Princess Celestia takes Queen Novo on a long deserved vacation. Wholesome fun hijinks ensue.

Princess Celestia had the fortune of being able to go on vacation. Queen Novo hasn't. Needing to unwind from the stressors of ruling her kingdom, Novo is offered by Celestia a chance to go on a little "girl's trip". She excitedly joins in, but will her insecurities affect the trip? Surely her daughter Princess Skystar can handle the kingdom while she's gone, right?

This story is set sometime after the events of Revenge of the Storm King.

Chapter 1: Needing A Break

View Online

Morning arrives at Mount Aris, and Queen Novo was still sleeping soundly. This was the first time the ruler of the hippogriffs got any real rest in weeks. She had been so busy maintaining her kingdom, working hard to make sure things have been going smoothly, negotiating new relations with other kingdoms, on top of also managing Seaquestria as well. Even with help from her daughter, Princess Skystar, the Queen was physically and mentally exhausted. So many restless nights and emotional woes took a toll on her. But now, she is enjoying every moment of her sleep. Perhaps she was visited by the Princess of the Night, but either way, she wanted to stay in bed and just sleep. But she may not be able to savor her slumber for much longer.

"Rise and shine, Mom! You know what they say, the early bird gets the worm!"

Skystar walks into her mother's room, eager to get the day started. Novo struggled to get up.

"Skystar, honey," Novo begrudgingly said, still half-asleep, "just 5 more minutes. Momma needs her beauty rest..."

"Come on, Mom." Skystar pleaded. "I made your favorite breakfast and some seaweed tea. Plus we have meeting with the Royal Sisters in Canterlot today!"

Novo reluctantly got out of bed. She loved the smell of fresh hippogriff scones and salmon bagels. It was worth getting up for. As they were getting breakfast, Skystar noticed her mother was starting to dose off.

"Is everything okay, Mom?" Skystar asked. "You seem a little off today."

Novo snapped out of her trance. "Hm? Oh, um, I'm fine. Just a little tired..."

Skystar was still concerned.

"I've just been working my behind off these past few weeks, and last night was the first time I got any real sleep. This whole thing is wearing me out. I think my feathers are starting to dull. Do you see them dulling, Skystar? Maybe I need to see my stylist. "

"You look fine, Mom." Skystar said. "Your feathers are as good as they ever looked."

"I don't know." Novo replied, sipping some of her seaweed tea. "What I could really use is a vacation! But I can't possibly take one now, not when I have so much to do both here and in Seaquestria!"

Novo looked outside and noticed the position of the Sun. She scarfed down the last of her hippogriff scones and salmon bagels, realizing what time it was.

"Perhaps we'll continue this discussion later." She lamented. "Come along, Skystar. We don't want to be late."

Novo and Skystar left the palace and took the Royal Airship to Canterlot, accompanied by several members of the Royal Hippogriff Navy. Novo always enjoyed seeing Princess Celestia. The two have quite the history together, dating back to before the Storm King's invasion. They've only gotten closer once the hippogriffs resurfaced again, and especially when the Storm King captured them and forced them to battle in his Colosseum.

At long last, the hippogriff Royals arrive in Canterlot for their meeting with the Sisters. Skystar and Princess Luna talked outside while Celestia and Novo spoke with each other in the throne room, where the Princess noticed Novo's rather sleepy appearance.

"Everything okay, Novo?" Celestia asked, concerned with the well-being of her friend.

"I'm fine, Celie." Novo yawned. "Skystar asked the same thing this morning. Just a little tired is all..."

Celestia remained unconvinced.

"I know exactly what's going on. Trying to do more than you can handle? I've done that a few times before."

"There's just so much to do, and I can't take a break as much as I really want to." Novo explained. "Even with Skystar helping me out, it's just a hassle doing so much and not getting any time to take a breather!"

Celestia was very concerned. Working yourself to the brink was not very healthy. She had a solution to Novo's problem, however.

"Luna and I once took a trip together, just the two of us. We needed to have a break after so long, and it was quite pleasant for the most part. You should do the same, Novo."

"But I possibly can't do such a thing," Novo sighed, "not at a time like this! Who would watch over things at both Mount Aris and Seaquestria? I couldn't put all that pressure and responsibility on Skystar! She's still so young!"

"Novo, you need a vacation!" Celestia wasn't fooling around. "I don't know what it will take, but you could use a break. Heck, if I have to take some time out of my schedule to go with you, then so be it. But you need some rest and relaxation, and that's final!"

Novo finally caved in. The prospect of going on vacation is tempting. She never had the chance to go on one because she had been too busy running her kingdom. She especially had to double down on her work when her husband died. She was worried about handing so much responsibility to Skystar, but she needed a long, relaxing break to rejuvenate herself.

"Alright, fine. I'll do it. But you really want to take time out of your busy schedule to join me?"

"If it means making sure you get the best vacation ever, then yes." Celestia was strong with her statement. "Plus we get to spend some quality time with each other and properly catch up! And we won't be fighting in the Storm King's Colosseum ."

Novo wasn't sure how to respond to that last comment. But she was delighted to hear that her best friend would accompany her on her vacation. A girl's trip was exactly what she needed. But how would she break the news to Skystar, and more importantly her subjects? It was something she had to think over.

"When do we start our little trip then?" Novo asked.

"Oh dear, I didn't think of that." Celestia pondered a bit. "When exactly do you want to start it?"

"As soon as possible!" Novo said. She was getting very excited about the whole thing. She looked a little embarrassed. "Um, sorry about that."

"It's fine." Celestia chuckled. "We can start first thing tomorrow."

And with that, the meeting wrapped up. It was starting to get late, and the hippogriff royals had to get back to Mount Aris. While on their way home, Skystar noticed Novo looking particularly excited. She's never seen her mother like this in a long time. She got curious.

"Okay, Mom. What's the big news?"

"What big news?" Novo tried to dodge the question. She wanted to wait until they got home to drop the news.

"You and Miss Celestia were talking about something. Something that's got you all bubbly. I wanna know what it is!"

"We just talked about important, kingdom-related things, honey." Novo said, again trying to dodge the question. "Its all things you would find boring."

"Anything else?"

"Skystar," Novo tried to keep her composure, "you're being nosey..."

"I've just never seen you this excited in forever!" Skystar pleaded. "Not since you and Dad were still together, or when you and Miss Celestia reunited. So please tell me! I promise not to tell anygriff else!"

Novo sighed. "Okay. Celestia is going to take me on a vacation."

"A vacation?!" Skystar beamed. "That's great, Mom! You definitely need one! I can totally run things while you're away!"

"Are you sure?" Novo said, feeling very concerned. "It's a huge responsibility running a kingdom, let alone two."

"Trust me, Mom," Skystar said, with beaming confidence, "I am a Princess. I've helped you out with plenty of royal business before, and besides, I'll be Queen someday. Think of it as training for the future!"

"Alright, if you insist. But it won't be easy." Novo felt a little at ease that Skystar would be able to handle things, but at the same time she was incredibly worried that her daughter might just be a little too eager. After all, she had a lot to manage.

While the reaction to the news seemed to have gone over well with the hippogriffs, it was a completely different story back in Canterlot.

"I can't believe you would agree to this, dear sister!"

Luna was not too happy when Celestia told her about taking Novo on vacation. In fact, she was fuming.

"Wasn't going on vacation enough for you? Now you decide to take another?!"

"Its not like that, Luna!" Celestia attempted to plead her case and calm Luna down. "I'm only doing this because Novo needs one. You saw how she looked today! She's working herself to the bone!"

Luna was still unconvinced. She hated the idea of covering Celestia's royal duties alongside her own. However, she did notice that Novo was a lot more tired when she saw her today, especially compared to Skystar, who was filled with so much energy.

"Please, Luna." Celestia said. "She's been through a whole lot. More than you know. Let me do this for her."

Luna thought about it. She was never close to Novo like her sister, but she understood the devastation she went through.

"Alright, fine." She sighed. "But I want you to cover my night shifts next weekend."

"Deal." Celestia said with glee. Finally, she was able to give Novo a vacation worthy of a queen. As she pranced to her room, she was pondering what she and Novo would do. There was so much of Equestria to see and experience! But then she thought it would be best to approach this at Novo's pace. Even so, Novo could barely contain her own excitement.

One thing was for certain, however: Celestia wanted to give Novo the best vacation ever.

Chapter 2: Vacation Time!

View Online

Novo was restless the whole night. It wasn't because of all the hard work she had been doing, nor was it extreme worry over Skystar. It was excitement. Pure, untapped excitement that she hadn't felt in a long time. She was finally going to get a vacation.

When she and Skystar got home the previous night, Novo held a meeting at the peak of Mount Aris to tell her subjects the news. They were a little shocked, but they were also understanding. The Queen needed to take a break from all the stressors of ruling, and they appreciated all she has done. She deserved a vacation.

And best of all, Celestia, the one she considers her closest friend, would be joining her. It was just so much to take in. She just wanted to get started, but it was still the middle of the night. So she tried going back to bed.

Dawn finally arrived. Novo got a little bit of sleep despite her restlessness. Drool ran across her face and her pillow. Her feathers were all ruffled. She seems to be sleeping soundly, until...

"Rise and shine, Mom!"

"Unnngh, just five more minutes..." Novo mumbled as Skystar came to greet her.

"But Mom, you start your vacation today with Miss Celestia!"

Novo's eyes were wide open. She sprung up out of bed and eagerly got ready. She got her luggage, along with everything she wanted to take on her trip. She excitedly awaited for Celestia to show up, prancing back and forth like a filly.

"So that's where I got my energetic nature from..." Skystar said to herself. She's never seen her mother this excited in years.

Finally, there was a knock in the door. Novo opened it, and sure enough, it was Celestia, wearing a red Honoluhoof shirt, her flowing mane in a ponytail, and her tail curled up in a bun.

"Celestia!" Novo exclaimed as she came up to give her friend a big hug. "Love the new look! It suits you very well."

"Thanks." Celestia replied. "You ready for a few days of rest and relaxation?"

"I sure am! I've been waiting so long for one! I can't believe it's actually happening! Let's go!"

"Before we do," Celestia said, "I wanted to give you a few things. You know, to really get you in that vacation mood."

"Oooh!" Novo was excited to see what Celestia got for her. "What is it?"

Celestia pulled out a yellow shirt similar to hers, with blue and light purple shells on it, and some hair-ties. Novo was in awe. She quickly put the shirt on and put the hair-ties on her feather mane and secondary tail feathers. She also curled up her main tail feathers in a bun to match Celestia.

"How do I look?" Novo asked.

"Absolutely wonderful." Celestia remarked.

"Love the patterns on that shirt!" Skystar chipped in. "Look at all the shells on it! It suits you well, Mom."

Novo went to get her things, eager to get started on her vacation. "Oh, how could I forget!" She turned around and headed into her room, where she grabbed 2 lists. "I wrote down a list of all the things I would like to do while on vacation, and what we should both do together! Of course, we can do what you want as well. It's just as much your vacation as mine."

"Thanks," Celestia said, as she grabbed one of the lists, "but I mostly did what I wanted to do when me and Luna took our trip. This one is for you first and foremost. But we can be a little flexible." She looked at the list, completely confused.

"Check on the coral gardens in Seaquestria, attend the meeting at Yakyakistan, hold the ceremony for the hippogriff fillies and hand them their pearl necklaces..."

"Oh! My bad!" Novo took the list and handed Celestia the other one. "Here's the actual list. This is all the things Skystar needs to do while I'm away." She then handed that list to Skystar. "This is very important, honey." She told her daughter. "Do not lose this."

"You got it, Mom!" Skystar replied.

Novo got their luggage, and she, Celestia, and Skystar headed to the throne room. Celestia was looking at Novo's vacation list, while Skystar bubbly bounced along. Novo was both excited and nervous. Excited to start her vacation, but nervous for feeling like she put too much pressure on Skystar.

At last, they arrived. Novo handed Skystar her crown, and she eagerly put it atop her head. Novo got slightly teary-eyed, seeing her daughter wearing her crown.

"S-sorry." Novo said, holding back her tears. "I never thought I would see you wear this until you were much older."

"Mom, it's only for a few days..." Skystar said.

"I know, I know." Novo tried to regain her composure. "It's just... your father would be so proud of what you are doing. And I'm proud of you, too. You're doing me a huge favor. I hope it's not too much pressure."

"I'll be fine. Besides, if I could help stop the Storm King, I can do anything!"

Novo and Celestia chuckled. "Don't get too cocky now, dear. Do you have that list with you?"

"Right here!" Skystar pulled the list from her wing.

"Good, good." Novo said, breathing a sigh of relief. "Now I want you to keep that list with you at all times. Under no circumstances should you ever lose it. As Temporary Queen, it is your responsibility to do everything that list says."

"I get the title of Queen?!" Skystar excitedly exclaimed, her echo ringing across the room.

"Temporary Queen." Novo remarked. "Emphasis on temporary." Skystar was still pretty happy, though. She was fidgety in her mom's throne, her boundless energy refusing to be contained.

Novo was a tad concerned, while Celestia chuckled a little at Skystar's eagerness. "If anything happens or you need my help, let me know immediately." Novo added. "I'll be there as soon as possible."

"Don't worry about a thing, Mom. I got this!" Skystar replied.

"Alright then." Novo gave Skystar a hug, then walked up to Celestia. "Ready to go?"

"Ready whenever you are!" Celestia replied. She handed Novo the vacation list and put it in her shirt pocket. The two then left the throne room, ready to start their vacation together.

"Goodbye, Mom! Goodbye, Miss Celestia!" Skystar said as they left. "I promise to be the best Temporary Queen ever!"

As they were out of sight, Skystar sat in the throne, getting cozy and thinking to herself. "What should I do first as Temporary Queen?" She asked herself. She took a look at the list her mom made her.

Meanwhile, Novo and Celestia were heading out of Mount Aris. They took to the wing and were discussing the list Novo made.

"So what should we do first, Celie?" Novo asked.

"Well, its your vacation, Novo, so it's your pick." Celestia replied. "Though the first thing on your list is 'Visit the Equestria Avian Sanctuary' and 'See a Countess Coloratura concert'. They're both in Manehattan, so why not knock two birds with one stone? Uh, speaking metaphorically, that is."

"Sure!" Novo beamed. "Plus we can do some additional shopping too! Skystar will surely want a souvenir."

The two royals soared across the sky and headed for their first destination for Novo's vacation. In but a few moments, they'll finally arrive in Manehattan!

Chapter 3: A Hippogriff in Manehattan

View Online

After a rather long flight from Mount Aris, Celestia and Novo finally arrived in Manehattan, one of Equestria's biggest and most prominent cities. Novo always wanted to visit this place, but her busy schedule wouldn't allow her. And now she can finally do so. But before she and Celestia could do that, they had to recover from their long journey. They headed for a hotel that Celestia booked for their trip. It was fairly large and luxurious.

"Wow, Celestia!" Novo looked in amazement. "This must have costed a wing and a leg! How did you get a room here?"

"I stay here whenever I am in Manehattan on royal business," Celestia said, "or any other occasion."

They soon checked into their hotel room and laid on their beds. Novo wanted to go explore the city, but her wings were sore, and so were her front legs and talons from carrying her luggage. So they decided to take this day to rest and recover from their flight. They ordered some food and told stories to each other. They even decided to relax in the swimming pool, where Novo showed off her swimming skills as a SeaPony. She and Celestia even got in a "How Long Can You Hold Your Breath Underwater" contest, though Novo had a unfair advantage, since SeaPonies don't need to go up for air frequently. After that, they went back to their room and went to bed, ready for a big day of fun and excitement.

Morning arrived, and the Sun was positively beaming. Celestia was still sacked out. Novo, on the other hand, was well and wide awake, eager to get the day started.

"Come on, Celie!" Novo tried to wake her friend up. "We got so much planned today!"

Celestia struggled to get up, but she begrudgingly did. Her mane was messy, drool ran along her face, and her eyelids were still a tad heavy. "Let me get some coffee first..." she mumbled.

"Already got it!" Novo beamed, handing her a cup of coffee.

"Thanks, Novo." Celestia took a sip. She noticed Novo was very chipper today, a sight she never expected to see.

"I see where Skystar gets her energy from." She chuckled.

"I'm just eager to do all sorts of exciting things today!" Novo exclaimed. "There's so much that Manehattan has to offer! What should we do first?"

"Well first I need to get ready. You can wait in the lobby or go get some breakfast. Then we'll discuss what we'll do."

"Oh, okay then." Novo replied. "I am a bit hungry anyway. I'll go get us some breakfast!"

Novo darted out of the room and headed for the breakfast bar. She hadn't eaten anything since dinner the previous night, and she'll settle for anything. Fortunately, the hotel had a big breakfast bar that served almost everything you could think of. Novo went ahead and made herself and Celestia some chocolate chip waffles, and grabbed several biscuits and premium Manehattan bagels. Celestia headed to the bar where she saw Novo. The Queen waved to her, and they found a suitable table next to a window that had a great view of the city.

"These bagels are delightful!" Novo said, gorging herself. "They're almost as good as the ones back at home."

"I'm sure they are." Celestia was completely surprised at Novo's huge appetite.

"So anyway, how should we go about the day?"

"Let's see..." Celestia pulled out the list of things Novo wanted to do on vacation. "Well, the Equestria Avian Sanctuary is already open, and you said you also wanted to do some shopping, so we can defiantly knock those out. And there's plenty of shops I know you'll want to visit, and by the time we are done, the Coloratura concert will be ready to start. Then, after the concert, we'll be able to catch the next train and head over to Vanhoover."

"Sounds like a good plan!" Novo said, finishing off the last of her big breakfast. She and Celestia headed out the hotel and made their first stop to the Equestria Avian Sanctuary. As they did, many of the ponies were staring at Novo. They had never seen a hippogriff in their city before, and they were in awe at her appearance. Novo knew they meant well, but she began to feel a tad uncomfortable. She wasn't use to so many ponies looking at her.

At last, they made it to the Equestria Avian Sanctuary. It was a large sanctuary for all kinds of birds, from the tiniest hummingbird to the biggest condor, and even housed magical birds like the majestic phoenix and even the dreaded cockatrice. Novo always wanted to visit this place, especially to get insight on how to help some of Mount Aris' population of tropical birds, which have started returning after the hippogriffs resurfaced.

They entered the building and were greeted by a light orange pegasus with a blue mane and a birdhouse Cutie Mark. The sounds of a thousand chirps, squawks, and tweets were heard all across. Novo was in awestruck, and so was Celestia.

"Hello!" the pegasus greeted them. "My name is Fleetfeather. Welcome to the Equestria Avian Sanctuary! I heard you two would be visiting."

"Hello my dear!" Novo said. "I'm Queen Novo, and I assume you know who Princess Celestia is. It's such an honor to be here."

"And I'm pleased to have you here too!" Fleetfeather replied. "I'm glad to have a hippogriff visit our sanctuary, let alone the Queen!"

Fleetfeather gave Celestia and Novo a tour of the facility. Each habitat was constructed to fit a certain bird's needs and the staff works tirelessly to ensure that they are happy and healthy. There was a large area where the birds could fly around and hang onto branches, and guests could even feed and pet them. Novo was particularly excited. She started whistling to the birds that came near her, and, surprisingly enough, they whistled back. Almost as if they were having a conversation with each other.

Celestia and Fleetfeater were in awestruck.

"Novo," Celestia said in amazement, "did you just... talk to the birds?"

"Of course I did." the Queen replied. "Hippogriffs have the ability to communicate and understand birds of all kinds. We have the most wonderful conversations. And Fleetfeather, honey, they told me that they are having the most lovely time at your sanctuary, and that you are your staff are doing a good job in caring for them."

"Awwww, really?" Fleetfeather blushed. "We do our best to make sure our feathered companions are getting the care they need."

Novo was quite happy to hear that.

"You know, maybe we could ask for your help on a little matter."

"Oh, certainly." Novo said. "We have plenty of time. What's troubling you, dear?"

Fleetfeather took Novo and Celestia to a special part of the building where they house their magical birds. Apparently, one of the phoenixes they have, named Pyro, has not been doing well. He just sits on his perch and doesn't interact with the other phoenixes. He also hasn't been eating much either, instead feverishly pecking at his wings, and the staff were fearing the worst. Fleetfeather believes that Novo might be able to talk to him and see what was wrong, and Celestia, having a phoenix as a pet, might also be able to help in the matter.

At last, they arrive in the phoenix enclosure, and see Pyro sitting on his perch, looking rather down. Celestia noticed that he felt a tad cold, at least by phoenix standards, and Novo tried to talk to him She whistled to him and he started to chirp back at her, and they had a small conversation. Fleetfeather was anxious and a tad nervous. Soon, their conversation finished.

"So what's wrong with him? Is it anything severe?" Fleetfeather asked.

"No, it's nothing major." Novo replied. "But he told me that he's got some ash-mites in his wings, and he's worried that if he were to fly with the other phoenixes, he might spread them. He just needs his wings cleaned, that's all."

"Also," Celestia added, "his heat perch seems to me worn out. He felt a little cool to the touch by phoenix standards. I suggest maybe getting him a new heat perch too."

"Oh, thank goodness!" Fleetfeather breathed a sigh of relief. "I nearly gave myself a panic attack! We'll definitely schedule him for his wing cleaning."

Afterwards, it was time to leave. Fleetfeather thanked Celestia and Novo for their help with Pyro, and Novo even suggested a couple hippogriffs to come join so that they can help the staff out. The pair then left the Equestria Avian Sanctuary, and Novo pulled out her list and crossed that part out.

"That's one thing knocked off the list!" She said. "And we still have plenty of time to hit up some shops before the concert!"

"Great!" Celestia added. "I'll show you some of my favorite stores. I guarantee you'll love them."

Novo was excited. They headed back into the city to check out several stores. Most of them were big, high-end stores that sold expensive and lavish things, but some of them were small little places that sold unique items. They stopped by Marecys, where Novo bought some lavish beauty products and perfume, and a couple souvenirs for Skystar. She even got some things for her sister Ocean Flow, her niece Silverstream, and her nephew Terramar. It seemed that all that shopping would mean that they would be late to the concert, but Celestia helped keep track of time.

After the shopping spree, Celestia and Novo checked the clock tower.

"We made good time." Celestia said. "Only 20 minutes until the show begins."

"Excellent!" Novo was worried she spent too much time in the shops. "What do you say we drop our stuff off at the hotel and head to the concert?"

"Of course. But let's be quick about it!" The Royals then headed back to the hotel as fas as they could, almost like a race. They eventually headed back with 15 minutes to spare, so they took a little bit of time to quickly rest before heading back out to the concert hall. And right on the nick of time too.

Novo managed to get 2 VIP tickets to this concert as a gift, but she was so busy that she was worried that she couldn't use them. But now she was able to see it with her best friend. As soon as they got in, Novo was pretty excited, but at the same time a bit down. Celestia noticed pretty quick.

"What's wrong, Novo?" she asked. "Aren't you having a good time?"

"I am, Celestia." Novo replied. "It's just I was hoping to take Skystar to this concert. She's a big, big Countess Coloratura fan. She has a few records and even a poster of her back home, and she would have loved to meet her."

"I have an idea" Celestia told Novo. "Maybe we can see her when the concert is over. You did have VIP tickets."

Novo liked the idea. Soon the lights dimmed and the special effects took hold. Thousands of ponies screamed and applauded as the Countess made her appearance. Novo hadn't heard so much noise before, not since a pod of humpback whales visited Seaquestria. It felt a bit overwhelming.

"Hello Manehattan!" the Countess announced. "Are you ready for the biggest show for Equestria's biggest city?"

The crowd road in applause and excitement. Novo tried to fit in by applauding too, and Celestia found it quite adorable.

"Excellent! Now prepare for the Spectacle!"

Coloratura would go on to perform some of her hit songs as the crowd cheered on. Novo enjoyed the atmosphere and cheered on too, even if this type of music really isn't her cup of tea. But Skystar would certainly be into it. And throughout the whole concert, Novo kept thinking about her daughter, and she began to worry a little. Giving Skystar so much responsibly while she played around for a few days. But she needed to take a vacation, and Celestia was here to help her feel at ease. But she just had that gut feeling.

Finally, after a few more songs, the concert ended and the VIPs were able to enter backstage. Celestia and Novo joined in, and many were in awe at the fact that not only was the Princess here, but the Queen from Mount Aris was too. The first VIP holder got to see Coloratura for about 10 minutes, where you get the chance to talk and hang out with Equestria's biggest pop star. Celestia and Novo waited patiently, even though they were on a strict time-crunch. They had to check out of the hotel and catch the train to Vanhoover in roughly a half hour, so they couldn't really dawdle too much. Fortunately, they were next in line.

"Next!" The bouncer announced.

"That's our que! Let's go!" Celestia anxiously said.

They entered the room and they say Coloratura in a less flashy outfit than the one she had on stage, looking more relaxed. She was sitting on a chair and ready to chat with her fans.

"Welcome! I can't wait to chat with you-"

Coloratura was in utter shock and awe that Princess Celestia has visited her, along with one of her friends. She showed her respects by getting out of her seat and bowing.

"Your majesty!" She said. "I had no idea you were here!"

"It's okay, Coloratura," Celestia was a tad flattered, "I'm not here on royal business. I'm here with my friend on her vacation."

Coloratura looked at Novo. She had never seen a hippogriff before, and she was blown away by the Queen's beauty.

"Sorry for staring. I hope I didn't offend you or anything." Coloratura said. "What's your name?"

"I'm Queen Novo, the ruler of the hippogriffs. You didn't do anything wrong, honey. I've kind of gotten use to ponies looking at me a bit. Your music is awe-inspiring, Countess Coloratura."

"Aw, thanks!" Coloratura was flattered. "I have a lot more creative freedom with my songs now that I got a better manager. By the way, you can call me Ra-Ra if you want."

Novo and Coloratura continued to talk to each other until Celestia noticed the time. They needed to get going soon.

"Sorry to cut our chat short, my dear Coloratura," Celestia interupted, "but Novo and I need to head out soon. I hope you understand."

"It's fine. I have to get ready for my next show soon."

"Wait, Ra-Ra!" Novo had one last thing to say. "I need to tell you about something."

"What is it, Queen Novo?" Coloratura asked.

"Would you ever think about coming to Mount Aris to perform? My daughter is a huge fan of yours and she would love to meet you, especially with her birthday coming up."

"I'd love to!" The Countess replied. "I'll ask my manager about it. I should be able to. I would love to visit your kingdom." She then handed Novo a poster that she signed, and it even included her trademarked hoofsie sign too. "You can give this to your daughter."

"Aw, thank you dear!" Novo beamed. "She's gonna love this."

The Royals stepped out of the room and made their way back to the hotel to get their things and check out. And not a moment too soon, for when they arrived at the Manehattan Station, the train just arrived. They boarded and headed straight for Vanhoover. As they took their seats, they looked at Novo's list.

"Enjoying your vacation so far, Novo?" Celestia asked.

"Enjoying it? This is the most fun I've ever had in years!" Novo chirped with joy. "If only Waverider was here to enjoy it with me. How about you?"

"Anytime I get to spend with you is a joy." Celestia replied. "Now then, what shall we do when we arrive at Vanhoover? We have 'Visit Neighagra Falls' and 'Dive with the sea creatures'. What do you want to do first?"

"The first thing I wanna do when we get there is lay down." Novo yawned. "It's been such a long day, and I need my beauty sleep."

Celestia chuckled. "Well, it's your vacation." She watched the stars light up the night sky while Novo started dozing off. They had a big day today, and they certainly could use some rest. The train continued forth and ultimately arrived at Vanhoover on schedule. Celestia woke Novo up from her nap, and they got their things and checked into the cabin that they rented for their stay. After unpacking, they went to bed, worn out, but satisfied. And there was still more fun awaiting them, so getting some rest for tomorrow was the best approach.

Chapter 4: Vanhoover Trails

Novo slept like a rock at the bottom of the sea. She did a lot during her trip to Manehattan, and she and Celestia arrived in Vanhoover pretty late. The first thing she did when they arrived at the cabin they were staying was crash into her bed and sleep. She didn't even unpack her luggage. Celestia took a little time to unpack before she went to bed. As the morning approached, Celestia was actually already up while Novo was still sacked out. She wanted to wake the Queen up and get the day started, but Novo tends to be very grumpy when she is disturbed from her beauty sleep. So she spent much of the time reading a book she brought with her. Soon, Novo woke up, feathers all rustled and eyelids still heavy.

"Good morning!" Celestia said. "I see you got plenty of rest."

"I haven't slept that good in months." Novo yawned. Celestia handed her some Vanhoover-branded coffee. "Oooh, this tastes wonderful! I need to bring some back home with me."

Celestia and Novo got dressed and got some breakfast. Like last time, they discussed what they were going to do for the day, using Novo's list as a reference. Vanhoover has plenty for them to do, with its vast wilderness trails and the breathtaking view of Neighagra Falls. Plus the waters are almost as clear as those around Mount Aris, and they're home to a wide variety of aquatic life. As they were eating breakfast, they discussed their plans for the day.

"Oh! Have you ever been zip-lining?" Celestia asked.

"I don't think I have." Novo was a tad confused. "Why?"

"I went zip-lining with Luna during our vacation." Celestia explained. "It was lots of fun. Neighagra Falls has a really nice zip-lining corse, and I think it would certainly be up your alley!"

"I never pegged you for being an adrenaline junkie, Celie," Novo said, taking a bite out of some wheat toast, "in fact, you're the last pony I would expect to be into that sort of thing! But we can defiantly give that a go. You know, along with other stuff too."

"Other stuff?" Celestia got curious. "All I see on here for Vanhoover is 'Visit Neighagra Falls' and 'Dive with sea creatures."

"We got the whole day to explore this place! We can see all the sights and wonders this beautiful little area has to offer!"

"At least until this evening." Celestia said. "Remember, we have to catch the train to our next stop."

I know, I know," Novo replied, "so what are we waiting for? Let's go out there and have fun! Race you to Neighagra Falls!"

"Oh, you're on, sister!" Celestia and Novo exited out the cabin and dashed towards Neighagra Falls, laughing and chasing each other like young fillies. It was refreshing for them to not have to worry abut royal duties and hang loose, even if it was for a short time. Novo especially was enjoying it. For so long she never had a break like this, and she always worried about her kingdom and her subjects, especially after the Storm King invaded. But now she was able to have so much fun. Not since she was younger did she have so much freedom.

As they raced each other, Celestia gained a slight lead ahead of Novo.

"I'm gonna beat you! Ha hah hah!" Celestia giggled.

"Not if I get to you first!" Novo excitedly exclaimed. "Think fast!"

Without warning, Novo leaped into the air and playfully tackled Celestia. They were sent rolling along the path until they stopped. The Royals were laughing up a storm. They continued to chuckle until they realized they have reached their destination.

"Oh look, we're here!" Celestia said.

They got their composure together and trekked up the waterfall. It was a long walk up, but the exercise was well needed. When they finally reached the top, they got to see a vastness of the landscape, and were in awestruck, especially Novo.

"I've never seen so much beauty outside my kingdom." She said, taking in the surroundings.

"I know." Celestia added. "As much as I love Canterlot, this has to be one of my favorite places to visit."

They headed closer to the falls, where they could hear its mighty roar and feel the droplets of water. It was here that they say the nearby zip-lining corse. Celestia got excited. "There it is! You're gonna love zip-lining, Novo!"

Novo looked at the whole thing. It seems to be going on and on. She grew a little weary.

"Are you sure this is safe?" She asked.

"Of course it is!" Celestia replied. "I've been on this one. Safe as can be! What do you say? Wanna give it a go?"

"Well, I don't know..."

"Come on, don't be a chicken!" Celestia teased.

"Hey!" Novo's feathers got ruffled. "I'll have you know I am part griffon! And griffons are part eagle if I recall!"

"Well, an eagle is a bird, and chickens are birds too!" Celestia playfully said.

"Alright, move aside, sister!" Novo walked up to the start of the corse. "Catch you down wind!"

Celestia got excited, seeing her friend try something she hasn't done before. The ponies running the zip-line corse set Novo up, giving her a helmet, a harness, and making sure she was secure. They pushed her to the edge, and she looked down, feeling incredibly nervous.

"Are you read, m'am?" The zip-line worker asked.

"Um, I uh, suppose so...." Novo nervously replied.

"See you down there, Novo!" Celestia beamed.

"Yeah, see you dow- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!

The scream seemed to echo for miles. Novo was use to flying great heights, but that was under her own wing power and control. Here, hooked up to all this stuff, she had no control, and she felt terrified. She continued to scream.

Celestia was done getting set up. Part of her felt concerned that Novo wasn't having fun, but another part felt that she would warm up to it. "Don't worry, Novo! I'm coming! WOOOOOOOHOOOHOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

Celestia went down too. She was screaming, but not in fear. These were screams of joy and fun. She enjoyed the adrenalin rush. Novo turned around, still screaming in fear, but she saw Celestia having a good time, and, after surveying her surroundings, felt a little at ease, and she actually liked it. Her screams of terror transformed into ones of pure joy. She was having the time of her life. Celestia was also having just as much fun.

Finally, they made it down to the end of the corse. Novo was the first to make it down, and while she was relieved to be on the ground, she was still giggling from the fun she had. Celestia was next, and she was happy to see Novo having so much fun.

"I take it that you had fun?" Celestia asked.

Novo tried to regain composure. "Yeah! It kind of was! But now I think it's best if we head for the beach."

"Wanting to knock down that 'dive with sea creatures' part of your list?"

"That, and it's pretty relaxing." Novo added. " Zip-lining was great, but the beach is more my speed."

The two headed to the beach, which was in close proximity to the falls. It was fairly quiet there, only a couple ponies were there enjoying the tranquility . The waves were fairly calm and the sands remained untouched. Novo enjoyed going to the beach back at Mount Aris. She enjoyed the sunshine, the sparking clear seawater, and overall peace it brought her. It relieved a lot of stress for her. But when her workload got to be too big, she was unable to go and unwind. As a part of her vacation, she wanted to at least visit the beach at Vanhoover, if only just so she could take a swim with all the creatures that lived underwater.

"This looks like a good spot." Celestia said. The pair laid down some beach towels and set up their spot. Novo grabbed a bucket and went to go look for some shells to take home as a gift for Skystar. She managed to find several good ones, but her eyes were caught staring at the falls. She got an idea. Celestia had fallen asleep, and Novo darted to the peak of the falls. She spread her wings and flew up until she was close to the edge of the falls.

There was a lot of chatter going about. So much that it woke Celestia up from her nap. She looked around and didn't see Novo anywhere, but she saw a large crowd gather near the beach. They were looking towards the falls, and there Novo was, clinging to the edge.

"NOVO!!!" Celestia was sent into a panic. "What do you think you're doing?!"

"Trust me, Celie!" Novo shouted from afar. "I know what I'm doing!"

And just that that, she let go and began to glide towards the center of the water. The glide then turned into a dive, and the onlookers watched on in both awe and fear. Celestia was panicking, and she started to fly towards Novo to get her to safety, but before she could get any closer, Novo had already dived into the water with a big splash. Seconds went by, and Celestia and the audience grew even more worried. Until...

"Woooo Hoooo!"

Novo had leapt out of the water gracefully in her SeaPony form, almost like a dolphin. The crowd cheered at the spectacle they just witnessed, and Celestia was both relieved and very upset. Novo returned to the surface.

"Come on in, Celie!" She said. "The water feels wonderful!"

"Novo, you nearly gave me a heart attack!" Celestia was far from amused. "Why didn't you tell me you were gonna do something crazy like that?!"

"Well, you got your adrenalin rush. I thought I would get mine in too."

"Zip-lining is completely different!" Celestia insisted. "You could have gotten hurt, or worse!"

"Relax," Novo tried to calm down her friend, "I use to do this all the time when I was younger. I still got it."

Celestia was starting to calm down. While she does flare up at times of frustration, she was incredibly quick to cool down.

"Sorry. I just wish you would have told me what you were doing first."

Novo looked down a little. "Yeah, I guess I should have told you." They both managed to reconcile.

"So do you want to go swimming with me?" Novo asked. "I don't like swimming by myself in unfamiliar waters."

"Let me get my gear on first." Celestia replied, as she flew back to the shore.

"I don't think that will be necessary." Novo said, as she pulled one a Pearl necklace from her shirt pocket. Wearing this allowed they user to become a SeaPony.

"Well that was certainly convenient of you! Thanks, Novo!" Celestia said, and she put the necklace, turning her into a SeaPony. She made a big splash as she landed in the water, causing Novo to chuckle a little. The two then dived down to survey life underneath the waves.

The waters were as clear as could be, and Novo was loving it. Celestia had a hard time catching up with Novo due to her unfamiliarity with being a SeaPony, so Novo had to stay with her and teach her a few SeaPony swimming lessons. But they were still enjoying the time they had together, and admiring the aquatic ambiance.

"Isn't this wonderful, Celestia?" Novo asked.

"Yeah, it certainly is." Celestia replied. "I'm use to beauty on the land. But I never knew how lovely it is underneath the water."

The more they swam along, the more that the local aquatic life began to show up. Most of it was fish, but there was the occasional octopus and small shark. They even saw a pod of orcas, and while Novo was worried that they might try to attack, the pod allowed her and Celestia to swim along with them. It was a breathtaking experience. However, it was staring to get dark out, and this meant that it was time to head back to the cabin and catch the next train.

Celestia and Novo returned to the beach, where Novo returned to her hippogriff form and Celestia gave the Pearl necklace back to Novo. They packed up their beach things and headed back to the cabin. Once there, they took a moment to rest before they packed up their things to catch the next train.

As they boarded, they began to discuss what their plans are for the next day. Turns out, Novo wanted to pay a proper visit to Ponyville. She had never been before, and always wanted to visit its famous spa, as well as visit its vast daily market. Celestia figured that they would be visiting Ponyville during their trip, and asked Twilight Sparkle if they could stay at her castle for the day. In typical fashion, Twilight was overwhelmed with nervousness, but she eventually was fine with it. Novo was fairly worried, as her first encounter with the Princess of Friendship was a fairly rocky one.

"Are you sure she'll be okay with us staying for the night?" Novo asked, sounding a little concerned.

"Of course she is!" Celestia replied. "She is my personal student after all. Why would you think she wouldn't?"

"It's just," Novo tried to keep her composure, "when we first met, it didn't go as you'd expect..."

"That's all in the past, Novo." Celestia told her. "Besides, the both of you managed to work things out in the end. There's no need to worry about anything."

Novo knew what Celestia meant, but even so, she was still worried. When she first met Twilight and her friends, it wasn't at the best of times. Novo and her kind were still living in exile in Seaquestria due to the Storm King, and after seeing both Mount Aris and her husband fall before her eyes, she grew very weary of outsiders. And she was about to warm up to her visitors, until Twilight fumbled at the last moment by attempting to steal the Pearl, and feeling betrayed, Novo sent them out of Seaquestria. Even after the Storm King's initial defeat, and the hippogriffs reclaiming their old home, and even after she and Twilight managed to make amends with each other, Novo still felt tremendous guilt, even though she was acting accordingly.

After a long train ride, they arrived in Ponyville, greeted by Twilight and her assistant Spike.

"Welcome, Princess Celestia and Queen Novo!" Twilight gleefully said.

"It's wonderful to see you, Twilight!" Celestia replied. "Thank you for letting us stay at your castle for the night."

"Um, yeah," Novo worryingly chipped in, "I appreciate the very kind gesture."

As Celestia and Novo got their luggage and accompanied Twilight and Spike back to the castle, Twilight and Spike noticed Novo feeling a little down.

"Is everything okay, Queen Novo?" Spiked asked.

"Huh? Oh, I'm fine, honey." Novo tried to be cheerful, but the memories were hitting hard.

"Are you sure?" Twilight pitched in. "I know you needed a vacation and all, but don't tell me you're not enjoying it."

"Not enjoying it?" Novo remarked. "I've had the most wonderful trip ever! So many places to visit and so many things I never got to do! I just..." She had a hard time telling Twilight about the past.

"Just what?" Twilight asked. "You can tell me."

"Just... everything that happened when we first met. I know we made up, but I still felt such guilt over the whole thing."

Twilight knew exactly what Novo was talking about. She felt particularly bad about that day too, no doubt due to being under so much pressure after the Storm King's forces invaded Canterlot, among other things.

"Isn't that when Twilight tried to take your pearl?" Spike asked. "I mean, I would be pretty mad too if someone tried taking something of mine."

"Not helping..." Twilight remarked. She then turned to Novo. "Queen Novo, I know that day wasn't good for either of us, but it's all in the past. The present is more important. You should be happy with what you have now. You can't hang onto the past forever. You can either hide from it or learn form it. I think the latter is the better choice. Don't you agree?"

Novo started to feel much better. "Thank you, Twilight. You are so wise. I should take a cue."

"Well, I did learn from the best." Twilight beamed. Celestia smiled, and Novo smiled as well.

At last, they arrived at Twilight's castle. It was already dark out when they arrived. Twilight and Spike showed Celestia and Novo the room that they would be staying in, and they unpacked and were getting ready for bed.

"If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask!" Twilight said.

"Unless it's really late at night and we're all trying to sleep." Spike added.

"Spike!" Twilight was slightly annoyed. "These are our guests. And they're the Princess and the Queen!"

Celestia and Novo chuckled. "It's okay, my dear. We won't be too much of a fuss." Novo told them. "Now go get some shut-eye."

Twilight and Spike soon left the room and Celestia and Novo got ready for bed. It was a fun day in Vanhoover, but they were defiantly worn out. And Ponyville has plenty to do, so they wanted to get as much rest as they could. They turned out the lights and went to bed, ready for whatever tomorrow will bring.

Chapter 5: Destination Ponyville

Morning arrived with the sounds of birds chirping and the Sun brightening the town of Ponyville. Celestia and Novo were staying at Twilight Sparkle's castle the previous night, and Novo was still in bed sleeping. She had always wanted to visit Ponyville, but her busy schedule wouldn't allow her, not to mention her insecurities about her and Twilight's first encounter. She always worried that she left a bad imprint on Twilight and her friends despite them making amends in the end, but after talking about it the previous night, she felt a bit more at ease. She was happily asleep until...

"Good morning, Queen Novo!" Spike had walked into the room that Celestia and Novo were staying in and saw that Novo was still asleep. "Ready to experience your first day in Ponyville?"

"Uhhhgh, just five more minutes, honey." The Queen mumbled, in a fairly familiar fashion. "Momma needs her beauty sleep..."

"I know what you mean." Spike replied. "I wish I could spend the whole day sleeping. But then I wouldn't be able to do all the things I wanted."

Novo reluctantly got up, her feathers once again rustled and some drool ran across her beak. She wiped her face and her eyelids were still a tad heavy. But she eventually got up.

"Good morning, Spike." She replied, yawning a little. "Where's Celestia at?"

"She's downstairs with Twilight making breakfast. Have you ever tired Celestia's pancakes before? They're the best!"

Spike took Novo downstairs to the dining area, where Twilight was sitting and having breakfast.

"Good morning, Queen Novo!" She said. "Did you sleep well last night?"

"I did, thank you." Novo replied. She was still looking around for Celestia. Suddenly, the Princess made her way out the kitchen.

"Novo!" she beamed. "I'm glad you're finally awake. I was telling Twilight about our vacation! Oh, and I hope you're hungry, because I made plenty of pancakes for you all!"

She gave Novo a plate of pancakes. She decided to try one, and she was love.

"These are delicious, Celie!" Novo exclaimed. "I never knew you could cook something so lovely! If we ever decide to retire, we should open up a restaurant where you serve your pancakes and I can serve some freshly baked hippogriff scones!"

Celestia was delighted. "I'm glad you enjoy them! We certainly have a lot planned today."

Novo pulled out her list to see what was left on it. Only a few things remained on there, all of which were in Ponyville.

"Princess Celestia told me you made a list of all the things you wanted to do." Twilight said, finishing off the rest of her breakfast. "I'd like to join you both, but I have so much to do here."

"That's fine, Twilight." Novo replied. "We want to experience Ponyville at our own leisure."

After Celestia finished the dishes, she and Novo were preparing to head out until they bumped into Starlight Glimmer, Twilight's personal student.

"Oh, pardon me!" She said. She looked up to see Celestia and Novo. "Princess Celestia! I didn't know you were visiting!"

"Hello, Starlight. It's nice to see you." Celestia greeted with her usual gentle tone. "I'm sure Twilight filled you in."

"I was out helping Applejack set up her booth for the market." Starlight replied. She then turned to Novo, having not met her before. "Who are you?"

"I'm Queen Novo, of the Hippogriffs." Novo said. "You must be Starlight Glimmer. I've heard a lot about you."

"Really?" Starlight felt flattered. "I've heard a lot about you too. Your niece attends our school."

"Yes, she likes to talk about it a lot." Novo chuckled. "I'd like to stay and chat, but Celestia and I have a lot to do. I'm on vacation and I want to get as much done as possible."

"Okay, I'll hopefully see you around then!" Starlight waved as Celestia and Novo made their way into town.

Novo was surprised at how bustling Ponyville was, and it wasn't just because Twilight and her friends lived there. from all the small shops to all the ponies interacting with one another, it was a very thriving community, much similar to how things were for Novo back at Mount Aris and Seaquestria. Novo got out her list and checked to see what to do first.

"So what's first on the activities list today?" Celestia asked.

"That's what I'm trying to figure out." Novo said, looking at the list. "I would really like to go to the spa. I heard it's one of the best places in Equestria to replenish your beaut-"

"QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEN NOVOOOOOOOO!!!"

Suddenly, a loud shout was heard throughout town, and a pink streak was moving at high speeds towards the royal pair. Novo grew worrisome, until the pink shape finally stopped in front of her, revealing itself to be the ever-so hyperactive Pinkie Pie.

"Oh my gosh, I can't believe you're here in Ponyville!" She said. "Twilight told me, and then I told Rainbow Dash, and then she told Applejack, and then she told Rarity, and then she told Fluttershy, and we didn't believe it at first given how we first met and Twilight tried stealing your Pearl and we were thrown out of your kingdom, but now you're here with Princess Celestia! I still need to throw you a party welcoming you to Ponyville, I have a song prepped up and everything, but I need to know everything you like from you favorite food to your favorite drink to-"

Novo put her finger on Pinkie's lips. The chatter was a little too much for her to handle.

"You're gonna have to calm down there, sweetie." Novo said. She then turned to Celestia "She makes Skystar look like she's sitting still..."

"Sorry, I just get excited when someone new comes to Ponyville." Pinkie replied. "Is Skystar with you?"

"I'm afraid not." Novo told the energetic pink pony. "She's covering my duties back at Mount Aris while I am on vacation."

Pinkie's smile slowly turned into a frown.

"But I do plan on visiting the little shop you work at before the day is over."

Pinkie's smile was soon restored. She actually baked a special cupcake for Skystar, and she wanted Novo to give it to her.

"Okie dokie lokie!" Pinkie chirped. "And be sure to enjoy your stay at Ponyville!"

"Thank you dear," Novo said, "we will." She and Celestia headed for the spa. It was already open by the time they made it. Novo was always wanting to keep her beauty in check. She loves visiting the spa to unwind after a long day, and she heard about the one in Ponyville and wanted to see what it was like. And now was her chance. They entered the spa and were greeted by he spa operators, Lotus Blossom and Aloe.

"Welcome!" They both said in perfect unison.

"Hello there, girls." Celestia said back. "We'd like the Daily Special."

The twins saw Novo, and were in awe at her beauty. Novo felt a little uncomfortable at them staring.

"Is something a miss?" Novo asked.

"Oh no," Lotus said, "we were just admiring your lovely complexion."

"Do you use seaweed wraps?" Aloe asked. "We thought about using those here."

Novo blushed. "I use them all the time. I heard great things about you two. Now let's see you give Momma the best spa treatment you can!"

The twins escorted the Royals to their spa room. First came a soothing warm bath to calm the nerves and relax the mind, then came a pedicure to give the hooves that sparkly shine. Lotus and Aloe were confused as how to handle Novo's talons, but they found a solution by using some nail filings that they use for Spike. They work as efficiently and comfortably on hippogriff talons as they do for dragon claws. Next was a soothing massage that was meant to relax. After a few hours, their time at the spa was done.

"Ah, I feel so refreshed!" Celestia beamed.

"This was, without a doubt, one of the best spa treatments I ever had!" Novo glowed. "No offense to my own royal spa workers, but you two are masters of your craft!"

"Thank you so much!" Lotus and Aloe were pleased to hear that a ruler from a foreign land was able to give them such a glowing review.

"If I ever have the time again, I would love to come back. See you girls later!" Novo said, as she and Celestia left the spa to head to the market square.

The market square had so many things being sold. Many of it was fresh food and other wares, but there were some booths selling antiques. Novo liked seeing all the interesting wares being sold, and looking at antiques and other interesting objects, something she use to do when she visited kingdoms prior to all the hippogriffs going underwater. In fact, when her husband was still alive, he use to bring her trinkets from his royal visits to other kingdoms, and her eyes would light up with joy and curiosity. And now she got to experience this again with her best friend. Novo's joy was on full display.

"Oooh, look at this, Celie!" Novo found an old book and wanted to show it to Celestia. "Must've been published decades ago."

"That's certainly interesting, Novo." Celestia said, smiling at her friend's happiness. "Your curiosity is adorable."

"Waverider use to bring me all sorts of things from his travels. Oooh, what's that?" Novo darted to the booth run by Applejack, who was selling Zapapple Jam.

"It looks like a rainbow in a jar! How cute!"

"Howdy, Princess Celestia!" Applejack said as Celestia headed towards her booth. "You on another vacation or something?"

"Hello, Applejack," Celestia greeted, "I'm actually taking Queen Novo on a long overdue vacation. She wanted to stop by the marketplace as part of her time here."

"Really now?" Applejack saw Novo still mesmerized at the Zapapple Jam. "I can see why. Looks like she hasn't gone out in a long time."

"That's why I agreed to take her on a vacation. To let her relax and unwind. She's been working so hard maintaining both Mount Aris and Seaquestria that I felt she need a break. I know that she didn't leave the best impression on you and your friends, but she has been through a lot."

"You telling stories again, Celie?" Novo chuckled. "Anyway, I'm gonna look around a little more. I won't go too far." And with that, Novo pranced along to look for more interesting items.

"Well it looks like she's having a good time." Applejack said, as she watched Novo look around the other booths in awe. "Rainbow Dash told me she would be visiting, and I was a little worried she would still be upset after, well, you know."

"Once you get to know her, she's really fun to be around." Celestia smiled. "Anyway, can I get some Zapapple Jam? Luna enjoys it and I want it to be a gift for her for covering my duties while I'm away."

"Sure!" Applejack said.

Meanwhile, Novo was looking around the market in awe at all the things she spotted. Unique foods, knick-knacks of all kinds. She wanted to get a closer look at some items at one booth, but a dark purple pony with a dark magenta mane and a trenchcoat was also looking at the same booth.

"Excuse me," Novo asked the pony, "could I have a look too?"

"Why certainly," the pony replied, "let me just move for you." She turned around revealing herself, and Novo was in utter shock. The pony had a scar on her left eye and a broken horn. There was no denying who this was. It was Tempest Shadow.

Novo gasped. A sudden wave of memories were flashing before her eyes, none of them were any good. They were flashbacks to that horrible day. Tempest was one of the Storm King's most trusted commanders, an utterly merciless and ruthless fighter. She was present during the invasion, and she watched as Waverider perished. She was also ordered by the Storm King to track down Novo when she fled. Novo was sweating, her heart was racing and her eyes were filled with fear, anger, and trauma. She started to back away slowly.

Tempest was confused. She has long cut ties with the Storm King and changed her ways. She recognized Novo and tried to walk up to her, but with every step, Novo backed away.

"Wait, I remember you!" Tempest said. "You're Queen Novo, aren't you?"

"Stay away from me!" Novo snapped. It must have been pretty loud, because suddenly everypony was looking. Celestia heard it as she was making her purchase.

"What was that?" Applejack asked.

"Oh no..." Celestia took to the air as she desperately tried to find Novo. She soon found her and headed down.

"Easy, Queen Novo," Tempest tried to calm down the Queen. "I'm not going to hurt you."

"Easy for you to say!" Novo shouted. "You were there when Mount Aris fell! You saw my husband die! You were working for that monster! Stay back, now!"

Celestia arrived just in time. "Novo, what happened? What's going on?"

Novo was too afraid to speak. She hugged Celestia and didn't let go. Tears were running across her face.

"What's wrong?" Celestia asked. "What's got you so upset?" She then saw Tempest, and then it all made sense. Tempest started to walk closer.

"I didn't mean to make her upset, honest!" Tempest pleaded. "I was going to let her look at the booth until she started panicking."

"Novo, please, regain some composure." Celestia tried talking reason to Novo, who was still sobbing. "It's okay! Tempest isn't going to hurt you! She's changed. Honest!"

Novo tried to get her emotions in check. She looked at Tempest, but the fear was still being felt. The tears stopped, and she tried to regain herself. All seemed calm at the moment, and it may seem like Novo might be willing to talk.

"Hey Temp!" Suddenly, Tempest's little partner Grubber came in with a bunch of snacks. "Have you tried any of these things? They're pretty tasty!" He then saw Novo. "Well look at that! It's that bird lady whose kingdom we wrecked all those years ago! Finally decided to come out of hiding?"

Novo's jaw just dropped. Celestia and Tempest were in utter shock at Grubber's comment. Novo's expression changed as well. She went from shock to complete anger.

"I knew we shouldn't have come here!!!" She told Celestia. She then darted off, the tears returning and running down her face as she ran before flying off from the market, crying.

Celestia and Tempest glared angrily at Grubber, who was out of the loop.

"What?" He said. Tempest then bopped him on the head. "Ow! What did I do?"

"Princess Celestia!" Suddenly, Applejack came running in with the Zapapple Jam Celestia purchased. She then saw Novo leaving in a hurry and then Celestia with Tempest and Grubber. "I guess this is a bad time to give you this."

"We'll discuss it later." Celestia replied. "Right now I'm more worried about Novo. We have to find her."

"I can help look for her." Applejack insisted. "Us Apples are the best trackers in Equestria."

"I would like to help too!" Tempest added. "Please, it's the least I could do."

"I'm not sure that would be a wise decision, my dear." Celestia told Tempest. "We know you changed for the best, but Novo doesn't."

"I insist!" Tempest was determined. "If and nothing more than to straighten things out."

Celestia remained a tad unconvinced. She worried that Tempest being there might make things worse for Novo.

"Please." Tempest begged. "Let me help find her. I want to make things right. Don't we, Grubber?"

"I still don't see how this is suddenly my fault." Grubber squeaked, though it was clear Tempest wasn't playing around. She angrily glared at the small hedgehog-like creature. "Okay okay okay! Just, chill. I'll help you guys find the bird lady."

"Okay." said Celestia. "Let's go. I'm hoping she didn't go far."

The four then left the market to go search for Novo. They were hoping she didn't leave Ponyville, otherwise the search would be nearly impossible. They would go look at all the spots that she was at earlier in the day, asking everypony in town if they saw her. And they were hoping to find her soon.

"Novo!"

"Queen Novo!"

"Queen Novo! Where are you?!"

Celestia, with some help from Applejack, Tempest Shadow, and Grubber, has been trying to look for Novo for what seemed like hours. While they were at the marketplace in Ponyville, Novo ran into Tempest. This triggered traumatic flashbacks to the Storm King's invasion of Mount Aris, causing Novo to panic. A comment from Grubber was the straw that broke the camel's back, and Novo stormed out of the market, completely upset. Now the four have been trying to find her all across Ponyville, while trying not to fear the worst, or that she might have already left.

"Any luck finding her?" Celestia said. "I'm starting to worry."

"I checked Sugarcube Corner." Applejack said. "Pinkie Pie told me she wasn't there."

"You told us to check the spa," Tempest added, "but the ponies who worked there said she didn't drop by after you all went."

"Well then, my best bet is that she went back to Twilight's castle." Celestia theorized. "I hope that she's there. Let's go!"

They all soon headed for Twilight's castle. Surely if Novo is there, or at least was there, then at least Twilight, Spike, or Starlight would have seen her. After a long walk, they made it to the castle.

"Twilight! Twilight, are you there?" Applejack called.

"Hi Applejack!" Twilight said. She then noticed Celestia, Tempest, and Grubber. "What's going on?"

"Twilight, we were wondering if Novo stopped by here at all." Celestia asked.

"No. Why would she be here? Isn't she exploring Ponyville."

"We were," Celestia explained, "but some complications arose."

"Oh dear." Twilight then saw Tempest. "I think I know what you mean."

"I tried to explain things to her," Tempest pleaded, "but she had that fight-or-flight reaction."

Twilight knew that the group was getting real nervous. They needed to find Novo and make sure she was okay.

"Maybe I can help you all find her. You look like you can certainly use it. I'm certain she couldn't have gone too far."

"We appreciate it, Twilight." Celestia replied. "Perhaps with more eyes in the sky, it'll make this little search all the more easier."

"Anything to reunite friends." Twilight said. "Let's go hippogriff hunting!"

"That sounds a little morbid." Grubber commented. Soon enough, the group began to search far and wide for Novo.

Meanwhile, the Queen herself was still incredibly upset. Seeing Tempest after so long stated to trigger bad memories, but being reminded of that faithful day in a public space was just too much. She continued to fly, tears still running down her eyes until she caught sight of a small cottage. She landed and laid down in the ground and continued to cry.

Suddenly a bunny started hopping along and noticed Novo. He looked at her for a second, and she looked back before covering her face again.

"Angel? Is that you making all that noise?"

Out of the cottage stepped Fluttershy. She heard the crying outside and thought it might have been her bunny Angel or any of the other animals that frequent her cottage. She then saw Novo weeping.

"Oh my goodness!" She ran to see what was wrong. "Are you okay?"

Novo tried to regain composure. She looked at Fluttershy, still with tears in her eyes.

"Queen Novo?" Fluttershy was in bewilderment. "I heard you would be visiting. But weren't you accompanied by Princess Celestia? Did the two of you get separated, or did you both have a big fight? What happened?"

Novo finally got up and wiped her tears away. It seems like she was finally regaining some composure.

"It's a long story." She finally said. "I don't know if I want to discuss it in detail."

"Maybe if you did, you might feel a little better." Fluttershy replied. "I mean, if you really want to."

Novo looked at Fluttershy. The small yellow Pegasus was always willing to help any creature, even if she herself was a tad on the quiet side. But she was also very understanding. And Novo wanted someone to talk to, even if she felt a bit uncomfortable about it.

"Well.... okay." Novo finally decided to talk about her problem. "I'll talk about it."

"Great!" Fluttershy beamed. "Come on inside, I'll go make us some tea, and maybe I can help you a little with whatever is on your mind."

Back in Ponyville, the search was heating up. With Twilight joining them, Celestia, Applejack, Tempest, and Grubber were able to cover a bit more ground, but unfortunately, they still had no such luck.

"Still nothing?" Celestia grew worried.

"We looked everywhere. Twice even." Applejack said, sounding fairly exhausted.

"I'm afraid we may have to accept the fact that Novo might have left Ponyville..." Twilight lamented.

"No, she couldn't have!" Celestia became very upset. "She was having the most wonderful time here. I don't want one incident to ruin the whole thing for her."

"I'm sure she'll turn up." Tempest said. "Is there anywhere we haven't checked?"

The ponies began to think. They've pretty much checked every single square inch of Ponyville. They've asked almost everypony if they saw a hippogriff come through, only for them to give the same answer of either no or yes, but they didn't know which direction she was heading.

"Have we looked at the edge of the Everfree Forest?" Applejack asked.

"No, but I certainly hope Novo didn't go there." Celestia replied. "The forest is a strange and mysterious place. If something were to happen to her, I wouldn't forgive myself."

"I doubt she would even think about going there." Twilight said. She was thinking for a moment until an idea struck. "We haven't talked to Fluttershy yet. Maybe she knows where Novo is!"

"Great thinking, Twilight!" Celestia said, feeling a little better. "Maybe Novo is with her, too!"

The ponies then made their way to Fluttershy's cottage. What Celestia didn't actually know was that Novo was, in fact, already there.

"I didn't mean to run off like that. It was just an awful gut feeling I had. My emotions got the better of me..."

Back at the cottage, Novo was telling Fluttershy about her vacation, along with the incident that happened at the market. They were also having some tea as well.

"It's just, Tempest was there when Mount Aris originally fell, and when my husband died at the hands of the Storm King. She was part of the team that tried to catch me when I escaped to reunite with the others. I know Celestia and Twilight told me not to let my past affect me, but it's really hard to let go, especially on that day. It's just too painful for me to not forget."

"I didn't know you went through such a traumatic experience." Fluttershy said, taking a sip of some tea. "But it was all in the past now. You seemed to have changed, and Tempest has changed too."

"Are you sure?" Novo asked. "I mean, how do we know she isn't keeping some sort of dangerous weapon underneath that trenchcoat she's wearing?"

Fluttershy giggled. "She just wears that now, it's kind of her new thing. Maybe if you tried talking to her, you could make amends with each other. I mean, that's what you and Twilight did after the Friendship Festival, and it worked out alright."

"I don't know, honey." Novo sipped some tea. "Twilight was very understanding and easy to talk to. I'm not so sure about Tempest."

"You wouldn't know if you didn't try." Fluttershy said softly. Novo still felt a tad unsure, but she gave a reassuring smile. She then noticed a little green bird on top of one of the birdhouses.

"Is that a ringneck parakeet?" Novo asked. "They're common across Mount Aris."

"Oh, yes it is." Fluttershy replied "You want to see him?"

"I'd love to." Novo said. Fluttershy called the parakeet over, and it flew to her. It then flew onto Novo's finger, and she started to whistle at it. The parakeet responded with a cheerful chirp. Fluttershy was in awe.

"You can talk to birds?" Fluttershy said in amazement.

"Yes, it's a trait hippogriffs have."

"That's amazing!" Fluttershy beamed. She took Novo out to her backyard. "You have to see my new birdhouses. I'm sure you'll love to meet who lives in them."

Novo saw the lot of birdhouses and was in amazement. The bird selection wasn't as vast as it was at the Equestria Avian Society, but the level of care that was put in was just as good. Novo had fun talking to all the songbirds, parakeets, and even the chickens. It seems that she was happy again. Fluttershy was also happy, mainly to see that Novo was feeling better. She decided to head back in and leave Novo in peace with the birds.

When she finally got in, she heard a knock at the door. She was confused, as she wasn't expecting visitors. Then again, she also wasn't expecting to find the Queen of the hippogriffs crying near her front porch.

"Hello?" She opened the door, and saw Twilight, Celestia, Applejack, Tempest, and Grubber.

"Hi Fluttershy, sorry to arrive so sudden." Twilight tried to explain. "We're looking for Queen Novo, and we thought she might be here. Have you seen her?

"I have," Fluttershy replied, "she's actually in the back talking to the birds. You can go see her. Well, if she's comfortable about it."

They all headed to the backyard, where they saw Novo with the birds. She looked completely different from how they saw her at the market. She was fearful and incredibly upset, but now she seemed much calmer. One thing to know about Novo was that, despite her tempers flaring every now and then, she was very quick to cool down.

"Novo!" Celestia was overjoyed, mainly because she was so worried that her friend may have already left, or worse. She trotted towards Novo.

"Celestia?" Novo was surprised, even more so when Celestia came in and gave her a massive hug. So much so that it caused a few of the birds to fly off back to the trees and into their birdhouses.

"I was so worried about you!" Celestia said, with tears in her eyes, hugging Novo tight. "We were looking everywhere for you! I thought you might have left, but thank goodness you are okay!" Novo was a little unsure of how to make of all this, and Celestia realized she was kind of making herself look a bit silly. "Well, anyway, are you alright? That's the most important question here."

"I'm fine now, Celie." Novo replied. "Fluttershy and I talked about it. I shouldn't have let my emotions get the better of me. But I'm feeling much better."

"That's great to hear!" Twilight said. "Because we brought someone who would really like to talk to you!"

"Who?" Novo asked.

Twilight and Applejack backed up to reveal Tempest and Grubber. Novo immediately got another fight-or-flight reaction, and Celestia began to worry. As Tempest moved closer, Novo started to back away slowly. But then Novo remembered what Fluttershy told her, and she let Tempest approach her.

"Queen Novo, I just wanted to say how truly sorry I am for the role I played in your kingdom's fall all those years ago. I wanted to approach you when you were at the Friendship Festival, but I was worried about how you might have reacted. I just want you to know that I am no longer aligned with the Storm King. That was probably one of the worst decisions I ever made. But I've changed. I'm trying to rectify all of the bad deeds I have done over the years and change for the better. None of the pain and suffering I caused is worth the restoration of something I have lost. It is something that I simply must live with. Can you ever forgive me?"

The Queen stared at the dark purple mare. Everypony was watching and wondering how Novo would react to this apology. It was a rather tense moment.

"Tempest Shadow," Novo finally said, "I can never forget what happened that day, as much as I want to. Watching my world fall apart before my very eyes, losing the griff I loved so much to an irredeemable monster, being forced to hide underwater to avoid the same thing from happening again! But, if there's one thing I have learned, something that I have been taught lately, is that you never let your past define you. I didn't mean to act the way I did when I saw you at the market. I think it's time we both let the past go." She then have Tempest a hug.

Celestia, Twilight, Applejack, and Fluttershy were very proud of what they saw. Novo was able to overcome the demons that haunted her that day and make amends with somepony who worked with the one responsible for causing her so much grief.

"Thank you, Queen Novo," Tempest said, "I promise to make things right."

"You already have, my dear." Novo replied.

"Oh! Before I forget," Tempest added, looking at Grubber, "don't we have something to say, Grubber?"

Grubber looked at Tempest, seeming like he was purposefully dodging the question. Tempest, however, was not fooling around.

"DON'T WE HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, GRUBBER?!"

"EEP!" Grubber was frightened and he ran up to Novo, hugging her leg. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry I'm sorry! I didn't mean to upset you, bird lady! If I didn't apologize to you, Tempest would have thrown me off a ledge, I swear! Can you please forgive me so she doesn't clobber me?!"

"Don't worry, all is forgiven." Novo chuckled, as she picked up the little hedgehog-like creature and hugged him. Everypony was relieved, and they all headed to Sugarcube Corner, where Novo had to pick up a special cupcake for Skystar. Little does she know that a surprise was waiting for her.

Dusk was slowly approaching, and the nightlife in Ponyville was starting to pop up. As the triage of ponies and hippogriff were heading for Sugarcube Corner, Novo and Tempest were trading stories.

"You mean he's still alive?" Tempest gasped as Novo was telling the story of her and Celestia's little adventure where they were forced to fight in the Storm King's gladiatorial arena. "And you fought him by yourself?!"

"Yup." Novo said. "I was determined to finish him off then and there for everything he's done. But Celestia convinced me that Waverider wouldn't have wanted it this way. So I left three big scars on his face! Think that got the message across."

"Was he as pompous and air-headed as I remember?" Tempest chimed in. "You know, he was just the absolute worst to work for. He was all 'Destroy this kingdom', 'Conquer that species', 'Why does that storm cloud look weird, you better fix it before I feed you to the ThunderWraiths!'"

The two laughed it up. Celestia and Twilight were watching them and felt very happy.

"Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever seen a sight like this." Celestia said.

"I know." Twilight added. "It feels really good to see that Novo is healing some old wounds."

They all finally made it to Sugarcube Corner, and what would happen next was completely unexpected.

"SURPRISE!!!"

The sounds of cheering ponies and the sight of confetti and other party decorations littered the air. Novo jumped a bit.

"We were hoping you would come by sooner or later!" Pinkie Pie beamed with glee. She had thrown a party to celebrate Novo's arrival in Ponyville.

"I was worried that you wouldn't come by after what happened at the market, but then I thought you couldn't leave without giving Skystar her special cupcake I made just for her! But now you're here and I am super relived that you decided to stay after all!"

Novo looked around a bit. It looked like every single pony in town was here.

"What's the matter?" Pinkie asked, looking worried. "Don't you like the party I set up?"

"Oh, everything's fine, sweetie," Novo said, "I just wasn't expecting a full house."

"Pinkie likes to outdo herself." Applejack chuckled.

"Well, in that case," Novo declared, "let's get this party started!"

The party was as lively as ever. There were games, conversations, stories, and Novo was the center of it all. What really made her feel good was the warm reception that the ponies gave her. For a long time, she was worried that the ponies would be resentful of her after the incident in Seaquestria, but if Twilight has taught her anything, it was that forgiveness was a powerful tool. All the party guests welcomed Novo with open hooves, some even saying they would love to visit Seaquestria and Mount Aris. She had never felt so accepted by others like this.

As time went on, and the night began to settle in, the party winded down. And as such, Celestia and Novo's vacation was too. As fun as it was, even with mishaps, it was time to head back home. As the guests started to head out, things calmed down, which was good for Novo, who was staring to get antsy.

"Make sure Skystar gets this." Pinkie told Novo, handing her the special cupcake she made for the Queen's daughter. "Pinkie promise!"

"Don't worry, Pinkie Pie. I'll give it to her. She'll love it." Novo replied. She took the cupcake with her, and she and Celestia left Sugarcube Corner and headed back to Twilight's castle to gather their luggage. Afterwards, they headed to the train station, accompanied by Twilight, Spike, and Tempest.

"Thank you for having us here in Ponyville, Twilight"." Celestia said. "I only wish we could stay longer."

"You both are welcome. It was nice seeing you again!" Twilight replied. "You know, in a casual way and not when there's some big threat to Equestria."

They both shared a chuckle. Twilight then turned to Novo. "Did you enjoy your visit to Ponyville? I hope what happened at the market didn't affect your trip."

"I had a lovely time here, Twilight." Novo replied. "I'm not gonna let one incident bother me. Besides, I feel like I've been away for too long, and I'm worried that Skystar bit off more than she can chew."

"I'm sure she'll be fine. She always had that spunk in her." Spike chipped in.

They gave their hugs to Twilight and Spike, and Novo turned to Tempest. "I hope I wasn't too much of a damper on your trip." The dark purple unicorn said.

"Nonsense!" Novo replied. "Like we discussed before, it's that you never let your past define who you are. I think we all could stand by that."

She then gave Tempest a big hug. It would seem that amends have finally been made.

"I would love to revisit your kingdom again. This time on my own merits, and not under the orders of some egotistical maniac."

"I'll see if we can make an arrangement." Novo said, with her talon on Tempest's shoulder.

"ALL ABOARD!!!"

The conductor made the final boarding call to Canterlot. From there, Celestia would escort Novo back home to Mount Aris. As the remaining passengers boarded, Celestia and Novo waved to their guests and boarded the train. The engine gave a loud whistle before departing the station. While Novo's first ever trip to Ponyville may not have gone as expected, she was still very happy she got to experience a day in the cozy town. But now, it was time for her to get back to her duties as Queen, and she wanted to see her daughter again.

Chapter 7: The Trip Home

View Online

Celestia and Novo were all nestled in their train cabin, having just departed from Ponyville. They would be arriving at Canterlot first thing in the morning. As much fun as their vacation together was, they were ready to get back to their royal duties.

"So, did you enjoy your vacation?" Celestia asked Novo.

"I sure did, despite some minor bumps." The hippogriff Queen replied. "But I'm ready to get home and see my subjects again. And my daughter, too."

"I know exactly what you mean." Celestia yawned. She nestled in her bed, her eyelids starting to feel heavy. "Well, I'm calling it a day. I need my beauty sleep."

"So do I." Novo said, trying her hardest not to fall asleep. "I'm exhausted. Goodnight, Celie."

"Goodnight, Novo." The Princess replied, turning off the light. The two were quickly fast asleep as the train continued on towards Canterlot.

Morning approached, and the train finally arrived at the Canterlot station. Celestia and Novo got up just in time, and they got their luggage and exited the train.

"Feels nice to be back home." Celestia was relieved that she was home again. She and Novo made their way towards Canterlot Castle, where Celestia would unpack and then take the chariot to Mount Aris to drop Novo off.

Once they finally arrived, they saw Luna in the throne room, having wrapped up a meeting with some delegates from the Crystal Empire.

"Luna!" Celestia came to greet her sister. "Looks like you did well in my absence."

"I don't even know how you manage to keep things running, dear sister." Luna replied. "Remember your part of the deal, you cover my night shifts next week."

"And I remembered to get you a little something on my trip." Celestia then pulled out the Zapapple Jam she got in Ponyville and handed it to Luna.

Luna was very delighted. "You know, you should go on vacation more often." She beamed. Celestia headed to her room, with Novo following behind her. She also waved to Luna.

Once they arrived at Celestia's room, the Princess unpacked her things. There was a lot of stuff, and Novo was stating to get antsy. Celestia realized this and felt it would be better to organize later. She and Novo headed to the royal Chariot.

"Where to, your majesty?" One of the guards asked.

"We're heading to Mount Aris." Celestia replied. "Think you can get us there quick?"

"Is a Rainboom sonic?" Another guard chipped in. They saddled up and Celestia and Novo boarded the Chariot, departing for Mount Aris. While they were on their voyage, Celestia noticed that Novo was looking a bit worried.

"Is everything okay?" She asked.

"Oh, I'm fine." Novo replied. "I just hope Skystar wasn't overwhelmed with all those responsibilities I gave her. You know how she is..."

"I'm sure she handled things just fine." Celestia reassured. They were able to see the home of the hippogriffs in the distance. At long last, they had made it to Mount Aris.

The Chariot landed with only the most grace, and Celestia helped Novo get her luggage.

"Hah, home sweet home." Novo said. She and Celestia made their way to the palace and check up on Skystar. The hippogriffs were very happy to see their Queen back, waving at her and greeting her. Some even asked how her vacation was.

"Looks like your subjects missed you. And nothing seems amiss either." Celestia looked at all the happy hippogriffs.

"Even so, there's still one griff I have yet to see. And I hope to Neptune she did as she was told."

The Royals managed to make it to the palace, and not a moment too soon. For when Novo opened the door, she saw something she never thought she would ever see in her home. Hundreds and hundreds of red crabs crawling about.

"What in the name of the Seven Seas?!" Novo was completely surprised. "SKYSTAR!!!"

Suddenly, the yellow hippogriff flew in, unaware that her mother just arrived home.

"Oh! Mom! I wasn't expecting you to be home so soon!" Skystar tried her best to stall.

"Care to explain why there are all these crabs are scurrying around the palace? And why this is the first thing I see when I come home from my vacation?!"

Skystar was starting to sweat. "Well, you told me on the list to keep an eye on the red crab population on the north side, but everygriff was complaining that the crabs were heading towards the beach where we always go to and disturbing the guests. So I thought it would be best to bring the ones that were on the beach here to keep an eye on them!"

"Well, you gotta give her some points for creativity." Celestia chuckled.

"That's no reason to bring all of them here!" Novo scolded. "You should have put them back to the north side. Now help me get them all out of the palace-OW!"

A crab managed to pinch one of Novo's tail feathers. It was a little painful, it not a minor annoyance. Skystar gave a concerned smile and Celestia chucked again. Novo was far from thrilled, however.

"I suggest we make haste." The Queen groaned, removing the crab that pinched her. "And we do so before any more injuries happen..."

With quick thinking, they all wrangled up as many crabs as they could find, and there were plenty that managed to get into some tight spaces. Fortunately, Celestia was able to use her magic to get some of them out without harming the little creatures. It took a while, but all the crabs were caught and returned to the north side. Once that was taken care of, the three flew back to the palace.

"Not exactly how I was hoping to have coming back home, but at least you didn't do any major damage." Novo told her daughter. Skystar frowned a little.

"You have to give her some credit though," Celestia chimed in, "She managed to keep everything in order. Well, minus the crabs..."

"Yes, and here I was worried that you might have done something reckless like you tend to." Novo looked at Skystar, and her stern face turned into a proud smile. "But I am glad that the place is still standing, and you managed to take in such a huge responsibility. You're on the fast track to becoming a great Queen. I'm proud of you, and I know your father would be too."

"Thanks, Mom." Skystar chirped, and she hugged her mother. Celestia watched the two griffs share their moment, when she looked into the sky.

"Well, I suppose I should get going. The Sun needs to be lowered. Gotta get back into reality sometime."

Novo chuckled. "Seems like every time we go on some big adventure, it always kind of ends like this. Well, thank you so much for taking me on the best vacation ever, Celie."

"You are more than welcome, Novo." Celestia replied, as she gave Novo a departing hug. She then trotted out of the place and headed to her chariot, ready to depart back to Canterlot.

Later in the evening, Novo and Skystar were having dinner. The Queen was baking some of her famous kelp soufflé, and Skystar was intrigued with how her mother's vacation went.

"So how was it? Did you have fun?"

"Oh, certainly." Novo replied to Skystar's question. "I got to do stuff like zip-lining, got some gifts for your aunt and cousins, visited a bird sanctuary, and ran into some old faces. And don't worry, I did get you some things, too."

She pulled out her travel bag, which had several gifts in it. Three of them were for Skystar, including a signed Coloratura poster and other trinkets from Manehattan, some shells from Vanhoover, and the cupcake Pinkie Pie made.

"Oh my gosh! Pinkie Pie made this for me?!" The hippogriff Princess squeaked with excitement. "I love it so much!"

"Figured you would, sweetie." Novo smiled. "Now then, how was your week as Temporary Queen?"

"Oh, it wasn't too bad." Skystar said, taking a bite out of her cupcake. "I did everything you wanted on the list and had Silverstream help me out a little. I don't know how you managed to do all of this by yourself. It's hard work!"

"You get use to it after a while. Though things were a lot easier to manage when your father was around. I was so worried that I put too much pressure on you, but you pulled through just fine."

The two griffs looked out the window and watched as the Sun went down and the night arrived.

"You think that next time you decide to go on vacation, you could bring me along?" Skystar asked.

Novo looked at her daughter for a second, and smiled at her. "Honey, I would love to." She held Skystar close to her wing and they watched the stars in the night sky twinkle through Mount Aris. It was good to be back home.
