Remember the Dawn
Chapter 1
It was a beautiful sunset in Canterlot, one I wouldn't forget. A new intern was coming to the agency and hopefully it wasn't one from a noble family. They don't last long in the force.
"Are you Mrs. Vinyl?" said The Blue Alicorn. "Yes, I am. Also I'll be your instructor for the length of the course."
This mare was a princess, heck even the one who raised the moon before the mass reformation. She must've left some things out on the-no in fact, she even put all her prison sentences on her record.. She was definitely looking forward to getting a second chance, which are hard to get these days. There’s one question I gotta ask her though.
“Now for your first question of the day, why would you work for a government agency and for the government that overthrew you?” I obviously struck an emotional chord for her. Then she looked down to me with past hurt and frustration in her eyes but she softened and showed a more professional resolve. “I wasn’t in the best of mental states before the reformation. My mind was filled with corruption and greed.I’ll never truly forgive myself..." She didn't finish but I got the gist.
"Hey now, no reason to beat yourself up over something that happened 40 years ago." Her face dimmed even further, which made me feel bad.
So I did an unreasonable thing. "You did WHAT!" My Boss was obviously not happy with stepping over her authority, but hey at least she's my wife.
Luna stood beside me slightly tense after Octavia basically gave her the royal Canterlot voice. Which surprised me since Luna is known for it. Octavia hoofed her face in annoyance. Luna regained her composure and cleared her throat. Before she spoke she placed down a few papers. "Oh no,you don't get to use papers from the republic to breeze through this interview. You shall be using your words to convince me if you are worthy of this position" Octavia looked at the papers with disgust as she examined them further. "Besides,I need to verify these so come into my office." Luna reluctantly followed like a foal who had gotten into trouble for stealing something. She then followed Octavia who was storming towards her office. They both entered into the office and immediately Octavia got on her knees. "Please help me with Vinyl and I'll approve you for this job!" Luna cocked her eyebrow but released it as she realized this was her chance. "what do you need me to do?" Octavia breathed a deep sigh to collect herself. "I think Vinyl is being controlled via her mind to make her do heinous things,and she has almost put us out of business by scaring clients away!" Luna hugged Octavia tightly and then released. "Thank you for giving me a second chance,I'll find out what's afflicting her and save my job!" Octavia motioned Luna to be quiet "Don't even think about your plan,you must be think innocent and act innocent." Vinyl walked in with her coat still on "Act innocent for what?"
Octavia motioned for me to stay in the room. Now I’m being forced to wait for the outcome, the thing is, I hate waiting. Vinyl closed the door and found a seat in the hallway until Octavia cooled down. The interview Luna had been waiting for had finally begun after two seconds. That's a new record in my book.
Luna was thinking over the past 40 years, what she had almost become and the decision on joining the magic unit of a widely known private eye company. Including, what Tia had said about it, her question that lead her here in the first place had consisted of three words: Are. You. Sure.
Those words occupied her mind more than anything else. She felt sure about this, but was she really? After several minutes, basically 1 set later. Octavia as well as my possible partner came out.
“Vinyl, it's imperative that you talk about the case with your new partner.” Octavia continued business after wrapping up with the introduction with Luna. I tried to hide my emotion from my muzzle but that clearly wasn't happening. I had mixed emotions about this: Happy that I was being partnered with best former princess! Distraught when I thought about how this will affect my public image, and of course how I am going to-.
“I know you have many concerns about this. As do I, however, I think we should set them aside and be honest about who we are.”[
There was a few moments of silence in the main room.
“So how did canterlot state prison treat you? If that's not a question that offends you too terribly.” Vinyl said as she got out her last pack from ponyville. Well what's left of it anyway.
Luna didn't flinch at the question despite the hell she faced in those 40 horrible years. Yes, despite her half of her magic was stripped from her so she couldn't influence the moon to “rise” over Equestria. Also, despite falling into the vat of acid because of Celestia’s careless operation of the polisher machine. Despite being used as a pawn for science just to survive only to be turned into a cybernetic mess. She was fine, totally and completely a mess. Best foot forward as they say nowadays. Luna cleared her throat as she realized she was daydreaming.
“The prison worked it’s purpose as it should for anypony else that was guilty of a crime It made me lose something that I never realized I was taking from my subjects during my days of my second corruption. Those things were freedom and the lifestyles I could have with it. As well as my optimism for the future or the hopes to be something more. That's why I am here to help make sure the innocent don't lose such things ever again.” Vinyl heard this type of cracking from somepony’s voice before and it was her who had done it.
It was when she had her cutie mark overlapped with another when President Faust came along and “liberated” equestria. She and Octavia didn’t mind since it was way better than starving because your talents were considered illegal by your two favorite tyrants.
Vinyl shook her head and got back to her “instructor mindset” and she motioned Luna to follow her.
"Where are we going, Mrs. Vinyl?” ,Luna inquired. Vinyl smirked and started trotting at full speed. “You’ll see soon enough just catch up!” Vinyl zoomed out the door leaving a breeze behind her. Luna started trotting to keep up with Vinyl and so does her thoughts. “She isn’t giving me an introduction to my first case like my boss said she would.” Luna thought to herself as she paced herself to go faster to get closer to Vinyl.
“Maybe we should have it while walking and then it can go much smoother! Vinyl quickly turned left towards the dirty part of town,and the part of town that she knows all too well. A part of town she used during her rule to suppress many a revolution.As she followed the trail of light of Vinyl’s horn that turned blue to green for a short moment,Luna saw a group of changelings as she followed the last turn “Vinyl” made into an alleyway. It was at that moment Luna knew that she was in for a very interesting evening…..
