A stallion wanders about the prairie that lay between Canterlot and PonyVille. It is near midnight and his coat blends with his surroundings. The sky above is his home, he flies upwards and lay upon a soft flurry of a cloud. He rest his head, without falling asleep. The wind blows softly in his mane and tail, of which a light blue. His eyes a mysterious navy blue color, matching the princess of the night, he does not know this information though. His fur nearly dark as night shows easily upon this white cloud floating through the sky.
The Princess of the night flies to the prairie, and spots this unknown stallion. Making a pit stop to where he lay, she tries to be as quiet as possible, trying to not wake what she thinks is a sleeping pegasus. His ear twitches hearing the flap of her wings, his head darts up and he stands, looking what used to be behind him, to see the princess of the night herself, he bows down, knowing that is what you do when seeing royalty.
"Hello, uh, Princess of the night." His head still upon the cloud, still knelt down to the princess, she lay a hoof on his right shoulder, insisting he get up.
"Hello fair stallion. And what is it you do out here late at this time?" Luna asks him, she has a look of question.
Easily answering, he looks at the princess in the eyes, "Well, I was simply admiring your beautiful night that you lay upon all of Equestria."
Luna becomes something of a bit flustered, but she knew she must not fall in love with a regular stallion, for she would out age him, and does not want a broken heart. Smiling softly, she looks at the stallion, "Thank you. How about we chat on the ground, my wings are getting quite tired, since it is not easy to use magic to raise and lower the moon whilst flying."
The stallion and Luna float down to the grassy prairie. Their hooves make a soft sound as they touch the grassy ground, and they stand, looking at both one another.
"So, young stallion, may I ask of your name?" Luna asks politely, not to sound demanding, she did not want to frighten what may be her new friend.
"Lunar Shadow." He smiles and looks at Luna, then himself a multitude of times, realizing they look nearly exactly alike.
"What is the matter Mister Shadow?" Politely asking Luna did, wondering why the stallion kept looking at herself, then himself. She looks at his fur, and see's by lifting her hoof, they look very similar, "Well I'll be.." realizing what he had found out mentally.
"Did you also notice that we look near exactly alike???" Lunar Shadow ask Luna, she nods whilst looking at him in awe.
She had never seen another pony that resembled her in such ways. Although the only major difference was their manes, but that did not seem to cross her mind.
Luna had then decided it must be destiny for them to had met, and become friends. She then gets a glance at the stallion's cutie mark. Her eyes widen as she see's what she does. Their cutie mark, exactly the same. There is no way in Equestria this could be real! Could the princess of the night, and dream-walker be dreaming herself? No, she does not sleep at night with everypony else, she keeps it going, or is it day time and she is dreaming?
Lunar Shadow seems to notice the same thing, he pinches his wing with his mouth, and flinches, "Definitely not a dream.. This is unreal..!" Luna nods, without hesitation. She tries to configure what is going on in her mind of complex memories and metaphorical tunnels.
They both sit down, by one another and try to get this through their heads, they are near exactly alike, cutie mark and all, and they have met.
"So, Lunar Shadow, how is it you acquired your cutie mark?" Luna wondered, maybe it is related to the night, maybe not. She wanted to know.
"When I was a filly my mom and dad never let me stay up at night, until one day I went to a sleep-over with the other fillies from school. That night I stayed up the entire time, I gazed at your amazing stars, and that, directly at midnight, is how I gained my cutie mark." Lunar Shadow explained to Luna as they both gaze up at the stars, "May I ask how you got yours?"
Luna thought for just a moment, then nodded, "Of course. I was just a filly, such as the age when normal ponies get their cutie mark, so I wanted to arise the moon and let it lay low for when the sun is to rise, so I may help my elder sister with her duties. And I was told by my parents it was to be my duty when I have grown up. Anyways, one evening I asked my elder sister, Celestia if I may help with rising the moon. After several tries and failures I raised it. With the help of my sister to raise the stars, of which is now my duty. When I rose the moon that night, that is when my cutie mark appeared." She let out a sigh from the tale of her past. Feeling relieved she continued to move the moon and stars through their normal routine.
Lunar Shadow nods, he was amazed to know the princess's story and it's greatness. He looked in the stars, in awe he could hardly believe a single pony of such power could do this. Whilst the dream-walking from time to time. He was amazed.
Luna looked over to him, seeing as he stares up at the night sky, seeing that there may be few ponies like him, or he could be the only one, that enjoys her night such as he does, it gave her a slight of happiness.
Hours of just sitting by one another pass, and the moon sets, the sun starts to arise, and the stallion, Lunar Shadow, plans to go to sleep, "Well princess. I go to sleep during the day," he yawns, then continues, "Good day." He flies up to his cloud from before. and rests.
"One moment young stallion!" Luna yells to him, and flies up to his cloud.
"Yes, princess?" Sounding tired the stallion answered.
"Shall we meet here tomorrow evening?" Luna asked eagerly, she has little close friends, besides the elements of harmony, so this friend would be great to her, being up when she is and all.
Before going to sleep, he slightly waived his left hoof, "Sure thing princess." he gave out one last yawn and went to sleep for the day. And Luna fluttered off to her part of the castle. When she got there she went to her big fluffy bed with designs of the night upon she, she lay in it and went to sleep for the day, she couldn't wait to meet the stallion the next evening.
The two continue to meet up, day after day, week after week. Becoming the best of friends. And maybe a little more. They talk almost every night, and the night's they don't they think about both one another, not realizing that they both obviously like one another. They just don't see it, since they look up at the night sky as they speak, sometimes their eyes of light blue meet, and they just gaze at each other.
One night, Lunar Shadow decides it's time for him to tell the princess of the night how he truly feels about her.
"Princess, I have to say something important to you, that I've been meaning to say for a while now." He swallowed hard, being nervous to tell her. As any stallion would be, because he fear this may break their friendship if she does not feel the same way as he does to her.
"Go ahead Shadow." Luna replied simply, and swiftly, whilst looking into Lunar's eyes, giving him her full attention.
He sighed, and opened his mouth, for a moment nothing came out, no words, no sound. "I.. I've been meaning to tell you that-" he pauses. Not knowing exactly what to say next, he never really practiced for this. "That I... I like you. I really do!" He exclaimed.
Luna had little reaction, she got the wrong idea, "Well of course, that is why we are good friends. Are we not?" She smiles.
"No, I mean.. Well I mean that I like you more than just a friend Luna." He told her, and for the first time using her formal name, rather than just calling her princess.
Luna folded her ears down and her face flushed red, "I do not know what to say Shadow.." She was nearing tears as she thought, the first stallion in over a thousand years to exclaim his love to her, she was not prepared for such a thing. And never really wanted to be, for she knew she would out live any normal pony.
"Well.." He thought for a moment, "How about a hug?" He opened his front legs as he sat, welcoming a hug, if Luna wanted. And she did, she hugged the stallion, and he hugged back.
Luna had to tell him, without breaking his heart, that she would outlive him. And she was sure that he knew. Maybe she could find another way, to keep them together, as long as she may live.
"Shadow, you do know, I will easily out live you. And that,I do not want to happen." She said sadly, looking down over his shoulder.
"I know, Luna, but maybe you could find a way, for us to be together. For as long as you live!" He hugged Luna tightly, happier than ever, and he wrapped his wings around her. Never had he felt this way before to any other mare.
Stopping the hug, the wings still around her, and their muzzles away from one another by just a hoof and a half, "Maybe I could look in the archives of the castle I reside in. I could possibly find a spell to make that happen." Luna looked at the sky, the moon start to set, she was planning on staying up the whole day so she may search he archives, instead of waiting until the next night.
They say their goodbye's these one's different, they ended with a special hug, and Lunar Shadow goes to sleep, Luna flies to the castle and pretends to sleep as her sister Celestia check up on her. Suspecting something is going on with Luna. And waiting about an hour, just to be sure, she sneaks over to the archives. She let not fear the guards see her, but anytime she saw Celestia, she would hide by flying above, and trying not to make a sound, and just in case Celestia did hear her, she cast a invisibility spell upon herself. Although it was only a few times she had to do so, she got to the archives within fifteen minutes. Of which was not exactly close to her room of which where she sleeps, or so Celestia thinks she is resting at the moment. She scurries through the books and scrolls. And after hours of searching, the sun just past it's highest point,she finds a very old scroll. Luna levitates the scroll carefully in her magic of blue, and unravels the scroll. She reads through the scroll, and memorizes the spell over the course of a few hours. And the sun starts to set, she quickly teleports to her room, and wonders why she didn't just teleport before. She had the scroll put back where she found it, and Celestia came into her room just moments after she teleported, that gave her barely enough time to scramble around, but her sister saw as she threw her blanket onto herself.
"Sister? What are you doing?" Celestia asks Luna with her motherly-toned voice.
"I was..." She panics and makes something upon the spot, "Fixing my bed!" Luna gave an awkward smile, hoping her sister would believe her.
"Alright, well it is almost time for you to raise the moon." Celestia said, reminding her sister.
"I will make sure to so when it is time. Thank you for reminding me sister." Luna said to her sister reassuringly.
Celestia lowers the sun for the day, and Luna starts to arise the moon and makes the stars appear in the darkening sky. Luna heads to the prairie laying in between Canterlot and PonyVille. She see's the stallion sitting on the ground, looking around. And he spots her, then waving hello.
"Hello Shadow." Luna greeted.
"Hello Luna. Nice to see you tonight, as I do every." He says so charmingly, one of the qualities that stole Luna's heart, he then smiles.
"I bring good news to you Shadow." Luna said, breaking the silence, and she looks at him,and him at her.
"Yes, what is it Luna?" Lunar Shadow asks.
"I have found a spell," she yawns, tired from being up throughout the day, and rests her head on his shoulder, "of which will grant you eternal life.."
"Rest now Luna, you seem tired. Although I am happy to hear about the spell." He assured Luna.
Luna lies down on the grass besides Lunar Shadow and rest. Sleeping at his side, he lay a wing atop her body, fur being very soft, he loved how it felt. He watch the night sky, it has frozen, worried that other ponies may notice once they wake up when it is supposed to be morning, and hopes Luna wakes up before morning arrives.
Hours pass, and Luna still rests, Lunar Shadow starts to get tired. He knows that it is nearing what is supposed to be morning. He lay his head on Luna's back, his wings now covering the both of them, instead of covering just Luna.
Meanwhile, in the castle....
Celestia wakes up, but all she can see is dark. She starts to panic, "Why has Luna not set the moon yet?" Celestia thought out loud, "I must go and find her, maybe she is in her room."
Celestia gets out of her bed, and trots quickly to Luna's room. She see's a guard, "Guard!" She calls.
"Yes princess?" The guard retorts to Celestia quickly.
"Have you seen my sister Luna any time recently?" Celestia quickly asks.
"Yes, I saw her fly out of the castle and head towards where PonyVille is located princess." The guard answers Celestia.
"Thank you very much guard." She waves goodbye and heads to her royal carriage.
"Is there somewhere we can take you today princess?" Two winged guards ask Celestia.
"To PonyVille, please. And quickly!" Celestia commands the guards.
"Yes princess!" The guards salute Celestia, get themselves harnessed, let Celestia into the carriage, and they start to fly.
"I will light your path, so you may see easier." Celestia says, as she casts a light spell in front of the guards so they may see what is in front of them.
"Thank you princess" They both say in unison.
"No problem, I must always assure your safety." She nods, and rests her royal flank upon the carriage seat as she waits to get to PonyVille.
Half an hour of flying passes, and Celestia reaches PonyVille, she tells her guards to rest from the flight, and quickly goes to the closest resident of PonyVille, which being was Derpy Hooves.
"Miss Hooves, have you seen my sister Luna here recently?" Celestia asks Derpy.
"No princess. I haven't seen any hoopla's." Derpy responds.
"No no, have you seen my sister. Luna?" Celestia was serious.
"Ohh... No, I haven't seen princess Luna here recently, nope." Derpy says to Celestia, and then flies off.
"Oh dear... Where could she be?" Celestia thinks out loud to herself, and flies about, looking for her. She spots Luna in a prairie, or was it a stallion? She still fly to them, quickly, she had questions to ask.
"Luna?!" Celestia yelled to the two ponies that looked near exact alike.
Lunar Shadow looks up to the he sun princess very angrily trotting to him, he was hardly awake, so he thought he was dreaming. And after wiping his eyes, and blinking a few times, he then realizes that it's actually princess Celestia, he quickly wakes up the sleeping Luna.
Luna, just awoken, see's her sister and her eyes widen. "Sister?!"
"Who is this pony?! And why did you not set the moon for me to raise the sun?!" Celestia furiously yelled to her sister, tears started to swell up in her eyes.
"I, I can explain sister!" Luna exclaimed to her surprisingly emotional sister known as Celestia.
"Then please do so explain to me what is going on here!" Celestia stand above both lunar ponies, Luna and Lunar Shadow both stood, only about 3/4's the size of Celestia, and look up at her.
"This," Luna looks over to Lunar Shadow, "Is my companion. His name is Lunar Shadow."
Celestia takes a good long look at him, she see's near everything is exactly alike about them, besides their gender, mane, and tails, "That explains him, but why did you not lower he moon dear sister?" She looked devastated, seeming to have calmed down.
"I.. Wanted to make him live for eternity, like we can, so we shall forever be together." Luna blushed slightly, along with Lunar Shadow, but Celestia was not happy to hear this.
Calmly, she answers, "I will not allow you to do that dear sister. What if something goes wrong? What if he ends up breaking your heart? No offense to you Mister Shadow, I am just worried for my only sibling."
He nods, "None taken.."
"Well, I love him!" Luna brings him to her side with her left wing, showing her affection to him in front of her sister, "And I feel he would never break my heart. I mean really, he looks near exactly alike as I."
"No. Luna, I'm sorry, but I forbid you to see him any longer." Celestia stomped her hoof down, and levitated the two away from one another. "You must lower the moon, and let me raise the sun, and you cannot meet with him any longer, so as long as I live." Celestia did not want to do this to her only sister, going through a tough stage, coming back recently to Equestria after banishment to the moon. Luna took it hard.
"No sister!" Luna cried out, "This is not fair! All I want is one special pony, you have Twilight after all! And she will live for eternity, such as us, and Cadence. I will not allow you to keep me away form the one pony who truly understands me!" Luna stepped away from her sister, "I promise! I will not let the moon and stars be this way again! Just please let me be with Lunar Shadow!" Luna broke, and cried, tears flowed down her dark blue cheeks, that had a slight red to them.
"I am doing this for your well being! Now come sister, and lower the moon and stars. Please. We must go back to the castle, it is time for you to rest, such as you do during the day. And Lunar, I know this may be hard, but you must understand. I cannot let you see my sister, for it's for her well being. I am sorry I must do this to the both of you." Celestia explained to them, she let out a sigh, and led Luna to the royal carriage, Luna lowered the moon and stars, and went to sleep in the carriage, for she was very tired from staying up longer than she normally does.
"I'm sorry Luna.." Lunar Shadow whispered. He had failed yet another pony, he lay on his cloud and it turned from white and fluffy to grey and static with electricity that run through the cloud. It seems they change due to pegasi's feelings from time to time.
Luna and Celestia reach the castle only about an hour later, the sun now risen to it's position, and moving, Celestia sat thinking. She brought Luna to her room by levitation, she did not want to wake her sister. Not knowing what she may be dreaming. Not knowing her sister is a dream-walker.
Luna and Lunar Shadow meet up in Lunar's dream, where him and Luna talked, of course the Luna in his dream was almost exactly like Luna, with few subtle differences, she talked to Lunar Shadow, head on. They made a plan to meet up secretly when Celestia was surely sleeping, and made sure to teleport out of the castle first instead of going past the guards, of which would tell Celestia that Luna had left, without hesitation. But Luna said to give it about a week or so, when her sister would have more trust in her sorrow-filled sister, missing the stallion she loves.
Lunar Shadow awakens before their conversation ends, it's the next night, and mentally, he talks to Luna, although really he isn't, it's just to keep himself busy over the course of the next seven to ten days of loneliness to come. He stares at the stars and moon.
Waiting days and days, Luna starts to come back, not every night, so the guards would not suspect the princess, but enough to satisfy the both of them. They met up once every few days, weeks, or maybe months. Whatever Luna could do to see her special stallion, she would.
One night was different than the others, "Shadow, I want to cast the eternal life spell upon you, so we may live together, and be with one another for eternity, but I will only do so if you really want to. And I've been wanting to know, if you wish to?" Luna asked Lunar Shadow.
He quickly answered, "Of course I want to. That is what I have wanted from the beginning, is to be with you." being as charming as ever.
Luna nodded her head, "This may take some time. For it is not easy to cast the spell. So please, get into a comfortable position, and relax." Luna took a subtle breath, and lit her horn with magic. She started to cast the spell, Lunar had lay down onto the grass the position he finds most comfortable, and Luna enchanted the words to the spell softly out loud to herself, and focused upon Lunar Shadow.
Near five minutes, maybe ten pass, and the spell is complete, Lunar takes a deep breath, he fills much younger, now that his life span has extended. "I feel... Refreshed, so to speak." He looked at Luna, and she replied to him.
"Great, now we can live together with one another, but I need you to come to prove yourself to my sister, for, as you know, last time you met. We were in a different situation, but now, she trusts me, and maybe she will trust you as well. Seeing as I am still mentally stable, and we are still with each other." Luna explained, and Lunar shadow nods.
They fly off to the great city of Canterlot, and never have visiting in pony himself, he looked at it in awe. He hasn't even been to the castle yet, but it was a site to see for a pony who lived in PonyVille when he was young, then out to a prairie he went. So it was an amazement. Moments later Luna and Lunar Shadow reach the castle, he looks up at it's glamour and structure of the building in front of himself. His jaw had dropped from the site of seeing the castle.
"Now Lunar, I want you to follow me, since it is near time for me to go to bed, we have merely few hours, and so, I want you to not get lost in this castle. It is like a maze, and not easy to find your way out once your lost deep within." Luna subtly said to Shadow. He nods, and follows Luna for ten to twenty minutes. And finally, they reach Celestia's room door, it is very large, with her cutie mark symbolized onto the door. Lunar Shadow looks up at it, and Luna lookd at Lunar, "I will go in and awaken my sister. I will get her out of the room to meet you, this time. Properly."
"Alright." Lunar Shadow replies to Luna. Becoming somewhat nervous he takes a few deep breaths to calm himself. Of which does the job, since he tells himself mentally, this is for Luna. This is for Luna, for Luna. He repeats in his head, that motivation made his worries nearly disappear, and he tried to no longer think about it.
Luna comes out with a very tired Celestia after two minutes of them whispering, Celestia opens the door and yawns. She has her mane not combed, never thought the day Lunar would see Celestia uncombed and only just awoken, she looked down at Lunar Shadow.
"What business do you have here..." Celestia had forgotten his name.
"Lunar Shadow." he replied, sternly, and reassuringly.
"Alright. Mister Shadow, what business do you have here?" Celestia was not happy, she looks down at the Lunar pegasus without grace as she would her other little ponies.
"Sister, you two got off a bad start because of me, how about you give him a chance, and you shall see he isn't a bad pony." Luna said to her sister as she walks past her and stands by Lunar Shadow, feeling confident.
"Alright sister, I will give Mister Shadow here a second chance." Celestia said kindly.
"Thank you very much princess." Lunar Shadow said to Celestia, bowing his head momentarily.
"I am much obliged." Celestia says, then continues, "So, you want to prove yourself worthy of being with my sister, I presume?"
"Yes princess."
"Alright. But how will I know that you will not hurt her in the future?"
"Well. Sister," Luna interrupts their conversation and they both look at her, she folds her ears down slightly and continues, "Whilst you have banished me from seeing Shadow, I visited him secretly, still having love for him in my heart, and it has been almost a year. And look, as you can see, my heart is not broken. In fact, I love him, more than ever." Luna blushed slightly as she said that, and her ears perked up.
"Hmm.." Celestia put a hoof under her chin, thinking strongly about this for a moment. "Luna, are you sure? He is just a regular pegasus, he would never live near as long as we do."
"Um, well. Actually, Luna performed a life extension spell on me a few nights ago.. So, that problem has already been resolved." He chuckled nervously.
"You did? Oh Luna, not only did you go against my word to see this stallion, but you performed a life extension spell on him?"
Luna simply nodded, not knowing what to say.
"Well.." Celestia thought for a moment, "Since you trust him so, and that spell is very hard to reverse, I shall let him stay with you as your special some pony." Celestia goes to Luna's ear and whispers into it.
Luna nods, and shakes Celestia's hoof. Lunar, not knowing really just what went on, but he shrugs and hugs Luna.
"This is great." He lets go of the Lunar princess, "Thank you so much princess."
"Please, since you are now Luna's special some pony, call me Tia."
"Really sister?" Luna asked.
"Yes sister, I am looking out for you, and want to make sure Lunar Shadow is as comfortable here in the palace as you are."
"Thank you sister!" Luna and Shadow both hug Celestia with grace.
"No problem my little ponies. Now go, sunrise is soon to come, I can imagine you are both tired."
They both look at one another and yawn, "Yeah.." they say in unison.
"But, if you do not mind, could you two sleep in separate beds?" Celestia sheepishly smiles.
"Yes, uh, Tia." Lunar hesitates.
They both go to Luna's room, inside it being a large room, two beds remain, one is Celestia's old bed she used as a filly and up unitl Luna was comfortable sleeping by herself, Luna goes to her bed.
"Good rest Lunar Shadow." She says, and lays down on her bed, covering herself in her Lunar beddings.
"Good night Luna." He yawns, and climbs into Celestia's old bed, dust puffs up in the air, and he coughs a bit. But climbs into the bed anyway, and covers himself in sunshine beddings.
The day ends and Luna awakens, she starts to arise the moon.
She sits by Lunar Shadow as he dreams, and wonders what the other Luna pony is currently dreaming of, but she must focus on making sure that the moon stays on it's normal cycle.
The days each continue on like this, he wakes up somewhat late into the night, and they both stay with another for eternity.
