Meaningless in Their Dreams

Over time, ponies have drifted apart. This is their silent lament as they regret the choices they've made and wish to have each other back. Oh, and Gummy knows everything and reflects on it all. (Written in verse, except for Gummy's bit.)

It's finally happened: Twilight and her friends have achieved their dreams! The CMC have their cutie marks, and Spike is in a position of true power! Princess Luna has found herself a place where she truly feels at home, and Zecora is left in companionable solitude! So why have their worlds fallen apart?

This is the story of many different ponies and one dragon who have drifted away from one another. They've tried to keep their friendship alive, but all things must come to an end. Each of them will speak their sorrow, and the All-Powerful God-Alligator Gummy will give his words on the subject.

Written entirely in verse, except for Gummy's words. "Other" tag is for the Princesses. Tell me if I should add any more tags!

One Apart From the Others

Come and hear the story told
Of six friends, who brave and bold
Left perusing their own dreams
And left their hearts behind, it seems.

Then listen to the two who fought
Chaos, and then chaos brought.
Fate cast one away, apart
From her home and from her heart.

After these come three sad foals,
Those who strived to find their roles.
Once they found their purpose, though,
Meaning from their lives did go.

Next, the one who constantly
Stayed at home in Everfree.
When her friends all disappeared,
She was left alone, uncheered.

Finally, the last to fall:
One who stayed true through it all.
Sick of being second-best,
He went on a power-quest.

All these beings speak one verse,
Each lamenting their shared curse.
It matters little why or how,
This is what they suffer now.

"Ink on parchment, scroll and seal
Nothing else to me is real
Letters of the bonds we had
Before the world went crazy mad."

"Silk and velvet, running stitch
Dresses made without a hitch
They look like the friends I'd made
Mem'ry is a two-edged blade."

"In the fame I'd dreamed to reach
Clouds are kicked across the breach
Though the sky connects us all,
Even sky will someday fall."

"Hoeing, planting, working land
Why did we choose to disband?
Apple cider we once shared
From the time when we still cared."

"Fluffy bunnies, kittens, mice
Free from danger, friendly, nice.
Cling to whispers of the past
In their fur, so it will last."

"Parties, crazy, fun galore
Everypony wanted more!
Now they're gone, out of my life
Laughter only fighting strife."

"On the ground, I'd missed the sky--
On the moon I used to fly.
So I fought a losing fight
Banished to rejoin my night.'

"Sisters now, as we were then
How could she betray again?
Forced to cast her far away
Is there nothing that can stay?"

"Songs have taken me afar
Songs of hope, of who we are.
Now my flank's no longer bare
There's no purpose resting there."

"Building houses made of rocks
I've lost all my building blocks.
Friends and home and family
Were the things that set me free."

"Chained no longer to the ground
Acrobatic leaping bound.
Now I know my scooter tricks
Left a hole I cannot fix."

"On the freedom-forest floor,
Friends come visit me no more.
Speaking in my constant rhyme
Can't bring back a happy time."

"Ever faithful follower
Always I had stayed with her.
Though I have the power now,
I wish I could go back somehow."

Gummy's Silence

Gummy, omnipresent croc
Kept their secrets with a lock.
He heard all the words they said
Knowing each inside was dead.

Now it is his turn to say
Thoughts on what's transpired this day.
Though he's silent, in his mind
You may find deep words in kind.

What is the point of life? What is possibly worth the pain and suffering it undoubtedly, unfailingly brings? Is it friendship? Can friendship possibly be worth the agony it brings when it ends? Friendship always ends, after all. Even if a friend miraculously stays faithful their whole lives, one pony is going to die first and leave the other alone. What is a purpose, a cutie mark, worth if it takes away everything precious to the life before the mark appeared? Perhaps it is better to have no cutie mark and no purpose, so that the rest of the life remains. But what was it worth anyway? We find the ancient toothless gator in the same place as always; trying to hold together the crazy pink one who's almost fallen off the cliff of insanity. Giving her advice, she who no longer has friends to turn to, friends who feel equally abandoned in turn. Where does each pony go when they have nothing else to hold on to? Do they simply disappear into the void of nonbeing? Do they cling to their pain to have something that defines them? Or do they turn to the pet gator who they have never heard a word of advice from? The pink one could have heard me. She could have listened if she wanted to, and not gone off into a new life. And yet... she didn't. Now their worlds have shattered while the rest of the world looks on, unknowing. Is this the purpose? To continue to bring joy and meaning to others, even when you have lost all yourself? Even though, inside, they are all shattered, too? Everyone feels they are alone, and through this, isolates themselves from other lonely souls. How long will it take to find one another again? Is that the purpose of life, to live and be broken until, in finding a way to end your brokenness, you end your life? What a miserable existence...

The End

So you see, it all will end,
Sister, teacher, love, or friend.
Someday, we will all pass on
It won't matter what is gone.

Someday, even sun will die.
Everyone must say goodbye.
In the end, it's all for naught
As all will someday be forgot.

Shadows, light and misery
Death within each family tree.
People come, and people go
Some leave quickly, others slow.

Every change brings death, of kind
Death of friendship, death of mind.
Even sorrow dies, one day
When our joy moves in to stay.

Words like tears fall on the page
In the spotlight, center stage.
Everyone hides their true face
Searching for a better place.

Sorrow is a part of life,
Everyone will know some strife.
But if you keep an open heart,
Happiness will not depart.

Grow a garden of your past
Keep it safe, and it will last.
Plant new seeds when they arrive,
And your wholeness will survive.
