Just Another Spell

Twilight sighed as she closed another book. This one hadn't been particularly interesting. Celestia had been sending her an unusual amount of books lately, causing her to spend days by herself reading. Spellbooks were piled up around her, each one begging to be opened.

She picked up a particularly dusty book, and her eyes widening just a little at how old this book was. It's brown cover was faded and tarnished, some pages were ripped out and stained, and the spine was falling apart. The older books always intrigued Twilight more because who knew what they could hold? Who knew what could be in a book that every pony else had forgotten? This particular book had a brown cover, and in silver calligraphy was the title: Spells of Another Dimension

The lavender unicorn flipped through the book, there were hundreds of spells, some of them not even in Equestrian. Twilight deemed most of them unfit to cast without the Princess around, so she thought it was going to be a book she would have to put aside.

Until she found an interesting-yet harmless-spell. The title alone piqued her curiosity because it had no description to say what it did, just instructions and the title Meet Another You.

Meet another you? What could that mean? Twilight's interest in magic got the better of her, and she decided to go ahead and cast the spell, deciding that Meeting Another You couldn't cause any harm.

Twilight's horn began to take on it's signature purple glow, and she began to cast the spell. As the magic flowed through her, a swirling vortex began to form on the floor in front of her. It pulsated, changing colors from purple, to an almost black color. The vortex convulsed one more time, and a mare was spat out.

Twilight stepped back in shock, unable to comprehend what she was seeing. In front of her stood another Twilight, but the similarities stopped there. This Twilight had a dark purple, almost grey coat, with a ragged, dirty mane. She looked darker, meaner, and ever so slightly confused.

The other Twilight straightened up and scowled "Where am I?"

Twilight snapped out of her shock "WHO ARE YOU!?!? HOW ARE YOU ME-HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE???"

The other Twilight sighed, beginning to look bored, "I asked a question."

"Well, Twilight-"

"I go by Twi"

"Ok, Twi, You're in Equestria, but based on the spell I cast, you're in a different dimension."

Twi nodded in understanding, "I'll say, I was waging war one moment, and now I'm here. What am I supposed to do to get back?"

Twilight's eyes got even wider "W-w-w-w-wait, what do you mean waging war?"

"The war to take over Equestria."

"Fighting against who?"

"Celestia and Luna of course. Do they not rule here too?"

"Well, they do, but-but why are you taking over?"

"Because I want to rule Equestria. Are you the stupid version of me, or have you never dealt with dimension travel before?"

"No, I can't say I have ever dealt with dimensions very much."

"Oh, that explains it."

Twi gave Twilight a smile. All scariness aside, Twilight could almost believe it was genuinely friendly. "I promise I won't try to pull anything, so do you want to go talk somewhere? I'm curious to know what goes on in this," she waved her hoof to indicate everything, "peculiar dimension of yours.

Twilight returned the smile. I can finally learn about what other worlds are like! "Sure, there's a place on Sugarcube Corner where we can talk."

As Twi followed Twilight out the door of her library, Twilight never noticed the real, evil grin on Twi's face. This is going to be easier than I thought.

The Art of the Unnoticed

"So these Elements of Harmony, they embody all of the good things in friendship, right?" Twi and Twilight were sitting in a cafe at Sugarcube Corner, discussing their own dimensions and what lied in each of them. Ponies passing by saw the doppelgängers and their eyes widened in shock before they turned their heads away, pretending not to notice the abnormal sight.

"Yes, we have used them a couple of times, like when we had to use them against Nightmare Moon, and when we had to turn Discord back into stone. Celestia has used them before also."

Twi sat back in her chair. She would have to remember these elements for future reference. "And Celestia and Luna, they are kind and fair rulers, you say?"

"Of course!" Twilight, began to describe Celestia's court, and how the laws were made in Equestria. When she was done, Twi launched into how things worked in her dimension.

Twi nodded and began to explain the dark workings of her government,"In Equestria, Celestia and Luna work together to run a strict dictatorship. Celestia tends to make the laws and deal with the people, while Luna works with the military to quell riots, and stop a resistance. Magic is in short supply, and most of it is under lock and key. Celestia is very good at what she does. Ponies everywhere live under oppression, and the resisters are brainwashed with spells to strong for normal ponies. I was finally able to get enough magic and enough people to stand up to Luna's armies, and now I'm almost there!"

Twilight digested the new information, and after a while, she asked, "What about your other friends? Do they help?"

Twi's expression became mournful, and she explained that information had leaked to Luna, and they had all been brainwashed into Celestia's personal group of supporters. She was hoping that when all was said and done, there would be a way to revive their minds, but that was out of the question with her in Twilight's dimension.

Twilight nodded solemly, " I can't believe how different our dimension's are, yet so similar! How does that work?"

Twi got that look that Twilight knew so well on herself. It was a look that you got when some pony wanted to know something you knew, and you wanted to explain to them. "Well, there are millions of different dimensions, and everything is slightly different in each one. Like there is probably another dimension where everything is the polar opposite, or where our personalities are the same, but something about us is different. It all depends. You just happened to pick me from my dimension, when you could have picked a me from any other dimension, and I would be completely different."

"Wow, I didn't know dimensions were so complicated, it's not really a subject we ponies study in Equestria. Maybe you could come back to the library and help me understand more of the spells in the book I used to bring you here? It would really be a great learning experience for me!"

Twi smiled that genuinely-not-evil smile of hers that made Twilight blush ever so slightly. "Sure let's go."

As the unlikely pair walked back home. Twilight studied her other self. It was good to have somepony who listened to her, who knew what she was talking about when she tried to explain a complicated theory, or a certain spell and what it did. Twi may look evil and dark, but she was like Twilight, but different too. They're pasts were opposite, so it was clear that they would be different, but Twilight liked this Twi. Maybe more than her other friends.

Oh don't be silly Twilight. She's your other self! She is you! A voice in Twilight's head was arguing with her, telling her that any attraction to Twi was impossible, not natural. But her being here isn't natural, and it's not like she's related to me! She's just another mare who happens to look and slightly act like me! How is it bad for me to like her?

Twilight gave Twi another glance and made up her mind. I'll spend the rest of the day with her, and then get her to help me send her back. She has things to do in her Equestria, and I can't hold her up. She's probably just coming back with me to be nice anyways.

When the two arrived at the library, Twi marveled at al of the spell books Twilight had in her possession. "The Princess just gives these to you whenever you ask? Back at home, theses are locked up in a vault."

After Twilight's inner turmoil, she thought she was doing a pretty good job at hiding her feelings. If you could call them that. At this point she wasn't sure what she was feeling. "Well, I'm kinda the Princess's personal student. She sends me the books so I can study them and then report back to her."

The two walked over to where Spells of Another Dimension lay open to the spell Twilight had cast. Twi rushed over to the book and started flipping pages with a thirst to know what lay in the faded pages of the book.

"Do you know what most of these spells do? Most of them aren't in Equestrian so I-"

Twi cut her off, "These are all spells that reach into other dimensions and do things for you. Basically, all of these spells reach into another dimension, and they either manipulate things int that dimension, or it can pull things from that dimension into your dimension. You cast the latter."

"Are there other books like this in your Equestria? Or does Celestia have them locked up?"

"Celestia does have most of them locked up, but I happen to have a few of them in my possession. Would you like me to cast one for you? Just to see how it's done?"

Twilight grinned, "Sure! pick any spell you want."

"Ok, this one is just going to summon an object from another dimension, like you did with me. I however, can control what I bring because this spell gives me the range to do that. What would you like me to get?"

"I don't know, is a glass of water ok?"

"Sure." Twi's horn glowed as she cast the spell. A vortex opened up like before, except it wasn't pulsating to black, it was a steady blue color. Soon enough, out spat a glass of water-right on top of the spell book.

"NO!" Twilight dashed over the spell book, trying in vain to sop up the spilled water, but the more she tried, the more smudged the ancient ink became. Finally, she gave up.

"In retrospect, this doesn't seem like such a good idea."

Twilight let a single tear slide down her face before she replied, "I know. How am I supposed to get you back now? I'm sure you had things to do, and you had a war to fight, and now you're stuck here and it's all my-"

And then Twi's lips were on hers.

At first, Twilight was shocked, then tentative as she had never kissed anyone before. But as adrenaline coursed through her veins, she kissed her back harder and harder until she finally pulled away.

And all the while a voice was screaming at her, why are you doing this! She's you for pete's sake! You can't be in love with yourself! It's weird! It's narcissistic! It's...It's...It's....

Twi grinned, "What did you think?"

"What was that? Why would you even do that? That-that-that wasn't even-"

"What, proper? Twilight, there is no proper or improper with us. No matter what other ponies say, we are different beings. We come from different worlds. We may look the same, we may even do the same things, but we are from different worlds. We are not clones, so there is no reason for you to feel bad about liking me." She kissed Twilight again, quickly. "I like you, and I like it here. So don't worry about anything ok?" She shook Twilight by the shoulders, "I need you to tell me you understand. Ok?"

And when Twilight said ok, she believed it.

The two spent the rest of the day looking through the spell book to see if there was anything they could salvage (along with lots of kissing on the side), but there weren't any legible spells. When the two crawled into Twilight's bed, Twi replayed the events of the day. She had accomplished all that she wanted and more. She had set up not only a fake background, but a fake world where she supposedly came from. She had Twilight not only depending on her for security she actually believed there was a romance going on here! How stupid could she be? How could any alternate version of Twi be this boneheaded? Oh well, it was for the best anyways. This dimension was ripe for taking over, and once she had the means to do it. This world would be all hers. And she was such a good liar, how was poor little Twilight supposed to tell fact from fiction anyway?

Plan Execution

View Online

Twi woke up bleary eyed sometime in the early morning. Her habits in her dimension required her to be an early riser, as she had planning, and "other" things.

When she saw where she was, all the events from yesterday came flooding back to her. The spell, the book, her plan, the romance she was pretending to be involved in. Everything that had transpired yesterday hit her like a brick.

At least she's asleep, she won't be able to get in the way. Twi looked over to where her doppelgänger was sleeping beside her, and tiptoed over to the library where the remains of the ruined spell book (along countless other books) lay on the floor. Nothing Twilight had done had worked to save it, but what about other spell books? What had Twilight Sparkle overlooked in her massive library?

It's a good thing Twilight was organized, or else it would have taken her forever. After an hour of sifting through shelf after shelf, she came across a book called, Other World Spells for Beginners. Once she had flipped through it, she discovered a spell that would let her open up a portal to her dimension, do what she needed to do, and then seal it back up again. There were modifications she would make to accomplish her task, but that was easy enough for a unicorn as strong as her.

Twi picked up the spell book, checked to see if Twilight was still asleep, and silently left the library. Once she was out of the house, she saw that most of Ponyville was still asleep, so she could accomplish her task without any pony noticing. She cast the spell and a portal, not all that different from the one Twilight had opened up, began to form. Only this time, Twi would be able to walk between the dimensions (a modification she had made to the spell), and put her plan in action.

As Twi stepped through the portal, she arrived in a tent. Hundreds like it were camped out just outside Canterlot's borders, Twi's troops preparing for the final battle. I can't believe Twilight actually thought I wasn't the tiniest bit evil. Doesn't my appearance clue any pony in?

She surveyed her surroundings, this particular tent was empty, but it wouldn't take long for her to spot the pavilion where she and her second in command had been staying. After wandering through the endless maze of tents (and having many a pony greet her and say how glad they were that she was back.), she came upon her pavilion. With a quick nod to the guard outside, she stepped in prepared to explain her entire plan to her second in command.

Her second in command was nothing like that piddly little servant Twilight paraded around getting her books. This particular dragon was at least 3 times his height, and clad in tarnished iron armor.

"Hello, Spike, I trust you have maintained order while I was gone."

Spike turned from the battle plans he was looking at, and his eyes widened in surprise. "Twi where have you been? I had to tell every pony that you had gone on a patrol and would be gone for a few days."

"You'll have to tell them I'll be gone for a bit today too. I have infiltrated another dimension that we can take over. It's much more naive than this one, and the resources are endlessly abundant. I have a plan, but you need to cooperate with me or else it won't work. I can't pull this off by myself.

Spike nodded in understanding, "I understand that you may need troops, but we just breached Canterlots northern entrance and-"

"I don't care!" Twi slammed her hoof on the ground. "If we can conquer this new dimension, the rewards could be even greater than if we conquered this one! Canterlot can wait! If we breached the walls this time, we can breach them again."

Spike sighed, "It didn't really fit in my battle plan, but I guess I can spare you a few-"

"No! We need the entire army to come! It's exactly like this Equestria but they are unaware! If they were anything like our Equestria, it would take more time, but we can catch them unaware and take Ponyville and Canterlot in one massive storm! It's perfect!"

Spike was beginning to see the logic. "But what about this dimension? With all of our forces gone, Celestia will overpower what forces remain. If this doesn't pay off, we will face imprisonment on either side!"

"That's a risk we will have to take. Now will you back me on this?"

"I guess, when do you want the troops to come over with you, now?"

"This time would be ideal, but there are a few loose ends I need to tie up. I will contact you later today, and everypony better be ready when the time comes. I will be opening up a portal between the two dimensions. You will come through with the troops and we can take over Ponyville. Once that's secure, we can march on to Canterlot. Am I clear?"

"Yes ma'am." Spike then resumed looking at battle plans, trying to see how exactly they would conquer Ponyville and Canterlot with their numbers. He supposed he would just have to trust Twi.

"Oh, and one more thing."

"Yes?"

"I'm going to need a pair of hoof cuffs. Where would those be located?"

"In the tent next door. If no pony's in there, just take what you need."

"Thank you."

Once Twi had procured her hoof cuffs. She reopened the portal and walked back into Twilight's dimension. Careful not to make a sound, she opened the library door.

And walked straight into Twilight.

Twilight gave Twi a look of confusion and slight suspicion. Twi couldn't have been up to anything, could she? After all that we did yesterday? What could she have been up to?

Twi flipped her mask back on. She needed this pony to trust her for the time being, or else the plan wouldn't work. "Twilight, um, I just went for a walk! I saw you weren't up yet, so I decided to just stroll around for a while." Not doing anything suspicious at all.

"What are the hoof cuffs for?"

"Oh, these?" Twi picked them up from their perch on her back. " I found these laying on the ground while I was walking. I don't know exactly where the police station is, but I'm planning on returning them later today."

Twilight thought about this for a moment. The alibi seemed plausible enough. Twilight liked to take long walks so was it possible Twi did too? And any pony could have found those hoof cuffs, I'm just overreacting.

But that persistent voice of doubt still didn't believe. What if she found a way to get back to her own dimension? What if she is evil? What could she be hiding from me?

Finally Twilight sighed. "Twi, you should have woken me up if you were going on a walk. I love taking walks!"

Twi breathed a mental sigh of relief "Oh, well maybe tomorrow then?"

"Sure! Would you like to go back to look at more spells? Maybe we could find something to help you get back home."

Twi nodded. She gave Twilight a quick kiss, and trotted over to the stacks of books. She sat down and pretended to look through a book she had supposedly never seen before. After a few minutes of this she lashed out at the unsuspecting Twilight and slapped the hoof cuff on her right foreleg.

The alarm bells that Twilight had been able to silence for the longest time began to go off. How could I be so stupid! Of course she was evil! How could I not see it!

Twi dragged the thrashing Twilight over to where her bed stood. In one smooth motion, she locked the other end of the hoof cuff onto the bedpost.

"How could you do this? I trusted you!" Twilight shrieked.

"You should learn to be careful who you trust." and Twi left the room, Twilight struggling all of the while.
