A Great and Powerful Test

Trixie can't hold a candle to Twilight Sparkle or Starlight Glimmer in magic, but what about to the human Eric Reed, when he's powered by a third of Starlight's magic?

Bored, Eric Reed asks Starlight Glimmer to cast a spell to let him use magic once again, and later decides to train him a bit by teaching him more spells. When Trixie stops by, Trixie decides to "test" Eric's new magical abilities with a friendly "magic duel" with her. He proves to be better than she thought, and with Trixie's pride on the line, it becomes a more and more heated duel.

While this isn't a "sequel" to it, this story does take place after the events of my "A Giant Adventure to Equestria" story. Here's the link to it.

Chapter 1: Let the Magic Duel Begin!

View Online

Welcome back, Eric Reed here.

Well, today I was sitting in a chair in my room at Twilight's castle, bo-o-o-o-red, trying to think of something to do. I was tired of reading, so that was out. Twilight had just left on a friendship mission, and most of the others were busy, so it was just Spike, Starlight, and me at the castle. Spike was taking his "beauty nap" while "Starie" was reading in her room.

It's times like these I wished I were a Unicorn, so I could use magic to amuse myself. But as I was thinking that, I remembered that Starlight could make me one, kinda, by casting a spell to temporarily give me a small Unicorn-like horn on my head, and a third of her magic.

Knowing that Starie wasn't gonna be doing anything that'll require her to be at full-power anytime soon, I went over to her room, and knocked on her door.

"Come in."

Opening the door, I saw her on a chair, reading on her desk.

"Hey, Starie, I have a favor to ask."

"Ok, what is it, Buggie?"

"Remember that spell you cast to give me a little Unicorn horn before we faced Chrysalis? Could you recast that spell on me?"

"I could, but why?"

"I'm so bored, and I want to play with some spells to amuse myself for a while."

"Eric, you really shouldn't just 'play' with spells without mastering them first. Even if you know the basics on how to do a few spells from watching our cartoon, you're not truly trained in magic. It can be dangerous to just mess around with them with your level of knowledge on Unicorn magic."

Trying not to laugh at the irony of getting this kind of lecture from Starlight, I asked, "What if I promise to just use levitation on stuff like cups or books? That's not a big deal, since all Unicorns can do that, right?"

"Oh, well, if that's all you want to do, that's no problem." Starlight stood up and walked closer to me. "How long do you want the spell to last? I can have it last up to four hours."

"How about the whole four hours?"

"Figures you'll want that. Okay, just stand still, and I'll cast the spell."

Starlight's horn glowed light-blue, and she fired a small blue beam of magic at me. I grew a very small horn on my head, gained a third of Starlight's magic, allowing me to use spells, though I only knew how to do a few. Plus, she only wanted me to use basic levitation, so it wouldn't had mattered if I did know more.

I tried to levitate a book on Starlight's drawer, just to make sure she got the spell right, and I could do it. "All right, thanks, Starie!"

"No problem, Buggie! Have fun! Just don't forget that you said you'll only use levitation, ok?"

"I remember, and I'll just use that," I left Starlight's room, and headed to the library part of the castle, where I had the most stuff to levitate. You know how Twilight has a lot of books, right?

In the library, I was "jugging" three books over my head using levitation over my head, and it was pretty fun.

As I was wondering how Unicorns could be bored if they can do stuff like this anytime they wanted, a voice playfully called out.

"Only three books, Buggie? Can't you do more than that?"

Surprised, I lost the grip of the books in my levitation, and they landed on my head. I turned and saw Starlight, giggling about what she just made me do.

"Hey! You meant to make me do that, didn't you?"

"Maybe," Starlight said with a smirk on her face.

"But, what are you doing down here, Starie? I thought you wanted to read?"

"Yeah, but I can do that later, you know I'm not like Twilight. But, I was thinking about how I said you're not trained in magic."

"I remember, and that was why you...wait. Are you gonna say what I think you are?"

Starlight's smirk turned into a mischievous grin. "Yep! You want me to train you a little with your -- well my -- magic, while that spell on you is active?"

"Oh, yeah, Starie! Where you want to do it?"

"Let's go outside and do it, okay?"

Because of how Trixie once accidentally teleported the Friendship Map out of the castle when Starlight was teaching her teleportation, Starlight wanted to teach me outside, right outside the castle. She didn't want anything like that happening again! Because I'd be firing magical beams, like how Starlight does when she uses most spells (save for a very few like teleportation) I left my hat in the castle, so it wouldn't be in the way.

"What do you want to teach me first?"

"All right, I'll first teach you a weak growth spell. To do it, you must..."

During the next hour, Starlight would try to teach me some spells that she thought I'll be able to do, though I couldn't fully get them down. It turns out, the reason I could teleport as "easily" as I did when up against Chrysalis, was because I was so emotional at the time. Without that fire, it's not so easy to for me to do spells, even with Starlight directly teaching me how to do them. It made sense since Starlight said her magic's partly linked to her emotions, and I was using her magic.

As I was struggling with one of them, a new voice called from behind me and Starlight.

"Having trouble, newbie?"

It was Trixie, without her magician get-up, chuckling. Starlight and I had already told Trixie about the spell she used to give me the ability to use magic. She quickly figured out we did it again, so she wasn't that surprised that I was using magic.

"Yeah, I guess I am."

"Hi, Trixie. What are you doing here?"

"I was stopping by to ask if you could help me with my next show. Why's Eric using your magic again?"

"He was really bored, so he asked if I could give him the ability to use magic. Then I thought I'll give him a little training."

"I see," Trixie came a bit closer to me, with a smirk. "So, how many times you messed up, Eric? forty? Fifty times?"

"I haven't messed up that many times!"

"Yeah, Buggie, you only messed up thirty-five times."

"Not helping, Starie. And you were keeping count?"

"Aw, don't worry, Eric. It's not easy to do spells right away. Even I, the Great and Powerful Trixie, had a little bit of trouble at first."

Now it was my turn to put a smirk on my face. "Like how you kept saying 'teacup!' thinking that's how you do transmutation spells, Trixie? Yeah, I saw you whine to Starlight when you couldn't do it."

"Hey! I didn't whine to her when I had trouble doing it!"

Starlight chuckled, and said, "All right, that's enough, you two. But Eric really is doing well, considering he wasn't born with Unicorn magic, and barely has actual experience in using it."

"Oh yeah. It's like our 'cartoon' can teach spells to otherworldly beings better than we can to other Unicorns."

Trixie then thought of an idea.

"Hey, I know what we can do. Eric, let's have a magic duel!"

I put a finger to my chin as I thought about it. "A magic duel? You mean like the one you and Twilight once had? I don't know, Trixie..."

"Come on, don't be like that. You know I'm a better pony now then I was back then. This will just be a friendly little duel."

Starlight cut in and asked, "You just want to finally beat somepony - er - someone, in a magic duel with your own magic, don't you Trixie?"

"What, no! That's not it! I just want to test Eric here, and see what he can do."

Trixie's no Twilight or Starlight, but she's still far more experienced in magic than me, and better in spells than a Unicorn like Rarity is. Unlike me, Trixie was born with her Unicorn magic because she's, well a Unicorn. And Starlight's been teaching her too, so I thought I'd had little chance to beat her. But, maybe the fire of competition could help me learn the spells Starlight's trying to teach me better. Since Trixie might start bugging us if I kept saying no, I figured why not?

"Okay, Trixie, you're on!"

"You sure about this, Buggie?"

"Yeah, Starie, I'm sure. I love a challenge, you know."

"That's the spirit, Eric! I knew I liked you for a reason. Let's do it!"

"Wait, what rules will we use, and what spells do we use for it?"

"Well, Buggie, Trixie, at least more-or-less, knows the spells I was teaching you, so we could have those spells be the ones you two use."

The three of us moved to a wider area that's better suited for my and Trixie's magic duel. Starlight decided the rules would that Trixie and I would each use one of the spells Starlight was teaching me, and that Trixie's at least familiar with, in a best-of-five magic duel, with the first to win three rounds winning our duel. Whoever did the spell in a round best, or at all, would win the round. Starlight would be the judge.

The first spell Starlight had us do was a materialization spell: creating something out of nothing.

"Okay, Trixie, Buggie, you each must materialize as big a red rubber ball as you can, and whoever ball is the biggest, wins the first round."

"Well, you heard the judge, Trix. Ladies first."

"Fine by me, I wanted to go last anyway"

"Oh, ha-ha."

In case you're wondering why Trixie's picking on me so much (even for her), and why I seem to be doing it to her a bit too, this is actually part of how we became friends. But outside of her barbs, she's actually really nice, once you get to know her. The two of us love taking friendly jabs at each other like this. It's even a reason why she likes me, even if it does sometimes get on Starlight's nerves. Starlight mainly just tolerates it when Trixie takes jabs at her, but I truly enjoy her barbs...most of the time. Since Trixie knows it, she doesn't hold back, like she tries to do with Starlight.

And just in case you're wondering: no, Trixie doesn't like me.

But anyway, back to our magic duel. I pictured a big red rubber ball in my head, and focused it on a spot in front of me. I fired a light-blue beam on the ground, materializing the same red rubber ball I had pictured in my head. It was about five inches tall. Guess the fire of competition did the trick, because It could barely materialize a thing when Starlight was trying to teach me this spell before.

With a smile, I yelled out, "Yes, I did it!"

"Way to go, Buggie! that's by far the best you're done with that spell!"

"Not bad, newbie, not bad. Now stand back and let The Great and Powerful Trixie show you how it's done!"

Because Trixie didn't have her hat on when she came by, she didn't have to worry about it being in the way of her magical beams. Her horn glowed, and she fired a pink beam on the ground, creating the same kind of red rubber ball I did, but it was slightly smaller, but only by about a third of an inch.

Starlight put the balls we created beside each other, and took a close look at them. "Eric's ball is bigger, so he wins round one!"

"Ha! In your face, Trixie!"

Safe to say, Trixie wasn't happy. She whined, "What?! I lost?! How could I lose to Eric?!"

I danced around a bit, waving my arms (Hey, I never said I was a good dancer) as I continued to gloat. I didn't think I'll actually beat Trixie once, so I got a little carried away with my gloating. And yeah, she wasn't enjoying that.

"How you like losing to a 'newbie' Trixie? Oh yeah, Eric Reed, one. 'The Great and Powerful Trixie', zero!"

"Okay, good job, Buggie, let's go on to round two."

"Yeah yeah, let's go to round two. That was just beginners luck, newbie."

For round two, Starlight would toss some small rocks in my or Trixie's direction (but not at us) with her magic, one at a time. We had to catch and hold as many as we could with our levitation, and whoever can do the most, wins. Unlike round one, this felt more like a test on the limits of my levitation skills, then a test of spells. But, Starie's the judge, so what she said the rules are, does. Since I won the first round, I went first again.

"Okay, you ready, Buggie?"

"Yep!"

"All right, here they come!"

"Don't crack under the pressure, newbie."

"You be quiet and let me focus, so I can go up 2-0!" Yep, I think I'm as bad as Applejack and Rainbow Dash, when it comes to wanting to win competitions.

Starlight rolled her eyes, getting annoyed at the smack-talk. She picked up two rocks with her magic, and toss them near me, and I caught them with "my" magic, with ease.

"Not bad, Buggie, but I'm gonna keep them coming."

Starlight tossed more rocks, one by one, and once I got to five rocks, I started struggling.

"What's wrong, newbie? You can't handle holding a few rocks?"

Hearing that made it a bit easier for me to hold them, and Starlight tossed one more, which I barely caught. But, once I tried to grab a seventh rock she tossed. I reached my limit, and couldn't do it. It made me drop all the rocks I were holding up.

I wiped my head, a bit tired from the effort. "Whew, that was harder than I thought."

"Six rocks, that's good for your first try, Buggie. Okay, your turn, Trixie. You ready?"

"I'm ready, Starlight. This is nothing: I could win this with my eyes closed."

"I'll like to see you try it, Trixie."

"Well, I don't feel like it, so maybe next time I will. Throw me some rocks Starlight!"

Starlight groaned, then, just like she did with me, Starlight tossed two rocks in Trixie's direction, which she easily caught. Then she tossed more, one by one, till Trixie was levitating six rocks. Unlike me, Trixie was still barely breaking a sweat. With a snug face, she looked at me to make sure I knew it.

"You see, newbie? I told you this was nothing!"

I stood there, thinking I should've remembered that Trixie probably would be able to levitate things a lot better than me. And that I probably should've kept my mouth shut.

Starlight tossed a seventh rock, which Trixie caught easily. Still looking at me, "The Great and Powerful Trixie" stuck her tongue out, to further rub it in.

Starlight announced, "All right, Trixie wins round two, so it's tied at 1-1!"

With her most snug voice yet, Trixie told me, "Well, newbie? Still think you can beat me, The Great and Powerful Trixie?"

"It's not over yet, Trixie!"

At this point, I probably should've admitted that I just might've bitten off more than I could chew, but the fire of competition wouldn't let me. Round three was about to start, and I wanted to take down Trixie in this duel!

My Great and Powerful test was just beginning.

Chapter 2: Rounds 3 and 4

View Online

At Twilight's castle, I was bored, so I asked Starlight to cast a spell to let me use a third of her magic for a while, and she agreed. Only a few minutes later, she offered to train me a little on how to use more spells, till her spell on me wore off. I jumped on her offer.

A while after we went outside so Starlight could teach me, Trixie stopped by, and wanted to beat test my newbie magical skills, so she challenged me to a best-of-five magic duel. And, I am a "newbie" in using spells, so Trixie wasn't just saying that to pick on me: she was right.

We're tied at 1-1. Starlight's the judge for it, though the way Trixie and I were going, she'd probably have to double as referee soon. The two of us had been trading even more jabs and little insults at each other than we usually do in our normal friendly banter that we both like doing, so our duel's beginning to get a little too heated. Starlight was about to tell us what we'll have to do for round three. And she's hoping Trixie and I would cut out the insults we're doing on each other.

"Okay, guys. For round three, you'll need to do transmutation spells on as many rocks as you can, in ten seconds. You can pick what you want to turn them into."

Starlight used her magic to dump a bunch of rocks in front of us. This was the second time she used rocks as part of the duel. Heh, I guess Maud's rubbed off on her.

I had a very good idea on what Trixie was going to pick to turn the rocks into, and teased, "let me guess, Trixie: you're gonna turn them all into teacups, aren't you?"

"Maybe, newbie. A good magician never reveals her secrets, you know. Especially not a great and powerful one!"

Starlight thought about how Trixie already had turning things into teacups down already, and wanted to even the playing field by telling Trixie, "Wait, Trixie. Now that I think of it, you're mastered turning things into teacups. So, to make it fair to Eric, you can't pick teacups to turn them into."

That got Trixie a little nervous, and she frowned. I guess she doesn't use her transmutation spells much to turn things into something besides teacups.

I took this chance to give a smirk, and taunted, "What's wrong, 'Miss Powerful'? You don't think you're gonna lose, since you can't pick teacups, are you?"

Trixie tried to play it off by shaking her head. "N-no! I don't need to choose teacups! I'll win no matter what I'll pick."

"Well, let's find out, 'Miss Powerful'. Since you won the last round, you're up first."

"You don't have to tell me that, newbie. When do I start, Starlight?"

After giving an eye roll due to my and Trixie's bickering, Starlight answered with, "I can give a countdown, If you two can cool it! You ready?"

Trixie nodded her head.

"Okay, so three...two...one...go!"

Trixie fired out a bunch of purple beams at the rocks, one by one. A lot of her beams did nothing, but others turned the rocks into pink coffee mugs, with an outward design very similar to those off-limit teacups. When her ten seconds were up, she successfully turned five rocks into those pink coffee mugs. Because they looked so much like the teacups she couldn't pick to transmute the rocks into, I thought that might've been cheating.

Pointing a finger at the coffee mugs, I yelled, "Foul! I call foul! Those look too much like those teacups Starlight said you can't transmute the rocks into! If I had a red challenge flag, I'd be throwing it right now!"

Trixie defended herself with, "No, it's not cheating! Starlight said I can't turn anything into teacups. She didn't say I couldn't turn the rocks into something that looks like them."

"B-But, they look too much like those teacups! Don't they, Starie?"

Starlight, while a bit annoyed and rolled her eyes again, still thought what we said for a second. Then told me, "Well, I only said that Trixie couldn't turn anything into teacups, Buggie. And those aren't teacups, so they're fair game."

Trixie stuck her tongue out at me. "See? I told you it wasn't cheating!"

"All right, fine. You got me on that one. I'll just turn more rocks into...uh...cubes, and win the old-fashioned way!"

Feeling somewhat even more cocky, Trixie laughed, "Good luck, newbie, you'll need it!"

Starlight, probably thinking I would return that insult, quickly cut in with, "All right, Buggie. Get ready in three...two...one...go!"

I focused on one rock on a time, and pictured them as a blue cube, firing light-blue beams at them from my little "Unicorn" horn. I couldn't fire them as fast as Trixie, because she's much more experienced at this. But, perhaps because I was concentrating a bit harder, and not trying to go as fast as I could, a better percentage of them were successful in working. But, after my ten seconds were up, only four rocks were turned into blue cubes.

"Sorry, Buggie, but that's only four cubes. So Trixie wins round three!"

I facepalmed weakly, as I was tired from the effort. And being down 2-1 didn't help.

Of course The Great and Powerful Trixie, on the other hoof, was in a much better mood. She was just one win away from winning a magic duel without an Alicorn amulet, and she was enjoying it! She even took a page from my playbook, when I danced after winning the first round by getting on her hind legs, walked backward (Or "Moonwalked") to farther gloat. Guess I shouldn't had done that, huh? Not to mention, after spending so much time with Twilight since I got to Equestria, I have some of her in me, so in a way, Trixie was beating Twilight in a magic duel!

There wasn't much I could say at this point but, "You haven't won this yet, Trixie!"

"Yet."

Round four would be who can create the strongest magical shield. We each would create a shield and keep it up, and Starlight, holding a stop-watch, would toss rocks at them...and yep, Maud has got to have rubbed off on Starlight. Like before, Starie won't throw them at us, but at our shields, which we'll have at an angle. Though, at this point, she probably would want to throw one or two at me and Trixie, to shut us up! If so, this is the closest she can come to do it, without actually doing it. Who can keep it the shield the longest, wins round four.

As I said before, because Trixie's up 2-1, if she wins this round, she wins the magic duel. And, since she won round three, she'd go first again.

With her grin the biggest yet in this duel, Trixie bragged, "Well, it's been fun, newbie, but this will be the last round of our 'fun'."

With my arms crossed, I told her, "We'll see, 'Miss Powerful'."

Trixie put up a purple barrier, and Starlight tossed rocks at it. Trixie wasn't struggling much the first ten seconds, but after that, she grimaced, and was quickly losing energy to keep it up. After a few more seconds, her barrier broke. I really didn't think she could've lasted that long, and was truly impressed.

"Pant...pant...how I do, Starlight?"

"Fifteen seconds! That's really good, Trixie!"

"Hmm. I gotta admit, that was a little impressive, Trixie."

"Ha, a 'little'? I bet you won't even last five seconds, newbie!"

"Augh! Will you two cool it, already?!" Starlight turned to me. " Okay, Buggie, it's your turn!"

I pictured in my head what my shield would look like, and focused it on a spot right in front of me, and a light-blue shield appeared. I willed it beside me, in the same way I do when I levitate something.

"I'm ready, Starie! Let them fly!"

With that, Starlight began throwing rocks at my shield. Like Trixie, I didn't have much trouble at first. But about nine seconds in, it was my turn to start grimacing as it got hard to keep it up. It was really close to breaking at about thirteen seconds, but if it did, I'd lost the magic duel. Worse, Trixie could see I was struggling, and had a big smirk on her face, thinking she was about to win. But, I thought about that, and the spirit of competition kicked in, letting me last till seventeen seconds till my shield finally broke.

"Wow, Buggie, seventeen seconds! I really didn't think you could've held that shield for so long! And you win round four!"

I was tired, but the thrill of victory gave me enough energy to jump up in the air and yell, "YES! I win!"

That big grin Trixie had, when she thought she was moments away from winning, turned upside down into a big 'ol frown, and whined, "Hey, no fair! I was about to win! Even if it was impressive..."

Wow. She actually gave me a compliment. Starlight heard it, and said, "See? you two can give compliments, and still compete, right?"

"I guess we can, Starlight. Still, I could've had my shield last longer if I wanted, but I just wanted newbie here to have a chance."

Now with a smirk on my face, I told her, "Yeah, sure you did, 'Miss Not-So-Powerful'."

Seeing that was short-lived, Starlight groaned, facehoofed, and announced, "Well, Trixie, Buggie, you two are tried at 2-2, so the next round will settle it. Round five will be a test using a growth spell."

Hearing what Starlight decided on what Trixie and I would have to do in the final round, I gulped. Of all the spells Starie was trying to teach me, that was the spell I struggled with the most. And worse, Trixie didn't look worried one bit.

At that moment, it was looking like it would be a great and powerful victory for The Great and Powerful Trixie. And knowing her, she'd not let me forget it anytime soon, if I was unable to pull off an upset.

Chapter 3: Final Round, And a Confession

View Online

Tied at 2-2, it's about to be the fifth and final round of a magic duel between myself and "The Great and Powerful Trixie".

While we always loved trading friendly jabs at each other, the spirit of competition got us to overdo it, and our "friendly" magic duel became...not so friendly. Starlight, our judge for it, had been trying to put up with it, but she's nearing her limits!

Round five/final round was going to be a test on a growth spell. Starlight would put a pebble in front of us, and we would use the spell to grow it as much as we could. Whoever did it the best, would win the round, and the magic duel! And Starlight couldn't wait for it to be over!

I struggled with a growth spell Starlight tried to teach me earlier, so I wasn't feeling exactly confident. Trixie seemed to be, and she could even tell I was nervous. Of course, she was going to try to milk it.

With a smirk, she leaned her head closer to me, but stayed about a foot away, and teased, "What's wrong, newbie? You don't look so good."

I shook my head, still looking at my pebble. "Uh, no, I'm feeling good, Trixie. I was just...thinking of my victory dance is all."

That smirk of Trixie's got even bigger, as she inched even closer beside me. "Suuure you were."

Starlight rolled her eyes (again) and groaned, "Come on guys, cut it out! We're almost done with this magic duel, so let's just get this over with."

Starlight picked up a pebble with her magic, and placed it right in front of me, on a spot on the ground that didn't have grass growing, and it was about two feet away. Since I won the previous round, I'd go first.

Starlight noticed something might had been up, so instead of just telling me to get ready, she asked with a bit of a frown, "Buggie, you remember how to do the spell for it, right?"

With a finger on my chin, I answered, "Uh, yeah, I think I remember. I just have to picture it as a bigger and bigger rock in my head, and fire my (Starlight's) magic at the pebble, right?"

Starlight smiled and nodded her head. "Yep, that's how you do it. You ready?"

"Yep, I'm ready, Starie."

Trixie, who still had her head leaned beside me and still grinning, finally moved her head away, and took a few steps back. "And I'm ready to win this, so hurry up, newbie."

"Yeah, yeah"--I waved my right hand up and down at Trixie --"Hold on to your horn, 'Miss Powerful', I'll about to do it."

Starlight did yet another eye roll and groaned, "Just focus on doing the spell, Buggie. Get ready in three, two, one, go!"

I pictured a slightly bigger size of the pebble in front of me in my head, and focused that image on the pebble. I fired a continuous light-blue beam at it, and it slowly grew. As I kept releasing the magic, it grew by about three times it's size till it stopped growing. I couldn't get it any bigger, so I stopped firing magic, and panted, since it tired me out. It was only about a half an inch wide though, so it wasn't too big a growth. Trixie knew it too, so she had some more fun with me.

Trixie walked up beside me again, about where she was standing the last time she milked it. But instead of leaning her head to me, she leaned it down to take a closer look at my bigger pebble/rock, and laughed, "Wow, that's it? I know you're a newbie, but I thought you'll do better than that!"

Not playing (much) attention to Trixie, I stopped panting, and turned my head to Starlight. "Uh, can I get a do-over, Starie?"

Trixie wasn't gonna have that, and she shook her head hard to Starlight. "No! Don't give him a do-over, Starlight!"

Starlight turned her own head and eyes up, thinking about it for a couple seconds. She lowered it, looked at me, and shook her head. "Nope, sorry, Buggie. But, you really did do good. Growth spells can be hard without a lot of training."

Well, that did make me feel a little better, since Starlight seemed like she really meant it, since she's not a good liar. But the way Trixie was acting, she was really gonna do it better, and win. With a big 'ol confident smile, Trixie was ready for her turn. "But it won't be good enough, newbie! Get ready to lose!"

Thinking I was about to lose, I looked down a bit, and sighed, "Fine, Trixie. It's your turn now."

Trixie, who was still standing beside me, now leaned and tilted her head very close to mine, even closer to where it was before, grinning more than ever, and lowered her eyelids about halfway. She was so close, her horn was less than an inch away from touching my head. "Hmm? No comeback this time, newbie? That's a surprise."

Starlight tossed a pebble on the ground, right in front of Trixie with her magic, to get her to leave me alone. It was about a foot away from my rock, and it was also on a part of the ground that didn't have grass growing on it, and Starlight groaned, "Augh! Come on, Trixie, let's just do this and end this silly magic duel. Go in three, two, one, go!"

Careful not to move any closer to Trixie, I sidestepped in the other direction to give her some room, but not because I was mad at her -- just annoyed -- but it was really just to make sure her horn didn't poke my eye, because it was so close. Unicorns had done it before in similar spots without meaning to (Starie even did it once!) when I was still getting used to always being aware of their horns. It obviously hurt when it happened!

Trixie's horn glowed, and she fired a continuous purple beam at the pebble in front of her, and it grew to...about the same size as the pebble I grew, then she stopped firing magic, slightly out of breath. Starlight picked up the rocks with magic, and held them to her face to look at them closely. They looked just about the same size, and she couldn't tell which was bigger.

Leaning her head close to our rocks, Trixie asked, "So, which rock is bigger, Starlight?"

I stepped right beside Trixie, and also leaned my head closer to the rocks, about as close as she was. "Is it mines? Trixie's?"

Squinting her eyes, Starlight muttered, "Uh...I can't tell guys. They look exactly the same size."

Starie sat the rocks back down on the ground they were laying on, to try to think of a way to tell which was bigger. But both Trixie and I picked up our rocks to look at them ourselves. Trixie used her magic to do it and I, forgetting I still had Starlight's magic, bent down, and picked up my rock with my hand, and we both tried our best to find a way to say our rock was bigger.

"Wait, Trixie, my rock is bigger. Take a look at them from this angle, see?" I put my rock closer to Trixie's, and pointed at the "angle" with a finger.

Trixie in turn shoved the rocks closer to my face with her magic. "No way! My rock is bigger. You see, Eric? This part is like one-tenth bigger!"

"No it's not, and besides"-- I turned my rock over --"my rock is bigger at this angle by about an eighth of an inch anyway!"

Trixie shook her head. "No, you're just seeing things!"

The two of us turned to directly face each other, as Trixie levitated her rock to her side, and I put the hand with my rock down, so they wouldn't be in our way. Since we were already standing close beside each other, we were looking right in each other's eyes. Trixie's horn was even touching my forehead, which I paid no mind to, and I was lucky it didn't poke an eye! We both squinted our eyes, as I yelled, "No, I'm not seeing things!"

"Yeah, you are, newbie!"

"No, I'm not, 'Miss Powerful'!"

Trixie and I kept this going a couple more times. We even threw our rocks away in the same direction, without really thinking about it, and at around the same time. And, I'll admit it, and even Trixie will if you ask her, but the two of us were really just acting like little kids/foals at this point. We finally pushed Starlight too far, and she just couldn't take it anymore.

"All right you two, QUIET!!" Starlight shouted as hard as she could, with her neck even showing a few veins.

Yep, both Trixie and I both found ourselves facing one of the most famous faces of MLP: the legendary Starlight Glimmer "QUIET!!" face, and for more than just that reason, I felt a powerful wave of nostalgia. Just like how a certain Princess of Friendship did when she was on the receiving end of it, both Trixie and I just shut the buck up! We backed up slightly from each other, turned to face Starlight, and just stared at her, surprised, and wasn't gonna say a word till that Unicorn said we could talk. Trixie also had her ears drooped down.

With Trixie and I both quiet, Starlight slightly calmed down, so at least the veins in her neck disappeared. She focused her glare at Trixie, faced her directly, pointed a hoof, and yelled, "I know you like to mess with Eric, Trixie, but this is too much! You even said this was going to be a 'friendly' magic duel, remember?! This has been anything but 'friendly'!"

Starlight turned slightly to face and glare at me, while pointing the hoof she had at Trixie at me. "And as for you, Eric, I've never seen you act like this before, not even with Trixie! What is your problem today?!"

I thought about what Starie asked -- well, yelled -- and it was then I truly realized why I was this bad, and it was kinda embarrassing. But, I had to say it if, for anything else, to get my big sister to calm down!

"Well...it was because, when Trixie was messing with me so much, I felt a wave of nostalgia, Starie."

Starlight's glare turned into a confused look. She put her hoof down, and asked in a normal tone but confused voice, "What do you mean by that, Buggie? What 'nostalgia'?"

I took a few steps away, looked up, and smiled. "What I was just doing with Trixie, was what I did a lot in my old world with Erica."

Trixie rubbed her head, while asking, "Huh? Who's this 'Erica' Eric?"

Starlight put a hoof to her cheek. "Wait, 'Erica'...that's one of your sisters' names back in your old world, right? You mean her?"

Still looking up, I confessed, "Yep, you got it, Starie. Growing up, we would always try to one-up or out-do each other, every chance we got, and we especially went at it when we competed in something. Ha, the two of us just loved doing it, and I guess I just missed it."

"Really? Did you two mess with each other like how we did during our magic duel?"

I put my head back down, still smiling, and turned to face Trixie. "Oh, you have no idea, Trixie. We were actually pretty tame compared to how Erica and I sometimes got." I turned to Starlight with the same grin. "And believe it or not, Starie, when you yelled at us to be quiet just now, you made the nostalgia even stronger. Jenny, the eldest sister in my old world, would yell at us to be quiet too, when we either went too far, or just got on her nerves too much, just like how Trixie and I did to you."

Starlight frowned, and her ears drooped down. "Really? You've never told me about this. In fact...have you been feeling homesick, and If so, why didn't you tell me or Twilight? You know you can come to talk to us about anything, right?"

I tilted my head up a bit for a few seconds, and put a finger on my chin as I did to think. "Well...it wasn't that I was hiding it from you or Twilight. To be honest, I don't think that even I knew it was starting to happen, and maybe that was the real reason I felt so restless at the castle. And, I even kinda forgot that you and Trixie aren't Erica and Jenny, or otherwise I'd kept myself from going too far. So, Starie, I'm sorry." I tilted my head back down.

Hearing that made Starlight feel bad. Her ears drooped down, and she frowned, "Wow, Buggie...I had no idea. If I knew, I'd just stayed back and let you two go at it, if it really makes you happy and feel more at home. I'm so sorry, Buggie." Starlight slightly turned her face so she could look at both my and Trixie's faces. "And I'm also sorry for yelling at the two of you."

Trixie waved her hoof at Starlight. "Eh, it's okay, Starlight, and I'm sorry too. Like I said before: It'll take a lot more than harsh words to lose me."

I lifted my head. "Same here, Starie, and it wasn't fair to make you be annoyed so much anyway...though, I do have a question for Trixie." I turned to face Trixie. "Trixie, first, I want to say I'm sorry to you too. I know I told you and Starlight why I got carried away, but I still went too far. But what about you? I learned pretty much nothing about your past from the cartoon, so did you have a reason too?"

Trixie turned her head and eyes up, then back down. "Hmm...Not really, Eric. At least, I don't have the kind of reason you do. You see, while she's more fun than Twilight, Starlight can still get annoyed when I mess with her, so I try not to do it too much. But not only do you not mind it, you like it, and will even do it back, and I enjoyed it. It felt good to not having to worry...too much, about annoying someone for once. The old me wouldn't had cared, but the new me do. And, I guess I got a little carried away too, so I'm sorry."

Starlight, Trixie, and I joined in a group hug, and when we broke it up, we noticed something really odd, and all three of us turned in its direction.

Starlight gasped and pointed. "Wait, what happened to that rock?"

"It somehow got about two times bigger! Is that mine, or your rock, Trixie? I didn't pay attention when I threw it."

"Uh...I'm not sure, Eric, I wasn't paying attention either. How did that happen anyway?"

"I...think that somehow, one of you did the growth spell in such a way, that it delayed your rock from growing to that size. But, even I'm not sure how that could happen. I might ask Twilight later if she knows."

Since no one paid attention to the rocks when Trixie and I threw them when we were still fighting, there's no way for us to tell for sure who's rock it was.

"Well, how can we tell who won our magic duel, Starie? Maybe we could have a sixth round?"

Trixie smiled, and had a very surprising suggestion. "You know what, Eric? How about we just call it a draw, and I can take a tie."

See? I told you Trixie's really nice when she's not messing with me.

"Well, I don't really like ties, but it's still better than a loss, so I'll be fine with it, Trixie. But we do have to make it official. So, judge...?"

Trixie and I turned to Starlight, who put on a embarrassed grin. "Oh, right, I forgot I'm still the judge of your duel. In fact, I have a better idea than a tie: since I can't tell who lost, this magic duel has two winners. They are: Eric Reed, and Trixie Lulamoon!"

Ha, figures Starie might think of ending it like that. And she's the judge, so what she says for this magic duel, goes. And since Trixie and I both "won", we both did a victory dance: she Moonwalked, and I tried to wave my arms and dance...and it sucked! So I just copied Trixie's Moonwalk, and we ended up doing it together for a bit.

After we got done, Trixie turned a bit away from me and Starlight, and said, "Well, that magic duel was really fun, even with the yelling. But I should go and prepare for my next act, so I'll see you two later."

"All right, see you later, Trixie!"

"Yeah, see ya, 'Miss Powerful'! Oh, and you said you wanted to 'test' my magic skills with that magic duel, so did I pass my 'Great and Powerful test'?"

Trixie put a hoof on her cheek, and rolled her eyes up. "Hmm, I'll give you a 'D-', newbie, and that's a passing grade, so you pass!"

"A 'D-' huh? Figures, but I'll take it."

We waved our hand/hoofs, and Trixie went off to prepare for her next act. With all the excitement, we all forgot, even Trixie herself, that the whole reason Trixie even stopped by the castle earlier, was to ask Starlight for help on her act! Oops. Starie and I were about to go back into the castle, since I thought I trained in magic enough for one day, when Twilight came back, while flying. She had her head tilted down a bit, confused about something.

"What's wrong, Twi? Is that Friendship Mission not work out or something?"

Twilight lifted her head, and looked at me. "That's the thing, Buggie: I couldn't find it."

Both me and Starlight yelled, "What?!"

"Yeah, I don't get it either! I went to where the Map sent me, but no matter how hard I looked, I just couldn't find any ponies that had a friendship problem, or any kind of problem."

"Wow, really Twi?"

"Has that ever happened before, Twilight?"

Twilight shook her head. "No, it never has, Starlight. I was even coming back to see if I maybe went to the wrong place. But"-- Twilight pointed a hoof at her Cutie Mark --"My Cutie Mark stopped glowing about five minutes ago, so I don't know what's going on."

"Five minutes ago, Twi? That's odd--"

Both Starlight and I gasped, then faced and pointed a finger/hoof at each other. Twilight said her Cutie Mark stopped glowing five minutes ago, and that was about the same time when Starlight, Trixie, and I did our group hug. Could that had meant...?

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Buggie?"

"I think so, Starie, if you think we were a part of Twilight's 'Friendship Mission'?"

That puzzled Twilight more than ever, and she asked, "What did you mean by you two being it? I don't remember seeing you guys fighting before I left."

Starlight and I put our hand/hoof down, and I told Twilight, "If we're right, yep! But not because Starie and I were fighting or something. We were about to go in the castle, so we can tell you about it in there. Is that ok, Twi?"

Rubbing her head with a hoof, Twilight answered, "Well, I have no idea what you two are talking about. But sure, we can go in the castle, and you can tell me whatever you think my Friendship Mission was." Twilight noticed my "Unicorn" horn, and pointed at it. "And why do you have that 'Unicorn' horn again, Buggie?"

"I'll explain that too, Twi."

And the three of us went into the castle, and we told Twilight all about it.

And in case you're confused along with Twi here, here's what Starlight and I thought happened, and what we told Twilight. She also thought we were right.

I was starting to feel homesick without knowing it, but my magic duel with Trixie helped cure it. But, if Twilight would've stayed at the castle, she'd either wanted to watch it, or had probably noticed me and Trixie fighting on her own, and stopped it too soon, because of the fighting. If she did, it wouldn't had done on long enough to let me truly realize what I was really feeling. I love my Equestrian big sister Twilight Sparkle so much, but that Alicorn can be a real wet blanket on my fun sometimes! Just like Jenny.

So, to keep the occasional Princess of No Fun from being able to ruin things, The Friendship Map "sent" Twilight somewhere else, and even timed it to give Starlight enough time to teach me the spells I'd use in the magic duel with Trixie. With Twilight gone, Trixie and I could have the full duel, since Starlight didn't stop us too soon. Thus, when we did our group hug, the "Friendship Problem" was solved, and that was why Twilight's Cutie Mark stopped glowing. I also thought it was odd that it was only Twilight that got called, since she's never been sent alone before, even though Starlight got sent alone once...

After the magic duel, Trixie and I became closer friends than before. Though, we still weren't close enough for her to start feeling like another sister to me. But she could eventually; that Unicorn and I sure pick on each other like we're brother and sister; and if she does, I'll have a Great and Powerful sister.

Or a fifth Great and Powerful sister.
