Chrysalis hates the idea.

Hearth's Warming Eve? The Changeling Queen would sooner curl up under some heavy covers, than indulge in a celebration for a bunch of ponies that nopony even properly remembers. Wasn't she already putting up with enough ponies on a day-to-day basis? It was an all together terrible idea, dragging her out of the castle to...mingle with Celestia's overly sweet and soft subjects.

Of course, there was no proper way to refuse Celestia...

...the prices, one pays when you're in a relationship with the Princess of the Sun.

Chapter One: I'm Cold

View Online

“Have I mentioned how much I hate the cold?”

Celestia had to duck her head slightly, to conceal her momentary annoyance with Chrysalis' stubbornly poor mood. Turning to the Changeling Queen at her side with a calm smile “You may have mentioned it once or twice, Chryssie.”

“And yet you insist upon the two of us traipsing about Canterlot for hours on end. While it's snowing, no less. On the side of a mountain. Tell me, what is the point of having 'weather-ponies' if we have to put up with this?” Chrysalis asked testily.

“It's Winter, Chrysalis. I can't very well go about changing that.” Celestia pointed out, with slightly less patience than before.

“And yet, you absolutely could change it with little more than a word to the right ponies.” Chrysalis pointed out.

“It's more complicated that that, and you know it, Chrysalis. So, you'll have to forgive me if I don't take your suggestion to upend the seasons for some momentary comfort.” Celestia replied.

Chrysalis rolled her eyes at this, though didn't argue against the alicorn's point; while her changelings were not themselves the sort to be overly concerned with the weather, she did in fact know that it was a complex subject. Not having to waste their efforts with such things was another benefit to building down, rather than up, as these ponies were so insistent upon doing. Underground, and with proper building techniques, the air would stay warm and dry through the winters, and reasonably cool during the blistering summers of the Badlands. Sure you may have lacked for natural lighting, but that seemed a reasonable trade-off, in her mind. To say nothing of the comforting familiarity of her former home...

And once again, she found herself missing the, now abandoned, tunnels of her hive. A home that was nearly as old as Equestria itself, had been left behind by her subjects after having migrated into the lands of the Crystal Empire. There her changelings could freely live off of the power projected outward by the Crystal Heart, rather than causing any harm by feeding upon ponies. And it was all under the watchful eyes of Princess Mi Amore Cadenza.

Chrysalis' mood only soured further.

Chrysalis couldn't blame Celestia for her current circumstances, knowing all the events that had lead up to the present. And, if she was being honest with herself, she couldn't even truly blame Cadenza for not allowing her within the borders of the Crystal Empire, after everything that had transpired...

“Regardless, there is no reason for us to be out here right now. This insipid little play of yours doesn't even begin for several hours, so I fail to see point of us being down here.” Chrysalis just really felt the need to complain a bit right now. And she knew that at least Celestia wouldn't take it personally, if she wanted to vent some of her frustrations.

“Well, first of all, I rather resent your description of the play as 'insipid'. It's a Hearth's Warming Eve tradition and it presents a story that is dear to many of my little ponies' hearts.” Princess Celestia explained patiently.

“I know the story better than any of your little ponies, and you know it.” Chrysalis countered.

“And secondly, I was hoping that this could prove itself as a fine opportunity for us to show that you are not the terrifying figure that many of my subjects still believe you to be.” Celestia continued, not paying any mind to Chrysalis' remark.

Princess Celestia did however note the way the Changeling Queen rolled her eyes.

“Chrysalis...did you not claim that you wished to make-up for your past mistakes?” Celestia quietly asked.

Chrysalis had to pause for a moment, before scowling and glancing off to the side “...I may have phrased it differently...but, yes.”

“...I believe that putting to rest some of the fears that you have inspired in my subjects would be an excellent step in that pursuit, don't you?” Celestia asked imploringly.

The Changeling Queen visibly struggled with this question for several moments. Settling for scowling off to the side, as she forced her thoughts into order, Chrysalis loosed a heavy sigh “...It's still cold.”

Celestia gave as kindly a smile as she could at this, knowing Chrysalis well enough to recognize when the Changeling Queen was admitting that Celestia was, in fact, right. Celestia lightly bumped Chrysalis' side with her own, to gain back the changeling's attention “Well, if it's so cold, I suppose it's good that I'm here with you. Come now, you've been cooped up for far too long in the castle.”

“And who's fault is that?” Chrysalis halfheartedly sniped.

While Celestia's smile did not fade, she did pointedly raise an eyebrow at the question.

“...Yes, I know it's my fault. Shut-up.” Chrysalis admitted, even as she tried to avoid sounding as if she was starting to enjoy their exchange.

Celestia chuckled at this, before shaking her head in amusement “See now? You are capable of having a bit of fun. When you care to, at least.”

“Perhaps...but let's not pretend that this play is going to be anything other than tedious.” Chrysalis replied.

Princess Celestia had to quiet her own chuckles at that remark “Yes, well...misery is best shared with those you most care about.”

“I knew it. Behind all this talk of allaying fears and getting me out of the castle, you just don't want to be stuck attending this thing on your own...How uncharacteristically selfish of you.” Chrysalis teased, earning another quiet chuckle from the Princess of the Sun.

And it surely would be terribly boring for the Princess of the Sun to sit through this same play, yet again. Having managed to stoically attend such traditional functions year after year, Chrysalis had to wonder how the whole ordeal hadn't driven Celestia mad by this point. Though the Changeling Queen knew well, that Celestia would never disappoint her little ponies by appearing as anything less than enthralled with each and every performance.

Perhaps, bearing with some boredom was a small price to pay for the sake of pleasing her adoring subjects.

Chrysalis supposed that she could relate to that...

The Changeling Queen gave an internal sigh before casting her gaze about their surroundings. The ponies moving to and fro, smiling and laughing with one another, as they went about decorating the Canterlot street didn't seem intent on bothering the royal duo. Wreathes, ribbons, and decorative lamps were being set up all along the street, even as the snow continued to gently drift down. No doubt, the weather-ponies involved were following very specific guidelines for what constituted just the right amount of snow to both set the mood for the holiday and leave Chrysalis feeling groggy and miserable. Meanwhile, those not busying themselves with such things, were busy at their stalls selling foods, toys, and even more decorations for Hearth's Warming Eve.

It all seemed terribly wasteful to Chrysalis.

Yes, her subjects held their own occasional festivals and celebrations, but they never went to such lengths over such things. Changelings may well have a similar appreciation and respect for the great accomplishments of past changelings, but this went well beyond that. They, sheltered and carefully hidden from the outside world for so long, couldn't afford to invest this much effort into...frivolity.

Or, at least, that used to be the case.

Where her subjects were now, perhaps they could afford to waste their efforts on such pointless things. Living in the Crystal Empire, under the nourishing power of the Crystal Heart, they might be able to work to not just survive, but improve their lives. Maybe in a few decades, she'd end up finding out about some curious celebration her own subjects were now holding. Chrysalis didn't get ponies. While she had a great deal of knowledge on them, mostly regarding the art of blending in amongst and manipulating them. She didn't get these holidays, but understood that they made ponies happy. Would it be so wrong if her changelings could do the same? To find times for enjoying one another and bringing about happiness...

In the Crystal Empire, hundreds of miles away, under the watchful eye of a pony that had every right to loath Chrysalis...

The Changeling Queen spared a glance to those ponies that they passed along the streets, noting the way their cheer became forced as they took note of herself. Celestia's presence, and perhaps the discreet presence of the two Royal guards following behind, seemed to be keeping them from becoming too fearful. Still, the ponies whose faces lit-up at the sight of their Princess, became hesitant and anxious moments later when they caught sight of Chrysalis, the nefarious villain that had invaded their peaceful home, not so long ago.

After a few moments of consideration for the alicorn at her side, Chrysalis loosed a heavy sigh.

This earned a curious glance from Celestia, who then tilted her head towards the Changeling Queen “Is something wrong, Chrysalis?”

“No, everything's fine.” Chrysalis replied.

“...You're sure that you're...fine?” Celestia asked doubtfully.

“That is what I said.” Chrysalis pointed out.

Princess Celestia furrowed her brow at this, before coming to a stop in the middle of the street. Leaning closer in to the Changeling Queen, with concern lacing her voice now “I'm afraid I don't believe you, Chryssie. There's something on your mind, isn't there?”

“And why can't I still be fine, even if something is?” Chrysalis countered, with a touch annoyance.

Celestia didn't say anything, but instead continued to send her a worried look, that silently asked for the Changeling Queen to reveal what was bothering her.

“...I already told you that nothing is wrong.” Chrysalis reiterated, turning her gaze to the side now.

“We don't have to do this, if you truly don't wish to, Chrysalis. We can return to the castle, if you'd like?” Celestia quietly offered.

“Do you think I can't endure this little outing?” Chrysalis asked in agitation.

“I'd rather you not spend so much effort trying to endure everything, Chrysalis.” Celestia countered, showing a bit of agitation, in turn. Taking a calming breath, before she continued “Please...I would rather that you speak frankly with me. And to trust that, even if I cannot help, that I care enough to want to know. Can we do that?”

“...I am more than capable of putting up with this little holiday.” Chrysalis reaffirmed.

Celestia frowned at Chrysalis' stubborn response “I see...is that all that-”

The Changeling suddenly loosed a low snarl of aggravation, before casting her sight down the street. Her gaze coming to a stop upon a rather extravagantly decorated store front, with a small group of ponies hoofing out small candies to the foals that passed by, Chrysalis abruptly began marching over.

“Chrysalis? Hold a moment!” Reaching a hoof out that failed to catch the Changeling Queen, Princess Celestia couldn't help but briefly glance to the two royal guards escorting her. After a moment, they both shrugged, equally unsure of how they could help this situation.

Neither of them had any training as relationship counselors.

A moment later, the Princess of the Sun shook her head before quickly following after her irate changeling.

It was rather easy, as the ponies along the street were quickly clearing a path for Chrysalis, anxiously shying away from her and seeking safety with those around them, even as the Changeling Queen utterly ignored them. Chrysalis frowned mightily as she approached the ponies that had been distributing candies, as these ponies noticed her purposeful approach. As the crowd cleared from the front of the store, most of the treat-distributing ponies likewise retreated, leaving a single young Earth Pony stallion holding a bowl of candy anxiously standing in front of her.

Briefly staring down upon the terrified stallion, taking note of his rather cozy looking scarf and the ridiculous looking hat he was wearing, Chrysalis turned her gaze back the way she came.

Princess Celestia quickly approached, which seemed to be something of a relief to the many ponies surrounding Chrysalis now, sending the Changeling Queen a look of consternation and confusion.

“You.”

Before Celestia could speak up however, or otherwise take control of the situation, Chrysalis suddenly jabbed her hole-filled hoof in the direction of the stallion, causing him to jump in surprise. And, incidentally, launching a goodly portion of the contents of his candy bowl into the air.

Chrysalis remained impassive as she was pelted with several pieces of candy, restraining the urge to scowl down upon the already terrified pony.

For the stallion's part, he managed to meet Chrysalis own gaze, before attempting to swallow down a bit of his own anxiety. With an audible gulp “Y-y-yes?”

“What is your name?” Chrysalis asked.

The stallion blinked at this, not having expected the question, before glancing to Chrysalis' side to Princess Celestia. While still uncertain herself, as to what Chrysalis was going on about, she took a moment to send a reassuring smile towards him. Looking back towards the Changeling Queen, he took a moment to clear his throat “H-Hardy Hopscotch...Ma'am.”

“I see...and are you going to offer your Princess of the Sun a piece of candy, or not, Hardy Hopscotch?” Chrysalis asked in an imperious tone.

“...Uhm.” The stallion again glanced between the Changeling Queen and Princess Celestia, his fear for the terrifying Changeling in front of him giving way to confusion.

“Do you, or do you not adore Princes Celestia?” Chrysalis demanded.

“...Yes?” He agreed.

“And you want her to be sure that she shares in your...Hearth's Warming Eve cheer, correct?” Chrysalis continued.

Hardy nodded, not taking his eyes off of Chrysalis. Princess Celestia was doing the same, alternating between watching the changeling with curiosity and maintaining her poise, in the hopes of keeping her subjects calm.

“Yet, you have not seen fit to offer her a piece of candy?”

“I-...well, no.”

“Do you think she does not deserve a piece of your candy?”

“O-of course not!”

“Does she have to save the world, again, before she can have a piece of candy?”

“No.”

“Are you afraid of her?”

“I-...no.”

“...”

“...”

“...”

“Then offer her a damned piece of candy!” Chrysalis suddenly snapped, causing nearly everypony watching this strange scene to jump with surprise.

Princess Celestia, after getting over her own surprise, took in the many confused stares of her subjects, before sidling a bit closer to Chrysalis.

“...Chrysalis-” Princess Celestia began.

“I-...would you like a piece of candy for Hearth's Warming Eve...Y-your highness?” Hardy Hopscotch suddenly chimed in, while holding out a piece of candy towards Princess Celestia.

It was Celestia's turn to blink in confusion, as she stared down upon the colorfully wrapped treat resting upon the stallion's hoof. She turned towards Chrysalis, as if she wished to say something, before she seemed to think better of it. After spending another moment considering the Changeling at her side, she let a slow smile start to form.

Focusing back upon the young stallion in front of them, Celestia gave a nod and a kindly smile to Hardy Hopscotch, before retrieving the candy with her magic “I would love one. Thank you.”

“Good. Now-” Chrysalis began.

“W-...would you like one, ma'am?” Hardy asked, while holding out another piece of candy towards the Royal Changeling.

“...No. Thank you.” Chrysalis replied after a moment. Seeming to shake off the question, she turned her gaze towards the heavily decorated storefront “Now...as I was saying, were you the one that saw to the decorations on this building...Hardy Hopscotch?”

“Well, not entirely...” He answered relatively quickly, depositing the candy back into the candy bowl, before glancing towards the rest of the ponies that had been giving out candy. They all seemed to be keeping their distance still.

Chrysalis followed Hardy's gaze, before letting it rest upon this small group of ponies. Narrowing her eyes slightly at this sight “You three! Stop your cowering and come here.”

Hardy's fellow employees each jumped with a start, before they slowly edged over, ducking their heads a bit as Chrysalis kept her harsh gaze upon them.

“Now...tell us about these decorations and the efforts you put into them.” Chrysalis ordered.

While Hardy seemed to have relaxed a bit, his comrades were all blatantly staring up at the Changeling Queen, with varying degrees of worry and uncertainty.

Now, if you don't mind.” Chrysalis snapped.

A few minutes later...

“Well...that was certainly different.” Princess Celestia noted, enjoying her small candy, as they cantered away from a very bemused crowd of ponies.

“Mm.” Chrysalis quietly grunted.

Narrowing her eyes a bit at this non-remark, Celestia drew to halt, while placing a hoof across Chrysalis' own withers to get her to do the same.

Chrysalis sighed, before turning towards Celestia “What is it now?”

Celestia sent her a look of compassion and worry, not so very different from the one she had given Chrysalis during their argument. Admittedly this one was less strained and much warmer than earlier.

After a few moments of silence, Chrysalis turned to the side to huff in annoyance, before facing Celestia with a grumpy expression “My ears are freezing, and this cold is making me tired and hungry. I'm hundreds of miles away from my own subjects. And your subjects have managed to turn a celebration of the accomplishments of some of the few genuinely interesting ponies of their past into a saccharine bore...”

Celestia nodded, still sporting a small smile “...And?”

“And...while I rather doubt that I will enjoy this day...I have no intention of letting you not enjoy this day with your subjects.” Chrysalis eventually admitted.

Chrysalis noted that, for just a few moments, Celestia smile seemed just a bit less practiced. A bit less carefully perfected for the sake of others. And just a bit more natural...

“I see...and, you're quite certain there is nothing I could do to make this day just a little bit enjoyable for you, Chryssie?” Celestia asked, as she bumped Chrysalis' side with her own.

“Not a thing.” Chrysalis agreed, as she eyed the Princess at her side.

“Well, that's a shame...I was hoping we could swing by a little cafe I know of...” Celestia replied.

“And what is there that would be of interest to myself in this little cafe?” Chrysalis asked, with a raised, skeptical eyebrow.

“Only what is reputedly the best cups of hot cocoa that can be found in all of Canterlot...that's all.” Celestia said.

“...That is not even the least bit subtle of you.”

“I'm not trying to be subtle.”

“So you admit you're not even trying now?”

“They also have fudge...And I was thinking, that if it might have made things a bit more enjoyable for you, we could have indulged for a little while...”

“Oh...”

“But since you're so sure that you won't be able to enjoy yourself, Chryssie, I suppose we might as well-”

“Fine. That might make this day a bit more enjoyable...Are you happy now?”

“...Very much so, Chrysalis.”

Chapter Two: This is Stupid

The last few hours had turned out to be...tolerable for Chrysalis.

Celestia had followed through upon her promise of hot cocoa and other chocolate-y goods, and then some. Celestia's 'little cafe' had also been a welcome respite from the cold weather for the changeling, and that could have been enough to improve her mood a bit on it's own. That the owner of this little cafe had managed to keep his holiday cheer in-check and the decorations modest, had been a surprising relief as well. The reasonably professional manner in which his employees had conducted themselves around the Changeling Queen, had been rather pleasant, as well. While Chrysalis was rarely inclined to give any mind to the reactions of ponies at her presence, that they had not spent half of their time gawking or cowering had been a mark in their favor.

The best part was still the chocolate.

So much so, that Celestia had not been able to convince Chrysalis to leave, until after purchasing several more cups of cocoa to carry with them into the cold.

Rather amazingly, none of the ponies actually working in the cafe remarked upon or seem to pay overly much mind to the Changeling Queen's obsessive fondness for their chocolate-based offerings.

Quite a few of the other customers, however, had to deal with having their perceptions of the dreaded Queen of the Changelings being radically undermined.

Much to Princess Celestia's quiet amusement.

Rumors were going to be flying about Canterlot over the next few days.

Not that Chrysalis cared, as she sipped down the contents of the last of the disposable cups that Celestia had purchased for her. As far as she was concerned, any pony that could not understand her appreciation for chocolate was beyond reasoning with. And, amazingly enough, she had managed to stretch out her beverages throughout the remaining few hours until they were meant to attend the Hearth's Warming Eve play.

The two guardponies accompanying them had, rather embarrassingly, gone through each of their cups of hot cocoa within the first half-hour.

Still, hot cocoa could do only so much.

As Chrysalis had surmised, Celestia's desire to mingle with and interact with her ponies, had lead to a terribly dull few hours.

Predictably, Chrysalis stood upon the sidelines and, thankfully, Celestia let her, only extending the occasional unspoken offer to join in with the odd introduction or question. More than once she had considered becoming more involved in the socializing with the ponies they ran into, if only to watch said ponies squirm. But, for the most part she quietly watched, and little more, offering only perfunctory responses to Celestia's questions.

...There were a couple of instances where the Changeling Queen's patience ran out. Once or twice some pony would wear out their welcome, by running at the mouth and otherwise dragging out the whole affair even longer. Which, quite naturally, lead to Celestia quietly chastising her for subtly driving them off.

As far as she was concerned, if the ponies in question were unwilling to weather the pointed glares Chrysalis sent their way, then clearly whatever they wished to say to the alicorn wasn't that important.

Telling her as much, had led to the Princess swiping one of Chrysalis' reserve cups of hot cocoa.

On the other hoof, that...unfortunate run-in with a pair of particularly snooty, supposedly aristocratic, unicorns had not earned Chrysalis any such punishment. As it happened, most ponies outside of Canterlot Castle itself, were rather unaware of how...friendly the two monarchs really were with one another, leading to this couple to believe that it would only be appropriate to send a few subtle insults in the Changeling Queen's direction. While these had not seemed like the most perceptive of individuals to begin with, their staggering inability to notice Celestia's growing displeasure had been impressive in it's own right.

Though, now that she thought about it, most ponies did not seem to be especially gifted when it came to reading Celestia's moods.

'Maybe it's just me?'

In any event, Chrysalis was quite certain that this pair nearly wet themselves, when Celestia quietly excused herself, leaving them alone in her company.

That had been an amusing couple of minutes.

Though Chrysalis had never been very fond of such mixed messages.

She sends a few quiet glares towards one group of annoying ponies, and she loses her cocoa. But she reduces another pair of annoying ponies to tears with her mere presence, and she receives nary a word of scolding from Celestia.

...How was this fair?

She supposed it didn't really matter. The time for this very traditional Hearth's Warming Eve play was swiftly approaching, and Chrysalis had managed to extract a firm promise from Celestia that after sitting though it, that would be end of their day. She had put up with worse experiences for much longer than this, and at least in this instance, she got the occasional few minutes alone with Celestia.

Like now, for instance.

“Chryssie. I'm telling you...I think you have had quite enough chocolate for today.” Celestia told the changeling at her side in a firm tone.

“No. I had enough chocolate for today. But then you had to have a little fit over my not putting up with that mare that couldn't stop talking.” Chrysalis countered.

Celestia had to roll her eyes at this, before turning back towards Chrysalis “Honestly, I'm surprised you haven't made yourself sick already.”

“You said that I could have as much as I wanted. You cannot blame me for accepting your offer.” Chrysalis primly countered.

“It's not healthy, Chrysalis.” Celestia insisted.

“Perhaps not for your soft and...squishy little ponies. However, you'll note that I am none of those things. Neither soft and squishy or a pony.” Chrysalis replied, without concern.

Celestia pursed her lips at this, mildly perturbed, before a thought visibly occurred to her. The Princess smiled to herself “Well...not yet, at least.”

“What?”

“Oh, it's nothing. You're right Chrysalis, I did promise to let you have as much as you wanted.” Celestia serenely replied.

Chrysalis narrowed her eyes at this “...And?”

“And, you should absolutely feel free to eat what you wish, Chrysalis, without my attempting to dictate your eating habits for you.” Celestia continued.

“...And?” Chrysalis again asked, certain that there was something more the Princess wished to say.

“And, I don't mind at all if my favorite changeling in the whole world ends up becoming a bit...soft.” Celestia said.

“Soft?!” Chrysalis barked, coming to a sudden stop as she did so.

“And squishy.” Celestia added, before using a hoof give a playful poke to the Changeling Queen's side.

Backing away as she pushed Celestia's hoof away, it took her a moment to process what had just been suggested “Wha- I am NOT becoming squishy!!”

This started to draw some stares from passing ponies, as their quiet conversation devolved into a very loud discussion about personal squishiness.

“Now, now, Chryssie, there's no need for shouting. I already told you, I'm not going to judge.” Celestia teased.

Chrysalis glanced down at her own body, as if to prove that she wasn't getting...squishy. A moment later, she shook those thoughts from her head before sending a glare the Princess' way “As if you are one to talk! I am well-aware of your little Royal Dessert budget!”

Princess Celestia furrowed her brow at this “I-...the Dessert budget isn't that large...”

“Oh, really? And just how many full-time bakers do you keep on staff?” Chrysalis pressed with a smirk, finally sensing that she had gotten the upper-hoof.

“Just enough for day-to-day baking needs!” Celestia defended.

“I see...” Chrysalis replied with a chuckle.

Celestia pursed her lips at this, in mild annoyance “You do know that we've had to expand the Dessert budget by about 15% since your arrival...”

Chrysalis merely turned up her nose at this remark.

Celestia took note of the growing crowd of ponies watching this strange scene, before loosing a sigh “Well...as I said, you are perfectly free to go on your little chocolate binge, if you so choose.”

“You think I'm going on a binge?” Chrysalis asked.

“In any event, we really should be on our way.” Celestia noted, as she began to canter forward once more. Celestia was easily making progress down the street, and had only just noted another group of ponies rounding a corner, when Chrysalis darted in front of her.

“Oh my!” A mare squeaked at the sudden sight of the Changeling Queen, though Chrysalis did not pay any mind.

“I am not going on a binge.”

Celestia blinked at this, surprised by the forcefulness of Chrysalis' words.

“And there is nothing wrong with me, that would lead me to going on a binge...I told you I'm fine.” Chrysalis huffed out with unexpected anger.

After several moments of silence, Celestia nodded her head “Of course, Chryssie.”

“What?” Chrysalis asked.

“I don't mind you your eating habits, and I certainly don't think there is anything wrong with you. I was merely teasing a bit...I didn't mean to upset you.” Celestia also wasn't exactly sure why this was so upsetting for the Changeling Queen, though she kept that to herself for now. She knew it could be terribly difficult dragging anything out of Chrysalis, especially if it was something that bothered her.

“...You didn't upset me.” Chrysalis replied, glancing off to the side.

“If you say so, Chrysalis.” Celestia conceded with a small smile.

“Excuse me, your Highness?” A stallion's voice called from the side.

Both Chrysalis and Celestia turned towards the voice and it's owner, a rather healthy, and familiar, stallion with a copper-colored coat and a dark gray mane and tail. Clinging to his side anxiously, was a unicorn mare sporting a lilac coat, and a mane and tail of pale blue and bright-yellow arranged in eye-catching style. And peeking out from just behind the mare's leg was a young colt, with a dull-red coat and a hot-pink mane and tail each sporting blue streaks.

It was Celestia that recognized the stallion first “Lieutenant Stalwart, this is a pleasant surprise.”

It took Chrysalis a moment to recognize him, not used to seeing the Earth pony stallion out of his armor, though his half-lidded gaze gave him away.

It was Stalwart Gaze. Not the most annoying pony Chrysalis had ever met.

Most of the staff and guardsponies around Canterlot Castle itself had seemed to acclimate rather quickly to her presence, trusting in their Princess so much that they scarcely batted an eye at the Changeling Queen anymore. Stalwart Gaze had never batted an eye at all, maintaining his composure and professionalism from the start. Even some of her changelings could learn something about discipline from this stallion.

“A pleasure and an honor, as you say, your Highness.” Stalwart Gaze returned, with a nod of his head towards Princess Celestia. Chrysalis was mildly surprised when he turned and nodded towards herself “And to you, Queen Chrysalis.”

Celestia accepted the gesture with a graceful nod in return “And I do hope you are enjoying your holiday.”

“Yes, your Highness...Though, if you are through with your discussion with Queen Chrysalis, my family needs to make use of this street.” Stalwart Gaze replied, leaving the mare at his side looking aghast. A moment later the mare slapped his side, earning a placid “Ow” from the stallion.

“Stalwart, you cannot possibly be that impolite to Princess Celestia!” The mare scolded, having forgotten her earlier anxiety. It returned with a vengeance a moment later, when she suddenly slapped her hoof over her own mouth. Turning towards Princess Celestia now “I'm terribly sorry for that outburst, your Highness. I certainly did not mean to-”

“It's quite alright, I did not take offense.” Celestia assured through her amusement. Chrysalis was quite sure that any amusement she was showing was for the sake of putting the mare at ease, rather than genuine pleasure.

“But, I-” The mare began.

“And Stalwart was quite right to remind me of where I was standing. I should have been more considerate.” Celestia continued on, not letting the mare gain anymore momentum.

The mare in-turn fell quiet, letting Stalwart again take the lead “You are quite welcome, your Highness. And I should apologize for intruding upon your discussion.”

“Not at all. If I had wished it to be private, I should have taken proper measures. There is no fault upon you.” Celestia reassured. She soon took in the ponies at the stallion's side “And, I take it this is your family, Lieutenant? Off to see the Hearth's Warming Eve play, as well?”

“Yes, your Highness. This is-” The stallion began

“Oh, don't mind us, your Highness. I'm quite sure we've stolen enough of your attention, your Highness. Come now, honey. We don't want to bother-” The mare cut-in, still evidently anxious about this meeting.

“I don't see how it's a bother.” Stalwart noted, holding his ground.

“It really isn't.” Princess Celestia agreed with a small smile.

“And you have been pestering me for months to introduce you to Princess Celestia, dear.” Stalwart added.

“Pestering you? I don't pester you. Since when have I ever pestered you?” The mare demanded of her husband, with a pursed lip and, again, forgetting her nervousness at being in the presence of royalty.

“...Hm” Stalwart quietly hummed to himself, as he noticed the perturbed look on his wife's face. After several moments of silence on the stallion's part, he suddenly turned towards Princess Celestia “Your Highness, I believe I've mentioned my wife to you before, Jazzy Trends?”

Princess Celestia loosed a quiet chuckle at this “I believe you have, and it's a delight to finally meet you, Jazzy.”

“Oh...oh, the delight is all mine, your Highness. I mean, honor- the honor is all mine...you didn't say honor...It's lovely to finally know you, as well...Not that I didn't know who you were before, I-” Jazzy started babbling.

“It's quite alright. I understand what you meant...and who might this young colt be?” Celestia assured, before tilting her head to the side to take in the colt still leaning out from behind Jazzy. He had spent most of this time unapologetically staring up at the Changeling Queen, with Chrysalis quietly returning the favor.

“Oh, this would be our son, your Highness. You can come on out, Hard Note.” Jazzy began to coax.

Hard Note glanced towards his mother, before turning his gaze back towards the Changeling Queen, reminding Jazzy of her presence.

“Oh...uhm, yes.” Jazzy quietly remarked, earning a raised eyebrow from Chrysalis.

Stalwart Gaze glanced between those gathered, before shrugging “There's no need to pressure him, dear. After the events of Princess Cadence's wedding, it's understandable if he's a little bit afraid-”

“I'm not scared of her!” The colt suddenly proclaimed, stepping out from behind his mother as he did so.

This earned a worried glance from Jazzy towards Chrysalis, though the Changeling Queen didn't seem to react. Celestia just let out a quiet laugh.

“I'm not scared...I was just curious.” Hard Note reiterated, in a calmer manner.

Chrysalis tilted her head at this, before leaning forward a bit “You aren't scared of me?”

“Nope.” Hard Note affirmed, shaking his head and his vibrantly colored mane as he did so.

“...Good. I wasn't trying to be scary anyway.” Chrysalis remarked.

“As I was saying...Princess Celestia, Queen Chrysalis, this is my son, Hard Note...as I'm sure you've gathered.” Stalwart calmly finished his introductions.

“And a pleasure it is to meet you as well, Hard Note. Are you excited to be seeing the Hearth's Warming Eve play with your parents?” Princess Celestia asked.

The colt glanced towards the Princess now, thinking about the question for a moment “Uhm...not really.”

“Hard Note!” Jazzy chastised.

“What? It's going to be super boring.” The colt defended.

“The colt is not wrong.” Chrysalis remarked.

“Well, all the same, I do hope you find a way to enjoy yourself, Hard Note.” Celestia finished, with a smile for the young colt.

“Uhm, Thanks?...Probably not going to though.” Hard Note replied after a moment, earning another look of annoyance from his mother and a smirk from the Changeling Queen.

Celestia gave a another amused chuckle, before turning towards Stalwart Gaze once more “I take it you're making your way to the theater now, Stalwart?”

“Yes, your Highness. Jazzy wanted to make sure we didn't have to struggle to get good seats...She'll need a good view, for the sake of her column.” The stallion replied.

“That's perfect timing, as we were just beginning to make our way there. Would you mind terribly if we accompanied you and your family?” Celestia asked.

“It would be an honor, Princess Celestia.” Stalwart quickly replied, before his wife could respond.

“Excellent. I'd love the opportunity to get to know your family a bit better. And I'm sure Chrysalis would, as well?” Celestia replied, turning towards the Changeling as she did so.

Chrysalis shrugged.

“Perfect. And perhaps Jazzy here can tell me of this column she is writing along the way?” Celestia offered before Jazzy could attempt to politely back out.

“I-...Oh, well, it's nothing so amazing. When you get right down to it, what I-” Jazzy began, showing a rather sudden change in mood.

“Jazzy's a music critic, and writes for the Canterlot Herald regularly.” Stalwart cut-in, summing up what would have likely been a long spiel for his wife.

“...Honey?” Jazzy requested.

“Yes, dear?” Stalwart replied.

The mare abruptly smacked his chest again.

“...Ow.”

A few minutes later...

“Are you really the Queen of the Changelings?”

Chrysalis looked down, to the curious colt that had been trailing to the back of the group to stare at her. Just ahead Celestia was leading their party, keeping the colt's mother too wrapped up in conversation to worry. Meanwhile, Stalwart Gaze kept to the middle of their little procession, evidently keeping an eye upon everyone. Naturally, the two guardsponies were at the back of the group, remaining unobtrusive.

Eventually noting that the colt still seemed to be waiting for an answer from her, Chrysalis let out a quiet sigh “...Do I not look the part of the Changeling Queen to you?”

She didn't care for most ponies, but foals generally weren't too offensive. They reminded her of the nymphs of her swarm. And for reasons that were utterly beyond Chrysalis, the young changelings of her hive all seemed to adore her.

And it helped that, as a rule, changelings weren't big on harming children. Their fairly strict control over their numbers tended to leave them feeling a bit over-protective of their own young. And since most changelings were perfectly capable of empathy, most were rather reluctant to actually hurt a child, whatever the race.

Most changelings found the idea downright offensive.

Hard Note briefly considered Chrysalis again, before pushing his messy pink-and-blue mane from his eyes “Where are all of your changelings?”

...It was a very offensive idea.

“Far away from here.” Chrysalis replied, a bit tersely. She had to remind herself that it wasn't the colt's fault that this particular issue had been weighing upon her.

“Why's that?” Hard Note asked, scarcely missing a beat.

“Where they are right now is good for them, but I'm not allowed to go there.” Chrysalis answered, while keeping her gaze forward.

“Oh...don't you miss them?”

Chrysalis had to close her eyes for a moment at this, before responding “Yes.”

“Huh...that sucks.” The colt remarked.

Chrysalis spared another glance for the colt “...It does.”

“...Did they send you any presents?” Hard Note asked.

“What?” This time she found herself looking towards the colt's father questioningly. The stallion shrugged, evidently having no more insight into his son's curiosity for Chrysalis than she herself did. Furrowing her brow at this, she briefly considered the colt and his question “No...no, they wouldn't think to send me anything.”

“Why not? Don't they like you?”

“They do...but gift-giving works differently among my changelings.”

Hard Note tilted his head at this, hoping for an explanation.

“...We usually give gifts as a way to...make-up for something we have done wrong. And they have not wronged me.” Chrysalis elaborated.

“So...do you, like, not celebrate Hearth's Warming Day, at all?” The colt asked after a moment.

“No. We sometimes tell the stories of what happened, but it is not something we spend effort celebrating.” Chrysalis explained.

“Stories?...You mean like this play?” The colt asked, in a way that suggested he didn't think any more highly of the play than Chrysalis did.

“No. These stories are actually interesting. Not like this boiled down, feel-good romp that everypony insists upon calling a play.” Chrysalis replied.

The colt thought about this for a few seconds “If you don't celebrate it, why do you tell the stories then?”

“Because they are interesting. That and the stories are as much a part of our history as yours.” Chrysalis easily answered.

“...Really? I don't remember hearing about any changelings whenever anypony talked about it before.” Hard Note pointed out.

Chrysalis gave the colt a pointed look at that remark.

“Oh...I guess, nopony would have been able to tell if there were any changelings around, huh?” Hard Note surmised after a bit of thought.

“Ideally.” Chrysalis agreed.

“But, why were you guys even there?” Hard Note asked.

“I wasn't. It was a few centuries before my time.” Chrysalis pointed out.

“Ok...but, why were they there?” Hard Note pressed.

“...If my changelings have to feed upon ponies to survive, what do you think would have happened if ponies everywhere happened to die off?”

“...Oh.”

A little while later...

“Ugh...this is so boring.”

“Hard Note! Behave yourself.” Jazzy quietly chastised from her seat beside Princess Celestia.

“Awww, but-” Hard Note began to protest.

“No buts, mister...Now, just try to enjoy the show.”

Chrysalis wasn't quite sure how the colt was supposed to 'enjoy the show' if he found it that boring. And it's not as if the child was wrong. It really was turning out to be as boring as she had feared it would be.

Even so, the colt's pouting was not helping the situation.

They had managed to make it to the theater that was putting on the production in good time, which somehow qualified as fortunate, according to Celestia. Really though, arriving on time only meant more time being wasted on this show, and little else. As the Princess, Celestia had been afforded a private balcony to watch from, so they didn't exactly need to jockey for comfortable seats. And, in fact, said balcony had been so spacious that Celestia had insisted on sharing that space with Stalwart Gaze's family.

Leading to their current seating arrangements.

Chrysalis was fairly certain that Celestia was up to something.

That was the only explanation for the Princess' transparent, to Chrysalis, efforts to seat the Changeling Queen alongside the endlessly curious colt. On Hard Note's other side sat his father, serving as an effective buffer between the colt and his anxious mother. Then Jazzy Trends, sitting at Celestia's side, where the Princess could easily distract her from her worries over Chrysalis' proximity to her son.

Chrysalis glanced towards Hard Note once more, as she put things together “Hm...cute.”

“What?” The colt asked.

“Not you.” Chrysalis quickly clarified, before swiftly returning to her considerations.

'Twilight must have let slip what she saw at the hive...'

Chrysalis had thought that she had made it quite clear to the young princess, and her little friends, that they were not to breathe a word of...story-time to anypony, including Celestia.

Especially Celestia.

And it was more than some simple story-time, despite what that...Pinkie Pie might think. It was an oral tradition. A Queen was supposed to tell those stories, to the young nymphs of the swarm. And was it so wrong that she enjoyed telling those stories for her little changelings?

She knew that if they mentioned that to Celestia, her princess would get the wrong idea.

The only question now was what to do about it...

Hard Note gave a loud yawn, breaking Chrysalis from her thoughts.

“Oh, sweetheart, are you alright?” Jazzy called over to her son.

“I'm fine, mom.” The colt replied.

"...Well, here. Take this blanket and bundle up. This theater's rather drafty.” Soon Jazzy was pulling out a blanket from her saddlebags, and began using her magic to float it over towards Hard Note.

“Mom! I'm not cold.” Hard Note argued, as she began to wrap the blanket around him.

“You say that now, but you'll catch a cold if you're not careful.”

“But-” Hard Note began again, before noticing that his father was watching him. The colt soon loosed a puff of air, before settling down again “...-fine.”

'Ugh...I should have brought my own blanket.'

Chrysalis wasn't all that used to the cold in the first place, and it naturally took more of her energy to stay active when it was chilly. Which ultimately meant she would end up taking more of Celestia's energy later on...

'One issue at a time...'

She still needed to deal with this little plot of Celestia's.

'I could always just ignore the foal...'

Celestia certainly couldn't make her talk to the kid...though it was really just a matter of time until the colt decided he had another question he wanted to pester her with. And if she ignored him, Celestia would use that as an excuse to pry, claiming that something was bothering her...

'Alternatively, I could take her bait...'

Then, at the end of the day, she could call out Celestia on her little ploy.

Chrysalis could tell her that she had seen right through Celestia's little game, and put her on the defensive for being so manipulative. She might even get her to apologize for it...or Celie might just claim innocence. Then she would suggest that Chrysalis was merely being paranoid and over-thinking the issue, turning the whole thing around on the Changeling Queen. She'd probably play the 'I was just hoping you'd have a good time' card and try to get Chrysalis to admit to having enjoyed herself...

That couldn't happen.

'Hmmm...I could...perfect.'

Chrysalis calmly shifted about for a moment, before standing up.

“That is fascinating and-...Chrysalis, is something wrong?” Celestia interrupted her conversation with Jazzy, upon noticing.

“Hm? Not at all. I just thought to stretch my legs for a bit, get some fresh air.” Chrysalis answered with practiced ease.

It was the perfect foil for this scheme. She had made no secret of being less than excited about this little outing, so it would hardly be a stretch for her to become restless. A quick little walk about the lobby, then when she came back she'd make a point of sitting by Celestia. She wouldn't be able to raise any objection to this new seating arrangement, without giving away her own scheme and Chrysalis would have a large buffer between herself and the young colt for the rest of the evening. And the Changeling Queen could really use a break from this play.

'Ugh...they're completely misrepresenting Princess Platinum.'

“Oh...well, I suppose that's fine, Chrysalis. Just be back soon.” Celestia replied after a moment.

It was the perfect counter move...

“Can I go too?” Hard Note requested.

...Or not.

“What?” Chrysalis blurted out.

“Hard Note, the play isn't even half-way done.” His mother pointed out.

“I know, but it's just so boring. It's completely the same as last year. And my legs are falling asleep.” The colt argued.

I-...well, you can try standing up for that, I think.” Jazzy offered, sending a furtive glance towards Chrysalis. The unicorn mare visibly swallowed down some anxiety before continuing “And, I rather think that Ms. Chrysalis would care for some time-”

“I could use a breath of fresh air, as well. I can keep an eye on Hard Note.” Stalwart Gaze interrupted.

Chrysalis had to resist the urge to send a glare towards the stallion.

“I-...well, I suppose...maybe I should come with you.” Jazzy replied, before beginning to get her hooves under her.

“But, what about your column?” Celestia reminded.

“Oh, right...” Jazzy hesitated.

“Everything will be fine, dear. Just enjoy the show.” Stalwart Gaze reassured.

“Well...alright then. Just be careful.” His mother finally relented.

“Awesome!” Hard Note declared, before quickly wriggling out of his blanket and heading towards the door.

“Don't forget your blanket!” Jazzy quickly called over, halting the colt in his tracks. A moment later the blanket floated over to land on his back, courtesy of his mother's magic.

Chrysalis had to stare for a moment, as she noted just how quickly her plan had backfired.

“Queen Chrysalis.” Stalwart Gaze gained her attention, as he politely held back the exit's curtain for her.

'...damn.'

“So, how many changelings were there really?”

Chrysalis sighed.

While Stalwart Gaze had indeed seemed intent on enjoying a quick walk, his son had wasted no time in coming to her with more questions, as predicted.

She briefly considered ignoring him, or brushing him off, but...she really didn't have anything better to do. And answering a few questions would probably do more to stimulate her mind than that play.

Chrysalis sighed again.

“More than you would think...” Chrysalis finally replied.

“Uhm...how many is that?” Hard Note asked.

“The entire swarm.”

“What, really?!”

Chrysalis frowned at that, having always disliked it when others made her repeat herself “Yes...really. When we became aware of their decision to flee their homelands, we went with them. We actually worked to encourage the idea, where we could.”

“Really?” The colt asked again.

“...Yes. Unlike some ponies, the swarm had no intention of freezing to death over a bit land or wealth.”

“You guys were really that scared though?”

“We...didn't know anything more about the Windigos than any ponies, only that the encroaching winter wasn't natural. So...yes, many changelings were worried at the time.” Chrysalis explained.

“But, how'd they know something was wrong?” Hard Note pressed.

“I'm not sure. According to my mother, the cold just felt like...a malevolence that was spreading over the lands...I suppose changelings are simply sensitive to such things.” Chrysalis elaborated.

“Cool. How'd you guys help out though?” The colt declared.

“As I understand it...mostly we slipped amongst the populace, as we always have, and tried to convince more ponies that something bad was coming. We weren't going to reveal ourselves unless the situation became truly dire. Many changelings just helped as ponies did, doing work and only occasionally nudging the right ponies to do something.” Chrysalis explained, before trying to shake a bit of the cold from her body. She didn't have the benefit of a coat or being able to shiver, as ponies did.

“Huh...well, that doesn't sound very exciting.” Hard Note admitted with some disappointment.

“You recall Smart Cookie?” Chrysalis replied.

"Yeah?"

"Changeling." Chrysalis said in a succinct manner.

"...No way. Really?"

"Indeed."

"But...how?"

"Well, the swarm obviously had a vested interest in getting changelings close to those ponies that were willing to take decisive action. For all of Chancellor Puddinghead's...quirks, she was one of the few willing to act." Chrysalis explained.

"Huh...that makes sense, I guess. But how'd you guys get that close to her?" Hard Note asked.

"As I said, Puddinghead was rather quirky...she evidently picked a pony at random from a crowd and declared them her top advisor. It just happened to be our good fortune that it was one of our changelings." Chrysalis elaborated, leaving out the part where it might not have entirely been simple good fortune. There had been quite a bit of speculation before, that Puddinghead might have been aware of what Smart Cookie really was. And that it was Smart Cookie that had let the Chancellor know...

"Wow...were any other famous ponies actually changelings?" Hard Note asked.

"Not really, no. Smart Cookie was the exception, rather than the rule."

"Really? That's still pretty cool though. Way cooler than all that other stuff." Hard Note declared.

"Most of the stories surrounding Equestria's founders are more interesting that you've been told, I'm sure." Chrysalis pointed out.

"I don't know...the play kinda made most of them seem kinda lame." Hard Note replied.

"They aren't telling the right stories. Though, I suppose they wouldn't tell you about how Princess Platinum had to threaten her father with a civil war, before being allowed to go on her expedition."

“...Really?” The colt asked disbelievingly.

“Stop asking me if I 'really' mean something. If I was going to lie to you, asking me to repeat myself isn't going to help.” Chrysalis snapped, earning a surprised and somewhat upset response from the colt.

“S-sorry...” Hard Note muttered, in stark contrast to the colt's usual bold manner.

Chrysalis had to resist the urge of loosing a curse at the pathetic look she had inspired in the foal. The colt had been using the phrase 'really' almost like a punctuation mark and it had been driving her crazy. She ended up turning her gaze to the side, only to note Stalwart Gaze watching her with one eyebrow raised towards her.

After several seconds of silence, Chrysalis ended up stomping a hoof before turning back towards Hard Note. Taking in a calming breath, she cleared her throat to get the foal's attention “...Don't worry about it.”

“...But-” Hard Note began after a moment.

“I don't care for this cold. My temper is a bit short right now. So, don't concern yourself with what I said a moment ago.” Chrysalis interrupted.

“...You're cold?” Hard Note asked after a moment.

“I also don't care for having to repeat myself.” Chrysalis replied, closing her eyes to suppress her mild aggravation with the foal.

She opened them a few moments later, as she felt something being tossed over her withers, just ahead of her wings.

Looking back she found a weathered blanket draped over her.

Chrysalis found her gaze wandering to the colt at her side.

“I wasn't really cold anyway.” Hard Note explained with a grin.

“I see.” Chrysalis said, before turning her eyes towards Stalwart Gaze for some sort of explanation, only to find a look of mild surprise on the stallion's face, as well.

Chrysalis took a moment to adjust the blanket, before focusing back on Hard Note “Thanks.”

“No problem.” He replied easily.

“...As I was saying, Princess Platinum lead a rather interesting life around that time.” Chrysalis began.

“Re-...interesting how?” Hard Note correcting himself before he used the word 'really' again. Running his hoof through his mane “I mean, she didn't seem all that interesting to me.”

“I suppose she wouldn't seem that interesting...I haven't seen a version of this play yet, where they even touch upon her skills as a duelist.” Chrysalis hinted, visibly piquing the foal's interest.

“Wait, Princess Platinum did duels? Like with swords and stuff? Or did she use, like...magic?” Hard Note asked.

“Yes.”

“...What?”

“She used both. And I suspect the play won't even mention the parts with the dragon.”

Chapter Three: Not a Word...

View Online

Celestia could feel herself sliding into consciousness, her eyes fluttering ever so slightly, as she carefully shifted under her warm covers. Not unlike clockwork, the princess was waking in the predawn hours, drawn awake by the approach of morning. It wouldn't be long until Celestia would need to see to raising the Sun for Hearth's Warming Day...

...after carefully extricating herself out from under the sleeping changeling that had draped herself over the princess' own body in the night.

Celestia honestly wasn't sure on whether or not Chrysalis meant it, when she said that it was the only way she could get to sleep, or if her changeling was simply looking for a face-saving excuse. There was evidence for either, as Chrysalis did spend a lot of time tossing-and-turning in bed, when she wasn't making herself cozy with Celestia. Apparently, Celestia's bed was too soft for the changeling's tastes. On the other hoof, it wouldn't be out of character for the changeling to be too embarrassed to ask to cuddle.

Whatever the case, it was endearing.

Celestia had to smile at the thought. For all of her griping, her changeling had been a delightful change of pace, for this year's holiday festivities. And Chrysalis had managed to comport herself rather well, despite her objections to their day out.

The princess had held no delusions that her changeling was ever going to be the sort to gush affection or gleefully socialize with anyone, much less ponies. Well, unless she was impersonating such a pony for some purpose; if it came down to it, Celestia didn't doubt that Chrysalis' pride in her skills could overcome her aversion to that kind of thing. Regardless, Chrysalis had managed to make a...non-negative impression upon at least a few ponies, perhaps convincing a few of Celestia's subjects that they didn't need to look upon the Changeling Queen with terror.

Granted, Chrysalis had slipped into melancholy and introspection more than once, garnering some worry from the princess. But, still Celestia liked to think that the day had held a positive impact upon the depressed changeling.

That was another thing Chrysalis probably wouldn't admit to anytime soon; that she had found some parts of their day enjoyable.

Not that her changeling had any chance of convincing Celestia that she hadn't enjoyed herself a little bit. Chrysalis had gotten very into the telling of her stories for the young Hard Note, and had failed to notice the crowd she had drawn, as the Hearth's Warming Eve play was wrapping up. That is until she caught sight of Celestia in her audience, while she was giving an impressively dramatic and emotional impression of Princess Platinum.

Celestia never mentioned it, but she rather enjoyed it when Chrysalis started acting all 'dramatic'. It was a shame that the changeling only ever indulged that side of herself when in the midst of an 'evil' plan.

And, apparently, when in the middle of telling a good story.

She could still recall the look on Chrysalis' face. Disbelieving shock, quickly sliding into embarrassment, before settling upon faux haughty confidence.

Adorable.

Especially when Chrysalis started trying to play things casually, calmly demanding to know whether or not it was time to leave, even as Hard Note kept pestering her to continue the story.

The Changeling Queen had been ready to stalk out of the theater, in the hopes of avoiding further embarrassment, when Celestia asked about the blanket draped over her back. Chrysalis had actually blushed, when she had been reminded of that, before quickly tossing the blanket towards Hard Note.

That was going to be wonderful fodder for teasing the changeling later.

Celestia turned her head ever so slightly towards Chrysalis, her horn glowing lightly.

She wished she could say that the sleeping changeling looked peaceful, that the changeling's tension and her hard expressions had fallen away in the embrace of sleep, but she couldn't. If anything, Chrysalis only looked more troubled in her sleep, when she could no longer maintain her facade of unwavering strength.

Celestia couldn't keep herself from lightly nosing Chrysalis' cheek, causing her to stir slightly, before turning away from the light of Celestia's horn. A moment later, the changeling loosed a sighing trill.

The princess smiled lightly at that.

As far as she could tell, that sound was a result of something that was not unlike the pony affliction that lead to snoring. It was probably a result of the differences in the changeling respiratory system or perhaps related to their ability to alter their voices.

It was an oddly pretty sound, though Chrysalis had always become terribly defensive whenever she had mentioned as much. At the time, Celestia had been only too ready to tease her about how cute it was that she was embarrassed over such a little thing. Now, after Chrysalis had revealed her feelings for her, while also forcing Celestia to realize her own shared feelings, the princess understood the reasons for that reaction.

Telling Chrysalis that she found her cute, even in jest, couldn't have helped when the changeling had been trying hard to suppress her own romantic thoughts.

A great many things made so much more sense, now that Celestia realized the depths between the two of them. Feelings that she had too easily attributed to simple friendship...

The princess considered her changeling once more.

Perhaps she could speak with Luna, about Chrysalis' fitful sleeping. She had asked her sister to look into the issue before, but had heard nothing of it since. Though, that wouldn't be terribly odd, as Luna was always fairly stringent about keeping the contents of an individual's dreams confidential. The two didn't seem especially close, but seemed to tolerate and hold some respect for one another. Though, when together, the two seemed a bit too eager to team up in order to embarrass Celestia.

But, if her sister could help her understand the changeling...

Celestia set that thought to the side for now.

Dawn was nearly upon Equestria, and Luna had some fairly strong opinions on the issue of punctuality.

The alicorn slowly began lifting away her covers, ever conscious of the changeling sharing her bed. Honestly, for all that Chrysalis was indirect in showing her affections, she had wasted no time before moving into Celestia's bedroom. Even more contrary to Celestia's expectations, was how slowly their sex life had progressed; Chrysalis seeming surprisingly nervous during their first couple attempts at...intimacy.

Celestia soon began to slide a hoof from the bed towards her floor, her horn's glow momentarily brightening, as she began to use her magic to gently shift the changeling's body.

She paused when she felt the changeling's hole-filled legs tighten around her.

Surprised, Celestia let her eye drift towards the Chrysalis' face, only to note the that the changeling's eyes were still closed.

The princess furrowed her brow for a moment “Chrysalis? Are you still asleep?”

“...Yes.” Came the changeling's dry reply.

"...I didn't mean to wake you.” Celestia replied, briefly chagrined by Chrysalis' smart response.

“Then, why were you shining that light in my face?” Chrysalis irritably muttered.

Celestia quickly dimmed the glow of her magic “Sorry, I know yesterday was tiring for you...go back to sleep.”

“No.” Chrysalis tersely replied.

The princess had to blink at that, not having expected that response “Uhm...please, go back to sleep?”

The changeling only loosed a quiet growl in the back of her throat, earning Celestia's bewilderment “Did you...is everything alright?”

“Last night...I was thinking. About this holiday, Hearth's Warming.” Chrysalis slowly replied.

“What about it?” Celestia asked, curious now.

“It may not be...completely without merit.” Chrysalis slowly admitted, her face still partially buried into Celestia's side.

“Only partially without merit?” The princess lightly prodded.

“It is insipid. And wasteful. The singing was terrible...it's a bit of an embarrassment, in most ways.” Chrysalis began.

“...But?”

“The gifts...giving to others to make them...happy. If my changelings begin such a holiday for themselves, they should remember that part.” Chrysalis finished.

Celestia had to admit, that she didn't honestly know where Chrysalis was going with this.

“...I like the idea of them having so much, that they can just...give to one another for no better reason than wanting to. And...” Chrysalis trailed off.

“Go on...I'm listening, Chrysalis.” Celestia prompted.

“With that in mind, I wanted to do something for you that wasn't based on...making up for past mistakes.” Chrysalis eventually admitted.

“You...want to give me a Hearth's Warming gift?” Celestia asked.

“...If you have to call it that, yes.” Chrysalis replied with a bit of annoyance.

Celestia had to loose a small laugh at that, which she was sure earned her a glare from Chrysalis “You're asking for my permission?”

“Let's say, yes.” Came the changeling's short reply.

“Oh?...well, I would love that, Chrysalis. If that's what you really want to do?” Celestia replied, a bit thrown.

“...I don't want to hear any complaints about it later.” Chrysalis remarked, finally meeting Celestia's gaze with her own.

“I'm sure that I'll be pleased with whatever you give me, Chrysalis.” The princess replied with an encouraging smile.

“That's the idea.”

The alicorn loosed a quiet chuckle, before she began to shift towards the edge of the bed “Well then, I'll be looking forward-”

“Where are you going?” Chrysalis suddenly demanded, wrapping her hooves around Celestia once more.

“I-...it's almost dawn. I need to raise the Sun...and that usually involves getting out of bed, Chryssie.” Celestia replied, while turning to send a questioning look towards the changeling.

Celestia's had to stop when she felt a nibble at her ear, her eyes going wide even as she let out a very unimpressive squeak.

She had never really figured out how the changeling had known to zero in on that particular spot, but the princess had never been one to complain about it till now.

Not that she was complaining, but...

“C-Chryssie, what are you doing?” Celestia asked, while trying, and failing, to keep her voice even.

“Sleeping.” Chrysalis quietly remarked right into Celestia's ear.

A brief desire to give a retort to the changeling's remark faded, as the vibrations caused by the changeling's voice left the alicorn squirming “Chrysalis, you can't-”

“I believe I asked for your permission...which you gave.” Chrysalis wryly noted, even as Celestia realized that she wasn't going to be able to keep her composure if the changeling continued to stimulate her sensitive ear.

“It's not...” Celestia had to stop when Chrysalis briefly began nuzzling her neck, leaving her feeling as if she was melting.

“...W-we really need to...postpone this.” The princess finally managed to get out.

“Postpone this?” The changeling asked, in a surprisingly level tone.

Celestia let out a sigh, as Chrysalis took a break from her ministrations “Yes...under different circumstances...”

“It's fine.” Chrysalis replied.

“...Really?” The princess asked, surprised by the sturbborn Changeling Queen acquiescing so easily.

“Of course. I can nibble on your ears later.” Chrysalis remarked.

“Uhm...yes, well...I really should-” Celestia began to extricate herself from the bed again, only to be forced to stop when Chrysalis forced her to turn back around.

“Chrysalis, what are you-”

“Postponing.” That was the only answer the changeling gave. Or rather, it was the only verbal answer she gave.

The kiss, probably qualified as it's own kind of answer.

A really powerful and...thought-provoking answer. One that left Celestia struggling to recall whatever arguments she had against not just staying in bed...

Then the doors to her chambers slammed open.

“Sister! I demand to know what keeps you from our appointed rendezvous! 'Tis less than acceptable for one- Oh.”

...Oh, right. Luna. No doubt wondering why Celestia was running late, and not at all unwilling to burst into her private chambers demanding answers. Answers which took the form of a rather affectionate changeling.

“Dammit!”

A formerly affectionate, and now quite irate changeling.

“That would be why I suggested we...postpone...” Celestia remarked haltingly.

“Does your sister even know of the idea of knocking?! Or is that something she hasn't heard of since her return?” Chrysalis angrily demanded.

“Stay your rant, changeling! I refuse to be held accountable for the consequences of the constant carnal canoodling, that you wish to extract from my sister!” Luna countered, over her own momentary surprise.

Celestia let out a long-suffering sigh.

“Constant?! We have yet to even-” Chrysalis began.

“Can we spare Luna the details?” Celestia quietly requested.

“What details?! What can I possibly tell her at this point? What-...”The Changeling Queen suddenly trailed off as she finally turned her gaze towards Princess Luna “...-are you wearing?”

Celestia finally took a moment to rollover and take in the sight of her sister...

...in the absolutely adorable pajamas that Celestia had commissioned for the Moon Princess.

“Pardon?” Luna asked, a bit thrown by the question, before taking a moment to look down at herself. They were a softer blue than her own coat, patterned with frolicking animals in the form of starry constellations. Topping her head was a nightcap featuring a crescent moon upon it, with a stylized version of Luna laying back upon it like a hammock “Are you-...do you happen to be referring to my delightfully cozy sleepwear?”

“...Cozy?” Chrysalis asked after a moment.

“Indeed! 'Twas a fine gift from Celie, given to me sometime back...Were you the sort to ever rouse yourself at a reasonable hour, we suspect that we would not need to explain this to you now, Chrysalis.” Luna noted with a shake of her head, causing the fluffy little ball at the tip of the nightcap to start swinging.

“...What?” Chrysalis asked, still evidently having difficulty processing this.

“We have worn these to my morning rendezvous with Celie, ever since she gifted them to us.” Luna explained.

The changeling glanced towards Celestia, letting the Princess of the Sun confirm this with a nod “So...you wear these around the castle, as well?”

“Very much so, and in doing so I have earned the admiration of many of the ponies that serve us here. I have oft been met by nothing short of joyous smiles by some, and one particularly forthright member of my personal guard was moved to applause when she caught sight of me wearing these.” Luna proudly elaborated.

Chrysalis had no words.

“And as always, I'm very happy to know that you like them Luna...” Celestia noted.

Luna took a moment to shake her head, recalling why she had originally burst in to the room “Ah, yes...as I was saying, sister, you are most tardy for our usual appointment. At this rate, this day may very well be late if you cannot pull yourself away from-”

“I will be along presently, Luna.” Celestia cut-in, suspecting that her sister was about to bluntly reference her love-life once more. Her little sister could still be terribly frank at times, whatever the topic.

Luna gave a firm nod, again setting the fuzzy ball at the end of her nightcap dancing “See to it that you are, sister. I refuse to allow this day to be late in starting, even if that means I must drag you from the grasp of your changeling myself.”

With that, Luna gave a nod towards the bemused Chrysalis, before exiting Celestia's private chambers.

After several moments of silence, Chrysalis turned her gaze towards the princess lying beneath her “...Pajamas?”

“She is quite fond of them...and I think seeing her wearing them makes her seem a bit less...intimidating.” Celestia noted. A moment later, she noticed with some surprise the glare that Chrysalis was sending her way “Chryssie?”

“How many times have I told you how much I dislike the cold?” Chrysalis asked with some annoyance.

“...More than a few?” Celestia hesitantly replied.

“And never once did you think that I might want some manner of warm, cozy sleepwear?” The changeling demanded.

The Princess of the Sun couldn't help but blink in confusion at this question.

“Well?”

“I-...can't tell if you're being serious, Chrysalis.” Celestia eventually admitted.

“Why would I joke about this. Is my freezing on the side of this mountain amusing to you now?”

“I thought that was just an indirect way for you to admit you wanted to cuddle.” Celestia defended.

“It's a way for me to say that I'm cold. Cuddling is merely a temporary solution to a recurring problem that I am just now realizing you have long had the power to address...So, what do you have to say?” Chrysalis forcefully asked the bewildered princess.

“...Would you like a set of pajamas, Chrysalis?”

“Yes.”

“...Did you perhaps want them in a particular color?” Celestia followed up.

“That is of no importance to me.”

“Then it shouldn't take too long then, a week or so at the most...though I suppose they will have to be a late Hearth's Warming Day gift, if that's alright with you?” Celestia asked.

“Fine.” The changeling quickly replied.

“Well, then...I suppose I shouldn't keep Luna waiting...” Celestia remarked, before again trying to get out of bed.

Only to be stopped by Chrysalis.

“Uhm, Chryssie...we don't really have the time...”

“Is that so?”

“Luna does not jest about such things...if I linger too long, she may well-”

“I suppose that's incentive for you to cooperate then.”

A little while later...

Luna ended up following through on her earlier promise.

To Celestia's immense mortification, as the Moon Princess had not been deterred by Chrysalis' stubborn attempts to garner Celestia's continued...cooperation.

Being physically dragged out into the castle corridors, whilst tangled up in changeling limbs and her own bedding, had been a singularly unique experience for the Princess of the Sun. One that gave Celestia a great deal of incentive to maintain her policy of granting most of the staff and guardsponies of the castle Hearth's Warming Day off...

At least, the dawn had proceeded as scheduled, thanks to Luna's insistent approach to getting her older sister out of bed. And after putting her hoof down, and taking a well-deserved and much needed shower, along with Chrysalis, Celestia was now on her way to the dining hall. There she could take her breakfast and chat with Luna before her younger sibling turned in for some rest.

And as a change of pace, Chrysalis would be joining them.

Chrysalis had always been one to sleep late, whilst staying at Canterlot castle, even after the changeling had unilaterally decided to start sleeping in Celestia's chambers. Which, while not exactly unwelcome when they were starting their relationship, had been surprising, given how much the changeling seemed to prefer keeping their relationship between the two of them. In any event, Celestia had a fair idea of why her changeling was so given over to sleeping in, especially in the colder months...

But, if Chrysalis didn't want to touch on the subject, Celestia wouldn't press it.

It'd be far easier to simply enjoy the company of two of her favorite individuals this morning...While glossing over some of the more embarrassing events that had taken place earlier.

She was shaken from these thoughts by the minty-green pegasus stallion that trotted up to the table, his carefully maintained violet mane covered by a puffy chef's hat.

“And what might I provide our most esteemed Princesses this fine Hearth's Warming Day?” Her chef for the day, Banana Cream, enthusiastically asked. He wasn't one of her usual cooks, with the regular kitchen staff all attending their own families for the holiday. Rather the young pegasus stallion was a part of her nephew's own house servants. Celestia had been ready to refuse, and chide Blueblood for making the young stallion work through Hearth's Warming Day, when Banana Cream had started profusely thanking Celestia for the honor of being allowed to serve her.

Prince Blueblood had managed to get in a word to explain that, Banana Cream was a well-traveled sort, exploring different lands and their cuisine, and was used to not celebrating Equestrian holidays.

Once it had been made clear how eager he was to serve at Canterlot Castle, it had been hard to turn down the energetic chef.

Princess Celestia smiled politely for the chef, as he stood at her side by the dining table “I don't want to be too much trouble for you-”

“Oh, no! No trouble at all, your Highness-es. Whatever might pique your appetite I shall only be too happy to provide.” Banana Cream declared, before holding a hoof to his chest and continuing in a proud tone “Whether it be Equestrian delights, Griffonian high cuisine, or a surprisingly zesty Zebrican dish, you can rest assured that I shall provide a wonderful breakfast. I have traveled all these lands and more solely to-”

“I was honestly hoping for a bit of oatmeal, actually.” Celestia eventually cut-in, sensing that if she didn't, the stallion might go on for quite a while.

“...Oh. Of course, your Highness.” The stallion's wings visibly drooped at the simple request.

“Though, if you could add your own flare to it, I could hardly say no.” Princess Celestia followed up, with an encouraging smile for the chef.

“I-...Yes, right away, your Highness!” Banana Cream replied, his earlier enthusiasm restored. He quickly turned his attention towards Princess Luna “And what may I provide for our most honored Princess of the Night?”

“Something light, maybe with some fruit. I shall be taking my repose soon, and do not wish to have a heavy stomach.” Luna replied in a no-nonsense manner.

“Of course! And for our lovely guest?” The stallion asked of the Changeling Queen, earning a brief look of bemusement from Chrysalis.

“...Nothing for me.” Chrysalis replied.

“...Are you quite certain?” Banana Cream hesitantly asked, even more thrown than by Celestia's request for oatmeal.

“Unless you can distill down the raw essence of life into an edible form-” The changeling began.

“I shall get right on it!” Banana Cream excitedly proclaimed, before taking to the air and darting out the doors.

There was several moments of silence, before Luna tilted her head “...I find myself worried by this stallion's zeal.”

“I find myself worried by what he might be doing to my oatmeal.” Celestia remarked with a small smile, earning a laugh from her younger sister.

“I find myself worried by your ongoing habit of bursting into Celestia's chambers without announcing yourself.” Chrysalis bitterly noted.

Luna appeared unfazed by the remark “And I find myself worried by your constant canoodling of my sister. She has far too many duties to attend to for her to risk being exhausted by your salacious appetite.”

“My appetite is not salacious.” Chrysalis countered, even as Celestia gave another sigh.

Luna gave a sniff at this “Regardless, it is well within our sphere to ask that you refrain from canoodling our sister with such-”

“Why do you keep using that word?” The changeling suddenly demanded.

“What? Which word?”

“I think Chryssie is referring to your use of the term 'canoodling'?” Celestia supplied for her sister.

“Ah. 'Tis a most interesting phrase, is it not? We know not what noodles could have to do with such an act, though I am sure the story behind that is quite interesting.” Luna noted.

“But, why are you using that phrase?” Chrysalis pressed.

“That is the rule of the gift I have received for this year's festivities, that we must use it most frequently this day, in the hopes of mastering it. Your activities have been proven a boon in that regard.” Luna replied.

“What gift is that, sister?” Celestia asked, deeming this topic a nice change of pace.

“It was given to me by a member of my personal guard, a mare that has been most helpful in mastering modern day social traditions. It is a calender, meant to detail the many colloquialisms that have been adopted over the centuries, allowing us to master them individually on a day-by-day basis.” Luna excitedly explained.

“...A word-of-the-day calender?” Chrysalis asked, with an upturn of an eyebrow.

“Indeed! A fine gift, if there ever was one.” Luna agreed.

“...You've given me a headache.” Chrysalis said, before using a hoof to rub her brow.

Luna pursed her lips at the changeling's reaction “You are hardly in a position to criticize any gift that may be passed about. You claim to hold the affections of Celie close to your heart, yet I have not seen you make unto her a Hearth's Warming Day gift.”

Chrysalis glared at the Moon Princess, before Celestia politely cleared her throat “Sister, you may have...interrupted Chrysalis' attempt at...

Luna tilted her head at Celestia's words, before she blinked in sudden realization at what her older sister was referring to. To her credit, she seemed abashed by her earlier interference “I-...you have our apologies, sister.”

“It's quite alright, I did attempt to warn Chrysalis...both times.” Celestia assured.

“Even so, I had no idea that it was seen as acceptable in this day to provide sexual favors in lieu of material goods.” Luna noted.

“That...might be the wrong message to take away from this, sister.” Celestia pointed out.

“Still, perhaps Chrysalis is not wrong to suggest I use greater discretion before entering your private chambers.”

“Not at all, my doors are always open to you, Luna. Something which I'm sure Chrysalis understands and accepts.” Celestia assured her sister, even as she sent a glance towards the Changeling Queen, who merely grunted.

“Hm...then in that light, it can only be equitable that we too extend the policy of the open door to your changeling in turn.” Luna declared.

“Why?” Chrysalis quickly asked.

The Moon Princess nodded, having expected the question “As we said, it can only be equitable to extend to you the same privilege that our sister extends to us. Indeed, it seems fitting in light of the spirit of this holiday to do so. What say you to this, Chrysalis?”

Chrysalis seemed to consider this for a few moments, surprising Celestia with the amount of thought she was putting into it. She rather suspected that the changeling had been more aggravated with Luna's timing than the “open-door policy” itself.

The Princess of the Sun was broken from these thoughts by a loud knock, coming from the main doors of the dining hall. A moment later, they opened to reveal the familiar form of Stalwart Gaze. Much like yesterday, he was bereft of his armor and wore little more than a heavy scarf and his saddlebags.

“Lieutenant Stalwart? This is a surprise, though not an unwelcome one. I was given to understand you would be spending the day with your family?” Princess Celestia called out, as she rose from her seat.

“Yes, your Highness. That is still my intent, but my son was quite insistent that I see to a particular matter, before anything else.” Stalwart explained.

“Oh? By all means.” Princess Celestia prompted, even as Luna and Chrysalis looked on from their seats at the table.

“I won't take up too much your time. Hard Note thought it important that I drop this off before we continue with our own Hearth's Warming day.” The stallion elaborated, while retrieving a crudely wrapped package from one of his saddlebags.

“He thought to send a Hearth's Warming gift?” The Princess of the Sun asked.

Stalwart Gaze simply nodded, his mouth occupied with holding the package up by the twine holding it closed.

“Well, that was very thoughtful.” Princess Celestia noted in a pleasant tone.

Stalwart Gaze took a step back when he saw the princess reaching for the parcel. At the perplexed look she gave him, the stallion tilted his head towards the table.

More specifically, Chrysalis.

“Oh...I see.” Celestia remarked, a smile spreading across her face, even as a look of bafflement crossed Chrysalis'.

It took the changeling several moments to act, but eventually she stood from her seat at the table and approached them. At a nod from the stallion, Chrysalis took the package in her own magic, Celestia watching the whole time.

“...Send my thanks to your son.” Chrysalis told Stalwart in a neutral tone.

“He asked me to make sure you opened it before I left.” The stallion explained, even as he stayed rooted to his spot.

Chrysalis furrowed her brow at this, resisting the urge to glance towards Celestia, before she began to use her magic to carefully tear open the package.

Revealing the blanket the colt had shared with her the day before.

Chrysalis stared at the relatively mundane object, apparently unsure how to react. She visibly twitched when Stalwart Gaze cleared his throat to gather her attention.

“Hard Note thought you might need it more than him.” The stallion remarked.

“I-...” Chrysalis haltingly began, before falling silent for several more seconds. Shaking her head, the changeling used her magic to drape the blanket over her back, before turning her gaze towards the princess at her side “Well...at least somepony listens when I tell them that I'm cold. This colt is starting to prove himself far more considerate that I'm entirely used to. Quite charming really."

“Oh, perhaps I need to start worrying about young Hard Note stealing you away from me then?” Celestia noted lightly.

“Hm, perhaps you should.” Chrysalis deadpanned.

Celestia couldn't help but let out a light laugh, even as Luna shook her head at their curious form of affection.

“...Hard Note is still a minor, I should mention.” Stalwart blandly pointed out.

Celestia only redoubled her laughter.

Sometime after breakfast...

Sister!!!

Celestia couldn't help but start a bit, at the sound of Luna's bellowing call, setting down the letter from Twilight that she had been perusing. She had thought to relax for a bit, while both Luna and Chrysalis caught up on their sleep, but it seemed she was needed after all.

Taking one last sip of her tea, Celestia picked herself up before leaving the cozy comfort of her study, setting an easy pace.

'Cozy...yes, I suppose Chrysalis' pajamas will have to wait till tomorrow...'

She didn't want to keep her sister waiting too long, but Celestia doubted that that there was any danger about. Few things could pose a genuine threat to her little sister, so she let her thoughts wander as she made her way to Luna's chambers.

Soon she pushed open the doors to the dark chambers with a hoof, before calling out “Luna, is there something-...”

Celestia paused, as she caught sight of her sister in her bed, looking terribly irate with the changeling draping herself across Luna. Not unlike how Chrysalis usually draped herself across Celestia when sleeping.

“Sister, I demand that you evict this- this-...her from my bed this instant!” Luna loudly proclaimed.

“...Chryssie? May I ask, what's going on here?” Celestia called out in a calmer tone.

“...Open. Door...Policy.” Chrysalis slowly enunciated, while not looking up.

“This was not the intent of our offer!” Luna shouted, even as she tried to shove the changeling from her bed.

“Stop shouting so much...I didn't get as much sleep as I would have liked.” Chrysalis blandly replied, before shifting about to get more comfortable.

“Then take to our sister's bed, as you are so wont to do!”

“Her bed's too soft...” Chrysalis lazily said, as she used her magic to adjust the blanket she had been gifted earlier.

“And yet you derive some special comfort from our own bed?!” Luna demanded.

“Used to sleeping on Celestia. You're close enough...also enjoying your discomfort...”

“Sister! Your changeling is being most petty!” Luna angrily accused.

“Well, I suppose we can be sure that it's not an imposter then.” Celestia remarked, earning a snort of amusement from the drowsy changeling.

“'Tis no time for jesting sister! Have you nothing to say about this?”

“Not a thing. Sleep tight you two.” Celestia easily replied, as she tried to stifle her own amusement.

“But- Celestia! We demand that you return this instant to address-...!” Luna called, as Celestia promptly exited the room, leaving her alone with Chrysalis.

The Moon Princess couldn't help but fume, as she watched the doors to her chambers close, and soon found her angry gaze upon the changeling once more.

“...Very well. We have had enough of this farce, and if Celestia has no intention of-” Luna began, only to be cut-off by Chrysalis' letting out a light snore.

The princess blinked, before shaking away her surprise “Do not think that we shall fall for such a paltry act. We-...”

Luna trailed off as she noted the lack of any sort of response from the changeling. Furrowing her brow for a moment, she lightly prodded Chrysalis with her hoof.

The changeling really was asleep.

Luna couldn't help but glare down at Chrysalis, even as she considered this turn of events. After several more moments of thought on her part “I suppose, even if this is goes against our usual methods, my ensuring you a peaceful rest is not so out of the ordinary. One might even say that we are obligated to do so now...”

Again the changeling gave no response.

“Do not think that there will fail to be a reckoning over this, but...be glad that you have earned a modicum of our respect and sympathy in these past few months, else we would have no problem ejecting you from our chambers...And know well, that you shall be seeing to your own dreams this day.” The princess firmly stated.

Again, no response.

Luna pursed her lips, before she moved to make herself more comfortable, having decided to put up with the changeling for now...It was Hearth's Warming Day, after all. The changeling's sleep did not seem overly troubled, and Luna knew that this was too rare a thing to interrupt...

“Know that there shall be absolutely no canoodling whatsoever, whilst you share my bed.”
