this is too easy, maybe you can demonstrate to the class how to find the length of the hypotenuse of a triangle.”

Twilight smirked. “Gladly Mr Cranky.” She took his chalk and went up to the board demonstrating the formula and placing in the numbers he had written to solve it perfectly.

“You always were a smart one Miss Sparkle, but still, you need to pay attention. Dreaming is for bed, not class.” Mr Cranky scolded her.

At lunch she sat with the girls and of course, the topic of the class came up.

“You still think Mr Cranky isn’t a hardass AJ?” Rainbow Dash said cockily.

“Yeah yeah, that was cruel. But next time he might want to challenge somebody who ain't a genius.” Applejack smirked.

Twilight blushed. “I’m hardly a genius, I just never had friends so I spent a lot of time doing work beyond my age. Eventually others will catch up to me. Especially since I still don’t have much of a social life.”

Rarity raised an eyebrow. “Surely you must enjoy something outside of school besides studying. How about walking? Or shopping? Or ooh! Maybe you have a handsome young boyfriend at home you aren’t telling us about, hm?”

Twilight rolled her eyes. “No, Timber was nice but I’m not looking for another boyfriend any time soon thank you.”
Rarity took note of the fact she specified boyfriend and the group went on to the band room to practice their instruments.

Twilight was a fair singer, but she would never have the courage to perform for a crowd, and was thankful her friends had that covered for her. Meanwhile any time she got the chance she snuck a glance over at Sunset. She couldn’t help herself and unfortunately for her, someone noticed.

After the band practice she was cornered by Rarity.

“So, not looking for a boy friend I believe you said? Well, from the way you were staring at Sunset during practice I dare say you’ve considered batting for the other team so to speak. Would you like to come home with me this afternoon? I’ll happily talk about your choice in partners away from prying ears.”

Twilight gulped, then she remembered what Cadance told her, that a friend could help her out.

“That might actually help Rarity, thank you. I’ll have to call my mom after school to let her know I won't be home till later.”

The afternoon classes were fairly boring for Twilight, although she was anxious about spilling her secrets to Rarity. After school she called her mom who told her it was OK to visit Rarity as long as she came home at some point, or made sure to stay with Rarity for the night if it got too late. The pair walked away from the school grounds towards a modest town house.

“Well Twilight, welcome to my home. My parents are out of town until tomorrow and Sweetie Belle is staying over with Scootaloo tonight so it shall just be the two of us. Which might make it easier for you to divulge your desires.” Rarity spoke, rather flirtatiously. She was trying to rile up Twilight a little and make her feel more comfortable.

Twilight sat beside Rarity on the couch.

“Well, where do you want me to start?”

“Tell me about your preferences these days. Still into boys? Or are you interested in seeing what the fairer sex has to offer?”

“I never really thought about it. To me it shouldn’t matter what kind of person you choose to be your partner, boy or girl, as long as you feel a connection to them. I guess that would make me bi?”

“Oh please, I completely agree with you and I don’t think labels are needed in our modern world. Everyone is much more tolerant these days of however you choose to live your life. And I for one am glad of it. So then, on to the next point. Sunset.”

Hearing her crush’s name caused Twilight to involuntarily blush. Rarity smirked.

“Gotcha. Your face tells me all I need to know darling. So tell me, what do you see in her?”

Twilight sighed. “Everything. She’s well toned, her skin is smooth and beautiful. Her hair flows gorgeously and her smile is the sweetest I’ve ever seen. I’ve always been shy, insecure even. But with her I feel. Safe. Like nobody’s going to try and steal my purse or hurt me. Because she’d put them on their butt if they tried. She’s so much stronger than I am, and I love being close to her.”

“Ahh yes, the old sub and dom. Usually terms with a more, ahem vulgar meaning. They can be used to describe a simple relationship too. Simply put, one person feels like the other is stronger, and is willing to let them take charge while they provide support. And I imagine you feel that way about Sunset.”

“It’s a little embarrassing Rarity, but yes, I do.”

“Have you told her how you feel?”

Twilight sighed again. “No. I’m afraid it'll mess up our friendship, even if there’s no chance of a relationship I would still be happy just being beside her as a friend. But confessing how I feel to her could ruin that, so I’d rather not risk it. I don’t even know if she’s interested in dating girls, never mind me. She went out with Flash a few years back from what I hear.”

Rarity laughed. “Oh please, that’s what he’ll tell you, she’ll say it was more like he clung to her like a lost puppy and she gave him a chance, a chance he squandered by being idiotic and forgetful. Sunset was still ruling the school by that point and even I felt sorry for her having to pity a loser like him. Ahh but he has gotten better, no longer so naive. Shame he couldn’t get a girl if his life depended on it.” She giggled.

“Anyway Twilight, if you want, I could speak to her for you. Try and find out what kind of partner she’d be looking for. I won’t mention your name in any way, nor anything that could link her back to you. Would that help?”

Twilight smiled. “That would be a big help Rarity, thank you.”

The two chatted long into the evening, Rarity heated some leftover pasta for the both of them and by the time it got dark Twilight hadn’t noticed until it was too late.

“Oh no! My mom wanted me back before dark! She said if it got dark I should stay here but that’s only if you’re ok with it, Rarity.”

“Of course dear, we can watch a movie, I’ll make popcorn. Just two gal pals relaxing the night away, I could loan you some pyjamas if you want to get a little more comfy. Might want to call your mom before she starts panicking though.”

Twilight nodded and called her mom. “Hi mom, no I’m not out in the dark, I’m still at Rarity’s. I know, I’m sorry I wasn’t home in time. Yes I’ll stay here tonight and be home tomorrow afternoon I promise. Thanks bye!”

After changing into some of Rarity’s spare pyjamas, the pair watched a sappy romance movie and ate popcorn. Rarity even hugged Twilight and began to cry when it looked like the couple weren’t going to end up together. By the end Rarity was sniffling and drying her tears while Twilight just watched on, fairly uninterested.

“Call me heartless, but that was a load of garbage. I mean, some people might like it but It’s not really my thing.”

Rarity pouted. “Well, I suppose some of us just have more refined tastes.”

Twilight’s eyes widened. “Nonono sorry Rarity, that's not what I meant. I mean, you probably wouldn’t be interested in the complex chemistry I’m researching at the moment, everyone has different tastes and interests. And your knowledge of romance might actually be of benefit to me in the end. And to you if you ever decide to look for someone.

...Are you looking for someone?”

Rarity sniffed one last time. “Well if you must know. I’m looking alright. And I’ve found the one I want. But of course she’s too straightforward to notice my flirting. Applejack is nothing if not honest. But she could stand to be a bit more observant.”

“Have you tried telling her directly how you feel? It seems to me like you know what needs to be done, you’re just not doing it.”

“Yes. I suppose I do, don’t I. Maybe after we deal with your little predicament I’ll come clean to her. I can’t imagine she’d be interested in me though. She’s hardworking and honest, almost to a fault. She’d never look for a diva like me.”

“You work hard too, just doing different things. And I’m sure she can see that. Plus you don’t know what kind of person she’s looking for. Give it to her straight and see what happens, that’s my advice.”

Rarity smirked. “Advice you can’t seem to follow for yourself hm?”

Twilight blushed. “Shush Rarity, I guess I’m sleeping here tonight, can I get a blanket?”

Rarity smiled. “Darling I wouldn’t make you sleep on your own on the couch, you can share my bed if you like. Or we can both take a chair in here.”

“It would be a bit awkward being in your bed with you when we both have our hearts set on other partners. I think it would be better to stay in here.”

“Alright dear. I’ll get some blankets.”

The next morning Rarity woke up and saw the clock read 8 AM in horror.

“AHH! Twilight! Get up, quick! We’re running late!”

Twilight groggily awoke and saw Rarity’s phone on the table. Reading the time she began panicking too. The pair washed up and dressed as quickly as they could manage, grabbing some toast on the way out; they made it just in time for the bell to ring, signaling their first class. Rarity spoke to Applejack.

“Applejack dear, we need to have a serious discussion. Lunch time behind the bleachers I think would yield the least eavesdroppers.”

Applejack looked puzzled. “Uhh, ok Rares. Sure thing.”

The Set Up

View Online

At lunch, Rarity and Applejack excused themselves from the group after eating and headed for the soccer field, behind the bleachers Rarity looked around to ensure nobody would listen in on them.

“So Rarity, what’s so important that we had to talk privately?”

“Our dear friends Applejack. Sunset and Twilight. Twilight cares deeply for Sunset, but the poor dear is too timid to make a move. I told her I would find out what kind of partner Sunset wanted but I don’t know where to begin.”

Applejack smirked. “I have the same problem. Sunset told me she loved Twilight but wanted to be sure she would be interested before Sunset made her move. She didn’t want to risk ruining their friendship. I think we both got our answers. But even if we tell 'em, that don’t mean they’ll do anything about it. We need to get them together somehow, alone.”

“What If we set them up at Sweet Snacks Cafe? Pinkie could serve them a romantic dessert while we slip away together and leave them alone. If we invite them out individually then they won’t suspect a thing until it’s too late. Rarity said with a scheming look on her face.

“A mite sneaky there Rares. But it could work, we’d need to get Pinkie in on it though and we left her back at the cafeteria.”

As if by magic a poofy mess of pink hair popped out of a nearby bush with a badger on her head.

“My ears were burning. I think I might be allergic to badgers.” She sneezed. “Oh, and I heard my name too.”

“Well if ya heard us Pinkie then you can help with settin’ up Sunset and Twilight. You workin’ after school today?”

“Yep, and I know just what they need. Get 'em to Sweet Snacks and I’ll get you a distraction to sneak out then you just leave it to momma Pinkie.”

After lunch Applejack walked alongside Sunset towards their next class. “Hey Sunset, wanna grab a bite after school with me and Rares? Sweet Snacks does some mighty fine pastries.”

“Sure, why not. If Pinkie’s on we might get a discount.” Sunset chuckled.

Meanwhile at the lockers.

“Darling you simply must come with us, it’ll just be a snack with 2 friends. Myself and Applejack.”

“Rarity I already told you twice already, no! I have homework to do.”

“Homework for next term knowing you.” She muttered. “Come on dear Twilight, can’t you take a break for one afternoon? For us?”

Twilight sighed and relented. “I suppose sugar can provide a temporary boost to brain functionality. Alright fine!”

“Splendid dear, now off to class we go.”

After school the pairs walked separately to the Cafe, as Twilight and Rarity arrived, Sunset was already seated.

“Oh Sunset, hey. What are you doing here?” Twilight asked.

“Applejack invited me, I guess we’re all here together then?”

Moments later Rarity left to "powder her nose" and snuck out a back window while Pinkie called on Applejack in the kitchens and let her out the back door.

“Ya think we should’ve stayed to chaperone their date?”

“It’s hardly a date dear, maybe it will turn into one. I for one hope it works out for them, goodness knows love is a wonderful feeling.”

Applejack smirked. “And who pray tell would you be feeling love for that you would know Rares?”

Rarity blushed. “Well, I have my eyes on a strapping young lady. She’s hard working, honest and far prettier than she gives herself credit for. But I do wish she would notice my advances.”

Applejack pulled Rarity around to face her. “Maybe this lady is a bit more observant than you give her credit for.” She said before leaning in and giving Rarity a quick peck on the lips.

The reaction was instant, Rarity practically melted into her arms and she had to carry her back to her own home which was thankfully not far.

“Was wondering when she’d admit it.” Applejack said to no one in particular with a smirk.

Back at the cafe Sunset and Twilight sat alone in the booth together as Pinkie rolled up with her pad and pen in hand.

“So, what can I get you two lovebirds?”

Both of them blushed and awkwardly recoiled.

“Cut it out Pinkie, we’re just here as friends, right Sunny?”

“Right Twilight, friends. Knock it off Pinkie.”

Pinkie smirked and rolled away as Sunset finally processed that yes, Twilight had in fact given her a nickname. Pinkie returned moments later with a slice of red velvet cake for both of them and a single red rose between the plates, she knew just the right amount of push they needed.

Sunset blushed. “Y’know Twi, Rarity and Applejack left a while ago and I don’t think they’re coming back. It’s almost like...”

Twilight caught on. “You think they planned this?”

“Could’ve done Twi. So I saw you leaving with Rarity yesterday. What’s up with her?”

“Oh you know, same old Rarity. She just wanted to talk to me, thought I needed help with someone...thing! Something! I said something!”

“Help with someone eh Twi? Tell me about them. Maybe I could give you a little advice.” Sunset’s heart sank slightly but her brain told her “No you idiot, she could mean you.”

Twilight’s eyes widened. “Well uhh. She’s beautiful. And strong. She makes me feel safe just by being near her, and her hair reminds me of bacon.”

Sunset gave a look halfway between admiration and “Seriously?” Before responding.

“Well I think this person might appreciate it if you just told them how you feel. I know I’ve been struggling to tell someone about my feelings too. A girl who’s shy, cute, has adorkable glasses and a dorky cute polo shirt. Who makes me smile just by sitting near me.”

Twilight’s cheeks heated and a clear blush could be seen. “Sunset, do you like me?”

“I do Twilight. And I’m guessing you like me too?”

“More than you could ever know Sunset.”

“Why me though? I’m just a bad girl bully who blew up the school and became a demon.”

“I didn’t know you then Sunset, I’ve only seen you as you are today and I love who you’ve become. I turned into a demon too. And I don’t deserve someone as great as you. But I always secretly hoped.”

“Don’t say that Twilight. That wasn’t your fault and you’ve moved on to be a better person. I don’t need my geode to tell me what you’re thinking. You love me, and you do deserve me. Or anyone else you want to be with. But I’d love to give us a shot. How about Friday night? I’ll get us some reservations and text you where to go.”

Twilight sniffed, shedding a few tears she said. “Y-yeah, I’d like that Sunny. I’ll check with my mom but I don’t think it'll be a problem.”

Sunset moved out of her side of the booth and sat beside Twilight, embracing her. “It’s alright Twi. Cry if you need to, I’m here for you. I know this is a lot of emotion for you all at once, but I need you to be strong for me, can you do that Twi?”

Twilight sniffed some more and let Sunset dry her tears as she nodded meekly. “I-i’ll try. Thank you Sunny.”

After returning home. Twilight’s mother rushed over as she saw her daughter’s eyes were red.

“Twilight! You’ve been crying, are you ok dear?”

“I’m fine now, thanks mom. Sunset held me while I let my emotions out. I’ve never felt this way before.”
“Sit down dear, tell me all about it.”

Twilight sat down beside her mother on the couch. “Well, our friends set us up together at Sweet Snacks Cafe and we kinda admitted that we both had feelings for one another. She’s asked to take me out on Friday night and I kinda already said yes, I know I should’ve talked to you first. Please don’t make me cancel on her.”

Twilight Velvet embraced her daughter. “Your first real date. Of course you can go, maybe that Rarity girl can help you doll up a little tomorrow. You have then to figure out what you’re going to do the following evening with her. I think this is good for you. As nice as that Timber boy was, I could see for all the times you hung out together, you never cared much about him.”

“He asked me to dinner a few times. But I kept saying no. And eventually yeah, I realised I didn't care for him and dropped it. He understood.”

“Well whoever you choose to be your partner, I’ll support you honey. Come on, I’m making your favourite.”

Twilight smiled but then realised her mother was right, she’d need a lot of help getting ready for her date and Rarity was the best choice, which could mean a nightmare for her.

Preparations

View Online

The next morning just before school started Twilight approached Rarity, her expression one of extreme nerves.

“Hey Rarity, can I ask you something?”

“Certainly dear, what’s on your mind?”

“Could you uhh, helpmegereadyforadate!” She quickly blurted out, flustered.

“Beg your pardon dear?”

Twilight took a deep breath. “I have a date, tomorrow night, with Sunset. She’s taking me to a fancy restaurant and I need a dress, some advice, and a hug.” She finished almost fainting with how embarrassed she felt.

Rarity caught her almost falling over and hugged her tight. “I’ll help however I can darling, you’re just a bundle of nerves today. Is she that important to you? I know you told me how you felt about her, but I never expected you to be like this.”

“She is Rarity, she really truly is.”

“Well then I’ll have to do everything I can. You’re coming over to my place this afternoon, no questions asked. I’ll arrange a few dresses I have lying around and see if one of them suits you, maybe look into styling your hair a little and perhaps a dash of makeup, and of course if all goes well I’ll need to see you tomorrow after school too so you can be ready to dazzle Sunset.”

“Thanks Rarity, you’re the best.”

Sunset spotted Twilight talking to Rarity and assumed she was nervous about their date and needed some help. In truth, she needed help too but now that Rarity was preoccupied she had to consider which one of her other friends could help her. Not Rainbow “tomboy” Dash certainly, or Applejack and her country chic. Even Pinkie was just a bundle of bright colors. Which only left one choice.

“Hey Fluttershy!” Sunset called, the girl in question turning around to greet her.

“Oh, hello Sunset. What’s up?”

“I’ve got a date tomorrow night with Twilight. I’ve got a few dresses but I’m not sure which one would be best to wear, and I’ve never been out on a real date before either. I was hoping you could maybe help me out.”

“Oh goodness, are you sure I’m the right person? I’m sure one of our other friends could be more helpful to you.”

“Rarity is already helping Twilight from what I’ve seen and none of the other girls have a fashion sense beyond street clothes and rainbows. You at least have an eye for detail. I’ve seen you knitting for the animals and sewing your skirts. Please Fluttershy, you’re the best person to help me.”

“Well, if you’re sure. Then OK. Why don’t I come back to your place this afternoon and we can see what you have to work with. Maybe a little make-up could go a long way too and I’ve had a couple of dates before, Sandalwood is such a gentleman, but I didn’t feel anything special with him so we broke it off.”

“Thanks Fluttershy, this means a lot to me. I’ll be sure to help you anytime you need it too. Maybe I could come to the animal shelter some day and help you out.”

“That would be great Sunset, we can always use more volunteers even if it's just for a day or two”

Classes went fairly smoothly that day. Twilight put all her focus and effort into her work so she wouldn’t be anxious or nervous about her date while Sunset played it as cool as ever. After school Sunset and Fluttershy went over to Sunset’s apartment.

“Wow Sunset, this place amazes me every time I see it, I still don’t know how you can afford it.”

“Actually, I own it. The previous owner was getting older and he wanted to find a lady and use his savings to retire together with her. I helped him out and he gave me the apartment. He wasn’t charging me much rent before then either, he was a sweetheart and I hope he’s happy now.”

Sunset laid out 3 dresses on her bed. One was a custom made dress by Rarity, yellow with fiery orange accents and her cutie mark on the chest.

The second was a pink short dress that she got for Pinkie’s “Pink all night long” party the previous year.

The third was one she picked up once at the mall, she never thought she’d wear it but she thought it was pretty. It was a striking lavender with darker purple accents and decorated with tiny twinkling white stars, each adorned with a small gemstone.

As soon as Fluttershy laid eyes on the third dress, she knew it was the perfect one.

“That one Sunset! She’ll love it, it looks like something she would wear, and I think she’ll appreciate you trying to make her feel comfortable by wearing something familiar to her. I know she can be pretty shy sometimes, and I know how awful that feels. Not being confident enough to tell someone you’ve fallen for how you really feel can be heartbreaking.”

Sunset looked at her, concerned. “Do you have feelings for someone Fluttershy? It sounds like you were talking about yourself as much as Twilight.” She put her arm on Fluttershy’s shoulder and gave a warm smile.

Fluttershy shed a single tear and smiled back. “Well, yes I suppose I do. Rainbow Dash is a great gal who deserves whoever she ends up with, as much as I wish it was me I just don’t see how it could happen. She doesn’t notice me and I’m too shy to try anything.” She finished, sighing.

“Fluttershy, I think the best thing for you to do would be to just, talk to her. You don’t have to confess right away. Hang out with her, just the two of you. And If you feel confident enough some time during the day, tell her. If not, try again another day. Maybe she will notice you.”

“You might be right, I’ll text her for this weekend maybe. A walk in the park, maybe a milkshake. Just, friends hanging out. Yeah I can do that.”

“Of course you can Fluttershy, you’re more confident than you give yourself credit for. Oh yeah, I might need your help tomorrow getting this thing on right and maybe with a little makeup. Think you could make it?”

“Sure thing Sunset. But what do we do now? Should I just go or what?”

“If you want to, yeah, but we could watch a movie or play some video games instead, how’s that sound?” Sunset smirked.

“Sounds great Sunset. I’ll kick your butt just like last time!” She giggled giving her best attempt at trash talk.

Meanwhile on the other side of town.

“Rarity! We’ve been at this for 2 hours! If you haven’t found the right dress for me yet, I don’t think you ever will!”

“Hush darling, fashion takes time, a little patience would do you wonders.” Rarity continued to rummage through her large walk-in wardrobe before pulling out a striking dress, light orange in color with yellow and red accents adorned with Sunset’s cutie mark on the chest.

“I made a dress just like this for Sunset about a year ago, although this one was a more recent piece, a little better quality too. I don’t know what inspired me to make a second one but I’m glad I did, it’s perfect. She’ll see you wearing her colors, be amazed at how you look and you’ll sweep her off her feet without even trying darling I just know it.”

Twilight tried it on, it was a nice fit, Rarity tucked a few edges for the sleeker Twilight and showed her over to a full length mirror.

“What do you think dear?”

“It's beautiful. It looks great, thanks. I’ll have it cleaned and returned after the date.”

“Nonsense dear, I have plenty more where that came from, keep it, it’s yours. And make sure you’re here after school tomorrow, I want to make you Sparkle.” She finished with a confident smirk.

“Ok, if you’re really sure Rarity, thanks a bunch. But there’s another thing too. I’ve never had a date, what do I do? Is there a list? A schedule? Anything to give me structure?”

Rarity chuckled. “Oh no no no dear, a date is most entertaining when nothing beyond the where and why is planned out. All you need to know is, you want to look pretty and you’re having dinner together. Typically in a relationship there is a role of a gentleman and a lady, even among two beautiful flowers like yourselves. Sunset I would imagine will be playing the role of the gentleman, which means I can make you look extra gorgeous to show off your feminine wiles to her rugged beauty. After that, just say whatever comes to your mind dear Twilight, as long as both you and she are having a good time together, then what you do or say shouldn’t matter.”

“Well, ok. If that’s what it takes then I’ll try my best. I gotta get going, but I’ll see you tomorrow Rarity, thanks again.”

“Think nothing of it dear, goodbye!”

Both Sunset and Twilight slept peacefully that night as they dreamed of being together at last.

The First Date

School was as typically boring as ever, although news of the two friends' date that evening had reached the ears of the rest of their group, each offering encouragement to one of the girls.

“Shoot Sunset, I didn’t think you’d be gunnin’ for her this quick, but I reckon you’ll both have a great time together.” Spoke Applejack

“Yeah! Make sure you tell us all about it on Monday Sunset, I’m not a fan of gossip, but this sounds totally cool.” Rainbow Dash stated.

“Thanks guys, I’ll do my best.” Sunset said with a smile.

Pinkie Pie put an arm around Twilight. “You and Sunny Shims over there are gonna have a blast I just know it! Remember, the most important thing is having fun!”

Twilight smiled. “Thanks Pinkie, that was almost sensible.”

After school Twilight returned home to drop off her bag and make her way to Rarity’s house, she almost made it out the door without running into the one person she didn’t want to see, but then Shining Armor cornered her.

“So Twily, a date huh? You know, as a big brother it’s my duty to intimidate any potential partner of yours into treating you well. She better not get on my bad side.”

Twilight rolled her eyes and scowled. “Step one foot near Sunset and I’ll tell Cadance to revoke your cuddle privileges, permanently

Shining Armor backed off. “H-hey now, no need for that. I was kidding Twily, I hope you have a great time.”

“That’s better, thanks big brother.”

She arrived at Rarity’s on time and as soon as she knocked the door she was rushed inside.

“Come in darling, we don't have a moment to lose.”

Rarity gave her a light blush, a small amount of lipstick and some eyeliner before getting her to change into the dress and model for her.

“It's nice. But It’s missing something. Ahh! I’ve got it!”

Rarity placed a gold necklace around Twilight’s slender neck.

“Now unfortunately, I will need that back. It’s one of a kind you see. A friend of Sweetie Belle, Miss Silver Spoon. Got her father to craft it for me, hand cut gemstones in a golden necklace, it wasn’t cheap.”

The necklace in question featured a set of 3 blue diamonds engraved with detail and stacked vertically. If one knew of Rarity’s Equestrian counterpart, they would recognise it as her cutie mark.

“Wow, thank you Rarity, I look prettier than I ever thought imaginable. I didn’t know I could be this beautiful.”

“Anyone can darling, it’s all about presentation. Now, like I told you yesterday, Sunset will probably be acting as the gentleman, so don’t be afraid to let her take the lead, maybe flirt a little if you see this going any further. Most of all just have fun and see how she makes you feel.”

At Sunset’s apartment a knock on the door signaled the arrival of Fluttershy with a bouquet of purple flowers.

“Roseluck told me her mom was having a sale today, and I thought you might want something to gift to Twilight. So I brought you these.”

“Wow, thanks Fluttershy. You really didn’t have to do that.”

“I want you to have a great time with Twilight tonight, and if there’s anything I can do to make things better, then I’ll try my best. Now, how about a little makeup?”

Sunset simply had a light blush to accent her natural beauty while modeling her purple dress, she also had a matching hair clip in.

“Wow, I hope Twilight likes it, I don’t normally doll up this much.”

“I’m sure she’ll appreciate the effort you went to Sunset, now go get her! Tell me on Monday how it went!”

Fluttershy left the apartment and began her walk home, as Sunset began her walk to a nearby restaurant.

A suited man stood inside the door. “Ey yo, welcome to Mark's Bistro, need a table or are you already booked in?"

“Reservation for Sunset Shimmer?”

“Yep, right here no problem. Table for two huh? Guess you're waiting for somebody?"

“She’ll be here any minute now.”

“I think she’s talking about me.” Spoke a soft voice behind Sunset. She turned and her jaw dropped at the sight of Twilight before her.

Twilight giggled. “You look great too Sunny, now pick your jaw up so we can be seated.”

"Heh, alright tables over here, here's your menus, Big Johnny's been making some killer burgers lately and his Italian is always a hit if you ask me, take a minute to read over and somebody will take your order no sweat ladies."

“Am I really that pretty Sunny?”

“You really are Twi, Rarity outdid herself with the outfit and makeup. The dress reminds me of something.” Sunset smirked.

“I could say the same about you. Nice hair clip too. Did you do that all on your own?”

“Nah, I was nervous too, Fluttershy helped me out. I got these for you too Twi.”

She handed Twilight the bouquet as Twilight smiled wider.

“Thank you Sunny, they smell great. How did you know purple was my favourite color?”

“Lucky guess?” She smirked.

A waiter came to take their orders, Twilight had a burger while Sunset ordered some vegetable pasta bake.

“Not a fan of meat Sunny?”

“I’m a pony from another world, remember? I’m used to being a herbivore, although I don’t mind meat, I’m not a huge fan of it.”

“They say a vegetarian diet can be good for you. I don’t judge. I kinda forgot about that whole pony thing to be honest. I don’t care about your past, only who you are today in front of me.”

“And I don’t care where you came from either, things with Crystal Prep are a little better now, but there’s still friendly school rivalry. I only care about the girl in front of me too.”

They enjoyed their meal and each ordered a slice of cake for dessert, Sunset ending up with a small amount of cream on her cheek. She reached for a napkin to clean it but Twilight interrupted her.

“Let me get that for you Sunny.” Twilight ran her finger over Sunset’s cheek, and seductively licked the cream from her finger. Before bursting into giggles.

Sunset meanwhile was blushing beet red, stunned at what just happened.

“Aww come on Sunny, I was just teasing you.” Twilight sighed. “I’ve had a really great time tonight, It’s a shame it has to end so soon.”

Sunset held her hand. “Who said it does? Call your mom, see if you can stay over. I’d love to spend more time with you. Tomorrow’s Saturday anyway so I don’t think she’ll mind.”

“Well, ok Sunny. But I’m not as easy to get in bed as you might think.”

Sunset blushed again before smirking. “Knock it off Twi, you know I didn’t mean it like that.”

Twilight giggled. “I know, Rarity told me I should try a bit of flirting. Is it working?”

Sunset kissed her cheek. “Definitely.”

Twilight called her mom who told her it was ok to stay the night with Sunset. The two walked hand in hand from the restaurant heading for the park, they sat on a bench and gazed at the sun beginning to set.

“Hey look, I’m watching the sunset, with Sunset.” Twilight chuckled.

Sunset rolled her eyes. “That was terrible Twi, but I gotta admit I love the landscape of colors that the setting sun shows off. All the reds and yellows, oranges and browns. It all comes together to make the end of the day magical, of course it’s even more magical when you have someone to share it with. She said placing an arm around Twilight and pulling her close.

Twilight snuggled her head into Sunset’s side before sighing contentedly. “I could do this all night Sunny, but maybe we should go home before it gets cold.”

“One more thing before we go, Twilight. Let the setting sun remind you of this moment.”

Sunset leaned in slowly and kissed Twilight. Twilight melted into the kiss which lasted a few tender moments before being broken. Both of them stared into each other’s eyes for a moment longer, hand in hand before leaving the park behind.

The two of them headed for Sunset’s apartment and once inside they both stripped off their dresses and got a good look at each other barely clothed.

“Wow Sunset, you’re even hotter without the dress.” Twilight said with her mouth half open.

Sunset smirked. “Yeah, I know. You’re not half bad yourself Twi, a little thin maybe, but some gals like that. I know I do.”

They changed into pyjamas and sat on the couch cuddling into each other again, after another half hour Twilight yawned loudly.

“Sorry Sunny, I guess I’m a little tired, today took a lot out of me. I was a bundle of nerves before our date, but I started to relax when I saw how well things were going.”
“I felt the same Twi, I’ve only got one bed so unless you want to sleep on the couch, we’re sharing it. It’s a big bed, definitely big enough for two. I just never had anyone else in it.”

“What about Flash?”
“That was when I was more focused on ruling the school than loving someone, and even then I wouldn’t have slept with that dork if he paid me. He’s a goofball, and I’m sure somebody will take him. Wallflower was giving him an eye last I saw, maybe she’ll say something to him. But nah I never really felt anything special between us. I didn’t feel anything special with anyone until I met you. You lit a fire under me that I hope never goes cold. I love you, and I really hope this works out because it seems too perfect to be true. The sun won’t set without a twilight sky to greet its passing. That’s what I think.”

“Wow Sunset, I had no idea you felt that strongly about me, that’s a beautiful line too. I care deeply for you more than I have for anyone or anything else. All I want is to lie on your lap while you caress my face and look down at me, smiling and content. Rarity told me I might be a bit submissive but I can’t help it around you. You make me feel safe, like I can let my guard down and be happy without having to show a high level of intelligence. I love you too Sunset. Let’s go to bed.”

They climbed into bed together, Twilight instinctively cuddled her head into Sunset’s chest and made herself comfortable. Sunset put an arm around her and pulled her in tight. They were both happy, happier than they had ever been.

“Goodnight Sunny.”

“Night Twi honey.” Sunset said, giving her new girlfriend a final kiss on the forehead.

They knew this was the beginning of something magical.
